- The Trawlerman's Song by Mark Knopfler. For David. To a boy who's 47! How about that. Most Birthday cards have boats and this is no exception. A lot of cards don't however have old men smoking and so this is a bit different and also there is no $5 note. Nice of Bob Franklin to "photo bomb" the clip near the end...not intentional on my part. I think it's a song about life...I had never heard it before. Time in dock isn't always long enough. Have to be ready even though you are not ready. Plenty of rocks and dark nights. One lighthouse. Jesus, The Light of the World. "The Trawlerman"Song"...no one on the internet knows what the exact meaning is behind the lyrics. Perhaps the man is trawling for small treasures in his everyday life with his broken nets and worn out leaking boat. Grasping for the simple things, tiny things and like a little fellow thinking his pebble is the best treasure he has ever found before he puts it on his bedhead. Now I have spoilt the song probably by my cold analysis but trying to marry pictures with lyrics is part of clip making and after listening to the song well over 80 times in the creating of the clip I suppose I am able to have a stab...but maybe Mark Knopfler just likes fishing? Oh Gerry you are terrible!
Anyway better go. Sale of the Century is starting and my meat pie is getting cold. I like a nice meat pie. Enyoy! Hoping you don't have to go swimming lessons today. x

Such a beautiful song. Having grown up in a small fishing community, this song brings back memories of watching the boats leaving every year, and makes me cry every time I hear it for those who didn't come back. Beautiful and bittersweet.
I’m sure fishing boats left more than ‘every year’. Probably every few weeks would be more likely.
I just don’t know how M.K. does it! He has a gift for creating pictures in my mind that are all set to beautiful melodies.

Thank you...I made this clip for my brother. Funny enough...when I asked him if there was a song he would like me to fiddle around with for his birthday he said The Trawlerman's Song. I replied I never heard of it even though I knew most of Mark's songs. Took a bit to get my head around what it was possibly saying in the lyrics. Thanks again.

Just been sitting with a cup of my wife's herbal night time tea ...something I never do and sitting on the floor with a bible opened...something I used to do better! I know God understands but wish it wasn't so tiring and anxious. Need to slow things down somehow and make time or build time to rest and do nothing without feeling guilt or pressure ...Take care

This sounds like the type of song I would imagine Ian Tyson covering. Ian has been a major fan of Mark’s for years, and Mark has been a major influence on his songwriting. However; Ian has died recently from health complications and therefore would be unable to record or perform any longer. If Ian were still alive, and were to sing one of Mark’s songs, it would probably be “The Trawlerman’s Song”.
