    CBJ fans : 0 salary retention on Laine and Harris is very serviceable, young and cheap.
    MTL fans : we get a top3-6 sniper and a 2nd round pick for a young defenseman ... when we needed to get rid of one anyway to clear the logjam.
    This marks the beginning of the end of the rebuild, will the Canadiens make the playoff this season ? Probably not, but if everyone is healthy and with a few other moves ... it’s not an impossibility now.

    As a CBJ fan I’m happy with this trade. I like the work being done to get the team to “pull in the same direction”. The cap space gives us a lot of flexibility (13 mil now?) and allows us to deal with Elvis if necessary. Losing the 2nd is acceptable considering our prospect pool. I assume CBJ is hoping to replace Laine’s shot with Chinakov’s.

    Adding Patrick Laine to the Canadiens makes strategic sense, especially with Carey Price's contract on LTIR. Price's $10.5 million cap hit allows the Canadiens to exceed the salary cap, giving them the flexibility to add a player like Laine with his $8.7 million cap hit.
    Laine’s presence not only fills the cap space effectively but also significantly boosts the team’s performance. As a top goal-scorer, Laine can draw defensive attention, creating more opportunities for the young core, like Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, to shine. This increased performance leads to greater confidence, which is crucial for their development.
    In essence, utilizing Price's LTIR cap relief to bring in Laine not only strengthens the Canadiens' roster but also helps accelerate the growth and confidence of their young stars, ensuring the team remains competitive and continues to build for the future.

      @@FHL-Devils Harris is on his way to become a 40-50 point defenseman if CBJ plays their cards right, he wasn't paired with Matheson or Barron here, most of the time he was on the third pair with Wideman in 21-22 and sometimes with Savard or Guhle or when Guhle was injured, Gustav Lindstrom, very defensive defensemen when it came time to play with Lindstrom, Wideman was a warrior who showed up every game with a huge heart but he couldn't be the offensive D he wanted to be due to just plain lack of talent, even though he has flashes before we acquired him, I think it was in CBJ or if not Ottawa. You can count on Harris to be solid defensively, more so than some of the dmen we have right now who are very young. Harris is a quick on his skates guy too, not the best at stickhandling, but he is very fast at returning to his own zone skating backwards and stopping plays and he's one of the more proven young dmen we had, its just that he was expandable as even better, star power guys were behind him experience wise and they were gonna get the ice time, Hutson, Guhle will duo #2 and one of these 3 guys will have to fight not to be the 7th dman between Barron, Mailloux and Xhekaj. I kind of expect Mailloux to surprise some and it will be a tough choice between Barron who was just signed, just like Xhekaj to NHL contracts, no AHL for neither, so it could be that they will split the role on the third pair for a while until the guy doing best taking the spot for the majority of the games left in the season as they consolidate their place as the 6th dman, which in that crew is not a position to scoff at, we're PACKED. We can comfortably keep Reinbacher in Laval for him to get used to North American rink size and a few of the other lesser known prospects on defense will have their turn when Savard or Matheson leaves, although I have a feeling it won't be this season and next season, the one guy between those 2 who becomes an RFA at the end of that season, depending on how Habs do in 24-25, will be traded for a forward or a pick and one will remain. Love Savard and his willingness to block shots and be a second goalie without getting hurt too much, but if he starts getting ouchies from age and all the pucks he blocks, Matheson the guy from Pointe-Claire (a town on the island of Montreal, not Montreal proper but real close to, probably loves playing where he's from and could be the guy we hold on to, both possibilities are in the air and it's way too early to say more.

    Finally. Finally I know why Hughes wasn't signing any wingers who were free agents that are left who can score at least 20 goals with Dach or Newhook as their centre, both great playmakers, Dach might be on a superior level to Newhook when it comes to playmaking, all Habs fans have seen his magic in the 22-23 season when he play on the first line or even when he was on the second line as a Centre, his most natural position, but like a lot of young slow to develop (damn that injury last year and damn you Jarred Tinordi, I liked your dad better, you were just playing in the NHL because Chicago was that bad and they ended up sending you down to the AHL anyways for most of the season, I think the Habs of old drafted him on first round? (too much on a rush to verify right now, but he was picked high, a 1st draft pick from another era for sure if he was). Even in the pre-season we saw Dach continue where he left off after coming back from his injury in 22-23 and I feel like he's going to fully unlock this season, he was supposed and going to last season, but s*** happens.
    Well, now we have 2 potential 40 goal scorers and I don't know how many goals a year Dach will do at his best, I saw some people who are in the know say they can expect 35 goals from Dach easily once fully developed, and that time has arrived, but I think if at his peak he gets in between 35-40 goals, he will have a lot of assists, around 60-65 assists a season, so he might be a 100 pointer, something I expect Suzuki to be this year. It's crazy how rewarding this feels...as I was wanting the Habs to pick one of 3 players who could still score 20 goals in free agency like bringing back Pacioretty, signing Tyler Johnson who scored 17 in 67 games last season in a terrible team and Van Riemsdyk who likely had his weakest season goals-wise but still had around 40 pts, which is better than guys we lost that were supposed to be a 20 goal scorer like Tanner Pearson. Maybe Gally could if he continues on this trend of playing more than 35 games a season, but I think him and Anderson were pretty much dead wood by now, same for Dvorak who unfortunately seem like injuries have ruined the ex 120+ points OHL'er, he always stayed the same guy he was once he joined the NHL with the yotes, 40 pts, solid defensively....but I prefer to get rid of him too, Evans can take the 4th line centre spot easily, he's a master faceoff winner and is excellent on the PK and has a lot of drive, while Dvorak's game is as uninspired as his smile is common (only time I saw the guy smile was when he had his hat trick back in 22-23), and he was still chewing on his mouth guard as he did.
    My worries about the idleness during this summer are over, it looked as if players started to become scared of coming to play for Montreal again, somthing Hughes and St-Louis and Vinny Lecavalier upstairs at hockey operations seem to want to change, I think they slowly are removing the fear of coming to Montreal, a syndrome that has attacked most star players (not all, Kovalev and Koivu for example could ignore the media here, but Kovalev was around during a pretty good period for the team, when the team finished first in the East back in 2007-08. The event that started it all IMO was the treatment Stephane Richer received when he came back after his time with Jersey, where he won too, the guy was a winner yet...but I'll always remember Mark Recchi's last practice with the Habs, where he was sitting down on the ice, relaxing, just as the kodak flashes started to take pics in droves, as he was having his worst season ever, of course, they traded everyone of talent around him for peanuts, Damphousse, gone, Pierre Turgeon gone, Kirk Muller, gone. First line was something like Rucinsky - injured Koivu - Recchi and the defense beyond Malakhov and Brisebois was miserable. Those were the darkest Habs days and they were a "better" team than last season, they made playoffs but were always swept out first round, I'm surprised Recchi stayed as long as he did, but as he started talking back to the photo journalists, who were taking those pics for would-be scathing articles about how he's sitting around during practice while the team sucked and he was having a bad season compared to the usual. No such articles were written as when he started making fun of the journalists and yelling F-bombs at them among other better insults, he was traded the next day, likely for not much too, I don't remember what Habs got in return but he was a BEAST when he returned to Philly.

    Not sure I like the idea of a so-called "problem" going to Montreal. The rebuild is working because everyone has bought in. Could Maty make a difference in Laine's attitude and performance? If yes, he solidifies his reputation as a terrific coach that builds a TEAM. The good news is that the contract is only for 2 years, which means they could reform Laine and ship him off at the deadline this year, or next. I watched the Kent Hughes news conference and it was good to hear the process that Montreal went through to put Laine to the test. It's now up to him.

      same concern here. Though, I think of Laine of less of a problem than PLD. At least Laine took steps to get himself better through the PA program. I think that as long as he loses the ego and accepts being part of the team, he'll do fine (though knowing our luck, he'll probably play very well, but get injured about 10-20 games).

    @doubledouble4g379 2 місяці тому

    Hope the fresh start is good for Laine, but then I said that about Drouin when he started playing in the high-stress Montreal market. But yeah, only 26, could still rebound into a great top 3 or 6 forward, and if not it's only until 2026, which is around the time the Habs are supposed to be truly competitive again. They had the cap space and could spare the assets they gave-up, so this is low-risk, high potential for the Habs.

    I really like this trade by the Habs. Laine can definitely bounce back in Montreal. He isn't used to a big market like Montreal, and for some it may be a problem, but for him I think it'll be alright. The expectations have been lowered in his case, there's a solid core in Montreal already and honestly I don't think the fans find Harris' moving out to be much of a bother because there are so many good prospects just waiting to take his spot, so they'll cut Laine some slack. IMO Harris kinda peaked already, or wasn't evolving anymore with Montreal, so it'll probably be good for him too, and maybe he will get better. I think Laine will find it motivating to play with a driven team, and it is going to be a driven team starting this season. Also, reminder: he is only 26!

  • @G0lden-lu6by
    @G0lden-lu6by 2 місяці тому +3

    Columbus is still not out of the woods entirely cap wise, since they still got Johnny Hockey on the books for an eternity. Hope Monahan rekindles some of his magic.
    Montreal gets out of a defensive logjam, acquires more draftcapita and only has to suffer that 8.7 caphit for 2 seasons if Laine doesn't pan out at all.
    Dude is a moody glass cannon but when he's healthy and on his game, he's still a legitimate top 6 forward and could pot anywhere between 20-50 goals and 1.0+ ppg on a full season. That won't happen though but even 20+ goals and around 0.7 ppg with most of the season played would be good for the Habs. They need skill and someone who can shoot the puck, not too many PP guys either who shoot right so in theory all they need.

    The best thing about this trade is the timing, Laine's contract expires at a good timing for our rebuild. Let's imagine Laine goes back to a 40g scorer, it's just gravy for Habs fans and Kent Hugues gets to pull another master class trading 40g Laine at the deadline on his last year of contract to a desperate team for a huge haul.

    I think Habs might have made a mistake here. Laine hasn't been able to score like he did in his first 3 seasons. On top of that most of his goals are ones that carry little value because he scores when the outcome of the game is already decided. Something like a 4-1 goal late in the third for example. I don't know... 8,7M is a lot of money on the cap hit. I hope that he will bounce back and prove me wrong

    If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, Laine would be Halloween.
    When he shows up, he's excellent, top 3 on any team he could play for. But that's what, 40% of the time? Maybe 35%?
    This is the third team where I'll say "I hope it goes well and he finds his place" but after how the last two went down? I'm not surprised it took a draft pick not to retain.
    He's not just a risky bet, knowing how finicky he gets with minutes and exposure, he can genuinely be a liability.
    Keep him away from leadership roles, even if he does well.
    Second line unless he's having a career year (or the first line turns to dogshit).
    And (not kidding) keep him away from media.
    Columbus doesn't get a lot back, save cap space, but given his last year with the Blue Jackets.. I'd rather have cap space than dead weight.

    Harris is a good defenceman and will do well in Columbus. He needs more ice time than what he got in Montreal to really show how good a player he can be.
    I think Shannon wore the wrong sweater - Harris was a better player last year than Laine. Not saying that Laine potentially is not better than Harris just that he wasn't for a couple of years. The potential is that Laine plays for a few games for the Habs. This is a more risky move for Montreal than fans seem to think.
