- This setting of Psalm 29 (originally written with orchestral accompaniment) is Elgar’s Op. 74. It was first performed at the Festival of the Sons of the Clergy at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, on 30 April 1914. This performance comes from a live BBC radio Choral Evensong broadcast from Winchester Cathedral on 7 July 2010, with the choir of Winchester Cathedral, directed by Andrew Lumsden, and Simon Bell (organ).
The score can be see via www2.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/G...)
Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty,
give unto the Lord glory and strength,
give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name.
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is upon the waters:
the God of glory thundereth;
it is the Lord that ruleth the sea.
The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty;
the voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars.
yea, he breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire,
the voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness
and strippeth the forests bare.
In His temple doth every one speak of His glory.
The Lord sitteth above the water-flood;
and the Lord remaineth a King for ever.
The Lord shall give strength unto His people;
the Lord shall give His people the blessing of peace.
This is just a masterpiece, the emotions are strong and the choir is just perfect.
I love that painting! It magnifies the majesty of the LORD! This music was also majestic as was all of Elgar's church music.
Another Divine composition from SIR Edward!
Whichever numpties disliked this clearly doesn't understand what they are listening to.
This is a masterpiece both by composer and the choir singing it.
Please don't bother expressing an opinion about things you clearly don't understand!
Eh, it could just be a few folks who don't like Elgar. Their loss!! Rather difficult to fathom what not to like.
I lost my voice for 3 months, and sang this as my comeback without rehearsal, we only sang it once!!!
What an idiot. Clearly he doesn't realise that Lumsden is a poor successor to David Hill. Tbf, no one could do better than him.
one of Elgar's best pieces
I think perhaps his finest Cathedral music piece. Not for amateurs - always a first rate Cathedral choir like this one. Basically professionals who know what they're doing. One of my favourite all time pieces
Lovely performance. Many thanks.
Singing this masterpiece on 3 June 23 at Southwell Minster UK!
It is wonderful.
For an atheist he was able to produce some of the most beautiful sacred music. God sure moves in mysterious ways.
He was a Catholic??
He was definitely a devout Catholic!!
Epic
There's a big old wobbly bass in that choir
There's 4 - all fine musicians!
