I just recently had a "come to Jesus" moment. For the past 5 years I have been in and out of surgeries and dealt with numerous Physicians that failed to remain the student. This sparked the dream of wanting to become a Physician to make sure that nobody else has to ever go through what I am currently still going through. I have enrolled and dropped out of college 4 times. Every single time I get into college I have found out yet another muscle is torn and the emotions spiral downhill which leads to poor mental health and I am then unable to do anything else but BE. Currently coming up on surgery number 4 and 5 (hip and shoulder) and in more pain than ever before. An angel in the form of a Psychiatrist saved my life. She listened to what I had to say and put me on the right medication to get my head exactly where it needs to be. For the first time in 5 years I can sit down and start pursuing my dream. All along I thought being a surgeon was the answer but now more so than ever the field of Psychiatry is grabbing my attention. The field of Psychiatry has saved my life and I am happy to say that I will be enrolling at UTSA for Psychology with a dream of helping patients the way my Physician helped me. Thanks for this insight! I am graduating with my Psych degree in May and I am passionate about becoming a doctor. I just recently realized that I really want to become a doctor so I don't have many prerequisites done that most schools require. I am debating a post bac pre med program or taking courses at a community college to prep for the MCAT. Any advice/ideas? I am open to anything as I am deciding what is best to do!
Hi! Thank you for the helpful video! I am an incoming freshman planning to major in psychology. Some medical schools recommend some courses to take along with the required prerequisites (such as upper-level biology, which is recommended, in addition to general biology, which is required). Should I take those recommended courses to be considered more favorably as an applicant, even though those courses are only recommended and not required? Some of the recommended courses have material I am not confident in, so I don’t want to risk hurting my GPA, but I also don’t want to be considered any less compared to other applicants who may have taken those recommended courses.
I wouldn’t risk my GPA for an optional course. Once you get to medical school they will teach you everything you need to know. Take what’s required and go from there. Your GPA and science GPA will matter more than the extra courses you take.
I didn’t decide to go to med school until my junior year now I’m going into my senior year and still hve to take all of the classes that are pre-med because since I got my associates in Human and social services those courses took my elective slots when I transferred … Can you make a video on how to take courses during a gap year also how to afford life while in med school Because lots of them dnt allow us to work
I want to be a doctor (psychologist) however I don't know what course nor major should I take. I clueless. What should I take if I want to be Psychologist? I'll be a 1st year college this year, btw
psychologist = PhD and you just have to major in psychology -> masters/PhD in psychology psychiatrist = MD and you can major in anything just have to take the science and math pre-reqs -> medical school both have doctorates but they are different as far as scope of practice, length of training etc.
Enjoy high school and college and take classes that are interesting to you. If you can shadow a physiatrist, that would be my biggest recommendation for now (: It's good to get a realistic look at what you're signing up for lol.
I want to be a gynecologist/psychologist but I’m not sure which one. I plan on majoring in psychology and biology but I don’t want to overwhelm myself so I might pick one as a major and the other as a minor. Do you know which one would be better for me
It would be much easier to major in psychology and minor in biology as far as course load. But either is fine. If you enjoy biology more than psychology then pick psychology as your major
I’m in this boat I’m about to start freshmen year as a pre med but I’m Biomedical science major right now but am thinking about switching to psychology i feel like biomedical will prep me more for med school but has some more boring classes like microbio compared to psych
The MCAT luckily covers a large variety of topics. Either strategy can work and help you do well on the MCAT and if you need more supplementation you can take an MCAT prep course.
Hey Tre!📚I'm a pre-med student majoring in nutrition. Love this video, all factual points. I am curious, (you might of mentioned this in a previous vid, if so what is the name of it) if not why did you chose IM over being a Psychiatrist?
I think I could do a whole video on this lol but basically, I just fell in love with the whole body and how it works which I never felt like I learned before med school. Also I like doing physical exams to help me figure out what is going on and there is less physical exam and more talking/mental exams in psychiatry which I didn’t love. This is my “brief” answer lol
Hi I wanna be a psychiatrist that’s my first career choice . I am gonna change my major to psychology incase I don’t get into medical school. If I don’t get into medical school I’ll just earn a masters in psychology and be a social worker . That’s my back up plan . My question is with a psych major how much did you spend on taking the pre reqs needed for medical school ? Psych major don’t have most of em included in their degree plan
it all depends on if you have done all of the science/math pre-reqs! If you haven't you will likely need to add-on a semester or two to get those done (ie. gen chem 1 and 2, ochem 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2, biochem, etc.)
Hey I'm gonna do a combined major in biology and psychology and a minor in microbiology , what do you think?? Is it a good pre med major.... I'm a bit worried about clinical experience as I saw a video which said they didn't get any clinical experience bcz of psych major
pick whichever major you ENJOY the most! any of those will do. There isn't any clinical experience with any of the college majors you gain clinical experience through what you do outside of school
Psychology is a good major because you can take your science classes as your electives. Psych is important especially in the primary care fields like internal medicine and family medicine.
Would a BA in psychology to be a doctor work too? i've done my research and called a med school and they said it doesn't matter, your residency is what matters. not sure how true it could be though
Not a Medical Doctor in any way, however I can tell you that you can major in ANYTHING. I repeat ANYTHING. As long as you complete your pre requisites (prereqs) for med school. I am also considering majoring in phsycology while also completing my prereqs so that i may go into med school. I want to chase neurosurgery because that is my passion. You can major in anything you want, and the plus side, your GPA will be higher since you are studying something you ACTUALLY enjoy. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
Undergrad then medical school then psychiatry residency. Or if you don’t want to go the MD route, undergrad then masters of psychology and can also complete your PhD.
Biology is a great major! And can be very helpful for studying for that particular section of the MCAT but remember there are other large sections on the MCAT as well.
@@DrTreMD Tnx for your answer! Im actually from Israel and I thought to do this too. You like take in addition to your psychology coerces, science courses ( core science courses required)? This is what require in Israel to get the 4 year program in medicine. Tnx again ❤️
either one is fine! I liked getting a B.S. because it did tie in some of the same principles that you will learn and cover in medical school and overall I just found it more interesting and applicable.
📚 Thank you for this video! Can I also ask: is there a lot of essay writing if you're a psych major (compared to natural science majors)? Also, do you think it would be better to major in health/natural sci than psych for the ~advantage~ of having more familiarity with med topics (given that im interested in both majors)?
I only had to write for one course in psych mostly it’s multiple choice testing. Also the major you choose is up to you AND your interests. So many things factor into being a doctor and what we learn in Med school. As long as you take all the pre-reqs you will be ready for med school!
Helloo, I just found your channel and subscribed!! Are you a Psychiatrist I'm still confused. T_T I wanna ask though is Psychiatry a study of PA or Medicine?
I got a B.S. in psychology. From a quick google search “A BA opens up opportunities in fields like criminal justice and social work while a BS prepares learners for more research-based, clinical professions. Many psychology bachelor's degrees prepare students for specialized careers in subsets of the field, including organizational psychology and forensic psychology.”

Hi! I was a biology major changed to psychology major too! Im a junior so I really don’t know if I need to do a post bacc or a masters degree.
it all depends on if you have done all of the science/math pre-reqs! If you haven't you will likely need to add-on a semester or two to get those done (ie. gen chem 1 and 2, ochem 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2, biochem, etc.)
post bacc and masters degrees typically won't have all the pre-req courses they are just additive courses.
Hey question when did you change your major to bio to psychology
I don’t know what major to go to maybe biology or psychology. I need help 😭
I’m a forensics science major with a minor in psychology
Hey I'm gonna do a combined major in biology and psychology and a minor in microbiology , what do you think?? Is it a good pre med major.... I'm a bit worried about clinical experience as I saw a video which said they didn't get any clinical experience bcz of psych major
pick whichever major you ENJOY the most! any of those will do. There isn't any clinical experience with any of the college majors you gain clinical experience through what you do outside of school
Hello! I want to be a family doctor in the future and I just wanted to be sure enough if it's okay to major in psychology
Psychology is a good major because you can take your science classes as your electives. Psych is important especially in the primary care fields like internal medicine and family medicine.
@@DrTreMD thank you! Be blessed
Did you have to keep taking classes after your bachelor’s in psychology to eventually get all your med school prerequisites
CAN YOU PLS POST UR SCHEDULE IM DOING MY ORINTATION IN A COUPLE OF DAYS AND IM SO LOST
So I’m able to major in phycology and become a pediatrician? I really want to major in psychology bc my backup plan is to be a child therapist
Yes, you can!
How long were you in college / med school in total ? I heard it takes 12 years :(
8 years total!
I have a question. Did you take organic chemistry while being a psychology major??
Nope we dnt hve to but for pre med we will hve to
📚 awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Yes any University major works as long as you take the pre-reqs for medical school
I am majoring psychology in College I wanna study the human behavior I wanna no what are the steps of being a doctor of psychology
Undergrad then medical school then psychiatry residency. Or if you don’t want to go the MD route, undergrad then masters of psychology and can also complete your PhD.
I'm an architecture major and I'm doiing pre med for medical school, lol!
Love to see it!
Do you want to do Psychiatry?
No, now I want to pursue cardiology.
Hi. Do you think majoring in Biology would help more with MCAT preparation as well as med school preparation?
Biology is a great major! And can be very helpful for studying for that particular section of the MCAT but remember there are other large sections on the MCAT as well.
@@DrTreMD thank you.
what math classes did you have to take in college ?
Hi, what do you learned in addition to psychology during college?
all the basic sciences and I also minored in Spanish.
@@DrTreMD Tnx for your answer! Im actually from Israel and I thought to do this too. You like take in addition to your psychology coerces, science courses ( core science courses required)? This is what require in Israel to get the 4 year program in medicine.
Tnx again ❤️
May I ask which course in psychology did you major in?
Should I get a BA or BSc in psych
either one is fine!
@@DrTreMD Thank you so much for taking the time to reply
Helloo, I just found your channel and subscribed!!
Are you a Psychiatrist I'm still confused. T_T
I wanna ask though is Psychiatry a study of PA or Medicine?
I’m training in internal medicine! Not psychiatry. And you have to go to medical school to become a psychiatrist ❤️

thank you for watching
Was it a BA or BS in psychology? Does it matter ?
BA= Bachelors of Arts and BS= Bachelor’s of Science
I got a B.S. in psychology. From a quick google search “A BA opens up opportunities in fields like criminal justice and social work while a BS prepares learners for more research-based, clinical professions. Many psychology bachelor's degrees prepare students for specialized careers in subsets of the field, including organizational psychology and forensic psychology.”
Hello Dr. Tre, thank you so much for your videos ! I just found your UA-cam channel and you have a similar interest in medicine as me. I majored in Psychology as well, however I want to be a Psychiatrist. Is there anyway that I could personally connect with you ? I tried searching for your Instagram account but, I could not find it. Could you put a link to it instead ?
There should be a link in my bio but I did upload this video differently! My Instagram is Untre_ceeble or you can email me at untreceeble@gmail.com
