- #ICYMI, here's an 'Ask Me Anything' with COL Iain Hoo, a Commando Officer! He's currently the Commander of the Commando Training Institute, and in his 22nd year of service in the Army! #FHAG
Tough guy who express his views in a gentle, kind and humble way. Mad respect!
Despite of his high army rank, prestige vocation and having gone through top posts in the Commando Unit, Col Hoo appears to me a humble, kind, down to earth and nice guy. This inherent virtue is easily shown from his corresponding with people.
then when during training he will be the last guy you wish to see xD

Whoa the colonel is so well spoken and charismatic 😮 respect
Thank you for your service, Sir.
Here is an officer I could follow. Hard but fair. I think he adheres to the motto. Train hard Fight easy. just as it was back when I was a combat solder.
1:41 He says SAF Ranger Course is the most memorable one. Many commandos/divers also say the same, even those that went for USA navy seal BUDS.
Looks like SAF ranger course is really insane and sadistic.
currently the saf rangers course is ongoing in pasir ris camp and it sure doesn’t look easy at all

@@ericpeterson6822 whaa then really depends on luck then

Commando are usually for mono-intake, easier to get in if you are part of the intake cause you would have been able to earn your airborne badge first. Otherwise, it will be the same for most vocations, having to go through interviews and certain background checks. Having a degree doesn't qualify you to be an officer immediately although it does make it easier. During the course of training, you will be assessed to see if you are a good fit to either be a specialist or an officer, otherwise, just a regular commando, and your path will go from there.
i heard there are no Singaporean Malay in Commando...
Actually now have already. But in what way is that a big deal, may I ask?
nothing really spectacular in that story exactly,, except for that uniform full of badges 🪂

@@samueltay539 Agreed.
I thought SAF also got special forces tab?
@Raye Soh But what's the difference between SF tab and the us SF badge?
SAF SF tab worn on shoulder.
The SAF version only awarded after the official creation of the SOTF and the Joint SF Qualification Course (JSFQC). The badge is not retroactively awarded to past graduated members of the respective courses from CDO and NDU. Hence those with SAF's SF tab that you may see in press photos or on official SAF social media are usually junior ranks (esti. below MAJ and 3WO); the course not very new, not very old also hence MAJ/3WO is about the right rank that you start seeing the 1st batch of JSFQC members attain.
Before JSFQC and SOTF though, there exist an unofficial (from what i understand) SOF badge which is just their unit logo.
@@myrs4 Pretty sure it's official. Those who graduate from SOF course will get a badge for it. It's up to them if they want to display it on their uniform (apart from certain situation where they are required to wear it), most don't.
@@myrs4 our SF tab is just to show you've passed SFQC. Doesn't mean you are SOF. Apparently, there is like a grading system. Abit like how NSFs get selected for SCS or OCS. Only the top performers of SFQC will get slots into the SOF course itself, while the rest will end up as regular commandos under CRF.
Tough question, who do u think is our national enemies
Yo mama
Diplomatic and politically correct answer would be that Singapore’s enemies are terrorist, threats and attacks. But I wonder if we were to put a finger on it, would it be fair to say that we are largely defending against Malaysian and Indonesian aggression.

Extract from The Third World to First - The Singapore Story: 1965 -2000
He [Mahathir] was direct and asked what we were building the SAF [Singapore Armed Forces] for. I (Lee Kuan Yew)replied equally directly that we feared that at some time or other there could be a random act of madness like cutting off our water supplied which they [the Malaysians] had publicly threatened whenever there were differences between us … In [the Separation] agreement, the Malaysian government had guaranteed our water supply. IF this was breached,we would go to the UN Security Council. If water shortage became urgent, in an emergency,we would have to go in, forcibly if need be, to repair damaged pipes and machinery to restore the water flow. I was putting my cards on the table. He denied that such precipitate action would happen. I said I believe that he would not do this, but we had to be prepared for all contingencies.”

Placing the rank to the center is one of the most unstylish things done by the SAF. It makes every soldier looking like a transformer robot!
follow american style , as usual
@@sdqsdq6274 the Americans did not have it that way. You can search on their latest uniform.
There's a tactical reason for that. Older uniforms with epaulets on the shoulders or sleeves as with the NCOs makes it easier for enemies to identify the rank of that person. It also helps reduce discomfort caused by the shoulder tabs and buttons.
@@joshuatan6841 Thanks. I was informed of the reason a while ago. Still, it is a tasteless design, as it takes away the smartness and pride from the soldiers. Most countries didn't do that...not even the Americans who are the most advanced militarily.

Can Col Hoo confirm this news?
10 years ago, Malaysia has quietly shown Singapore over how weak it security was. Malaysia has slapped the Singapore armed forces in ways that caused it to come unstuck. The most dramatic was when Malaysia's Commandos invaded Singapore high security air missiles base in Bukit Batok overlooking the Straits of Johore and pasted Malaysian stamps on the missiles and replaced the Singapore flag on the Commanding officer's table with the Malaysian flag. Several Singapore officers resigned or were reassigned or demoted. This is based on true incident happened but was not formally published!
Funny… parroting some story that first made its rounds 20 years ago. That there ain’t any such facility in Bukit Batok tells you how much truth in this story.
lol... BB is in the center of SG how to overlook the straits of Johor...
Salam bro, aku orang Singapura. Dah tinggal Bukit Batok selama 18 tahun dari tahun 2004 semenjak aku pertama kali pindah ke sini dari Yew Tee. Bukit Batok tak ade pangkalan tentera lah. Paper generals....
I respect the badges but they're all from past accomplishments (which can be more than 10 years ago), remember that. Unfortunately army soldiers arent like sportsmen who have to prove themselves everyday. Look at Federer, he can win a thousand grand slams to his name, but his ability is plain to see when he has to go onto the court each time, not the same for these soldiers. I recommend that soldiers should get re-certified to continue to wear these badges.
The badges mean one have went through the course and have the knowledge and skills. It's like driving license. To have the knowledge and skills how to drive but not necessary have to drive daily.
@@Jack-hy2ki well you dont know if he still has the "skills" or "knowledge", because these are all from the past. These soldiers (especially commanders who move up the ranks to do other types of admin work) dont have to practice and "re-earn" these badges every few years to prove their worth, unlike for example a first aid certification. That's a problem with the system. They get the badge 20 years ago and wear it for life even if they no longer have the skills, knowledge or fitness. I've seen many like that. Honestly, it's a badge just to show off, without much accountability.
@@Jejdjejbfjf so u saying those with driving licence and didn't drive for a very long time they forgotten how to drive? Hahahahaha.
@@Jejdjejbfjf these commanders they still needs those courses skills and knowledge to plan, to write reports, to improvise, to recommend, for meetings with foreign commanders in joint exercise, to understand what his men are talking about to him and list goes on.
So u still think the same now?
@@Jack-hy2ki yeah. I know many people who dont dare to drive despite having a licence because they know how much proficiency they have lost. Even so, it's a poor comparison because these commando badges are a lot more complex than driving. If it's as easy as driving, anyone can become a commando with these badges hahahaha
As a commando, he doesn't even have a buildup muscular body and looks fit. Just like an ordinary soldier. No wonder, it looks like school childten
If you're getting your impression of special forces from movies or military shows and parades, you'd be disappointed to how they look like in actual. Most soldiers are not bulky with muscles or what you would call "hot". They're just physically fit. Special Operators too are like this. Having big muscles are also a bit disadvantageous as muscles are heavy and requires quite a heavy amount of calorie upkeep. Most militaries do offer gym or some form of gym for their personnel and a lot of them do use this. But that does not mean they're busy getting their muscles toned. Getting your muscles toned for looks is not part of the program.
And like what the other guy said, Asian body.
He should teach those at school for those school cadets.
If you're actually a commando or a soldier, you'll know that the fastest guys are always the lean type. Not the bulky type, the first to get tired out is always the bulky type, they're stronger, but most of the, isnt as fit as the leaner guys.
I think you're an idiot poser, please save yourself the embarrassment and stfu.
I reckon you've watched too much Hollywood movies. Body size are NOT a requirement, as long as you are able to clear all the required training/selections/test/etc with "flying colors", you are good to go. Fitness requirements are usually higher/tougher for commandos than the rest (CDO/NDU/PTI are in the same bracket). Besides many would treat that as the very minimum standard (most of them are able to perform well beyond what is required).
Carrying heavy load, like rifles/etc, over a distance of more than 50km and still able to fight/complete the mission after that are kinda basic requirements for soldiers. If he went topless, you will see a muscular fit body under those uniform.
If you google world strongest man and look at their body, they won't look like those well defined
body builder type with 6 packs, etc. But it is a fact that they are strong. Power lifter are similar too.
Bruce Lee buff and look fit with clothes on?
I was told they couldn't leave anything behind during mission include their poop.
Not sure it's true. 🤔
A guy from my coy was told to bring his poop back from outfield because his was found by our commander. We waited for him to scoop it up while in push-up position :)
true, they made us count our toilet paper as well how much used (in ziplocks) and non used
