Im from new Plymouth, it is great place to visit. Going up the mountian is a great view. If you want snow is best to go there mid winter like may or june. But watch for black ice on roads its very slippery.

Funny you mention that. Mount Taranaki was used as a replacement fuji backdrop in The Last Samurai movie. Kinda makes me wonder why they didn't just go to japan and shoot the film there. The prices of housing in town went up because of that film being shot here in New Plymouth. It wasn't even that great a film imo.
