- Ultra Trail Australia was a critical race for me. My first race post-Tarawera 100 Miler DNF and it was a hell of a day out on the trails. With the original course back in all its 100k 4460m of vert glory it was never going to be easy.

Awesome man! How good was the finish and to hear the dulcet tones of Matt Rayment! Now that is a personal welcome home and job well done! I bet you were glad for where you live and having Karamatura, Mt Donald McLean, Whatipu and all the other West Coast on your doorstep to train given the stairs and vert at UTA100. Well done, super inspiring brother!
Thanks Shaun. It was great to see Matt at the finish, and his was the best ever race line introduction! I felt a bit undertrained because I had an attack of hamstring tendinopathy and I definitely did not do enough specific hills and stairs work, but I was glad of the time spent on the Karamatura stairs definitely. Really pleased to have just finished the damn thing though.
Congratulations again on completing this hard race! And… another well made video..! 👍
Thanks Seawon. Really pleased to have got it done. Congratulations on your UTA finish!
Good stuff dude! That landscape ay, same same but different and amazing. Jeez I remember the last 12km, so hard, can relate.
Thanks Dan. It's a tough course, but in such an incredible landscape. Definitely going to come back and give it another go in a year or two.
Great effort and video Gareth, what a day! Nothing like a technicolour yawn to clear out the system mid run.
Ha, yes! Really didn't feel great at the time, but better out than in!
nice work! UTA is definitely on my list, it looks amazing out there
Thanks Billy. It's a very tough race, with a lot of stairs and much, much more vert: definitely a step up in difficulty from Tarawera, but really worth doing. Mine was only a flying visit, but next time I'm going to try and bring the family and spend a few days there as it's a beautiful area.
That seemed plenty fast to me particularly on that course. Well done, that’s a great effort. Done is what counts in any event but particularly a trail run. Congratulations.
Thank you! I quite wanted the 14 hour buckle but wasn't really in the shape to get it after problems with high hamstring tendinopathy. I'll come back another year in better shape and give it a nudge!
Well done Gaz ! That looked rough as a badgers' ......
Thanks bro, beautiful place to run but three really steep climbs to deal with.
Great video well done again
Thanks Ferruccio!
As Kungfu Panda once said, "my old enemy, STAIRS!"
Jokes aside, nice job!!!
Haha! Thanks Dan. Good luck with training for Doi Inthanon.
As you said: it wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t fast- but you got it done! Well done Gareth looks like a pretty hard course- those stairs!😅
Thanks Bevan! After a poor result at Tarawera because of my own bad pace judgment it was great to get a solid finish, even if it wasn't an amazing result in and of itself.
Great to see you back on the Trails Gareth, thanks for the inspo, I got an Old Ghost Road entry this week which I'm happy about. I just need to make sure my quads don;t let me down - any theories on getting these quads stronger and cramp free?
Thank you, OGR is definitely on my list! I had an entry a few years ago but had to change plans and couldn't go. There's a couple of really good vids around about strength training for hills, but my top tips are 1) Run lots of hills, and 2) Watch David Roche's vid "3 Minute Mountain Legs" ua-cam.com/video/rYsWzRu_0Yc/v-deo.html
@@WestieRunner Much appreciated Gareth
