I've built my own bog filter like this, but instead of using stones, I've used pot scrubbers in media bags, so if you did need to remove them for whatever reason its quick. The pot scrubbers don't easily clog up and have more surface area than K1 media per inch squared. Back washing is so easy squashing them with a large tamper. I have a plastic crate at the bottom to create a void. There must be about 500+ pot scrubbers in there from memory in a 210 litre barrel, so very good surface area.
I’m so excited, because of Ozponds I’ve started my pond. I’ve got almost everything I need now and the fun can start. I appreciate these videos SO MUCH❤. Without these videos o could never do it myself. And bonus, Kev has the most soothing voice ever. Thank you thank you
Have my own bog running on just a little 500 gallon above ground wildlife pond designed from watching your videos and the pond is beautiful. Also here watching this video as I can't get enough of videos, keep up the great work
I put in a bog filter a few months ago for my small pond. It's gone from a filamentous algae nightmare to beautifully clean. Just enough algae now for the tadpoles. Thanks for the idea and design tips.
I implemented this type of filter thanks to Ozponds running through the freezing winter, and my water cleaned up after about a month and never looked better. The cleanout valve at the bottom is great. We're already halfway through winter, and I wrapped a heat regulation wire around the barrel and pipes, and I haven't had a problem with cracking yet. One major problem is getting clogged detritus or algae in the barrel that end up forcing the water up through the breather pipe, and no longer filters up through the rocks. I think there are two causes for this: 1. I implemented this style of bog filter without really cleaning up the pond or doing a legit water change and cleaning up sludge at the bottom. 2. I haven't done the rinsing Ozponds recommends once in a while with the flushout valve open. What I love about this setup, is that I can hook up a hose to the flushout and fertilize my flower garden
I have two filters, one is a shower filter filled with stones of different sizes, while the other is like yours in the video, with large and small stones, the upper part is sand
Spoke to you recently about algae in the pond. Thanks for the info. I’ve been coolecting excess and am adding an aerator to see if that helps. However that’s not the question. My darling wants a bigger tank area for Mr Cod and has decided an ICB container would be ideal. However I have concerns. 1.Brand new is too expensive but 2 nd hand have been used for chemicals. Can they be cleaned out with detergents or some other product to ensure that it is safe? 2. Other people who keep cod reckons bog filter doesn’t reduce enough bio load and uses a bio medium in a 200 l drum set up . Would this be right? I thought a bog filter was a natural way to clean water.? 3 if I go bog filter what size would I need and what turn over per hour of water Hopefully not to long winded but would appreciate advice before digging a huge whole in my garden area
1. I would only use an ibc that I knew had something safe in it. 2. A bog filter is awesome! 3. Bog filter at 20-25% pond, that’s what I’d go. Pump size 6x filter size. I see you bought the pdf so it’ll have all this info 👍. If I were keeping a cod I’d go even bigger than a 1000L pond, they are a big beautiful fish. Good luck with your setup.
Thanks I found that link. You’ve done a great job. Now to source all the components. When or if Mr Cod reaches a size too big for the tank I’ll either release it or eat it. Be a tough decision that I won’t have to make for a few years yet.
Hi Kev. A big question, that have been a stop for making a pond for me. Living in Denmark, we have frost in wintertime. Any good ideas for keeping bacteria alive in a bogfilter in a barrel with less water in, bc water expand when it freze. And can break the barrel. I can take some of the s ubstrat inside and feed it with auqarium water, but I am getting stucked there in the thought process. I love your videos. ❤😊
Hi Kev, I'm thnking about installing a pond with some goldfish in it. To keep the water clean, I didn't decide yet if I will go for a bog filter or a similar filter with 'bubble pumps' (Did you ever watched David Paganbutler his video's and his bubble pumps? it's very similar to a bog filter but the pumpsystem differs). Do you have any experience with these kind of filters? I like the bubble pumps very much because you don't have to bring electricity in the pond and apparently there much cheaper to run. The one thing that is holding me back is because Davis suggests that fish would eat the Daphnia in the water (kind of plankton) and they are very important to keep the water clear. If they do, than a pond with a bogfilter should have the same problem. I would like to hear your thoughts on this subject.
Both filters you are describing work exactly the same, only difference is the machine you use to move the water, as you said air pumps are more efficient money wise. The factor that determines how much the filter will clean is not the pump system neither the volume of water it moves, it is the surface volume you have for beneficial bacteria.
Hey Kev, First of all, nice videos with clear instructions. Good job and keep doing! Question: did you ever made 2 ponds that overfloods (connected) to the other pond? If not, how would you do it? Would be nice if you could also still swim in it (natural swimming pond). Could you made a video for that? Love to hear from you!
@ when I was consulting I helped someone do this, turned out great. Basically the principle is the same you just create one pond as the “bog pond” pump water from the main “swim pond” to the bog pond and round and round it goes. Like the bog filters on my dream pond are like ponds but water still moves up through the rock and pebble.
I love the underwater footage, it's all so pretty. Every time I try to film underwater I only get a few good shots, but the rest is too shadowy to see, or I've just got the camera aimed at nothing. lol It's hard to film underwater with a camera on the end of a selfie stick! I absolutely love your concrete stock trough pond.
I tend to stick the go pro in and leave it for about 10min. It’s always fun to look at the footage to see what I’ll see. The little native fish are harder to see from the top of the pond, somehow the birds still get them.
Great stuff Kev! I’m new to building a pond. I’m currently building one with a 9000L bog filter. This might be a very dumb question but here goes… can I put fish, of the same sex, in my bog filter? Greetings from 🇿🇦

I like building ponds without spending a fortune. Thank you for your help. Mine is slowly coming along.
Keep watching his videos to keep up your inspiration. Enjoy your pond
Slow and steady wins the race 👍
I’ve been using this type of filter for my 40 gallon pond for 3 years. It’s great. Highly recommended. ❤
Awesome 😊👍
Another great video, cheers Kev from Ireland ☘ 😁👍
Thanks mate 😊👍
Very informative easy to understand video

I agree A bunch of rock and sand really change my pond, its always crystal clear
Nice 👍

Crystal clear instructions. What kind of vlog-filter do you use? 😉 And you've levelled up on the illustrations, too! GJ. 🥳 🎉
I’m not sure what a vlog filter is. The underwater footage was the go pro.
@@Ozponds Just joking, bud. My lame attempt at word play. A vlog is a video log. Instructions were crystal clear, so...vlog filter? 🐸 👏
@ 🤣 gotcha
Great, could your inflow enter low as well as it only disperses at the bottom then perculates through?
I made a video 2 weeks ago about why I don’t do that 👍

It’s ok to shut it down over winter. There’s bacteria in your local area that is adapted.

I love David’s vids. There’s loads of ways to filter water, just find a system that ticks all your boxes and replicate it.

I think I’ve used up all my big pond budget (I need to stay married 😉).
@Ozponds could you explain how you would do it, whats the best way to do it?

@@nolanlister194 mixed. They breed up there.

That water looks safer to drink than my tap Kev!
The beauty of the bog filter 😉
