Omg...I've been so worried about when and how and then I found you!! THANK YOU! I am so grateful that I now know that I've been cutting off all the next years blooms which makes so much sense. Now I know why mine had hardly any flowers. Thank you Kelly. Oh, and I live on beautiful Vancouver Island in Nanaimo BC, Canada.
Just starting with anabelle hydrangea in Ireland (zone 8-9). People here seems to cut to the ground in late autumn or winter, but I really like the idea of leaving some structure to support the new growth. Thanks for all the info!
I love hydrangeas but I just don’t have ideas on how to grow them correctly, until now. I’ve got some hydrangea plants as a mother’s day presents from my husband and I’d love to grow them as beautiful as yours. Thank you for sharing tips and helpful informations about them. Love from Tennessee.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, KELLY--OUR HYDRANGIAS BLOOMED BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS THIS YEAR, SO I JUST CUT THE DEAD STICKS OUT--NOT MANY, BUT HAD BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS THIS SEASON...

Well this solves my problem. Never read about them but every year just thought I needed to cut down for the winter to only get green leaves in the summer no blooms. This year I had one pink bloom. So it’s nov 5 2022. I will leave them completely alone. Excited to see what it does in spring/summer brings. Thanks
I waited end of August Scotland and removed dried out flowers and damaged leaves. They have lots of good strong new shoots.I trowelled in some slow release granules to see them through the winter. X fingers I have done the right thing. Mine are growing in pots and can cloche them during strong winds and severe cold weather.

Thank you for the video. We live in Alabama and have a lady who tends our garden for us. Unfortunately, she got hurt and can't work right now. She trims them back every year down to the 18" you were talking about because the area isn't that big. Every year we get some amazing blooms. I didn't know what time of year to do it, so watching this video gave me the right information on when to do it. The weather here in North West Alabama usually turns cooler right around Halloween. I will wait till late November to tackle that job.
Thank you for this! I inherited my mother’s plants and I never asked her how she maintained them. I’d hate to lose her flowers. From the Carolinas here!
Thanks for educating me on my hydrangeas that I don’t even know what kinds they are and I guess I have been lucky in my pruning of them every year because they have been really inconsistent in bulb sizes and colors. I live in So. Calif.
Dallas, Texas. My grandmother grew hydrangeas on their farm, but I am clueless. I moved into a house with big leaf hydrangeas, which now have cercospora on them. I’m trying to figure out if I should prune all the affected leaves off to prevent it from affecting new growth. Glad to find your channel!
This past spring, after watching lots of videos & not having tons of blooms in the past, I pruned mine. Terrific blooms! BUT then as summer wore on, I had some strange white stuff on some leaves. It looked like coarse kosher salt. Research revealed that it was hydrangea borers. The treatment was to cut them back until there was not hollow stalk left & then seal them with nail polish. After a few hours of work, I quit. I hope they live!
Hi Kelly! This is Nancy Doub in Kokomo IN (north of Indy):) Thank you so much for the super helpful videos! My husband and I purchased our home six years ago which I selected largely because of its having a large corner lot with 27 hydrangeas around the property!! I just love them!! James San Diego, Southern Cal. growing on north side of house, it seems to be best here. We have Mop head Hydrangea's. You gave the best over all education on growing tips. Your just a natural and pleasant to watch. Thank you!
Oops, I pruned my plant already (Aug), trying to get rid of the parts with spots. Hope I left enough to look good next year here in Delaware. The spots are really bad so I will clean out the junk under the plant and give it more air like you suggest. I like your laid back style !
Thank you! Atlanta here. Love our huge limelights, won’t touch. Their roots creeped through a tiny hole from a tiny cracked planter. Will not try to break it apart. They get full full sun. I’ve covered couple branches w dirt and have made several new plantings.
From Delaware....we always prune and noticed that we don’t get as many blooms. I will not prune this year and see if we get more blooms next year. Thanks for the tips!
Hello from Edmonton Alberta! My hydrangea is in a pot. I brought it in to winter it in my garage once it stops blooming. Mi will likely plant it in the ground next spring. Loved your comments on pruning.
Very helpful. This is my first year growing hydrangea (Nikko macrophylla and dwarf Limelight), I love them but have been nervous about when/if to prune, etc., so thank you. I live in western Pennsylvania.
I pruned hard last fall and sure enough no summer bloom. Plant is now getting leggy and is in a large pot. Thanks for tips, I am in zone 9b Northern California.
From Pittsburgh! Thanks for your advice! Was going to prune in fall but love the idea of giving place for birds, other animals place to enjoy! Very helpful insights!
We live in North Dakota with very snowy, windy, below zero weather. The hydrangeas are taking over the whole flowerbed and sidewalk. Not sure what to do with them. They are the Annabel variety. I’ll keep watching you videos to see what to do.
Greetings from Montreal Canada. I never cut my hydrangeas. I have several varieties. In the spring I simply trim the dry flower heads. They are my favorites in my fall garden. I love your channel.
@@KellyLehman Kelly. Thank you. I wish I can show you how they look. My upmost favorites are the Strawberry pink hydrengias. They grow tall. Later on they become this beautiful dark pink. I never knew much about them at first. I never cut them. Every year they bloom amazingly. This year I planted 2 anabelles end of summer. They had leaves. I knew they will not bloom this year. I can't wait to see them next year.
So fun hearing about your hydrangeas . I have a few pinky winkies that i love . i just added one of your comments to one of my videos for others to learn from . Thank you 👍👍🌸😊
Hi Daryl, yes permission to not prune is granted . See how they do next year with the no pruning rule in tact . Wishing you loads of blooms next summer . 🌸🌸
Thanks Kelly! I live in Tiffin, Ohio, which is NW Ohio. I think I am in Zone 5. I've been raking leaves like crazy lately. Usually, we have the entire Women's Softball team from Heidelberg University help us, now that our sons are grown and gone, but with Covid we had to do it ourselves. I'm still finishing the beds, pulling weeds and I'm about to go buy mulch. Thanks! Take care and enjoy!!
You definitely have beautiful hydrangeas ! Thanks for the tips ! I come from the "land of hydrangeas - the AZORES, (St. Michael), but i had never grown them until 2 years ago. I did prune them - big mistake, because they didn't grow or bloom for that time. Now i know better, thank you ! Your video was a great help !
My hydrangea just flops over at the end of the summer when the season changes. I've always just cut them back to the first 'nub' from the bottom. They come back beautifully the next year with lots of flowers. I'm in central CA near Sacramento
Hi Ellen , Sounds like you have a great hydrangea plan . So happy to hear your flowers come back each year . You must prune them at a great time each year . What kind do you grow ? 🌸👏👏👏
Thank you for your great advice! I'm here in Northern California...and it's a good thing I saw your video. I was just about to go out and prune my hydrangeas down! Now I'll just sit and relax in the garden! Many thanks!
@@KellyLehman Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing the great tips. We also reside in Northern California. We have 28 bushes of mophead, lacecaps and annabelle white hydrangeas, most of them are grown on old woods. Questions: Now we are in mid July here, is it fine that we remove the blooms and prune down to 1/3 of the stems in length, in order to promote more new growths for next summer? Our hydrangeas are grown in ground. How tall should we keep them in height? A lot of articles suggest people to prune the mopheads in spring. Thanks for your detailed explanations that the information was misleading.
Congratulations on the new move . Here is a video I made showing some of the Hydrangea varieties we grow here . Hope you find them helpful HYDRANGEA VARIETIES FOR YOUR GARDEN ➡️ ua-cam.com/video/udMGg0IFZUo/v-deo.html
Kelly, I'm in Zone 5 in Central Illinois. If I follow your advice and leave my hydrangaes alone this fall, what do I do with them in the spring? Do you do a spring deadheading of any dried flowers still on the plant? Do I cut back 1/3 of the plant? Or just leave them alone in the spring, as well? Thanks! BTW - I have Endless Summer, Firelight, LIttle Lime, Annabelle and Twist 'n Shout hydrangaes around our property.
HEYYYY KELLY--HOW THOSE HYDRANGIES DOING, MINE ARE JUST BEAUTIFULLL THIS SEASON, WISH I COULD SEND YOU A PICTURE--HOPE ALL IS WELL, AND HAPPY BLOOMINGGG--GARRY.
I am in Toronto. I Like your tips to maintain healthy growth. I have question about the color. What is the right time to use the feed to change acidity of soil to get nice blue flowers like yours. Thank you
From Northwest Indiana. I was wondering why my limelight’s were HUUUGE this year. It’s bc I pruned to 1/3 size for the first time since we planted (4.5 years). I will Leave them Alone for another few years but wow I had to prune- they were so big and wide I couldn’t walk through my garage door without fighting the limelight’s :) Thank you for the information.
Hi Nancy , So fun to read when someone has a similar garden experience to mine . I am doing the same with one of my Limelight hydrangeas in the back of my garden . It is so giant , i can't walk past it . I will prune this big mama back in winter and leave the other Limelight hydrangeas in tact . 🌸😊👏
I’m in southwest PA. My hydrangea is getting too big for the space I have it. Too tall and over growing on a sidewalk and driveway. In past years, I would prune in the spring being careful to leave new growth buds on the stems. Sadly this year I got maybe 6 flowers at the bottom of the plant but the bush grew tall and wide with lots of green leaves. I need to reduce the size and since I didn’t have many flowers this year, I don’t know what to do to a) keep a smaller size and b) produce more flowers.
Maybe do a small plant clean up to get it off the driveway and sidewalk now . Then in spring , take a look at where the new growth buds are forming on the stem and decide which stems and flower you can live without and trim those back a little more 🌸
In pensacola fl I will not prune my limelite only the second season and had few blooms so I’m hoping for stronger stems by not pruning... thanks great info!!
Unbelievable! Just got back from transplanting a hydrangea into our church memory garden. I asked about pruning it back and my partner said, "No, just leave it - it's already got next year's growth buds." I come home and here's your video!
Hi from Kelown B.C. I have lots of lovely hydrangeas and have pruned and not pruned from year to year. This seas0n I shall let them be and see how big they get. There are some along a path that will, have to be managed for size though!
Hi Marion , sounds like a good hydrangea plan to me 👏 I experiment with my hydrangea pruning too . Now I need to tweak the fertilizer game with them . Do you use any fertilizers ? I usually don’t but I’m going to start trying some out to see if I get better blooms .
Milford, MA and I have three hydrangeas now that look to have been in this yard for years. Not sure what type but one is a standard, one is a variegated, and one is a hardier version...not quite sure yet. I want to make sure i trim them correctly so i haven't touched the two standard looking ones. But the hardy one I cut back to about 18 inches at the beginning of fall because it was too overgrown for its location. Hopefully, i can maintain its height. Your info was very helpful. Thank you.
Hi Dot , sounds like a plan 👍 Often times , hydrangeas will come back to the same large size even after they are pruned back the season before . If this happens , you can always consider transplanting the large hydrangea next season when it goes dormant . Good luck 👍 🌸🌸😊
Thanks so much Juley . i'm addicted to growing hydrangeas too . I can't get enough of them and they keep coming out with new hydrangea varieties gaaaaaa. 😊😊😊😊
We had a LATE frost this Spring so all the buds died on my hydrangea. No blooms all Summer but, the green branches & leaves had a huge surge of growth. It now stands 6 ft. tall!! It's 4 ft wide & taking over 1/2 of my garden. Another video said to prune in Fall if it usn't too cold out so I did. Now you say don't prune in Fall. Sol now what? Will I get buds in Spring? And how do I deal with the big size of plant? 😮
It’s usually not a good idea to prune in fall since you may cut off next years blooms if it is a Mophead hydrangea . Pruning also may trigger a growth spurt which you don’t want since the plant will most likely be going dormant soon if you live in a cooler fall climate . I would wait until early spring to give the hydrangea a reshaping so it does not look so wild and large in your garden. Just know that if it’s a Mophead hydrangea you may be cutting off some blooms as you shape it . If it’s a limelight or a smooth hydrangeas you don’t have to worry about cutting off those new blooms on last years wood since these hydrangeas push forth their flowers on new growth that is coming out in spring . So stay away from the fresh green stems on those 🌸
Help needed in CT! We purchased two potted hydrangeas on Cape Cod two years ago, one blue and the second is a lacecup. They did great on our partially shaded patio on the Cape for two years. We brought them back to CT last fall and cut one way back, caged both and filed with leaves & pine needles for the winter on our elevated wooden deck. They both were slow to show growth this spring, with the non-pruned doing better on the deck which gets good morning sun. Yet they both are far behind previous years (even after fertilizing). Any thoughts??
Hi Doug , did you replant your hydrangeas in a larger pot this year . Chances are I two years there was a lot of root and plant growth and a f they are in tue same pot, the roots may now be so thick that they are getting root bound and blocking the water that the plant needs to absorb. I would try to replant in a larger pot but first break up the roots if they are tightly wrapped around the plant .
Good video. I wish you would have addressed dead heading all types, even those blooming on old growth. We’re not sure what types we have so we “tidy up” things, don’t cut all the way back, but don’t let them alone either. We’re in eastern Maryland, near Annapolis. Edit - I see that you do have a separate video on “dead heading” - so, I’m off to watch it. 👍
Hi Mark, you can deadhead all varieties without worrying about loosing blooms to over pruning . Make the cut just below the bloom and above a set of leaves . A slight tidying up of the plant is usually ok with all varieties too . Cutting back a few overgrown branches should be fine . 🌸
@@KellyLehman Hi there. Thanks, i see that you also have a video on this subject. I’ll go watch now. Our problem, we don’t know what type we have. 😩. I’m guessing old type since they have been here a good 20 years.
Sounds like yo may have too much nitrogen in the soil . This would cause your hydrangea to have lots of green leaves but little blooms . you can try lowering the nitrogen level of the soil by adding some wood mulch to the base of the hydrangea . i made a few videos explaining other reasons why your hydrangeas may not be giving you blooms . Hi Kelly love the video.. my favourite plant is hydrangea ..mine started losing there leaves now and looking sad .. hate winter aproching its horrible in UK.. you and Lucy looking beautiful as ever .. god bless x 🇬🇧
Hi Wayne, I know the feeling . Winterrr is comingggg here in NJ too and my hydrangeas look beat up too in the colder months . They are worth the wait though for the summer blooms . Thank you for your kind comment . Bless you too flower friend 🌸🙏
I have a Pistachio Hydrangea and it is very leggy. Can I cut it back so maybe it will come back healthier? It was planted between some daisies and they kind of crowded him out. I’m moving the daisies in the spring. Thank you!
Hey Juley 👋 I think Pistachio Hydrangeas do best when pruned back after they bloom in summer . If you cut then back now, you may end up cutting off next summers blooms . You can cut out the dead canes at any time of year though. These can be cut back down to the ground . I love the colors of this hydrangea . They are stunning !😊
I am here in Canada in Zone 3-4 and I am planning not to prune my hydrangeas at all. I will just do deadheading if at all. I am looking forward what the conse quence would be. Thank you for your advice based on your experience.
Hi Kelly, I’m from CT and have a beautiful lime light. I love getting smaller flowers but I’m afraid that I have too many skinny branches on my bush. Do I need to think it out or will it be fine if I let it go wild? (I’m also worried that it’s getting to big because it grows well over my 6ft fence! But I used to prune it heavy but found it still grew to the same size every year!!) What would you do?!?
I am un Union, NJ. I have one blue hydrangea that I never prune and it only makes one flower per year. I have another hydrangea that makes big white flowers I call the snowball bush but I only prune some branches that overhang the lawn but the wood looks real old and cracked up but it still is full of flowers.
Hi Carol, loved reading about your hydrangea ! You can cut out and dead canes from the white hydrangea or any of your hydrangeas at any time of the year . I made a few videos explaining why you may not be getting blooms from the other hydrangeas here are some links below . I purchase what they call a limelight hydrangea and it's been planted in my yard for about three maybe four years now the blooms are not real big but they come back on old wood
I love the Limelight hydrangea . It’s so nice not having to worry about pruning off the flowers in late winter since they come in during the spring . A real winner for the garden. Thank you for sharing 🌸
Thank you for the advice about the hydrangeas. I’m from Saint Joseph, Michigan and we are zone 5-6. I’m close to the lake, so I think more zone 6 like you are. I’m a new subscriber and I love your dog, Lucy!
Super hydrangea question Kim . 👏👏👏 It's a good idea to put down a layer of mulch to protect the roots from the cold . If you live in a cold climate you may want to cover the hydrangea on super cold nights with burlap wrapped loosele around it or surround the hydrangea with chicken wire and then fill with leave .
Hi Joanne , that is a beautiful hydrangea . I made a few videos explaining different reasons hydrangea have trouble blooming . Here is the link . I'm in zone 5 in Vermont and I enjoy your info about Hydrangeas !! I have many different kinds but I get good foliage but not many blooms ??? most of them are in sun and I have high PH soil and some I use acid fertilizer but from my understanding that only does color ?? why no blooms hmmmm
Love your doggie. First time viewing, loved your no nonsense approach, not over whelming me with so much info I can’t understand anything. Old wood on this type new wood on this type ie.
GREAT VIDEO .I have my very first 3 blue Cassell hydrangeas still on the planters & not blooming as yet. Any suggestions / solutions to make them BLOOM. Thank you. GOD BLESS!
Hi Kelly, Thanks for all the info. I live in Toronto Ontario Canada. I have 8 big Endless Summer Hydrangea. It is now beginning of December and the leaves are soggy now. Can they be cut off now so there is not a big mess in the spring. It is always so hard to clean the leaves that have fallen into all the stems in the spring. ? Thanks for your advice.
Thank you! You are teaching me just in time! A couple questions/thoughts. As a rose gardener we are taught to get rid of ugly canes/branches/stems... Thank you for showing the current state of your bushes, I see that the discoloration on the leaves in normal and not something that needs to be pruned out! Questions 1) I have a limelight with big old blossoms that in January, kinda get full of snow & ice and can crack the whole cane with the weight of it, would you suggest deadheading these to prevent that? 2) In the spring do you deadhead the old dry flower heads or do they just fall apart? 3) I have to move my endless summer, would you suggest moving it after the first frost or wait till spring? I appreciate your time and wisdom! Thanks sooo much!
Hi Pamela , thank you for your great hydrangea question ! 👏 I would definitely dead head the Limelight Hydrangeas and for that matter most of your other Hydrangeas . I am a big fan of deadheading I made a video exposing best hydrangea deadheading practices. I’ll put a link to that below . The only blooms I may leave alone for the winter are the ones on my Endless Summer Hydrangeas and Nikkos. Some flower tribe members have suggested that keeping these in place may protect the newer buds that are put in place in fall on the old wood . WHY YOU SHOULD DEADHEAD YOUR HYDRANGEAS ➡️ ua-cam.com/video/yGdyKr4ITgw/v-deo.html Most resources I found online say Spring and fall are fine for planting hydrangea bushes; most sources I found recommend waiting for cooler weather and transplanting the bushes in late fall while the plants are dormant but the soil is workable.
To answer your question about deadheading the spent hydrangea blooms in spring ... you can deadhead them but if you can’t reach them, they will eventually fall apart and the new blooms will cover what left . 🌸😊

Thank you! Atlanta here. Love our huge limelights, won’t touch. Their roots creeped through a tiny hole from a tiny cracked planter. Will not try to break it apart. They get full full sun. I’ve covered couple branches w dirt and have made several new plantings.
Hi Penny , I love that you made new plantings from your hydrangea . I will try to make videos on this . Thank you for the video inspiration 🌸👍😊

Glad to help. Make sure your pot is large enough and that it has great drainage holes . Good luck on getting awesome blooms this year 😊🌸

Greetings from Montreal Canada. I never cut my hydrangeas. I have several varieties. In the spring I simply trim the dry flower heads. They are my favorites in my fall garden.

I absolute loved your video on pruning hydrangeas! Better yet, having "permission" to just not prune at all!!

Just moved to South Carolina. I finally can grow hydrangeas. There r several already on my property but I don’t know what kind
Congratulations on the new move . Here is a video I made showing some of the Hydrangea varieties we grow here . Hope you find them helpful

From Northwest Indiana. I was wondering why my limelight’s were HUUUGE this year. It’s bc I pruned to 1/3 size for the first time since we planted (4.5 years). I will
Leave them
Alone for another few years but wow I had to prune- they were so big and wide I couldn’t walk through my garage door without fighting the limelight’s :)
Thank you for the information.

Then in spring , take a look at where the new growth buds are forming on the stem and decide which stems and flower you can live without and trim those back a little more 🌸
@@KellyLehman thank you for your response. 🥰
In pensacola fl I will not prune my limelite only the second season and had few blooms so I’m hoping for stronger stems by not pruning... thanks great info!!
Good plan Judy. You could give them a deadheading if you like just below the spent bloom to keep the heaviness off the plant . 🌸😊

My Endless Summer Hydrangea has no flowers for all these years, it had very nice foliage but just having no flowers. I did put fertilizer on it.

I am looking forward what the conse

Just planted an endless summer hydrangea in spring, should I cover to protect from winter weather.

WHY YOU SHOULD DEADHEAD YOUR HYDRANGEAS
➡️ ua-cam.com/video/yGdyKr4ITgw/v-deo.html
Most resources I found online say
Spring and fall are fine for planting hydrangea bushes; most sources I found recommend waiting for cooler weather and transplanting the bushes in late fall while the plants are dormant but the soil is workable.
To answer your question about deadheading the spent hydrangea blooms in spring ... you can deadhead them but if you can’t reach them, they will eventually fall apart and the new blooms will cover what left . 🌸😊
Kelly Lehman thanks sooo much! This is so helpful and fun!
