Avoiding the news for the last few weeks I'm watching nothing but sewing and knitting videos. I am revisiting my favorite UA-camr's channels and I'm watching whatever the algorithm throws at me and it's been the BEST couple weeks. My machine is at the sewing machine doctor because the stitch length is stuck at something approaching a 1/4 inch😂. So, I certainly can't sew but can watch all my favorites sew all the things.

The thumbnail for this drew me in. I love K. Hepburn. She was an iconic actress that I looked up to so much so as a kid that I actually did a report on her. Her signature style of trouser usually drapes nicely on almost every shape. Loving all the videos I've watched today!!!

The trousers look great! My mum has been trying to convince me for about 15 years now that this style of trousers would look great on me and I think I'm finally willing to listen :D Will probably not trying to make them, bcs sewing trousers is waaaayyy out of my skill level an comfort zone but I'm keeping my eyes open for them in vintage shops :)
Thank you!! They're definitely comfy, I used the same pattern to make a pair of wool pants for winter, and they were the only pants I took with me on contract the entire month of December. Highly recommend if you're into that look!
This is very useful! I recently tried to mock up a pair of pants (I've never had success with pants - the construction is easy enough for me but the fitting, YIKES) and they were way too small, which is my fault for not measuring the pattern before I cut the mockup but anyway. It's good to know that this pattern has a really deep crotch because I am a long torsoed being with a high waist, like seriously, the narrowest point of my body is basically at my ribs. So an absurdly deep crotch would probably be good for me!
Well I'm super glad you found it useful, then, and I can definitely recommend it as having a really deep crotch (or a really high waist, depending on how you look at it)! I would imagine that the reverse alteration of what I did to shorten the crotch would equally be a good modification for you - to add length to the upper portion of the pants!

Yes, I got so much similar feedback on my 2021 retrospective video that it started me thinking that I would be doing a greater service to the costuming community if I could team up with someone with a different body than mine, so we could cover a wider range of fit issues! In a perfect world, I could get even like 1-2 more people involved, and that'd be amazing, but also... I don't know that I have the energy at the moment to coordinate that, so perhaps in the future! I'm making something similar right now, but I'm just using some old cotton fabric, but I'm making a few tweaks. I'm using a teens pattern from the 70s because I like the pockets, but I raised the crotch, make them mid rise (I was using a high waisted overalls pattern, Simplicity 6568), made the legs a bit more of a modern fit instead of the 27" leg openings, and I didn't add darts to the back so I can make it elastic. I've never made a fly, and I don't like how the pattern I have zips up the back, so elastic is my compromise. They should be good for spring. I would love to learn how to use my 1975 sewing machine's buttonholer, but I can't figure it out, and the videos about how to use the machine, are all for the basic functions, not the fun stuff like button holes, monograms, and using cams.
Yes! Love this! It's great to see people of two different sizes do the same pattern...we need more of this. I've made plenty of pants before but I learned stuff from both! Also...if it's not already....Shannonanegans needs to be a thing. /random I feel your pain on the pattern. I had a similar thing happen to me on a vintage playsuit I made last summer, where there were pieces missing, and the pattern was missing key shaping elements and some other important info. So frustrating! Glad you noodled it out!
So silly story, but someone in the Historybounding FB group went off once about how all the Costubers are just trying to emulate Burnadette, and one of the examples she cited was the (apparent) overuse of the word "Shenanigans" which.... like.... people have used that regarding me my whole life because [obvious reasons]. Should I have let that stupid post influence me in any way? No. Do I actively notice anytime I or someone else in the sewing world uses the word now? 😬😬😬 In more cheerful news, I love the turn of phrase, "noodling it out" and will now be adding it to my vocabulary!
@@ShannonMakes Since I started being a tomboy long before either of you were born and my shenanigans were commented on by people who wore what now would have been considered "vintage clothing" (they were born in 1880 and 1905), I think neither of you cornered the market on shenanigans and you both (as well as others) should use the word with impunity. I will certainly continue its usage, as well, because it is a lovely word and accurate still. ; )

It is the same pattern as the blouse from "Vintage Holiday Sewing: 1940's Jumper Dress and Blouse for Christmas" video, although it's not covered in crazy detail in that video, since it's more about the dress! I love that pattern though and highly recommend it!
you said your home sewing machine doesn't do button holes, but I've seen like 2 youtubers both say their sewing machines don't do button holes while the settings for a 4 step button hole steps were right there clearly visible on the dial. they just didn't recognize them. it's worth double checking in the manual. the settings are often 3 different settings on the dial all with a little rectangle with different sides bolded. possibly with numbers and arrows to indicate which order to use them in.
So the deal with my machine is that I salvaged it from a dumpster, so things are not 100% working on it (*were not working... I am no longer in the same country as it). The timing was a wee bit off, most of the zigzag options didn't work, and the little plastic thread holder rod had broken off, which is why you often see the thread in a little glass cup behind my machine. So yes it does technically have the capacity to do buttonholes, but that funtionality ~along with a few others~ was not working. But thank you for pointing it out :-D
@@ShannonMakes oh so it's spicy broken not. Which is fun and exciting. I've fixed the timining on 3 machines by following youtube tutorials. Two actually needed the timing adjusted one I put the needle in the wrong way. It's intimidating to start with but once you get in and start adjusting things is fun in a puzzle kind of way. My brain wants to trouble shoot it but obviously that won't work because you aren't in the same country as the machine and I'm some stranger in the youtube comments. Good luck!
@@mycharliequinn yea, I take my PFAFFs (the ones I have back home) apart to poke around when things go wrong, because I'm fairly handy, but honestly this machine was so junky (and temporary) that it wasn't really worth it for me. I think it actually came from Aldi (...like the grocery store), so it wasn't particularly high quality to begin with XD
@@ShannonMakes yeah. I have so much love in my heart for the really old busted ones but so many times you fix something only to then immediately discover something else wrong with it until eventually you just decide it's haunted and stop trying to fix it.
They look really good! I didn't know pleats can be sewn in, but that is something I will remember, since I don't like to iron clothes. Looking forward to the behind the scenes, the pockets are intriguing and look great!
Yes, low maintenance pants are key! I think the iron-on pleat is, at least to me, associated with tacky athletic-ish wear (which is strange, I know), but it can be done in a classy manner too!
While I don't think I will make these particular pants, knowing what alterations to make to stop having the crotch of home made trousers/shorts at my knees is soooooo fantastic. I knew it was probably something really easy, but to see it done was really helpful. This collaboration with Rebecca is great and I look forward to the next one.
Thanks for sewing these up. I often wondered how these trousers would fit. Helpful tip: Place your pattern pieces so that they all follow the same direction of the fabric's nap, i.e., both waistbands at the same end of the fabric.
The pants look very nice. I am a bit confused about the pockets though, are they used to disguise the fasteners for the pants. Is so, how does thst wok?
They don't disguise the fasteners, it's just that it's quite tricky to have both pockets and buttons in the same place. And many 30's and 40's era pants button up the side(s) since front zippers/openings were considered "vulgar" for those who identify as women to wear. So if you want to have pockets, you have to insert them in a way that you can both access the pocket AND still get in and out of your trousers! 😂😂 I'll go over it a bit more in the BTS video next week - I filmed a more step-by-step breakdown of how it gets assembled!

Well the instructions were rather vague (read: non-existant) on whether both sides get buttons or even pockets, so it's a bit a shot in the dark what the original design called for. I suspect it wants 2 pockets with buttons in both sides, which is what I chose to do, although I personally can fit in the pants just by opening/closing one side, so I could theoretically make one side just have a normal pocket, and one side be a dual pocket-and-button-opening

Lovely! I'm not sure if it still exists but back in the 80s here in the UK you could take trousers to a dry cleaners and they could put a stay crease in. Basically a very thin line of glue in the crease. Lasted quite a while and was very popular because front creases were definitely a thing in the 80s!
I think something like this might still exist - I read about a sort of thread of glue that you could iron into a crease to keep it (but then didn't take the research far enough to try and locate said thread so I guess I don't know if it still exists or is readily available)!

Please make wool pants with a nice tailored waste band and big pockets and buttons somewhere. I just loved your video so have subscribed. I want to make these trousers. You do embroidery stitches that I learned at school here in New Zealand. Patchwork etc. I’m going to pull out my very expensive sewing machine bought 15 years ago.

I am not sure that would be appropriate, or that the pattern maker (having released the pattern years ago at this point) would be interested in our feedback... it's not like we were asked to be pattern testers, so I'm not sure how well our input would be received
I actually started sewing to learn how to make pants that fit (I’m wide hipped and short) and I have yet to see a single pair of pants-the bodysuit I’m working on is the first bifurcated garment 😅 thank you for sharing
Thank you for sharing. This gave me some ideas to mull over. Though my version would be straight legged to suit me. I have some thick cotton blend stretch twill that just might work out nicely.
These are, in fact straight legged (they don’t flare out, they basically go straight down from the hip), but I think I know what you mean… they’re a touch voluminous for my taste as well. Your fabric sounds lovely
@@ShannonMakes I use the current definition of straight leg being a step away from skinny leg. As a kid, bell bottoms and other wide legged pants were the in thing, they always got caught in my bicycle chain and then I'd fall over. 50 years later I'm still paranoid about it. I was in shock to find the fabric sold as a four yard remnant for $24. Usually it's about $20 a yard.
Ahh OK! I don’t shop in stores (other than thrift stores), so I’m not current on what passes as a straight leg these days! Love getting good fabric for a steal!
@@ShannonMakes I often shop at thrift stores and refashion what I bought. It's fun but the items I make from scratch are the most fun. I wish that the fabric at the thrift stores were nice instead of hideous. Last month I found several vintage sewing patterns and red cotton velvet curtains. $15 for all. Enough fabric to make a Victorian ball gown, a vest and maybe a jacket. Love the rush that I get. Just wish that I could justify more sewing but my current capsule wardrobe is big enough.
This has given me the confidence to continue with the pants project I had started nearly a year ago. I have the pattern cut and fabric pre washed so it’s a just starting

Both of your pants are beautiful. Well done. Yay to collaboration. Yay to pants. There seems to be a trick of using a folded strip of tin foil to find the proper curve for your crotch seam - it looks like it will be useful for pattern adjustments. _Small Tip_ - I too have an antique Singer (99K hand-crank from 1915). Did you know that if you slap on a 1960 'atomic' version of an automatic buttonholer foot, it will work with a hand-crank. Nifty little things, those feet; completely worth the rabbit hole dive. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Ah well. Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi is where I live - Centretown Ottawa that use to be a tough-as-nails little logging village named Bytown. Pimisi is one of the variations of the names that the Algonquin people called the place (we're sitting on their un-surrendered territory - nearest reserve is miles & miles & miles from here). There are 3 different Ottawa's on the continent, thanks to the repeated 'Trail of Tears' the Oddawa people were forced to moved through. History jangles like jazz... I have enjoyed your videos - so no fancy strike-out on that part of the sentence, please and thank you... {laughing} Good luck on the intercontinental move and may everything, yourself included, get there in one heap. You'll end up with another vintage lady, that's a when, not an if. They're like rare-earth magnets if your not careful. And yes, the 'atomic' version of a buttonholer came in the nifty and futuristic 1960 green plastic case (the red denotes 'slant shank' machines, green for short shank). It was Singers' last iteration of the buttonholer and they do work without electricity. The older version, that date from around the 30;s-50's, were in a small rectangular box. Look for the fancy box. And look for the 4-pack extension set to get all the options. You can also pick-up a 3D printed eyelet cam from The Featherweight Shop people on the west coast of the US. With any luck, you'll find a Granny who's de-stashing their sets and you'll pay a good price. Also keep an eye out for the 1950's version of their 'automatic zig-zagger foot & cam sets'. Unfortunately, they're collectable. Fortunately, the Grannies pestered the Singer Co enough that they were forced to come up with an option for all the straight stich machines in circulation. So sewing with knits is on the table with the historic machines. Huzzah. Yes, the tin foil trick is something I came across in my travels of trying to figure out pant geometry. It basically gives you a flexi-curve outline of what you're dealing with for the crotch seam. It looks like it works, I just haven't gotten there yet. So. In the meantime... Break a leg. Safe move. And. I'll see you around the interwebs, Kiddo. Cheers!

I'm making something similar right now, but I'm just using some old cotton fabric, but I'm making a few tweaks. I'm using a teens pattern from the 70s because I like the pockets, but I raised the crotch, make them mid rise (I was using a high waisted overalls pattern, Simplicity 6568), made the legs a bit more of a modern fit instead of the 27" leg openings, and I didn't add darts to the back so I can make it elastic. I've never made a fly, and I don't like how the pattern I have zips up the back, so elastic is my compromise. They should be good for spring.
I would love to learn how to use my 1975 sewing machine's buttonholer, but I can't figure it out, and the videos about how to use the machine, are all for the basic functions, not the fun stuff like button holes, monograms, and using cams.

I feel your pain on the pattern. I had a similar thing happen to me on a vintage playsuit I made last summer, where there were pieces missing, and the pattern was missing key shaping elements and some other important info. So frustrating! Glad you noodled it out!
So silly story, but someone in the Historybounding FB group went off once about how all the Costubers are just trying to emulate Burnadette, and one of the examples she cited was the (apparent) overuse of the word "Shenanigans" which.... like.... people have used that regarding me my whole life because [obvious reasons]. Should I have let that stupid post influence me in any way? No. Do I actively notice anytime I or someone else in the sewing world uses the word now? 😬😬😬

@@ShannonMakes Since I started being a tomboy long before either of you were born and my shenanigans were commented on by people who wore what now would have been considered "vintage clothing" (they were born in 1880 and 1905), I think neither of you cornered the market on shenanigans and you both (as well as others) should use the word with impunity. I will certainly continue its usage, as well, because it is a lovely word and accurate still. ; )

Like y'all said, this word's been in use for ages. I can see how that'd draw your attention to it, though. I'm going to notice it, too. But is that going to deter me? It is the same pattern as the blouse from "Vintage Holiday Sewing: 1940's Jumper Dress and Blouse for Christmas" video, although it's not covered in crazy detail in that video, since it's more about the dress! I love that pattern though and highly recommend it!

you said your home sewing machine doesn't do button holes, but I've seen like 2 youtubers both say their sewing machines don't do button holes while the settings for a 4 step button hole steps were right there clearly visible on the dial. they just didn't recognize them.
it's worth double checking in the manual. the settings are often 3 different settings on the dial all with a little rectangle with different sides bolded. possibly with numbers and arrows to indicate which order to use them in.
So the deal with my machine is that I salvaged it from a dumpster, so things are not 100% working on it (*were not working... I am no longer in the same country as it). The timing was a wee bit off, most of the zigzag options didn't work, and the little plastic thread holder rod had broken off, which is why you often see the thread in a little glass cup behind my machine. So yes it does technically have the capacity to do buttonholes, but that funtionality ~along with a few others~ was not working. But thank you for pointing it out :-D

I've fixed the timining on 3 machines by following youtube tutorials. Two actually needed the timing adjusted one I put the needle in the wrong way. It's intimidating to start with but once you get in and start adjusting things is fun in a puzzle kind of way.
My brain wants to trouble shoot it but obviously that won't work because you aren't in the same country as the machine and I'm some stranger in the youtube comments.

@@mycharliequinn yea, I take my PFAFFs (the ones I have back home) apart to poke around when things go wrong, because I'm fairly handy, but honestly this machine was so junky (and temporary) that it wasn't really worth it for me. I think it actually came from Aldi (...like the grocery store), so it wasn't particularly high quality to begin with XD

They look really good! I didn't know pleats can be sewn in, but that is something I will remember, since I don't like to iron clothes. Looking forward to the behind the scenes, the pockets are intriguing and look great!
Yes, low maintenance pants are key! I think the iron-on pleat is, at least to me, associated with tacky athletic-ish wear (which is strange, I know), but it can be done in a classy manner too!
While I don't think I will make these particular pants, knowing what alterations to make to stop having the crotch of home made trousers/shorts at my knees is soooooo fantastic. I knew it was probably something really easy, but to see it done was really helpful.

Thanks for sewing these up. I often wondered how these trousers would fit. Helpful tip: Place your pattern pieces so that they all follow the same direction of the fabric's nap, i.e., both waistbands at the same end of the fabric.
The pants look very nice. I am a bit confused about the pockets though, are they used to disguise the fasteners for the pants. Is so, how does thst wok?
They don't disguise the fasteners, it's just that it's quite tricky to have both pockets and buttons in the same place. And many 30's and 40's era pants button up the side(s) since front zippers/openings were considered "vulgar" for those who identify as women to wear. So if you want to have pockets, you have to insert them in a way that you can both access the pocket AND still get in and out of your trousers! 😂😂
I'll go over it a bit more in the BTS video next week - I filmed a more step-by-step breakdown of how it gets assembled!

Well the instructions were rather vague (read: non-existant) on whether both sides get buttons or even pockets, so it's a bit a shot in the dark what the original design called for. I suspect it wants 2 pockets with buttons in both sides, which is what I chose to do, although I personally can fit in the pants just by opening/closing one side, so I could theoretically make one side just have a normal pocket, and one side be a dual pocket-and-button-opening

Lovely! I'm not sure if it still exists but back in the 80s here in the UK you could take trousers to a dry cleaners and they could put a stay crease in. Basically a very thin line of glue in the crease. Lasted quite a while and was very popular because front creases were definitely a thing in the 80s!
I think something like this might still exist - I read about a sort of thread of glue that you could iron into a crease to keep it (but then didn't take the research far enough to try and locate said thread so I guess I don't know if it still exists or is readily available)!

You do embroidery stitches that I learned at school here in New Zealand. Patchwork etc. I’m going to pull out my very expensive sewing machine bought 15 years ago.
That pattern might actually NOT need an alteration for my freakishly long torso!

What you mean is that if YOU ever decide to make these pants, YOU will shorten the rise. I need to do nothing, I feel great in them, I look great in them, and I'm very happy with how they turned out 😍

I am not sure that would be appropriate, or that the pattern maker (having released the pattern years ago at this point) would be interested in our feedback... it's not like we were asked to be pattern testers, so I'm not sure how well our input would be received

I actually started sewing to learn how to make pants that fit (I’m wide hipped and short) and I have yet to see a single pair of pants-the bodysuit I’m working on is the first bifurcated garment 😅 thank you for sharing

These are, in fact straight legged (they don’t flare out, they basically go straight down from the hip), but I think I know what you mean… they’re a touch voluminous for my taste as well. Your fabric sounds lovely
@@ShannonMakes I use the current definition of straight leg being a step away from skinny leg. As a kid, bell bottoms and other wide legged pants were the in thing, they always got caught in my bicycle chain and then I'd fall over. 50 years later I'm still paranoid about it.
I was in shock to find the fabric sold as a four yard remnant for $24. Usually it's about $20 a yard.
Ahh OK! I don’t shop in stores (other than thrift stores), so I’m not current on what passes as a straight leg these days! Love getting good fabric for a steal!
@@ShannonMakes I often shop at thrift stores and refashion what I bought. It's fun but the items I make from scratch are the most fun. I wish that the fabric at the thrift stores were nice instead of hideous.
Last month I found several vintage sewing patterns and red cotton velvet curtains. $15 for all. Enough fabric to make a Victorian ball gown, a vest and maybe a jacket. Love the rush that I get. Just wish that I could justify more sewing but my current capsule wardrobe is big enough.
This has given me the confidence to continue with the pants project I had started nearly a year ago. I have the pattern cut and fabric pre washed so it’s a just starting

Yay to collaboration. Yay to pants. Yay to just finding this channel (for shame, YT Algorithms, you missed this channel until now - go to the corner and think about what you didn't do). Pants are on my try-to-do list for the summer. There seems to be a trick of using a folded strip of tin foil to find the proper curve for your crotch seam - it looks like it will be useful for pattern adjustments.
_Small Tip_ - I too have an antique Singer (99K hand-crank from 1915). Did you know that if you slap on a 1960 'atomic' version of an automatic buttonholer foot, it will work with a hand-crank. Nifty little things, those feet; completely worth the rabbit hole dive.

What do you mean by "atomic" though? Because the Singer I grew up on (you can see it frequently in my "Bilbo's Housecoat" video from last August) is my great grandmother's from... the 50s? And it has one of those sort of encased-in-a-plastic-shell buttonhole attachments that I vaguely remember using a few times. I wonder if that would work!

Good luck on the intercontinental move and may everything, yourself included, get there in one heap. You'll end up with another vintage lady, that's a when, not an if. They're like rare-earth magnets if your not careful.
And yes, the 'atomic' version of a buttonholer came in the nifty and futuristic 1960 green plastic case (the red denotes 'slant shank' machines, green for short shank). It was Singers' last iteration of the buttonholer and they do work without electricity. The older version, that date from around the 30;s-50's, were in a small rectangular box. Look for the fancy box. And look for the 4-pack extension set to get all the options. You can also pick-up a 3D printed eyelet cam from The Featherweight Shop people on the west coast of the US. With any luck, you'll find a Granny who's de-stashing their sets and you'll pay a good price.
Also keep an eye out for the 1950's version of their 'automatic zig-zagger foot & cam sets'. Unfortunately, they're collectable. Fortunately, the Grannies pestered the Singer Co enough that they were forced to come up with an option for all the straight stich machines in circulation. So sewing with knits is on the table with the historic machines. Huzzah.
Yes, the tin foil trick is something I came across in my travels of trying to figure out pant geometry. It basically gives you a flexi-curve outline of what you're dealing with for the crotch seam. It looks like it works, I just haven't gotten there yet.
