Nancy is completing the Quilt As You Go series, Block by Block with this tutorial. Her Learning To Quilt book (available at www.onpoint-tv...) takes you through all the techniques used for the blocks. She also used Beth Donaldson's Block by Block book (out of print but available on Ebay or online bookstores).
In this tutorial, Nancy is using a book by Marti Michell called, Machine Quilting in Sections, to help with adding the borders to the quilt. The book is available at a quilt shops and online.
Nancy first shares some different quilted tile blocks she has done. You can find a free download of one of the quilted tiles designs in the www.onpoint-tv.... Hopefully this tile will help you design your own additional blocks.
Nancy has four QAYG blocks sewn together, appliquilted and quilted. She is ready to add the borders. Complete the quilting on all the sashings and cornerstones before adding borders.
Make your large borders ahead of time by cutting or tearing your backing fabric the length of grain. Then cut batting the same size as the border but a half of an inch smaller on one of the long sides. Attach the batting to the backing using fusible tape (Heat Press Batting Together or Marti's Choice Fusible Tape by Marti Michell). Place this border with the batting side down on your work surface and the backing fabric up. Now take the quilt top and lay it on top so both backing fabrics are together. Add an inner border on top (optional). Pin everything together adding a pin about every two inches. Sew a quarter of an inch seam allowance (not a scant quarter of an inch due to all the bulk that needs to be sewn and it is a little too narrow when sewing everything together). Using a walking foot, sew one back stitch to secure and continue sewing over the needles. Go slowly. Use an 80 or 90 needle to handle the thickness. Hold the back and the front of the quilt while it goes through the machine. Have enough space behind your sewing machine for the quilt to rest as you sew. Finish with a back stitch to lock the end of sewing in place.
Nancy takes the quilt back to her cutting table and shows how the large border with the fusible tape is sewn to the small inner border. As she lays it out flat, the smaller inner border has the quilt batting from the large border behind it with less bulk. She flips out the inner border and presses it with her iron. She has an outer border to add. Again pin the same way with a pin in about every two inches. Sew, flip over and press in place. Add your large borders all the way around the quilt. Quilt the borders. Finish with a binding (tinyurl.com/y2....

I am hand sewing a very large quilt with a pieced T-shirt/hoodie backing which has a frame around the centre and two borders. I wanted to match my front with a frame and two borders as well and I didn’t know how to do it. My local quilt shop suggested I layer the backing and batting as normal then layer my centre fabric just past the inner frame and baste and quilt it, though allowing 1/2 for the seams. My batting is about 8 inches wider than the backing all round. I’ve basted up to and slightly past the inner frame but was hesitant about quilting it because I wasn’t sure. After watching this video and learning so much, I will now start quilting it and then attach the first frame, then the two borders yet I will still keeping my batting intact. Thank you once again for all your tutorials. You have no idea how much you’ve helped me.

Since I do not have a big space I now do all my quilts in the QAYG Method. The last one I did was scrappy from 3/4 inch to 51/2 inch strips in all kinds of designs. I also did a Triple Irish Chain Quilt as a QAYG last year. I have since found a better way to do it and thank you to you I have learned more easier ways to do it that make the back look great. Thank you for being one of the better teachers who are sharing how we can do them. If you would like to see the two major ones I did, let me know so you can share the photos with others to prove that you can do almost anything in the QAYG Method.

This is the only video that helps me with multiple borders and it’s my first quilt as you go. I wish I had seen where you added both borders top and bottom because I’m not sure if you add those alone first or not. In the video you showed the top and the side already joined. Also thank you for mentioning Marti Michell because I bought her tape.

Great series which has encouraged me to have a go at this technique. I love piecing and the machine quilting has always daunted me because of the bulk on my domestic sewing machine. I am sure with this method I will enjoy my quilting much more so thankyou.

I've been making the Splendid Sampler 2 blocks (and a stack and whack type crazy quilt) and with Allyssa from Penguin and fish and yourself I've plucked up the courage to do quilt as you go for the first time. As a fairly new quilter 6 quilts I have to say it's a brilliant technique to practice fmq as you don't need to struggle against the heft of the quilt. I was getting worried about adding borders but thanks to your tutorial today I think I'll be fine. I just wish we had as much choice and value for fabrics here in the UK as you do in North America! Thanks again.

Oh my Goodness! I am a new quilter... matter of fact I’m also new at sewing (1 1/2 years) and being as ambitious as I have always been, lol, I’m working on a queen sized quilt on a home sewing machine. I’ve got almost the entire top of this quilt pieced in three sections. I’ve been struggling to work out how to add the inner border and outside borders to this quilt. You just answered all my questions with this video. Thank you so much for your guidance.

Nancy I want to thank you for this QAYG series! I have the books you recommend but my learning style is watch and do versus reading and having this on You Tube has been a godsend!! I still had some questions but got threw it and made a super queen sized Bear Paw quilt using most of your methods. One thing I could not figure out is when making the blocks and sewing them together do you sew to the end of the batting edge or 1/4” from the edge? It seemed like I missed something as when I put the rows together I had to take out some of the stitching.
