Television censors amuse me. They would not let Sklyar Astin use the word "breasts" or "apples," but two dozen uses of the word "bitch" were just fine.
Among other inexplicably taboo phrases like "hand", "silver magic", "aim at the wall"...amazing how easily the cheeky and unsubtle can become vulgar to the eyes and ears of national TV censors
went to see the london previews of this couple of weeks ago. it was everything i imagined it wud be. the emotion and entrapment of the scenes are incredible. this will run for years. the young cast are very talented and full of energy
Excellent tune. So great to see musicals ain't in decline yet and fantastic new works keep coming up. You guys in America are so damn lucky. I'll have to fly 6000 miles before I can see a Broadway show.
WahwahWAIT...when did the lyrics to "The Bitch of Living" change??? And since when does Melchior sing that early in the song? WHEN DID ALL THE LYRICS CHANGE??
yeah that's what i meant when i said it was running out of money...b/c people aren't seeing the show, they can't pay their actors, stagehands, bills for the theatre space...therefore, the shows run out of money...and it sucks...i hate it. rock of ages and shrek at the tonys had me in tears because of how bad broadway has become. At least we now have Next to Normal!
im going there to see in in september, possibly before, but also when it hits Denmark this spring. This is an amazing new musical, a new genre in the genre if you get what im saying
we can't be for sure anything is ending for good. les mis came back for a little remember? but i just checked and spring awakening's last performance is in january 2009
That's how it is. Wendla (the girl with the white dress) still has a mic, but you cant see it. When she is done singing Mama Who Bore Me, one of the girls, (Anna), hands her a mic to join in on the reprise of Mama. I guess it's a way of telling Wendla to join in or something like that.
You can hear they bleeped themselves out. They don't say anything after "totally" or "sorry", so they would escape the censors. I also like the other clean lyrics like "Give me those bad dreams and the itch you can't control" or "Build some silver castles, shut the door and climb the walls".
Killer Kitty Kisses ik im 9 years late ahah, basically they had to censor the lyrics- and the wanted to let jonathan sing bc they werent doing enough of the song to give him his solo bit :)
aww its closin I sooo wanted to go see they say its RENT but for our generation(loved rent) an I love these songs my brother got me into this musical this sucks. hope they put it out their preformance on dvd like sweeny todd on broadway(the old one)
@Commulism You are my new best friend, LOL. Censorship because one person doesn't agree with something means we should censor everything, because chances are if you can like or hate it, at least one person will hate it.
Can someone answer this question? On the cd 'Mamma who bore me' begins with a string intro but on all the live recordings I've seen the song has only a guitar intro of two bars. Why is this? Did they ad the intro especially for the cd?
i know! i feel the same way!!! it is terrible!!! i hate seeing shows like this and rent close...it's such a sad thing to see the lights go off at a theatre!
they did it so that jg would have solo since he's the lead! he wouldn't normally have a solo in any of the parts of the numbers that they did here. i agree that jgj was more nervous than breath problems.
Does anyone know the girl with the bobbed hair cuts name? :O my friend and I adore her but we don't know her name xD and fill kinda silly that we dont know :P
You're right on that one, but it's also still touring. I just think it's terrible that things like Legally Blonde and Shrek the Musical are considered to be legitimate musical theater.
I was giving an example of what has happened in the past & what will most likely happen. If Hollywood could portray the show well casting the right ppl, & not getting caught up trying 2 make the show into something its not then by all means make a movie, but looking @ what happens in the past thats probably not going to happen. And even if it did the public would get all upset over the "taboo" subjects that the show includes & then ppl would be discouraged from seeing it anyway
That character is Ilse, she was kicked out of her house and whent to live with an artists colony so she's a little more free than the other characters. So her exagerated movements are just a refelction of the life she lives. The other girls live in a more conservative world so they're a little more restrained.
Ok...please don't hate me, but I can't help but feel the girl in light green and high boots with pigtails is overdoing it. She seems to be exaggerating her movements and expressions beyond what's necessary. Again, please don't hate me *blush* I just feel that way. Everyone else is AWESOME
hate to break it to u but this show has closed along with most others...it sucks i know! rent close last september and most broadway shows have run out of money (like spring awakening) and have since closed...they were replaced by shows that make me want to cry! it really stinks
i dont think i get what ur saying... spring awakening got a chance and it closed because of the recession and ticket sales... and while im praying for another run once broadway and the economy get their act together I dont see how the show wasnt given a chance. And while its true a film would make the show more widely known, would that really be good for the integrity of the show? for example I didn't mind the twilight series until the infinate #s of little fangirls appeared
it's so great to find out that beautiful broadway shows aren't overshadowed by brats that prefer justin bieber, someone that in no way has made someone cry or laugh. who has in no way inspired anyone
That just goes to show how screwed up the business of Broadway is these days. A musical that won the Tony for best musical last year can't even make enough money to stay on Broadway, but stuff like Legally Blonde can.
Thanks to the new Draconian FFC rules under the Bush Crime Family, CBS would be fined $335,000 for each instance the cast sang "Fuck" during the Tony telecast. That was the Bushevik's reaction to Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. That's why the cast had to self-censor. Nice to see we've progressed from Germany in the 1800s. :-)
I'm sorry. You must forgive me. I was having a fight with a friend when I replied. The answer to your question is no he is not crazy, just seriously disturbed.
Haha... I thought the censoring was kind of funny. But it certainly didn't help the performance. And the cameraman was being too cheesy. During "Totally Fucked" it would've been better to just have a still camera so we could see the choreography better. There was a lot going on, but it wasn't showcased well because the camera kept on panning in and out at random. I love this show though.
CONTINUED: and now I can't stand even the first book which I initially didn't have any issues with. And yes not all producers will make the mistakes they made on 90210, but if you look at previous broadway shows that were made into movie-musicals (chicago, mama mia! for example) what most often happens is that a ton of big-name actors are brought in who sometimes really arent meant to be singers (need i remind you of Pierce Brosnan) and make a previously great piece of music laughable
uh... no.... hollywood would completely kill it just look at what 90210 did they mispronounced the names throughout the entire show and completely killed the songs with their "singing" plus spring awakening is just not the kinda musical that could be made easily into a musical it would just end up being weird and completely different from the broadway show
On 2:55... That girl with the black hair and strait across bangs, with the really green dress.. I've seen her play another part in some videos, and she's realy not as good as the other one.
Everyone John Gallagher Jr. Had just won a tony award so he was still riding on a natural high
The giggle when John started singing IM SCREAMING
the energy of this performance is just SO GOOD.
Lea is AMAZING. I am blown away by her. These are my three favorite songs...what a great show.
the censorship is freaking hilarious
I love that they can say "ITS THE BITCH OF LIVING!", but cant say "kiss your sorry ass goodbye" or "and her breast....them apples fall" LOL!
i love how there are comments from before 2010
Anyone notice that the blackboard in the background says "Bitch" in all caps? I found this amusing. XP
Take that, FCC!
went to see the london previews of this couple of weeks ago. it was everything i imagined it wud be. the emotion and entrapment of the scenes are incredible. this will run for years. the young cast are very talented and full of energy
Excellent tune. So great to see musicals ain't in decline yet and fantastic new works keep coming up. You guys in America are so damn lucky. I'll have to fly 6000 miles before I can see a Broadway show.
these girls are power houses!
I saw it on Broadway during Christmas. It was an awesome show. Highly recommend it.
Had such a good time doing this play!
heaven must sound like this
leah looked so damn good here
Finally I get to see Moritz singing Totally Fucked.. I'm not crying...
i love this wish i cud have seen it..... i love the guy who plays Moritz, he's such a good actor
WahwahWAIT...when did the lyrics to "The Bitch of Living" change??? And since when does Melchior sing that early in the song?
WHEN DID ALL THE LYRICS CHANGE??
The woman at the piano is getting down.
favorite musical ever!
Thumbs up if 0:00-0:40 looked like a Rachel Berry Dream Sequence on glee
1:45
what an amazing smile
the way the time stamps didn’t turn blue 11 years ago 😀
The girl in the purple dress in "Totally Fucked" at 3:13 is Jennifer Damiano. She goes to my school.
it's supposed to be symbolic of them "shedding" they're child like innocence and ignorance. this is the turning point in the show....i believe
I still Stan her
yeah that's what i meant when i said it was running out of money...b/c people aren't seeing the show, they can't pay their actors, stagehands, bills for the theatre space...therefore, the shows run out of money...and it sucks...i hate it. rock of ages and shrek at the tonys had me in tears because of how bad broadway has become. At least we now have Next to Normal!
Hahaha if only you knew what was to come...
Gabrielle Lutz honestly
TOTALLY -----!
it's in LA right now. I saw it and it was superb.
i saw it and it was amazing a little confusing at times for me but great performance and their synchronization...the best!
sad dey have to leave.
no he wasn't, he just won a tony! he was excited and happy!
because groff's part was cut out. I don't think JGJ was sick, maybe just a little nervous
im going there to see in in september, possibly before, but also when it hits Denmark this spring. This is an amazing new musical, a new genre in the genre if you get what im saying
so effing amazing
Still love how Sandy cheeks is in this cast, Lilli is just amazing 😂💕
This is realy amasing. :)
xx
yes during the Tonys the actors ranged from 15-24. the majority are teens but the leads were 20,22, and 23. Lea, the female lead, is now 21 though.
i so wanted to watch this musical but i never got the chance!
we can't be for sure anything is ending for good. les mis came back for a little remember? but i just checked and spring awakening's last performance is in january 2009
COMING TO LONDON!
That's how it is. Wendla (the girl with the white dress) still has a mic, but you cant see it. When she is done singing Mama Who Bore Me, one of the girls, (Anna), hands her a mic to join in on the reprise of Mama. I guess it's a way of telling Wendla to join in or something like that.
hey erikzlair, good luck with the audition. i want to audition for wendla one day too. ;)

The bowdlerized lyrics are hilariously jarring.
that would be Melchior my friend.
played by Jonathan Groff if im not mistaken
i know its so sad but the tour is my only chance to see it
aww its closin I sooo wanted to go see they say its RENT but for our generation(loved rent) an I love these songs my brother got me into this musical this sucks. hope they put it out their preformance on dvd like sweeny todd on broadway(the old one)
Oh dear. This show and most others have closed?! What's happening to my beloved New York *scream* :)
was this performance before or after they had already won the Tony?
Ive never seen anything like this before.. Its actually really cool... hah
@Commulism You are my new best friend, LOL. Censorship because one person doesn't agree with something means we should censor everything, because chances are if you can like or hate it, at least one person will hate it.

The first two guys sound so similar.
Why is this closing in the West End?! It just opened! WHYYYYYYYYYY!
@JGroffFan HAHA! That almost made me choke on my toast and jam!
@Commulism I'm confused are you saying you're for or against the concept of censoring?
Wow, they really had to slaughter "Bitch of Living," didn't they. "Give me those BAD DREAMS," etc.
I was giving an example of what has happened in the past & what will most likely happen. If Hollywood could portray the show well casting the right ppl, & not getting caught up trying 2 make the show into something its not then by all means make a movie, but looking @ what happens in the past thats probably not going to happen. why isn't the audio matching up with the video?
Not the character name, her real one, she's in the yellow and brown dress and comes in at Totally Fucked
What's the name of the third song they sing?
i actually like this "other tony version" looool of bitch of living, just sounded so...idk, jus so good.
same he's so cute =]
i love 1:43!!!! he is so adorable
before, best musical is normally last.
who is the guy in the middle chair?
That character is Ilse, she was kicked out of her house and whent to live with an artists colony so she's a little more free than the other characters. So her exagerated movements are just a refelction of the life she lives. The other girls live in a more conservative world so they're a little more restrained.
@thatsnotmynamedancer cause the original words were too inappropriate to show on TV
Ok...please don't hate me, but I can't help but feel the girl in light green and high boots with pigtails is overdoing it. She seems to be exaggerating her movements and expressions beyond what's necessary. Again, please don't hate me *blush* I just feel that way. Everyone else is AWESOME
Legally Blonde is also on a national tour.
hate to break it to u but this show has closed along with most others...it sucks i know! rent close last september and most broadway shows have run out of money (like spring awakening) and have since closed...they were replaced by shows that make me want to cry! it really stinks

skylar is too cute. :3
it's so great to find out that beautiful broadway shows aren't overshadowed by brats that prefer justin bieber, someone that in no way has made someone cry or laugh. who has in no way inspired anyone
why did they change all of the goddamn words?????
they look like teens! (are they?)
Actually Bananachica Legally blonde closed in Oct so you might want to get your broadway facts straight.
That's Krysta Rodriguez.
well when you think about it also,
have you ever watched Animal Planet?
its not considerd that bad.
they say bitch all the time.
that was awesome but the changed some of bitch of living and cut out *fucked* so it sounded weird
*spring awakening isnt the kinda musical that could be made easily into a movie
I'm sorry. You must forgive me. I was having a fight with a friend when I replied. The answer to your question is no he is not crazy, just seriously disturbed.
Haha... I thought the censoring was kind of funny. But it certainly didn't help the performance. And the cameraman was being too cheesy. are you serious?!
i understand why they had to change somethings in the songs, for tv.. but why is The Bitch of Living's opening changed?? the one they used here sucks

I always wonder why when they sing totaly fucked they look like they're screaming it, not singing it.
No, but I think you are.
uh... no.... hollywood would completely kill it just look at what 90210 did they mispronounced the names throughout the entire show and completely killed the songs with their "singing" plus spring awakening is just not the kinda musical that could be made easily into a musical it would just end up being weird and completely different from the broadway show
wow. aren't they supposed to be in HS?
On 2:55... That girl with the black hair and strait across bangs, with the really green dress.. I've seen her play another part in some videos, and she's realy not as good as the other one.
that's the only thing i didn't like. they changed so much.
Totally _____? They could've tried a little harder at that. But this is cool otherwise.
