Many sounds are wrong: Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 do not have startup sounds. Windows NT 5.0 startup sound is correct, but the shutdown sound is incorrect. The correct shutdown sound is the Windows NT 4.0 shutdown sound. Windows Whistler actually uses 2000 sounds. Windows Server 2003's startup sound is the same as Windows XP. Windows Longhorn actually uses XP sounds. Windows Server 2012, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2019 use the Vista/7 startup sound and they do not have shutdown sounds. Same with Windows Server 2022.
The Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server startup sounds are very close, but technically they use the sound you have listed as Windows Neptune (9:59). Nice video!
Honestly, the standard startup sounds of the main operating systems from 95 to XP (95, NT 4, 98, 2000/ME, XP) are pretty fantastic. The Brian Eno-composed Win95 sound is timeless and iconic - simple and reflective, announcing with grace the arrival of the biggest leap forward Windows ever had in 95. 98's meanwhile is this bright, beaming rush of sound, full of optimism. Both honestly beautiful in their own, very different ways. 2000/ME and XP's are along similar lines with one another, that sort of flowing piano-driven elegance; both great, and I'm very nostalgic for XP's sound given it was the operating system of my childhood. NT 4.0's is... very odd, given the rest of these. Spacey, dark, futuristic synth tones are not what I expect from a Windows startup but it has those, and it's honestly the single coolest sound of this bunch. Most of their accompanying shutdown sounds (All of them except 95) are pretty fantastic too, for similar reasons - being a nice complementary 'goodbye' to their 'hello'. And on 95; the 'tada!' wav file did make for a quite cheerful and honestly goofy (in a good way) sound for 3.1 etc. but it never struck me as shutdown sound at all, and doesn't pair with Eno's startup sound all that well either. The Vista/7 sound... is kinda neat. It's pretty and all but I never cared for it as much as XP's or any of the other ones mentioned before. I definitely have some nostalgia for it (I have a lot of fond memories of 7) but it's clearly not as good. Also the shutdown sound is so faint you can barely notice it, though I do think it's cute. I think I actually prefer Longhorn's startup and shutdown sounds to the ones they went with here - they have similar vibes but are bolder. I skipped over 8 and went to 10, and honestly didn't even know they still had startup sounds past this point, as they're disabled normally. I'm actually not someone that hates modern corporate aesthetics wholesale but this is one area that they've clearly downgraded on over the years, honestly. I get it; these newer and more subdued sounds (or no sound at all) fit the aesthetics of the operating system and the whole vibe around modern technology far more than any of the pre-Vista sounds, but just on their own they're clearly not as interesting. The fact we went from Brian Eno-composed sounds to no sound at all being the default speaks to this downgrade, I think.
I was born in 1995, so the only versions of Windows that are more nostalgic for me are XP, Vista and 7, since I grew up on those operating systems. Now I moved on to Linux and only use Windows for some games.
I remember sitting in my miserable cubicle in East Palo Alto at the start of my career in 99. I had to be there at 6 am. Full day of doing things I had no interested in doing. But at least I got to hear the Windows 98 startup sound as I sipped my coffee.
@@Albergarri788 windows server 2003 is not fake. It has the UK startup sound because its still by Windows XP if he should use the Windows XP U.S. startup sound
Grew up with Windows 98 and 2000. My Windows 8 Laptop in High School was the first to not play a sound at startup, and I was sad about that. Had no idea it even HAD a startup sound until I looked it up. Same with my windows 10 computer.
Error Lists so you know • Windows 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 do not consist any sounds, the first Windows program to involve sound is the Windows 3.0 MME system, therefore systems before Windows 3.0 MME do not have a startup nor a shutdown. • Windows Whistler earlier betas used the Windows 2000/ME sounds, the later builds have used most of the Windows XP sounds we know to this day. • Windows Server 2003 has only used Windows XP sounds, its startup sound is just like XPs. • Windows Longhorn used Windows XP sounds with its earlier builds, after that it used most Vista sounds. • Windows 8, 8.1, 10, Server 2016 and Server 2019 used Windows Vista/7 startup sounds. • There is no proof of Windows 10X using the Windows 10X startup reversed as the shutdown, it probably uses Windows Vista/7 sound for the shutdown.
you're not an expert if you don't even know what sounds different versions of Windows had. the first thing I noticed was that Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 didn't have startup sounds (they basically didn't have sounds), because Microsoft invented the sound file together with IBM in 1991 and he had an extension ".wav" (Wave). the second thing I noticed is Windows Whistler. his sound appeared from nowhere and was made in Audition by someone unknown (the reversed sound of turning off Windows 98, the sound from the Microsoft game, and the reversed sound of turning off Windows 2000 were combined). the shutdown sound was stolen from BeOS (I don't remember exactly from where). The Whistler itself had sound from Windows XP/2000. the third thing I noticed was Windows Longhorn. Its startup/shutdown sound was taken from Samsung theme for Windows XP/Vista. Longhorn itself used sounds from Windows XP. well, that seems to be it. I forgot to notice, the Windows Server 2003 startup sound was taken from the Windows Server 2003 promo video (which turned out to be a huge sadness for me as a child). Windows 8, 8.1 had the Windows 7 startup sound, and the sound you showed was the "Windows Logon" sound. the sound of Windows 10, 2016, 2019 and 2022, as well as Windows 8, 8.1, had a Windows 7 startup sound (in Windows Server 2022, the startup sound also had to be configured itself).

The Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server startup sounds are very close, but technically they use the sound you have listed as Windows Neptune (9:59). Nice video!
l like how Windows 10 laptops somehow still use Windows Vista starting sound.
Me too
13:27 remind me when I was in kindergarten or 2nd/3rd grade. I miss those D:
I remember first using a computer in 2013 when I was in first grade, I was obsessed over that sound
15:21 I liked this startup screen and it gave me nostalgia and made me remember what I was like in 2017 and 2018 and 2019
v
actually real nostalgia starts in win 3.1 and ends in windows 7
windows 95 is the first OS I experienced when I was young back in 96. it felt like a lifetime looking back.
Windows 3.0 was my 1st windows Desktop i've purchased, now many decades have been passed!!
The Windows Longhorn sounds are... TOO good. That feels just too good to just be for a computer OS. Incredible.
...Longhorn? Never heard of it.
@@alexdow1797 It was only a prototype for Vista.
uh
ok
They're fake
Windows 7 is full of nostalgia, I remember I used to ask if I can Start and shutdown the laptop just for the sound
I am using it.
2:07 it sounds like Bowser's beta voice in Mario 64
i think i used to have a windows 7 when i was SUPER young because that 2007 startup sound was just so nostalgic
Well said
14:18 I got emotional at citypace
I remember messing around with the theme settings and feel scared with the landscape one :')
I was born in 1995, so the only versions of Windows that are more nostalgic for me are XP, Vista and 7, since I grew up on those operating systems. Now I moved on to Linux and only use Windows for some games.
Having a startup jingle just makes me so much happier
Windows Longhorn Sounds are actually from Samsung
4:55 the last Hyderabad for Mumbais scary delay 11:45PM to 03:15AM
I have used windows os starting from Windows 95 till today. But Windows 2000 sound is very soothing.
The startup sounds before Windows 95 are the best ones, apart from the beta "longhorn" startup and end sounds.
8:39 This music will decrease your battery.
I remember sitting in my miserable cubicle in East Palo Alto at the start of my career in 99. I had to be there at 6 am. Full day of doing things I had no interested in doing. But at least I got to hear the Windows 98 startup sound as I sipped my coffee.
Longhorn sounds are fake, they were fanmade for a XP Royale Remixed theme pack.
Whistler is also fake.
@@atyssn windows server 2003 is also fake too
@@Albergarri788 windows server 2003 is not fake. It has the UK startup sound because its still by Windows XP if he should use the Windows XP U.S. startup sound
@HINSON LAU CHUNG HIN Moe yes your right
@HINSON LAU CHUNG HIN Moe Longhorn is a codename, same with Whistler. They are not fake. But the start up and shutdown sounds are fake.
12:06 I like this! :)
Lol I still have my mums old windows 7 and the startup sound is just so nostalgic. I will forever keep it as it has so many memories held within it
Grew up with Windows 98 and 2000. My Windows 8 Laptop in High School was the first to not play a sound at startup, and I was sad about that. Had no idea it even HAD a startup sound until I looked it up. Same with my windows 10 computer.
Error Lists so you know
• Windows 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 do not consist any sounds, the first Windows program to involve sound is the Windows 3.0 MME system, therefore systems before Windows 3.0 MME do not have a startup nor a shutdown.
Windows Vista was literally my CHILDHOOD!!! AH! So nostalgic!!
Fun Fact: Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 10X's shutdown sounds are the startup sounds but reversed
The Windows 10X sounds in this video are incorrect. The startup sound shown in this video is from the OOBE intro animation.

I wonder if someone made a music out of the Windows XP's Christmas Theme Startup.
you're not an expert if you don't even know what sounds different versions of Windows had. the first thing I noticed was that Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 didn't have startup sounds (they basically didn't have sounds), because Microsoft invented the sound file together with IBM in 1991 and he had an extension ".wav" (Wave). the second thing I noticed is Windows Whistler. his sound appeared from nowhere and was made in Audition by someone unknown (the reversed sound of turning off Windows 98, the sound from the Microsoft game, and the reversed sound of turning off Windows 2000 were combined). the shutdown sound was stolen from BeOS (I don't remember exactly from where).
