Good advises. But as a 60 yo I want to add: have something in your life that you do just for fun, something you just play around with, something you _don't_ strive to be good at but do just for the joy of it. And if one day you don't enjoy it anymore, leave it behind without regret, be happy for the things you learned, and find something new to be your "play ground".

Yes! This is a good one. There are people who will push you to get a job doing something as soon as you're halfway decent at it. My sister tried to push me to do art as a job, and my mom pushed me to do music for a job. The problem, I told them, is that I love doing those things, and being forced to do it for 8-10 hours a day will completely suck the joy out of the only things that bring me any joy. Not everything good in life has to be for profit

Yes, I agree! I started learning flute a few years ago because I missed playing music in my high school and university days (I'm 33). I never play for anyone else, I just go to my weekly lesson and honestly don't practice that much, but I really enjoy my lessons and I don't have any goal to perform with anyone, I just enjoy going as a hobby and I don't see anything wrong with that! I'm not striving to master the skill or anything, it's just for fun and I like it that way!

Agreed - I paint. I paint worse than a 5 year old but it's so much fun! And as long as I love it, I'll keep doing it, regardless of how bad it looks xD (I'm smart enough not to make a career out of it though - not that I'd want that anyway). I'm happy to have it just for me.

I am sprinting tovards 30 so I added my "I Wish I Knew Before 30"
    1. Do not gossip. Tell good or neutral things about person or, if there is a problem, talk with that person.
    2. Do not think "What others think of me" especially those who are not the closest to you. Usually "others" don't think about you at all. So, be proud at skills which you have, do stuff and hobbies which you like, wear clothes which are comfoetable for you and don't be apologetic about that.

    • @eiralinnea
      @eiralinnea Місяць тому +4

So very! Both of these. Gossip gets to to ears of the one who is being gossiped about, good to keep in mind. And yes, life is too short to always do what others think is good, just do your thing - related to "just do it"- and you'll be ok.

My Father at 90 would tell us you'll live longer if you learn something new every day. One of those new things was when he was 96, we both built a Bowed Zither together which neither of us had ever done before. He died on his feet laughing and joking with family when he was almost 100 years old after enjoying a full day tending his garden and fruit trees.
If you don't change then you stop improving.

    Contracting is SO important!!
Look at it as mutual respect. Both of you tell the other what you want to do for them, and you together figure out who takes responsibility for fringe cases.
Most people who do not want to contract with you will expect more. Even in an employment contract setting, if your employer comes to you with a "formal update" understand what changes!
    All these are so important.
I worked for a big corp where we had an updated policy on company assets, and the update was that they formalized reckless damages in contract.
We had to go "ok what is reckless, and what is not reckless", legal was just going "you know reckless", we started giving examples and basically if its not a meteor strike YOU are reckless.
So obviously that "formalization" needed toning down.

Along the lines of #5, if you do not complain, nothing will ever improve or change. So stop thinking complaining is wrong, distasteful, or bad. If you are miserable, or see something making people miserable, point it out to people that can fix it (or do it yourself if you can). I spent too much of my life not doing so... now people thank me for it because things improve for everyone.

I'm 27 so I'm gonna add the most important two lessons I've learnt in my whole life so far.
1: Be yourself even if it makes you different. Due to the area I grew up in, how I look, and my family background I had a weird triple-identity where I was local to the area but my family was from the other side of the planet and even in our native area I didn't look like everyone else. So I had three groups that I was a part of, but I never fit in perfectly with any of them. Naturally, I tried to play into each of the groups to fit in more, but I think people could always see that it was a character to some extent. It was only after I got sick of it and just decided to be only who I am that I started to find people who liked me for who I am, and most importantly I stopped feeling like an imposter. I fit in only when I accept that I am different from everyone else. People respect the authenticity of it.
2: Know your own intentions and motivations. When you feel a certain way or you want to make a decision, think about exactly why that is. I can say with 100% confidence that every regret I have is because I didn't challenge myself before doing or saying something. Maybe it was something I said when I was angry. Maybe it was something I did when I wasn't thinking clearly. My biggest regret is actually because I did and said things that I THOUGHT were the normal, socially acceptable things to do in the situation. That leads back into the "be yourself, don't act a character because you don't even know the script" thing.
Also a bonus one! If you're anywhere younger than 22 (maybe younger, maybe older), realize that your decisions are more likely than not flawed beyond what you can imagine. There's experiences that you're going to go through that will feel completely devastating and extremely unfair. You will get through them, and you will have a better understanding of the world afterwards. If someone who you trust and respect (maybe parents, teachers, or whoever else) tells you something that you don't like or seems mean, ask them to explain why they think that. They might have gone through the exact same thing and are trying to guide you through the minefield in the least painful way. Some people are actually just dicks, but consider it, at least. You can be wrong, and sometimes someone shifting your perspective just one inch can make you see the massive hole you were about to walk into.

    • @mackenzierobinson4702
      @mackenzierobinson4702 Місяць тому +1

Thank you for those eye-openers! Your first point and bonus are things that I’ve been learning the hard way myself. Like you, but for different reasons, I’ve also spent my life feeling ostracized and different from the people I was surrounded by. And learning to stop feeling bad about my own differences was one of the hardest things I’d ever done and it took me through some major shifts in my mental health. But I’ve never felt more at peace with myself than I feel now. And even though I still revert sometimes, I really love who I’ve become.
And that bonus is definitely something that I’m coming to realize currently. I’m still in college and only 21, I’ll be 22 in a few days, but I feel like most of the decisions I’ve been making are going to put me through hell when I’m older. I don’t know what the future holds but all I can do is hope that I’m doing the right things and keep moving forward

I am 15 years older than you but thank you for always teaching me things and inspiring me. I do agree with these life lessons which I have learned in my life as well. As someone turning 40 this year, agree with all of this and will also add: listen to your gut. You don’t have to blindly follow it if it’s not a split second decision you have to make, but generally, you won’t go wrong listening to your gut if it sends you a warning because that is your brain’s way of telling you that something about the situation reminds it of a bad situation you were in before. The good sort of feeling is less reliable because our brains are better attuned to avoiding risk than predicting an outcome (naturally).😊

I agree with it in the sense of "If you've done all that you could to prepare, accept the results". For example, I never feel ready, because you could always do better. But if I've done everything to practice and prepare, the result will be whatever the result is. Feel bad for not preparing, feel bad about the parts you ignored, not the mistake you tried so hard to avoid.

I love this video so much! I have tears in my eyes while watching it, as I think about all the pains that you must have been through so that you can learn all these things, and you are smiling while telling the stories... Bro all the things you guys've mentioned in your video, I just, ahhhhh, I hope it's can be a conversation between you and me, so that you can see me nodding and agreeing and telling you guys I understand or I've been there or this is useful, and most importantly, you guys are doing great😭😭😭 Eddy, you make magnificent sound on your violin! I've been to both of your concerts in Singapore, seating at different locations of the concert hall, and your violin sings beautifully all the time (not saying that Brett's not, but just i feel like i have to say this to Eddy, if he ever read this). You guys are only turning 30 yet you've already gone through so many things, learned so many lessons, and reached so many milestones. Yet there are times when I still peak a bit of you guys in your early twenty😢 I really want to tell you guys in person that you are doing great, both in making music and in promoting classical music. I'm so glad to see that you guys are in a very healthy mindset! I learned so much from you guys, ever since I started watching you a long time ago. I wonder what Brett’s big motivation has been, to get him to take the risks with Eddy.

Can I share some of my favorite quotes about life? _"Everything good and bad is just one moment in life, (virtues) of the person are more important than his professional achievements. We came to this life to be human, not (profession like teacher/musician) but to be human first of all. We should cherish spiritual values and human qualities."_
_"For some people, material values are more important than anything, for others it's the moral values. You need to determine what you actually want for yourself... I'm still learning, because life is a continuous learning process..."_

Thank you so much for the lovely advice / conversation. I don't play a musical instrument often so I spun a bit of the advice into my own terms, for example the #14, how to make a good sound, for me meant how to translate my thoughts clearly & positively to my loved ones. Also, here's a numbered list of the advice headlines:
    1. It never hurts to ask
    2. Know yourself
    3. Don't be afraid to take [smart] risks
    4. Watch out for people who are too agreeable
    5. Do speak up (helps your relationships)
    6. Actions speak louder than words
    7. Contracts! (make them, keep them, read them, etc. )
    8. Cherish those around you
    9. Don't waste time (very sorry to hear about your loss, really accurate nothing wakens you up like losing a parent)
    10. Think for yourself
    11. The best liars are ones that lie to themselves
    12. Never sacrifice your health
    13. Perform as much as you can
    14. How to make a good sound
    15. Be around people who lift you up
    16. Writing is really good
    17. The world can change quickly
    18. Routines and habits are really important
    19. Never stop learning
    20. No such thing as a dumb question
    21. People aren't always how they appear online
    22. You're never going to feel ready
    23. Keep your morning free
    24. You will change
    25. Be present
    26. Learn to savor discomfort
    27. Think long term
    28. Challenging your own assumptions
    29. The power of saying NooOooOoo (golden nugget: don't let people steal your time)
    30. Learn to appreciate those that are with you and don't chase those that aren't gonna be with you (+ don't focus on the one negative thing out of many positive things)
