Excellent list of items. I'm always looking for items that are cheap, light and multi use. Tin foil is definitely going in my bag. With the exception of a magnifying glass, fire making tools (lighter, matches, ferro rod, flint and steel) only have one use. Is there anything else in your bag that has only one use? I tend to think of one use items as luxuries ie. a spork, (I have and use the same one). I'd like to hear some of the excerpts from those note books, hint hint. I'm sure there are some great videos to be made from them. Sounds like a weekly segment, "Tales from Blackie's Journals."
Hey Blackie. Great video as always. Very true about everyone being different. Folks can be a great resource also. When I was growing up in the south we called them neighbors. I think that's a comforting feeling to know you don't have to be a woodsman that's best at everything as long as you're willing to work hard to contribute when situations are challenging.
I enjoyed Dave’s version of this video too from his littlebigmonkey channel if you haven’t ever watched him before you should, he’s a wealth of knowledge & just a decent type of man.
Blackie, thank you,.. I been doing this over 35 years, and I just learnt something that I had forgot,!! Keep it simple stupid. become my own worst enemy , changing up gear all the time. , truly thanks Blackie. Stay safe out there. ATVB. Scott Somerset England
More great tips Blackie, I noticed your Pen, Lighter case ect. are Orange so you can find them if you drop them on the ground. Another great tip, I have borrowed. Thanks; B.K. p.s. Who remembers Jiffy Pop.
I clicked on this video just for shits a giggles and ended up actually picking a few things up and i love it when that happens. Got you a new sub bro . Ooorah.
tin foils a great idea and has multiple uses , but I would ditch the one use only spork ( unless you also use it as a back scratcher) and carry a knife instead, you can make chopsticks or a small spatula to eat with in seconds and if you keep the spatula in an inside pocket then you have dry wood to make a feather stick in an emergency.
I've enjoyed your channel for a few years now. But I've really started appreciating the excellent content you put out. It's practical, simple, and isnt something you've copied from someone else - it comes from years of experience. The foil tip is a prime example as are the other items you mention. Thanks for all the information you pass on.
5 items just make no sense, it is not enough. I would never want to go out without sleeping bag/blanket and tarp/poncho and at least a basic insulation against the ground. (I don't live in the south, it's cold and nasty here 9 months of the year) Such things are as hard to make in nature as a knife and cordage. The 10 Cs and some luxury items are my minimum. Let's call it "cc's 16 Cs" :- ) So, if I should suggest 5 items to a beginner, I would tell him forget about it xD 5 times. Your idea to bring Aluminium foil is a very good tipp. If you can carry something that is small, lightweight and has a multitude of uses - bring it.
You know Blackie you owe me a challenge from a couple years ago. You got 100 feet of paracord and an injured companion that you must move 1/2 mile. Other than your Kukri no other tools or gear. Everything lost when you dumped the canoe in the Rapids and you buddy is hurt bad. Broken arm, and leg. Ruff tumble through the rapids for that boy. You have nothing but scrapes. Still think you can get it done?
i thought hard about this..it would be a travoise with a hod type of yoke so ya can stop and rest easy and not have to set him down so much..yep thats gonna have to be a video to answer that one....let me see what i can do
fireman's lift ,no tools needed, I once carried a 14 stone man who was a simulated casualty across rough ground ( you couldn't use trails) for 1 and a half miles to an extraction point. as long as your relatively fit and the casualty isn't 30 stone then it's doable. of course I know the scenario is hypothetical but why move an injured man at all, make him comfortable and you run the half mile to get help 👍
yes..a haversack..is quick items to use i na hike or some other activity..a rucksack carries much more and can be set up to be a camping bag i will be doing a series on this very soon
Awesome content.... keep it up
Thank you! Will do!
Great choices Blackie. The notebook is an essential item. Thanks for sharing
I think so too!

Hi :) That is "reallybigmonkey1" and you are right...very informative and jolly fellow :)
I like the way you approached this as what you wished you would have had carried in the begging. Thanks for the video brother.

I like the concept of 5 Items for a beginner. Very interesting. Thanks Blackie.
Glad you liked it!
Good video and useful items. For me #1 a loud whistle on your person 24/7. #2 some sort of compass even just a button compass.

Great video. Until you explained it I wouldn't have thought aluminum foil was so important.
Thank you!
Thanks for another fine video and inspiration ATB from Vietnam Sam Adler
