    Triumph actually specified a peak voltage of 15.3 on the charging circuit with the zener diode, which always seemed wrong to me, as you will cook a 12v lead/acid battery if you charge it at more than around 14.3v, so a proper regulator is the way to go.
    After several batteries went to an early grave over the years, running the standard system, I upgraded mine with a 3-phase stator, solid state reg/rect and AGM battery. Battery is still going strong after about 5 years, and indicators work at low revs around town, with the lights on, which they never used to on the original system.

      Triumph always seemed reluctant to update their electrical systems whereas the Japanese were moving well ahead of the times.
      15.3 is high, I’ve worked on various battery charging systems over the years and never had anything that high on 12 volt systems. I did see this one rise to 15.9 before I shut it off, I’d be interested to know what it got to when it cooked the battery.
      I have three phase on my T140 chop with solid state rec/reg and Li-Ion battery and it puts out a very stable voltage.

      Hey mate, just picked up a 76 Bonny and was wanting to do this small upgrade prior to burning out any batteries.
      Can you post a link of what where you picked up the new solid state stator?
      Also, can I get a picture possible from you, as to how the battery strap is mounted on the side and top of the battery.
      I didn't have one on top of my battery and am having a pain in the neck getting it mounted properly!

      @ChrisWilk I got my reg/rec from the Classic bike shop, was around £45 if I remember correctly. Look for LUCAS 12 VOLT RECTIFIER/ REGULATOR SINGLE PHASE.
      As for the battery strap mine just clips onto the hooks on the battery tray.

      It would but I haven’t got any of a suitable size.
      I’m considering sorting some of the wiring out over winter so may well make a new bracket for it and the ignition unit.

      @@bodganeering my Tympanium is bolted to the underneath of the battery tray. Might get better airflow if needed-but my VR isn't finned.

      @robthoreson8384 I’m going to be tidying up the wiring this winter so it may well move. I was considering where the zener diode is mounted as that is a massive chunk of aluminium and will easily wick any heat away.
      But the underside of the battery tray is also an option. 🧐😂

      @@bodganeering I’m curious to know if the Lucas needs a choke installed like a Podtronics (as they suggest) because of interference between Tri-spark/EI’s.

    My voltage regulator was bolted to the underside of the battery box. Neat and our of the way.

      I will be moving it this winter and sorting some of the wiring out, getting rid of some of those horrible blue through crimps… 😂

    Good, imformative vid. Some rubber between the regulator/rectifier ans battery tray may prolong the lifespan of ghe unit..... These Twins shake and vibrate,as you know! 👍

    I own and run a 1972 T120R and 6 years ago put it back on the road after it being garaged for about 9 years. I could not have done it without the help of a mate of mine John Plewes (Lunmad channel). by any chance did you know him or heard about him? good bloke, missed....

      @@bodganeeringI live in SE London and used to visit John on a regular basis. I would put the bike on a trailer and drive up there and stay. We would ride out over the moors and visit the odd pub or tea house. When he died both me and Johno formed the honour guard escorting the hearse at the funeral. Over 400 bikes turned out. the police had to close a road to provide overspill parking. Over 500 people were at the cremartoriom. Miss that bloke a lot. God I could share some stories but best not. Someone might be listening....

    If the VR is directly connected to the battery wouldn’t it always put a draw on it? Would it be better to have the battery side connected to the ignition power?

      It doesn’t draw any power, the diodes within the rectifier prevent that.
      If you connect it to the ignition side you run the risk of the engine running on when the ignition is off as the stator will power the ignition circuit.

    Did you notice a stronger spark at the plug, I'm scratching my head mine is so difficult to start at the moment

      Electronic never gives a decent spark but I would normally look at my carbs initially. Double check plug leads and spark gaps etc.

      I forgot to add, make sure your battery is fully charged, should be around 12.5 volts.

      Battery at 9.5v which is not ideal will charge and see if that helps
