Sutton Foster, Patina Miller, Karen Olivo, and Anna Kendrick: four greats honoring one of the all-time greats, Shirley Maclaine. This is just terrific.
Mike Anderson that is true. she even admitted to being an awful dancer. for west side story, they had to simplify the dances for her and work hours and hours on her. surprisingly she's won two awards for dancing on Broadway and she was surprised by that.
Andre Ribeiro It's because she time off from dancing so she wasn't as good as she was a few years prior. Watch her performances in In the Heights and especially as Anita in West Side Story. She was phenomenal in both.
The three ladies aside from Anna Kendrick here already have years of broadway experience in their belt but Anna, though she started in broadway, have transitioned to Film so she may not be at par with these three ladies in terms of this performance. Film musicals is totally different from stage musical. But Anna, nonetheless, did a splendid performance. I always think she can go back to broadway so she can pick up where she left off and even further hone her talent. Overall, the four ladies who performed are amazing talents and did a wonderful job in their tribute to Shirley Maclaine.
Ill be completey honest before this i hadnt heard of three of these ladies except for Anna Kendrick but i am so glad i saw this so that i could witness what amazing preformers these talented ladies are
One of those women has been awarded TWO Tony Awards- and it's NOT MS. Kendrick (or Ms. Olivio or Ms. Miller-tho' I suspect she'll have two before she retires.)
All of the performers are tops! The best of the best! Such great entertainment! It doesn't get better than this. Even with their brief appearances, each is dynamite from the second that they set foot on the stage. This is real Talent, Talent Talent!
I don’t know why people are saying that Anna Kendrick wasn’t up to par with the other people. Imo her voice was made for broadway which she did when she was younger. All of the woman performing were paying a tribute not competing with each other. She deserved to be up there with those other 3 woman. If she didn’t she wouldn’t be there.
Alaina Leitzke Me too ;) She used to go to my school... and do things at our theatre! It's really is cool, it's kida like, she made it with our same resources, so maybe we have a chance to make it too.
Sam Colins Whaaaaat? Sutton sounds great, as do all of the ladies up there. But most importantly, it is about celebrating Shirley Maclaine- not showing off the performers.
Amazing tribute...One of the few women who can steal a scene from Audrey Hepburn (The Children's Hour). They don't make em like Shirley Maclaine anymore.
Loved all the performances - but Kendrick singing "It's Not Where You Start" is somewhat misleading. That song is from "Seesaw", the musical version of "Seesaw" - in which Michele Lee starred on Broadway. McLaine (who came to my parents' wedding back in 1956!) was in the screen version of "Two For The Seesaw", written by William Gibson, which subsequently served as the basis for the musical.
Which is the first song and Karen Olivo's song? I know Sutton Foster's is 'There's Gotta be Something Better than This' from "Sweet Charity" Patina Miller's is 'If My Friends Could See Me Now' also from SC Anna Kendrick's is 'It's Not Where You Start' from "Seesaw" and the end song is 'Lord Help Us We Love Her' But what are the first and Karen Olivo's songs? Thank yoU!
First song is from Pajama Game. Karen Olivo's song is Irma La Douce, from the musical of the same name. Original soundtrack is here: masterworksbroadway.com/music/irma-la-douce-original-broadway-cast-recording-1960/
Irma LaDuce title song from the film of the same name. It's Not Where You Start is from the play 'SeeSaw'. But Shirley sang it on one of her TV specials (it was amazing then. It still is.) Those kind of TV specials are gone. Tommy Tune in SeeSaw sang it first though. In a balloon costume (don't ask..)
Opening number is Pajama Game (which was Shirley's big break); Sutton Foster - There's Gotta Be Something Better than This (from Sweet Charity); Patina Miller - If they could see me now (Sweet Charity); Karen Olivo - Irma La Douce (from the musical); Anna Kendrick - It's Not where you start, it's where you finish (from Seesaw).
When anyone is awarded a Kennedy Center (Washington, DC) national lifetime achievement award, they give a few at once for different categories and the honorees are entertained and spoken to by colleagues on stage. I have seen them for different categories, but would have to read up on it more to delineate. I am going to look up who else was awarded, and for what categories, the same year as Shirley MacLaine. They are around her in that balcony tier.
You know that Anna Kendrick is the youngest Tony nominee in history, right? It is insane to judge almost any performer from the 3rd rate variety show that the Kennedy Center puts on every year, with cheesy tributes and the worst [and most repetitive] choreography imaginable. And as much as I love Karen Olivo and respect the talent of Patina Miller, calling them legends is premature.
Nick Mayor All the legend stuff is just stuff but man do I agree with the rest. These tribute often misfire. Beyonce performing Proud Mary for Tina Turner? Silly, cheesy, corny, and just plain bad. Not a good use of any of the talent. Oh well, maybe Shirley loved it.
Nick Mayor Yah but a nomination is one thing-being awarded a Tony is another. And of course being nominated FIVE times and being awarded TWO Tonys is something else all together. Sutton Foster IS legendary.
Nick Mayor I did not judge Anna Kendrick just from this performance. If you watch any other one of her performances, it is obvious that she does not have the same level of talent and training that adult Broadway stars have, and it is made even more obvious in this video. And, as mentioned above, Patina, Karen, and Sutton weren't just Tony nominees - they've actually won.
Amy Melendrez Agreed- but I'm saying that Ms Foster might be a tad bit closer to that legendary status- she's won TWO and in all likelyhood will receive her SIXTH nom this year for "Violet" . She's an extremely bankable talent in the theatre who's got 3 movies she's in(one with Robin Williams) waiting to come out besides the new TV pilot in the wings. I'm afraid Broadway is going to lose her. Really hope not.
She's not retired - just taking a different journey. I think you'll see her pop up time to time like she did this summer in the off broadway production of Tick...Tick...Boom (that was only for 3 shows). She also is working on her debut album (funded by Kickstarter) which should be released this fall.
Shirley's face when they announce Sutton is everything, she looks so happy to be honoured by such a talented figure as herlself
Sutton Foster, Patina Miller, Karen Olivo, and Anna Kendrick: four greats honoring one of the all-time greats, Shirley Maclaine. This is just terrific.
Karen Olivo! YES KAREN YES!
She can barely walk on the beat!
Mike Anderson that is true. she even admitted to being an awful dancer. for west side story, they had to simplify the dances for her and work hours and hours on her. surprisingly she's won two awards for dancing on Broadway and she was surprised by that.
Andre Ribeiro But she is a much better actress and singer than she is a dancer. Her Tony award really does demonstrate that.
Andre Ribeiro It's because she time off from dancing so she wasn't as good as she was a few years prior. Watch her performances in In the Heights and especially as Anita in West Side Story. She was phenomenal in both.
Meanwhile she’s a dancing lead in Moulin Rouge
It’s Patina Miller for me 🤩😩😍 I mean the talent is just WOW.
I've had the pleasure to meet Karen Olivo, and she is the nicest, most down to earth person ever!
Patina Miller an underrated Queen 👑❤️
Every time I watch this and see Shirley Maclaine's face, she looks like she's enjoying the joy of the people on stage.
I'm sooo late to the party with this one, but
5:22
SHE'S SINGING ALONG WITH ANNA
This woman is just too precious
Karen Olivo is FLAWLESS. :'.)
sutton the queen
This is perfect and Sutton is a goddess.
Anna and Sutton are just beautiful inside and out
ohhh sutton foster sang "if my friends can see me now" in bunheads :D

Her voice is still great and very on par. She just need some more training and moving while she sings and she should be fine.
Sutton is amazing!!! Love her!
Go Anna Kendrick was not expecting her to be so good

@@alhambralions5985 she was nominated for a Tony at that age too.
We love a diverse group of broadway badass females
Seriously, I'll have to search up Patina Miller!
All of my queens in one video!!!
We need to get Anna Kendrick back on Broadway.
When was she ever on Broadway?
She was on in 1998. She got a Tony nomination. For High Society.
@@QueenofWheels And in 2003 she was in A Little Night Music.
They were all spectacular! Anna is absolutely amazing.

@Sarah Hamilfan Karen Olivo only has a Tony award for West Side Story.
God there's nothing I like better than when someone on stage blows a kiss to a person receiving a Kennedy Center honors... like it just kills me
She looks appreciative and respectful towards the younger stars despite being a legend herself
Patina Miller lookin' like a *SNACK*
They are all good and I hate the constant comparisons from Broadway folk. You suck the joy right out of it with comparison.
You can say that again...You can enjoy someones talent while respecting others for theirs. Everyone's a Broadway Connoisseur these days -_-
8 years and these people are stillll doing it
All of the performers are tops! The best of the best! Such great entertainment! It doesn't get better than this. Even with their brief appearances, each is dynamite from the second that they set foot on the stage. This is real Talent, Talent Talent!
What a super tribute to Shirley!!
Didn't Anna start on broadway though? I think she's doing just splendid.
ALL MY FAVES
How have I never seen these before! What an amazing combination of icons!
Karen Olivo: the Moulin rouge will turn
FORESHADOWING
I heard that line and I thought the same thing
What brilliant performances!! Perfection!!

Karen Olivo used to live close by me!! So cool to have someone from my hometown make it big.
Alaina Leitzke Me too ;) She used to go to my school... and do things at our theatre! It's really is cool, it's kida like, she made it with our same resources, so maybe we have a chance to make it too.
Patina as Charity? It seems like it would have interesting possibilities. Producers . . .
Sutton Foster is God.
Don't get me wrong, Sutton is great but DID YOU WATCH PATINA? OR KAREN? Or....PATINA?!?
MrsLeota yeahhh... they could have picked a different song for Sutton Foster... something that would show off her voice
Sam Colins Whaaaaat? Sutton sounds great, as do all of the ladies up there. But most importantly, it is about celebrating Shirley Maclaine- not showing off the performers.
she's so epic anyone who doesn't think that is weird
yes, she id
Wow so amazing! All of them!
Patina was the Head Player in the Pippin revival correct??
Yes
She won a Tony for it
Lead player yup
So much talent and memories 😭
Karen and Anna are my queens 😍😍

I have one huge crush on Sutton Foster always did have

Me: "YESSS KAREN! YOU SLAY THAT STAGE QUEEN!"
I live for Patina’s jumpsuit

anna Kendrick sounds like a young Bernadette peters. she's swell.
I adore Kendrick, BUT no one sounds like Bernadette. NO. ONE. She is the reigning QUEEN of Broadway!

What was the song Karen olivo sang? And what did Anna Kendrick sing?
Irma LaDuce title song from the film of the same name. It's Not Where You Start is from the play 'SeeSaw'. But Shirley sang it on one of her TV specials (it was amazing then. It still is.) love anna kendrick, but she cannot hold a candle to the other three broadway legends

I think the only way I could love this any more was if Sarah Ramirez was there too.
How many shots of SM do they need watching the perfumers? Geez!
They are honoring her. They get to show as many shots as they want. You want to see how the recipient is reacting.
Anna kendrick. The best out of all!
Half Point 1 but Karen... and Patina... and Sutton. But mostly Karen.
lmao
I thought Karen Olivo retired? I loved that she did this though

Nah. She was teaching a bit, I think, but right now she's doing Hamilton in Chicago
They brought together some top tier musical theater talent to do some decidedly mediocre stuff.
Dislike horizontally stretched videos.
ummm Shirley was a dancer why did they have singers doing dancer songs?
A comment so dumb 5 years later i had to call you out for it.
Anna Kendrick seemed out of place and watching her walk down the stairs was painful.
What makes Sutton Foster so great? I can see or hear nothing particularly special.
KEMET1971 you need to see more of her performances.
She's a triple threat. She can sing, but the most important part is her phenomenal dancing
Honestly, Anna Kendrick annoys.
Sorry true
why r those people wearing rainbow things around their neck???

sutton foster was not a graceful dancer
spectra vonderget Perhaps they should have asked you instead.
Okay, watch Anything Goes by Sutton.
You clearly haven't seen all of Sutton's dancing performances.
