      Brilliant. 👏🏻👏🏻 I always say he IS the actual Phantom, so but of course that will be how his return will go down. :) Swoon.
      My fingers are permanently crossed that the title of this video ends up wrong, and that someday there will be another FINAL final lair posted by Glass Prism, and by then I will have fulfilled my dream of seeing Hugh as the Phantom at least once (or 476) times. I refuse to give up hope.

    This right here is why Hugh Panaro is my favorite Phantom of all time. His acting is believable, the spin he puts on the character is great, he makes the singing look effortless, and he knows when to follow the meter and when he can add a little flourish to it. None of it seems forced, and its a beautiful thing.

    Not my favourite Phantom singing-wise (that has to go to Ramin), but mY GOD do I love his acting. I truly believe that this phantom has never been seen any love or compassion, only scorn and disgust and thus never learned any morals or ethics.
    This phantom also has the insanity-level screwed up and it works soooooo well and imo fits much better than, say, Ramin's FEEEELIIINGSSSSS!phantom. The way he just laughs at Raoul's begging, because why would some sobbing words convince him to let Christine go? He's murdered, kidnapped, manipulated for god knows how long, with zero guilt. And now he's gonna let his obsession go because some boy begs him to???? It IS laughable.
    And yet he portrays such emotion with so little. The second "I love you" and "my angel", I swear, if I was a cryer I'd be bawling my eyes out there.

      I especially enjoyed his shocked reaction to Raoul and Christine's "Christine forgive me, please forgive me" part and then his visible attempt to assert dominance (taking in the breath and fixing his posture) soon afterwards.

    I think Hugh may be one of if not the only Phantom to not cry at the end. Instead, his pain is on the inside and you only see subtle glimpses of it. Beneath his complete insanity, he realizes he is once again alone.

      There's a video here on UA-cam from November 2012 with Hugh and Trista Moldovan and Hugh cried. He couldn't sing "Christine, I love you" and he was struggling to sing "You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now the music of the night" because he was crying. It broke my heart.

    I love it how he not once raises his voice until he actually has to, on his last lines, but there’s this edge to his voice all the time so you can tell he’s quite insane and filled with rage, and after Christine kisses him he sounds just... Broken. I love it. And his voice reminds me soooo much of Michael Crawford, not a “strong” voice (like Ramin’s, for example) but haunting and angelic, very ghost-like.

      That's exactly what drew me to his voice when I first heard it. It reminds me a lot of Crawford's haunting voice, which is what the Phantom ghost would sound like. What I loved about Crawford's performance, especially on the recorded version, is how emotional he is with his lines. You can feel the anger, sadness, madness, and hopelessness when he portrays those emotions. And, come on, his maniacal laugh can't be beat. :) I'm so bias, lol.

He said in an interview the way he approaches acting is to give the audience a peak into his soul, which is exactly how I feel about his performance, and to me that is what is most exciting and why he is my favorite Phantom. He also said this role fits him perfectly, and it really does, like no other actor. His performance is just so unique. And before I watched this video, my favorites were JOJ and Ramin (I've been binge watching Phantom videos for 3 days now lol). But when I saw this video, it was so magical, like I was meeting the Phantom for the first time, in a version that was so different from all I've seen and the realest to me. After this, I don't believe we choose our favorite Phantom, it's our favorite Phantom that chooses us...

      I believe there are several recordings, it's just that they're unlikely to be released to the public. I believe that certain "historical" performances are recorded, such as the record-breaking performance (though that one has Howard McGillin) and the 10,000th performance. I believe there's also a monitor video out there, and I would not be surprised if he has access to a few soundboards of himself. However, these are unlikely to ever be released, at least not while the show is still running, so basically the only way fans might see them is if they are leaked by people working in the theater. That's just the way it works, really, if you're not part of the original cast.

      Patricia the Angel In the first Act the doll is near a true person. And in the second Act it is just a creepy doll. The difference is a metaphor which indicates what happen in The Music of the Night isn't credible. Maybe Christine isnt awake or of sanity, or maybe it is just totally a imagination of the Phantom. Christine is naive or insane at that time, if she isnt, she wouldnt pull off her angel's mask, who she respects and is afraid of.

    Honestly just this video alone ruins it for me to enjoy any other POTO live. It's the best version I've seen (can you imagine if I saw it live - my God I would die happy). The Phantom/Erik is such a difficult character to play because he is so complex- there's the sadness, rage, madness, pride, genius, and intense love, all within the phantom, yet Hugh manages to pull all this off so well and this can be seen in this very scene. The way he laughs at the Raoul boy trying to save Christine without a touch of concern, how he walks around the stage with pride and vindictive purpose, while carrying elegance in his stride. The phantom adores Christine yet wants her as his own possession - and this schism within Erik is conveyed so well omg (how he jumps forward threateningly and tells Christine "you try my patience", and yet the manner and level of voice control he has while he sings "Christine I love you" and later whispers "my angel", it's all there) SO PERFECT. I literally cannot watch any other POTO live now without coming away slightly disappointed with the portrayal of the Phantom.
    tldr I miss Hugh Panaro. Pls come back dammit. Let me hear and see you live at least once.

    Hugh was my first Phantom, I saw him live only a few months before this performance. His was the first and only time I've felt compelled by emotion to spring to my feet for a standing ovation, never mind if anyone else stands (which of course they did). I love the way he moves as the Phantom: deliberate and theatrical, but as though that is just the way the character behaves, rather than because he is on a stage.

    Wow this is really quite a performance from Panaro! A very emotional and gripping interpretation I'd say, both vocally and acting. The scene is a bit rushed musically at the beginning I'd say. If your line is a reaction to something happening or being said, that thing should have been played out before you start your line.

AT ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC MOMENTS OF THE SHOW when he says “make your choice”. i wanted to smack those people it was infuriating. some people dont have theatre etiquette.

      Até que enfim achei um comentário em português hahahaha. Concordo com tudo! O Hugh Panaro é o único que me faz rir no final lair. E aquela parte que ele dá o buquê de flores pra Christine? Jesus eu morro de rir! Com os outros fantasmas eu fico séria e tensa hahahaha. Como eu queria ter visto o Hugh ao vivo!!!!!! Ele é perfeito! Pena que não tinha dinheiro pra ir pra Broadway quando ele estava fazendo POTO. Na verdade ainda não tenho dinheiro pq eu queria ter visto outros fantasmas tb lá fora.

    • @florzinhala
      @florzinhala 2 роки тому +2

      @@jennyjpbr A parte do buquê eu dou muita risada tb. Só ele para abrir os braços dela pra pegar o buquê 😂 ADORO! Eu lembro que na primeira vez que vi um vídeo do Hugh no Final Lair, achei meio estranho porque ele me fazia rir numa cena que os outros fantasmas me faziam ficar tensa, mas depois percebi que ele acrescentava nuances fantásticas ao fantasma. O Hugh disse que ele se baseia no Erik do livro da Susan Kay e realmente é muito igual. Ele quer mostrar a criança abandonada... e nessa cena dá pra perceber bem o fantasma infantil, rindo do Raoul, em vez de ficar revoltado, bravo... e na parte final, quando a Christine vai embora, ele parece uma criança abandonada e perdida. Sem contar que ele é o fantasma mais gentil. Nessa cena você percebe que ele não fica jogando a Christine no chão e empurrando pra lá e pra cá. E quando ela canta "and turn to tears of hate!"... o rosto dele, tipo "Não! Eu estraguei tudo! A única pessoa que se importava comigo... fiz tudo errado! Mas é tarde pra voltar atrás"...
      Desculpe a resposta enorme... é que falar do Hugh em poucas palavras não dá 😂 Ele é genial! Não é à toa que ele ficou anosssss interpretando o fantasma na Broadway. Foram mais de 2 mil apresentações.
      Eu tb queria MUITO ter visto o Hugh ao vivo 😢 e tb queria ter visto outros fantasmas, como o JOJ, Ben Lewis, Gary Mauer, John Cudia, David Shannon, Brad Little, etc. É triste não ter dinheiro pra ir à Broadway e West End rs... só pude ver ao vivo os daqui do Brasil mesmo. Fui em 2005 e em 2018, mas eu queria muito ter visto os meus preferidos... que são esses que citei.

    • @jennyjpbr
      @jennyjpbr 2 роки тому +2

      @La Violet realmente o Hugh dá um show de interpretação! E sim, é possível notar bem o lado criança que ele coloca no palco. Acho perfeito ele mostrar esse lado do fantasma, o lado da criança machucada. Ahhhh sim ele é o mais gentil! Mesmo nas poucas vezes que a Christine cai, dá pra ver que não foi ele quem derrubou... ela mesma se joga porque ele apenas solta os braços dela, sem colocar força. E quando ela puxa o buquê (1:34)? Ele fica todo sentido 😭
      Na parte do tears of hate é de partir o coração mesmo 😭
      Eu adoro todos os fantasmas que vc citou e tb queria ver todos ao vivo 😭😭 O Ben Lewis é um dos top favoritos meus. Ele é meio que o oposto do Hugh, por isso amo os dois.
      Que legal que vc viu ao vivo no Brasil em 2005 e 2018!!! Eu só vi em 2018 e foi com o Thiago... foi uma decepção! Bem diferente dos fantasmas que são meus parâmetros kkkkk. O Thiago cantava mal e a atuação dele era pior ainda! Não sei como o colocaram como principal para interpretar um papel tão difícil. Parecia que eu estava vendo um robô no palco. Não tinha nenhuma emoção, era tudo automático. Zero atuação. Nem me emocionei no Final Lair, nem chorei. Ele não me despertou nenhuma emoção.

      Sim, em 2005 vi com o Saulo e a Sara… gostei deles. Em 2018 vi com o Leonardo e Giulia… pra mim, eles deviam ser os principais da segunda montagem de POTO no Brasil. Eu escolhi o dia que não era o Thiago 😂😂 pq não gosto do jeito que ele canta e a atuação dele é lamentável.

    this sarcastic, mocking version is very fun, although i think it's a bit misplaced in final lair. the lack of genuine emotion shown makes you wonder why on earth christine would ever pity him at this point. so while i think it's a very enjoyable characterization, it would make a lot more sense for a phantom earlier in the play who hasn't been pushed to his breaking point or had any change of heart. but maybe i just like a phantom who gets emotional and screams :) (but also i thought the quiet, confused "go now" was wonderful)

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  4 роки тому +5

      Yeah, I personally love it, but it's definitely a big reason why Panaro can be so polarizing! It actually took me a couple of months, and several videos, to really get used to it. I like it first because I see it as a bit of a coping mechanism (the Phantom's world is falling apart, so some scream, some cry, and some get super sarcastic, as if by making fun of everyone back it can be less hurtful), and second because it does show how childish and child-like the Phantom is. He's throwing little fits and tantrums like a kid denied a toy, but at the end, you also see how lost and confused he is, again, just like an abandoned child. So it adds some layers to the Phantom for me - but I also totally get how it can rub people the wrong way, because it's VERY different from many other interpretations!
