What does it smell like when rounds are fired? Like victory. The sharp scent of propellant and heated metals. Some describe the Abrams exhaust as smelling like burnt cheese. Most hated it, but I found it comforting. Nothing like the smell of tank exhaust on a cold morning, standing behind the tank to warm up before the day's duties. There's nothing quite like operating one of these beasts and I'd not trade my experiences in them for anything.

Yay! This original video was filmed during my son's training cycle, and he's even on screen for a split second! :D (at 10:23, but he's wearing a dust mask in the background so you almost miss him). I wasn't a tanker, myself, but I'm absolutely proud as hell of him & kinda jealous. Those are even more impressive in person, and I get to go "My son drives that thing!"

Great video Courtney. I served 12 years in the Infantry and definitely was not interested in being a tanker. Armor used to train at Fort Knox while I was there but moved to Fort Benning. I worked as an X-ray tech while at Fort Knox and unfortunately witnessed some of the end results of carelessness from not paying attention while inside a tank. As an x-ray tech I saw heads crushed so bad there were actually no identifiable features. Also while I was stationed in Berlin Germany I witnessed an American tank that weighed 60 tons crush a full sized Mercedes Benz beyond recognition.

I grew up on Fort Knox in the 60's and 70's. My dad was a tank Msgt. I used to love going to the range at night and watch the tanks fire at targets down range. Simply best days of my life living on Estrada Avenue. Hanging at the Patton museum watching war documentaries and climbing on all the vehicles playing Army. Chilling at the motor pool eating MRE's. Going into Radcliff off base to hit Grants department store for rubber band gun supplies. . And the ice cream shop. Memories. The best.

OK, your terms are a little muddled. Basic Training is just that, basic, it is where every soldier who just joined goes to learn to be a soldier, learn ranks, how to march, how to shoot, combat etc. After basic they go to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) and there they learn how to be a tanker, engineer, sniper or whatever their MOS (Military Occupational Service) is. Basic For example I took basic at Ft Dix New Jersey and then went to Ft Belvoir Virginia to learn Topographic Survey.

The M1 Abrams has an incredibly advanced gyrostabilizer; allowing it to fire on the move at targets up to 2 miles away.
The first tank to have a gyrostabilizer was the M4 Sherman. The Sherman didn’t quite have the ability to fire on the move; however, the gyro kept the main gun at the desired elevation for firing as the tank traversed rough terrain.

I hate to be “that guy”, but as an old soldier, I wouldn’t want to be all buttoned up with a woman in ongoing fighting for a year long deployment. Hot as hell, smell, and thirst, and the whole hygiene problems we all face, especially in Iraq (anywhere). Tankers are a certain breed, but adding women to combat arms complicates things! Infantry, Armor, Cavalry, Artillery (Red Leg) make it difficult. We kill or be killed, and often can’t be far enough away for privacy or safety. The common sweat and stench is often overwhelming and sickening, but adding in the female component can be worse, let alone losing a female in combat, psychologically is a crusher.

There’s now a drone tank the army is field testing with four configurations, an assault mode, a retrieval mode, a guns mode, and a carry mode. Each mode is very modular and easily swap to what the people need in a hurry. Assault mode is the main form with a standard heavy gun with a machine gun on the side as backup, guns mode is more close combat dumping the heavy cannon for machine guns and anything to filled space with bullets not shells, retrieval mode is the mode where it dumps all weapons and is used by medics or field hospitals to bring back wounded while giving armor to protect them, carry mode is where it’s become a cargo carrier on land and carries four tons of stuff. The pilot has a very similar station to a car simulator just with more buttons and they can be a full mile away and control it although the scientists are working to extend the range. It’s the next generation in tanks as drone tech gets more advanced. Our space agency is working on moon habitats and living in space while launching all the new space exploration rockets for the private companies like spaceX. We are creating new things everyday out for space.

  • @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay

Yeah, the Cav Scouts are one thing the Russian military is lacking. The Russian military is Armor Heavy which means they have more tanks and armored vehicles than Infantry, so when they advance on the battlefield, they go in tanks first and often get curb stomped by enemy infantry with AT missiles. Tanks are supposed to be be priced by scout troops to report on or clear out possible ambush spots. Hopefully the Pentagon is taking notes on the Ukraine conflict and adjusting their training tactics a bit to do what seems to be working on this modern battlefield. But what's crazy now is that armies are using commercial drones with bomblettes or grenades to fly overhead a target and dropping them. And the accuracy of some of these drops are amazing, like dropping them down open hatches of tanks. Like one was dropped directly into the driver's hatch of a Russian tank. Another thru the moonroof of a SUV.

You should really watch the video on the 1991 Battle of 73 Easting. It was a large scale tank battle between the American M1 Abrams main battle tank and the Iraqi army. To call it a battle is a bit misleading in just how the Abrams completely dominated the battlefield. Also if you like training there is a great documentary called BUDs 234 that shows the training to become a Navy SEAL. A childhood friend of mine was in this class.

If you are a driver and you go into the driver's station from the turent if you are incompleasant if someone grabs the Cadillacs the turnt can Cut you in halfA tank is a killing machine it really does not matter what it kills that's the thing about tanks

So how is that any different than any other heavy machine with powerful hydraulics?

Informative video and fun reaction Courtney. Love the backstory on the strap/buckled boots as opposed to laces. tc

Hi Courtney how's it going? :) My Dad use to drive one of these tankers while he was at the Army at war & he was on point too while he shoots these things & he's very accurate too when he hits his targets :)

Great reaction. I was a Marine Corps Tanker. I went through Tank School at Ft. Knox in 84. Sadly the Marines got rid of their tanks. That hurt like a Mother Fr

Courtney.. When they are talking about the smell inside the turret when the gun is fired, you asked what it smells like. The powder used in big guns is very much like smokeless rifle powder but several factors of magnitude greater.. obviously. I was a cavalry scout for four years and then a tanker for another four, so I spent a lot of time around tanks, APC's and Bradley IFV's. Most weapons have a slight ammonia smell after firing due to the propellants being nitro-cellulose based. The very first time you are in a turret when a tank gun is fired, IT'S LIKE HAVING A BUCKET OF AMMONIA MOP WATER THROWN IN YOUR FACE!! Quite a shock to the system to say the least!! By the time you've loaded the second round, that initial shock has worn off and you hardly notice it because you're busy concentrating on your job.

This was really interesting. Definitely would like to see the sniper schools. I lived near Quantico Marine Corp Base where there is a sniper school. I've seen the field they use but not the actually firing. Must be impressive.

I would love to see you do the 82nd airborne training. And jumps. I was in the 82 airborne for 6 years and we trained similar to the rangers back then concerning urban warfare
