Tesla just pulled this option, replaced with a long range rwd with 320mi range, $31,490, 6.5sec
Your series of videos on the 2024 Model Y RWD Standard Range sold me on getting one. Especially the charging curve and 70 mph range test. I traded in a 2022 Bolt EV. The Bolt was great for around town and day trips (300-400 miles). I am loving the Model Y. Charging is amazing, build quality is great (no issues at delivery or in the 2 weeks I've owned it so far), the base sound system is good, controls took about 2 days to get used to (I use everything without thinking about it now), acceleration is great (about the same as the Bolt but without torque steer and has better acceleration at highway speeds), ride comfort is better as is cabin noise, and all the other standard features are wonderful. Thanks again for the very, very helpful videos. I'm looking forward to the "range boost" upgrade if it comes out. Would like to see what the charging curve is on a 2024 MY RWD LR as compared to the SR.
Hey Branden, thanks for the excellent non published statistics. I really enjoy your honest videos.
Regards, Lindsay 🔋
Great video, I’m so close to upgrading my 2023 Chevy Bolt to the rear wheel drive model Y, you’re a great salesman….lol 😅
You’ll love it
I love my 4680 Austin made AWD, had it for exactly 1 year and drove 14,000 miles, no issues whatsoever.
Me too. Great quality. No rattles, bettet solid ride. And so far 0.1% degradation after 10k miles. And the extra 9 minutes for me are meaningless due to have much we stop for bathroom breaks
Me too (well, 11 mo, 7k mi). Only road trip once a year (DC to SWFL) and the 4680 MY is night-and-day superior at it than our Polestar - we basically just supercharge at OUR convenience. Home charging, around town driving and family (including dog) road tripping have all been spectacular.
We bought a RWD MY last month. I’d been wondering why we didn’t get the LFP battery. Thanks for the explanation. Also, good to know that it’s a software limited full size pack. That means charging to 100% occasionally shouldn’t be as detrimental to battery life. You absolutely right, by the way, Tesla does a terrible job communicating all these differences.
It's by design. Don't ask; don't tell.
@@craighermle7727The need a couple standard mandate tests to measure charge time and publish like the eMPG numbers on the Mulroney.
Thank you for making these videos so everyone knows what the trim levels can and can’t do. Do you regret getting your Model Y? If you could trade it for anything in a relatively similar price range what would you trade it for?
I don’t regret things, but I do wish I had gotten a LR. Then again, no one would know how bad the 4680 are if it wasn’t for my content.
@@brandenflaschyou really have done a great job with these videos. I just wish it had worked out differently for you. That is a real bummer that the 4680 batteries really aren’t as good as they were said to be.
Hopefully they buy it back.
I'm here in Canada with my Model Y RWD with LFP battery. I could never need more range or charging speed. Also, the front motor can never fail because it's not there.
I agree with Brandon and prefer slower acceleration with fast charging as in rear wheel m3. Wish my mS refresh added miles as fast as this m3.
I have a MY 4680 that I bought last year. I do like the 5 secs 0-60 performance and another reason I liked it was the Giga-casting. Figured it would hold up better long term. I mainly drive to work and back with it and charge at home and we usually take our ICE SUV on trips and the weekends. The few times I used a supercharger I have noticed the drop in speed. Wish it could be faster, but since I don’t depend on supercharging often I guess not a huge deal.
Well done video. Question: since the RWD is software limited to 85% of the battery pack, can the car be regularly charged to a higher state of charge without affecting long term battery health?
Yes
@@brandenflasch As in 95-100%? What does the RWD car software set as the limit?
@gao57009 yes, 100% is actually 85%. The car still suggests a daily charging of 80% (which is easier than 100% even though 100% is 85% actual)
SR MY was also not up to qElmos specs. while its served its purpose, definitely will be selling when warranty expires.
Gor it. Thanks!
Did I miss the link to the full charging curves?
The 4680 experience Tesla put its customers through is the main reason why I skipped over MY and went somewhere else. I do not give it a second thought at all. I am happy with my choice.
What did you get?
Also curious
I’ve got one of the RWD and you have confirmed everything I thought. I am also assuming degradation is also going to be much better on these due to software locking as well, right?
As some degradation will be on stuff we don’t even have access to and so no impact.
That’s correct
Good info. Question, since the software is limiting the use to 80-85% of the pack, do they recommend “100%” charging or still the 80% for LR?
They still recommend 80% but it’s pretty silly
@c3po Don’t take Branden’s advice on charging recommendations over Tesla’s advice. He is making assumptions and establishing himself as a more reliable source than Tesla, despite not being a part of the R&D of this vehicle or battery. Doesn’t hurt him to give out bad info, but it can hurt you. If you have an issue with your battery down the road and Tesla sees you regularly charged it to 100% they can point the finger at you for the trouble. This is entertaining to watch and I can appreciate Branden’s perspective, but you can’t rely on technical advice over the manufacturer. A bunch of the OOS community including this channel reported that the RWD MY had an LFP Battery. Even after launch. 6 months later Branden mentions the battery is not an LFP battery. Once call to Tesla confirmed it was not. No shade towards the channel, but watcher beware. This is more for entertainment, opinion, and perspective. If you choose to sue the channel down the road forgiving bad advice, the defense would be, I’m just a UA-camr making entertainment content. (Branden, it would be a good idea to disclaim your claims. Be confident, but let people know to not rely purely on your opinion and analysis for their buying decisions- and especially to not rely on your advice that goes contrary to Tesla’s guidance on best practices.)
@DanJQuinones I verified with CAN data that it is a software limited pack. RWD is LFP in other markets
@@DanJQue7 No need to discuss lawsuits against Branden. That's just silly.
The MY RWD that you were driving have the same sound system as the AWD or does it have less speakers?
Less speakers
Hi Branden, What kind of battery does the 2024 Model Y LR RWD also have? (in the US)
LR 2170 pack
Are you able to do the Performance boost upgrade on that?
No RWD car can get it
What’s the deal with the MY 4680 batteries? Have they been problematic? I haven’t heard the story.
So the 170kW is also software locked and it could even charge faster because it is a regular 79/82kWh pack wich can do the 250kW and more
That’s correct
I'd thought you've sell your 4680 model y
Would you recommend charging this car to 100% since it is software limited or still keep it 80-90% for daily use?
Keeping it lower SoC is still better for it, but 100% indicated is not really 100%.
I bought a 4680 Model Y last March. It was not too long after that when your videos came out showing how bad it really was with regards to charging (I already knew because I road trip a lot). Man I wish I knew that before buying it. I hated that car because of that charging performance. One day I had to do 1000 miles in a day and it sucked. Had to ride the bottom of the charging curve all day to get reasonable charging speeds. I couldn't even make it a year with that car and traded it in (at a fair loss, no less) for an R1S and couldn't be happier. Nearly double the price but absolutely worth it. My second car is a leased Leaf and I might consider one of these RWD Y's if the used prices are right when the lease is up.
I’d like to get out of mine if I can
I believe the RWD in Canada is now the same as the US RWD. They're built in Fremont atleast.
Fremont with LFP to my knowledge
All Tesla's are worth buying verses the other brands
No.
Worth buying is very subjective. Personally I'd say the SR 4680 Model Y, for me, is the only Tesla that's not a strong competitor. Others may differ. Some people will only buy a Tesla. Some people won't buy one at all for various reasons.
Just to be clear Branden the US 2024 MY Dual Motor AWD is not a 4680 battery correct? Its the Panasonic 2170. You might have said this but I missed it.
Correct
Thanks Branden. @@brandenflasch
My son just bought a 2024 RWD model Y two days ago in Atlanta Ga. He got conflicting info on charging, can he charge to 100% without concerns of battery health? Thanks.
Yes
@Bruce ask Tesla not a UA-camr lol. Branden the best answer meet be probably, but a definitive yes is reckless- especially when someone might rely on your advice. You’ve been wrong about this car before (LFP batt). This is too big a purchase and too unknown a vehicle to give out definitive advice on its most important component. Especially when that advice contradicts the manufacturer’s.
At that time everything indicated it would be LFP like Canadian market.
5:10 - I with this was true. Seems to be quite a lot of lingering V2 supercharging infrastructure in west TX, all of NM, much of AZ. I had to reroute twice on my trip from home to Brownsville, TX (to watch Starship launch) due to not being able to make it for Lubbock,TX to Cloves,NM, even at 100% SOC and then again in SW TX because of supercharger overcrowding. Happened again on my recent trip to Tucson, AZ where there was. 15+ car deep wait at a V2 location where 3/8 stalls were significantly underperforming. Took hours. 🙄 Oh, I know, let’s disband the entire supercharger team…seems like a great idea. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Does the 2024 MY Short range rear wheel drive have the 2170 battery?
In the US, yes
@@brandenflaschappreciate it
What battery and cells do the Canadian 2024 model y RWD get? They are fremont builds now and not from China anymore
LFP
@@brandenflaschwould you happen to know if they’re BYD or CATL?
@@camel3333 CATL to my knowledge
I’m not sure why your Model Y takes so long to charge. Just drove my 2024 Model Y LR DM across Colorado. We did 20-80% exactly in 27 minutes. 🤷🏻♂️ This also aligns with what I have heard from others. Perhaps your battery wasn’t warm or the charger was limited? I also did the exact same speed again this week, so it wasn’t a one off.
Because 4680 sucks.
@@brandenflasch ohhhh I missed that you have 4680. 🤪
So just need Electric Garage to unlock that top 15%
Im curious if they will let us pay to unlock more range on the RWD
Just hack it and save money 😂

Damn let’s go!!! What are your thoughts on the price? It seems totally worth it imo
@davide2268 do it!
I hope others can roll it into the lease or loan 🙏 to make this more affordable to everyone.
Do the 4680 woes apply to the 23 MY LR AWD? I’ve noticed it’s charged well on ours bought in December.
By the way I’m also in Charlotte. Happy to meet up and do some testing if you’d like!
LR doesnt use 4680. so no....
Nope, LR doesn’t use 4680. Shoot me an email or Twitter message - I’d like to do some testing (email on channel)
Thank you both!
My M3 is a lemon.
