I have found just cutting the top off first, then peel the dried layers off with your fingers is easier. No need to cut into it at all.
Agree, peeling best method without damaging rings.
I honestly thought that was the way everyone did it. Been doing it myself for as long as I can remember.
really appreciated this as a 14 y/o learning to cook by myself
Yes!!! You probably heard me screaming this all the way from Ireland 😂😂
Always start by cutting the onion right in the middle. That will allow the layers to slide out without being compressed by a tighter diameter compressing it to the breaking point
You don't need to do the long cut to skin then. Just slice. The skins come right off.
Thank YOU
Thank YOU
Thank YOU...
I used to have a tiny "Bistro" and never Fried anything...
My daughter has an Air Fryer... (NOW I need to buy one for sure)...
I wanted to do Onion Rings but don't like to FRY anything... Unless I have to..
I am so happy to find this video...
I love how you explain everything simply but also in detail
We can cook onion rings in airfryer!? Omg. Thank you so much!
I hope they turn out great for you!
Just cooked it, turned out so good! 😍 Thank you so much for the recipe!

Thanks Brie! Hope you love it.
Can’t wait to try this recipe! Thank you!
This is another definite try!!!!! Thank you
One of the best cooking videos I've ever seen.
Thanks for the recipe.
I like how you make all your videos look so simple. Keep that way 🙂
We will make them ourselves! Thanks
Just made them! I like the extra coating so my rings had some more bread crumbs on them. Also, I added a little beer to the buttermilk/egg mixture for a namesake beer batter onion rings LOL!
I had my doubts but these rings are LEGIT! Crunchy and not greasy. Great job, Justin!
That looks awesome!!
Woo, I love this !!! Will cook these now. Thank you for sharing !
Love hearing that, enjoy!
Thank you for sharing
Adding to my Sunday cooking list now! 🎉
Woo! Will definitely try it. Thanks for the video!
My pleasure!
That crunching sound😄
😋😋😋
Nice recipe ..thanks for sharing.🥰💖❤
Thank you sooooo much
Your recipes are awesome. Great job
Thanks so much!
I’ve made square bit onion rings years ago..... about 1/2inch by 1inch.... when my daughter was little she liked them better than the rings.... so next time try that with all your broken pieces :)
I usually remove the thin membrane between the layers. This helps to avoid tugging out all the onion out of the crust when you bite into it.
Nice recipe great job😋
Merci!
I made tonight for the first time and (though I was not nearly as smooth and clean as u are) came out amazing! I do wish they were less work especially as I had to do 3 rounds as can’t fit many in my Gourmia 7 qt
I love ❤onion rings and I’m definitely going to try them out soon. Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you create these delicious onion rings. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too
Love you ❤from Lebanon 🇱🇧
Wows...Well done, who'd never ever thought of peeling an onion before this video ? Well done champ !!
FFS, seriously ??
Love this recipe! Again remember that you don't want to use aerosol sprays on your basket and/or any food going into it, because the nonstick coating will break down and flake off. I'm so glad that you're using panko bread crumbs in your 3-step battering and breading process.
So what can you use then...can we use olive 🫒 oil?
High smoking point oil only, so peanut or grapeseed@@coreturkoane5570
Healthy Onion Rings!!! Who would have thought?! Thank you man! 👍
My pleasure!
When I went to America and tried those American panko i was high sad at the consistency and lack of flavor. if you ever get a chance to see Japanese Panko, please try it! the flakes are bigger, airy and fluffy adding an amazing crunch.
Tonight I'm making onion rings buffalo wings and chips in the air fryer
Hi❤I just got the gift I will try your recipe 😋 thanks for the great video 👍 ❤!!!
air frying them rn, i'l edit comment and tell you how they turned out...
Edit: I made them... They were delicius! I was cutting them into small pices, so, that is maybe why they were a little bit over baked, but the taste was amazing. Thank you Coit for this great recipe.
Nice! Hoping they turn out great!
They look really good. I will make them for my hubby. Tonight for our tea I did a fry up, it turned out really good and the best bit there was no cooker to clean
Forget him. Make me the onion rings
The broken ones still taste the same lol
@Cooking with Coit why is the egg diluted with buttermilk? None of my coating stuck?
I like your nice kitchen
After dredging can you freeze them to cook later?
Will the onion rings fly in the fryer? I have a Philips airfryer which I have bn using for 8 years but when i put in light things like a piece of bread, it flies to the top and get burn.
Going to try now brb with my Results....
Would it be better to add the seasoning to the bread crumbs and not the flour?
Push the smaller end through the bigger 🤗
Regarding the flour - if it's not an objective to get the flour to stick to the onion then wouldn't it be better to add the other seasonings to the bread crumbs instead?
My thought too lol
The Flour is to take the moisture out... then the others can stick to the Onion ring.
Is it still good if you only use egg and breadcrumbs for onion rings?
Those look amazing. Must make them asap.
Questions - I don't buy buttermilk because I'd have to throw the leftovers down the drain. I have a bag of powdered buttermilk. Could I reconstitute and use that?
Hubby only likes his rings made with cornmeal. Could I mix some cornmeal into the panko, or would that make them gritty and gummy?
Hi- yes I believe powdered buttermilk should work just fine. Regarding cornmeal- I haven’t used it to bread food in an air fryer but I say give it a try. I bet it would act just as breadcrumbs would. Good luck!
@@cookingwithcoit thanks will do
Next time I am attempting with just the egg.....I am not sure the purpose of the milk in this particular recipe because none of my coating stuck!
Hi I’d really like to try this but I can’t get buttermilk here in Cyprus, can I use milk insread ? I love all your recipes. 😊😊
You can make a buttermilk substitute by adding a bit of vinegar to regular milk. I think it is like 2 tbs per cup, but you can search for other ratios.
Can we do without eggs?
You did it again!!! 🌟 The onion rings look so delicious! May I ask what the name of your Air Fryer is?
Thanks Monique! My air fryer is the Cossori 5.8qt
@@cookingwithcoit You're so welcome. Thanks for the information! 🙏
I've just gotten a puremate 5.5l. I bought it because I wanted a white one. It's great to use
I have a Cosori, bought from Amazon during their prime days, good machine!
Cosori I had to trade my in for another because of a recall .
איזה חמוד .
If the flour doesn't really stick to the onions, does the paprika do anything? Why not put the paprika in one of the other bowls instead?
How long can you keep Panko
bread crumbs
Now if only I could buy oliveoil spray in Germany. :-D
USE PAM spray... or put EVOO in a Spray Bottle...
I love onion rings but I don’t eat them
As they are too fatty when cooked. These are perfect 😋😋😋
I hope you give them a try Carol!
👌👌
Is it possible to use regular milk instead of buttermilk ?
Yes or add some drops of lemon to the milk and you have buttermilk
4:00
Your hyped, your music is hyped. Hard to feel calm listening but I do like your recipes. TY
I think you can add oilve oil in the butter milk rather than straying
my husband can't have dairy and wheat. what are substitute ingredients for the buttermilk and flour?
Coconut milk and oat flour. 🤷🏼♀️
What if you don’t have butter milk? What substitute can you use?
About 1 teaspoon of vinegar to one cup of whole milk
I was looking for this comment
you can really taste the difference
Why didn’t mine come out anything like that haha. I think I may have oversprayed them
0:31 IS THAT A ONE PIECE REFERENCE!!!!!
Who uses a knife to remove the outer skin? You can just peel it off.
Use a mandolin to cut the onions so they won’t break. Cooking 101.
NO... not cooking 101
You have to cut them THICK ... a mandolin can't do that... it will cut the onion too thin...
Cooking 201 ..
I have absolutely never thought about making fried onion ring in an air fryer but thanks for asking.
Why use butter milk?
I would just bake them on the baking sheet 🕵🏼
can i use milk instead of buttermilk?
Mix in some lemon juice about 1 - 2 tbsp to the milk
It’s nice that you include the problems cutting onions I have had the same problem for many years scoring the precious outer ring. . One day I cut the onions and wanted to wash away a bit of the boldness as I was using cooking onions ; I threw them in a water bath . After I finished making the batter, etc I took the onions out and surprised that they popped out and the onion skins came off effortlessly. Hmmm? Watching your techniques I thought to myself why score the onion why not take the whole onion and cut off each end, save them for stock. Then cut the onion into rings leaving all the skin on. Put into a zip lock and make them later as I always use onions. That worked well the skin was soft and came off easily. But that middle , So I redid and popped the centre out that I use for everything and put the rings into a ziplock back for tomorrow. Well, the onion relaxed ( did it dry a little or did it relax) onions are under pressure to be good. Haha. Removing the centre the rings separate . Wow. Secondly, going into the air fryer the delicate rings and crumbs falling off. Yep , I’m a newcomer to air fried. I thought air chilled; freezer. Followed your instructions but then I put them into the icebox for a day ( I did eat some while I was having fun). Frozen I took them out and why use spray oil I brushed them with avocado oil. Really happy how they turned out. Thanks to your video and all the steps , effort and love for onion rings I believe I will never deep fry an onion ring again.
Avocado oil is better for high-temperature cooking, olive oil can not sustain high heat it will go bad. Everyone must check out different cooking oil best use temperatures. All veggie oil already turn bad when they are out.
👍😋
Can you substitute butter milk with something else (regular milk?)
We can’t do Gluten, Dairy or Eggs.
I wish this was a Vegan recipe. 😊
I tried but my onion rings look shrivelled up, am I popping them too thin?
lol
Do you not heat up the air fyer first? H
Can I use beer instead of buttermilk?
You can definitely try! I haven't done that but I suspect it could be great.
Beer Batter... but not for this...
Onion rings in a air fryer
A bird's beek paring knife would be perfect for skinning.
hes says the flour is not important but add's a bunch of spice's to it?
Your pushing them out the wrong side, instead of ruining the onion by guess cutting , poke your knife under that first skin and push the knife in sideways all the way through and then voila rip that outer layer
My first try was a disaster...been cooking for50+ years...Nothing worked. The breading did not stick at all. Also,I am wondering why we are putting spices in the flour when you say that the flour is not really meant to stick. Spices are expensive these days. It seemed that everything was very dry, I did the 10 minutes, so back to square one! I think I am going to try to moisten the rings with water, dip in the flour, and proceed from there. From all of the cooking I have done the dredging and having the flour first was there to make the coating stick. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Maria- the egg and butter milk should coat the onion rings no problem. Even without flour. Did you follow the instructions or did you change some things? Thanks
Exactly, did everything exactly! Which is why I asked, otherwise, I would not have asked!
Or you could buy a large bag of onion rings from the supermarket for $3.99.
Looking delicious. Nice presentation...very nice....waiting for you in my youtube world. Stay connected 🤝🤝
Thank you!
This whole video is 99% filler 1% how to make onion rings
Can we use water ???
Im doing it now. Lol I'ma let you know how it comes out. I just realized I didn't have any milk I always make buttermilk with lemon and milk but I'm doing water with a little vinegar
It came out good. If you cut them pretty thick everything might not stick well but it came out bomb
@@cutecatthy97 tnx

VINEGAR takes OFF things... Vinegar Cleans things off... No vinegar...
Where did you get the idea of using vinegar???
@@judichristopher4604 the acidity in vinegar is similar to lemon. They both are great cleaning agents as well as gets the job for buttermilk
I don't have buttermilk though:(
Add a little vinegar or lemon juice to your milk

You had me up until the ketchup. 😊 ranch dressing for me. I wonder if anyone uses those air fryer liners? Are they worth it?
Does it have to be buttermilk
Add a small quantity of lemon juice or vinegar to fresh milk. It will curdle into buttermilk
Great tip Carol
NO... it can be just milk
That's an odd looking airfryer.. mine looks like a small oven. Ok, I call mine my Easy Bake Oven. lol
My air fryer changed my cooking life for the better.
For the dip try this if you’re not familiar with it. Mix mayonnaise with the ketchup, you can play with the ratios, if you like that you can experiment with other seasonings added This is big in Utah, very few use straight ketchup. Everyone calls it fry sauce.
Is it necessary to continue saying “dredging station” ?
why dont you peal onion by hand ?? its easier than knife
