    Good video. You mentioned everything important. It's hard at the Moment to choose the right low profile keyboard because they are only a few on the market

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  4 роки тому +5

      Jens it is rather tough, but I think it’s even harder due to the pcbs and keycaps that are available, or rather unavailable. Finding the right pcb and keycaps that can fit a switch then modding the switch from there seems to be the best option right now. Of course, there’s always handwiring but still the keycaps available limit the options. Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

    Looking forward to this! I've had two OEM boards with Kailh Choc V1s (Havit HV-KB390L and Gamdias Hermes M3) and while I love the switches, the modding ecosystem is very lacking. Decent custom keycaps and compatible PCBs are nowhere to be found, even OEM and non-OEM Kailh Chocs are incompatible with each other.

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  4 роки тому +4

      Exactly it is so frustrating. Finding key caps is the main issue I feel as we could always resort to hand wiring. Hope that we get some keycap options in the future, fingers crossed!

    • @SaHaRaSquad
      @SaHaRaSquad 4 роки тому +2

      Maybe they're all incompatible because of legal reasons. MX-style clones and keycaps are so plentiful because the original patent expired, but as far as I know the Kailh choc design isn't that old.

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  4 роки тому +2

      SaHaRaSquad that’s a little confusing seeing as they’re both made by kailh. I’m guessing maybe kailh wants to move on from the v1s but doesn’t make much sense either, can’t really wrap my head around it.

    I have a choc v1 board, and I've been wanting to replace the keycaps for ages but I don't like flats.
    This comparison is reallly useful since I would have never known how different the housing is for V2, nobody really showcases this. Alas swapping the two for keycap compatibility is not really feasible.

    I really wish they kept the old pin and keycap layout, with the updates in actuation. Especially for the browns... I've got a Drevo Joyuse with red switches and I've been trying to get more tactility, without resorting to clickies. The hunt continues, maybe a spring swap might help.

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  3 роки тому +2

      Hey thanks for the comment! I think if you are comparing tactility they are kind of similar, however with the V2 LP you are pretty much bottoming out with every single keystroke so it does feel a lot less plush than say a lubed and filmed MX brown. That being said, if you can find springs to fit it I think heavier springs on the V2 LP would definitely help the feel of it.

I think it would be a pretty fun project, but do get the switches in and get all the measurements cause from what I’ve learnt so far the dimensions vary ever so slightly. Sheeepman on reddit made a pcb macroboard for the v2 but it’s still in development. His video on the v2 should be the first result when you search the v2 on UA-cam. I would love to see your g915 being customized to sound good. Because Im planning to get their white because It looks so good and there’s just no other wireless like it.
    But the sound is meh. It just doesn’t have that “thoncc”

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  3 роки тому

      I think it's quite impossible to get any sort of thoc from this keeb. A lot of the sound not only comes from the switch, but also the case, and there just isn't enough space in both the low profile switch and case to get any lower frequencies that we find pleasing in thocky keebs. I would imagine the best we could do would be to eliminate as much rattle as possible, but even so that would be a challenge as the stabs for these LP switches are literally a piece of wire clipped to the keycap.

    • @MizzenInflerro
      @MizzenInflerro 3 роки тому +1

      @@fishbuildstuff Oh I see, I just didn't find any alternatives to g913 tkl though, because it's just white :D and I just can't find any with reliable wireless conn. And I'm looking at other youtube videos, and the sound is not bad but you're right it's far from the mech sound that we love. My original plan is to get one for myself and try out lubing the stabs for starters, especially that spacebar which is so eeewww. But now you've mentioned this, do you actually think lubing the stabs will pretty much do nothing to solve the rattle?

    • @fishbuildstuff

      @@fishbuildstuff Hey man! I just got mine. and the sounds isn't that all bad actually. Thought I wasn't expecting the head of this keyboard to be large. Anyways, I'm hearing so much rattle with the keycaps, have you tried any solution to stabilizing that ? like lubing or maybe O-rings ?

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  3 роки тому +1

      @@MizzenInflerro Congrats! I did use O-rings but they made the keyboard really unreliable and mushy. Honestly not much I can think of to fix that rattle. Between how the keycaps are mounted to the switch and the tolerances in the switches itself, there isn't much that can be done. The best I can imagine would be lubing and filming the switch, then swapping out the springs, but then again that's a HUGE project seeing as you have to get the right springs, probably mod some films for it to fit the switches, not to mention desoldering every single switch.

      All keycaps are compatible with the V2, as it's not the length of the mounting stem that's different, just the height of the keycaps. If you're thinking of using the V2's in a build, I would suggest that you mount the switches directly to the PCB instead of mounting to the plate, as normal MX keycap profiles seem to extend past the top housing of the switch.

The switch itself is very similar to stock kailh chocs (G915 browns vs Kailh choc browns), so much so I could not tell a difference. I think only if you are looking to change it to the navy switches which have a very different feel from the stock blues, I wouldn't look into replacing the switches. Unfortunately, in the space the choices are slim, and even slimmer if you're looking at the V2s. The V2 definitely has a better tactile bump than the V1, however there are way more V1 choc switch options available in the market nowadays. They're cheap, and tactility is a very personal choice, I would suggest getting some switches off aliexpress to try out!

    I have been experimenting on the Choc Mini over the normal Choc low profile as it is 3mm slimmer, and they screwed up on that big time. Not only does it now require 4 holes for pins, and a massive hole for the bottom on the PCB as it is a huge rectangle, but the overall footprint is slightly smaller than a Choc, so it will fall through a chassis made for the Choc Low profile. Why the hell could they just not keep it the same footprint as the Choc so one then only needed to work on replacing the PCB.. Arghhh

      @@memecity6722 The v2 is definitely nicer cause of the compatibility with keycaps which is the biggest problem for the V1. Hotswap PCB with outemu switches should be able to fit cherry switches but some hotswap pcbs have a very tight fit, you might end up bending the pins on the cherry switch. god, i have a g815 with browns and I'm going insane trying to find a freaking switch that will let me use normal ass mx keycaps. the only thing i can think of is swapping out the stems and top housings for v2s and getting the linked keycap extenders 3d printed but at that point is the work and cost even worth it? that's £70 on switches and £60 on extenders. i might as well sell the keyboard at that point and use the £130 plus what i can recoup of the initial cost on a decent custom. www.thingiverse.com/thing:2793403/files

    • @fishbuildstuff
      @fishbuildstuff  4 роки тому

      Well if you really want to change the keycaps, one way would be to get the choc-Mx adapter files from thingverse and edit it to fit the Logitech stem. Apart from that I really can’t think of any other way to have Mx caps on the g815 or my g915, and that includes my janky ass modding ideas. Alternatively, and this is gonna be a crazy suggestion, you could mould the profile of your favourite keycaps in silicon, and use a light epoxy to fill it and press the existing keycaps on TOP, this modding the keycaps instead of the switch effectively making your own Logitech LP caps, but that would be tedious and you’ll probably run into a whole slew of other issues. Good luck with your search!

I know when i'll see it. so in the meantime, while I develop a keycap addition, I would like to be able to at least USE them on something. and the epoxy thing sounds both insane and genius.
