In Episode 2 of the Lane Acclaim Furniture Restoration series I will be refinishing a gorgeous pair of step tables manufactured in 1964. These vintage mid-century modern step tables were very common during the 1960s and were most often used as lamp tables. With the iconic dovetail design, these tables are hard to overlook. During the refinishing process, I will share my top 5 favorite finishes for Lane Acclaim Furniture pieces.

I am excited to be kicking off this Lane Acclaim RESTORATION Series! These episodes will be included a few times a month along with the normal restoration videos! I will be trying several different finishes for all these pieces. Let me know some of your favorites! Thank you for all the support. Barry
I see you have an Amazon wish list. How do I go about using this? Also you mentioned another channel. What is it called so I can follow that as well. Thank you.
@@janeyhazelwood9894 Mad City Restorations. I think.
I thought I had subscribed to your channel a while ago, and just realized watching AT Restoration that I hadn't seen anything from you in a long time. So, subscribed (again, maybe).
The medical field lost an incredible provider when you left it! Your whole presence emanates calm and healing. I wish our system was supportive of the first line of care. Your videos always make my day.
This comment means so much to me
Agree, you share information with so much patience and detail. Plus I really learn from your process and knowledge.
Right? I'll bet his voice alone could reduce blood pressure. Lol
My wife is a nurse in memory care and wants to go into a different field. Ive tried talking her into helping me in the shop but she thinks its too boring lol@@MadCityModern
This is exciting news! Some people will wonder why I get excited over furniture restoration, and some other people (Barry, and our band, over here) will Tottttttallllly, "get it!" :)
Right, folks?
I totally get it : )
Dang I can’t believe how much education I get by watching your videos. Thank you Barry
I love that you learn the history of the pieces and share them. I makes your channel stand out for me
Thank you Samantha! Barry
Beautiful work! My mind is blown too because I never knew you could reverse clamps to gently pull pieces apart. 😲Thank you for all you do and the care and time you put into your work.
Thank you Shayna!
in a violent and noisy world... your channel is a comfort. it's beautiful and relaxing. congratulations
I really appreciate this
Love the metal ice cube tray! So interesting to see how you use the different sanding blocks (I didn’t know they existed 😳). I learn something new from every one of your videos. Your love and appreciation for these pieces is evident in the meticulous way you restore them. Thank you for sharing.
One of my favorite parts of the vid
This form of ice reminded me of my parents' house. I think they must be lost in some closet. I missed your videos. In addition to seeing beautiful things, they distract me. I was working in Warsaw with the refugees, a very difficult job, your videos helped me to think about other things. Thanks!! Good vibes and Namaste!!
I love this! Would love to hear your stories
Beautiful work, as always, Barry. My father made much of our furniture in the 1950-70s, so we had few commercial pieces. Lane used to sell miniature "hope chests," and I've inherited a few of them from my grandmother and great-grandmother. These Acclaim tables are the ultimate eye candy, and I can't wait to see more of them in your subsequent videos. Thank you for all the time and TLC that go into your projects!
I can't wait to discuss more about the hope chests
Oh yes. The Lane mini cedar hope chest. It was a tradition that girls received a gift certificate from a local furniture store in there senior year of high school. Mine came from from M Shaivitz & Sons, Inc in Baltimore City. I got mine in 1968 (fall of my senior year) and it is in the same condition as when I received it. It went to college with me, when my son was in his teens I let him use it to keep "stuff" in, then took it back from him when I discovered that the "stuff" he wanted it for was cigarettes (big NOPE there), and I have had it since. Love my little Lane chest. I often wonder how many, if any, of my classmates still have theirs at all. Wow, I just did the math .... my chest is 54 years old. Unfortunately, Lane did not put a manufacturing date on those chests. Rats. It would be fun to know when it was "born".
Perfect timing. I recently bought an Acclaim end table at a thrift store for $22.48 (senior day)! I haven’t refinished furniture for years but am retired now and couldn’t pass this up. Very good condition and the finish appears original, but flaky. Sanding the top might be all it needs but I’m not sure how to finish it since it isn’t part of a pair. I’m sure I’ll find the answer in this series. Love your channel and never miss an episode.
Wow! Awesome find
The able u restored in this video , my parents used them as end tables. They had 2. We also had that giant round coffee table from the same group. I never knew until watching ur videos how popular this furniture series was. Had no idea it was made by the cedar chest company. It really brings back a lot of memories.
beautiful!. I noticed the typewriter and table in the background. My dad still has the one like that we learned to type on and typed our high school term papers on. Wonderful.
Love that you noticed the typewriter
Hello Barry I'm so excited to here you're doing a series on Lane pieces. As I live in Virginia I have been to the Lane factory & showroom in Altavista. Growing up we had these pieces in our home. They are timeless pieces of furniture. I still own a Lane hope chest. Thank you for doing a series on this. :)
This comment made my day. So there is actually a showroom? I'll be visiting that area next month
The Lane Plant in Altavista closed in 2001, but they have a museum. I read some interesting facts on the Lane Co. on the internet. I'm sorry that you won't get to see the plant or show room.
I have one of these tables that came with my first apartment when I was in college, many years ago, that I was able to take with me and I still cherish it today. It's lovely to watch how the table is constructed, and while you're showing the restoration I'm able to gaze at my table with a newfound appreciation.
I'm always so excited when I see you've dropped a new vid :) I could watch and listen to you for hours... Please say that I'm not the only one that is so in the moment that I blow the screen when you are sanding, lol.
This really made me smile
I love watching you work (from Munich, Germany in case it's not pinned yet!), and listening to your stories and process. Keep up the wonderful work, it's so great that you are saving so much wonderful furniture.
Thank you so much for the support from Germany
I know absolutely zero about this manufacturer. Beautiful pieces, I will be watching your videos avidly. 🙂
Love this!
Nowaday it is useful piece for video conferences when you want to have your laptop little bit higher.
Amazing restoration. Thx.
I appreciate the therapeutic part of furniture restoration. I understand this.
Love the vintage ice cube tray. I grew up with these.
It is pretty neat.
Barry
We've sold a pair of the two-tier without refinishing for $380. We have another pair of the two tier (900-07), a regular coffee table (900-01) and a regular side table (900-05) that will be our first set of furniture to refinish. Sanding and scraping takes for EVER.
I prefer the stark contrast of no stain. My wife prefers the look of using candlelight stain.
Hopefully these last few videos help! Let me know how they turn out. I love seeing comments like these
You have the coolest old gadgets! Loving this series so much! Altavista is around my family home. As always, love your work, your passion and your lessons. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
Hi Christine. Thank you for always having encouraging comments. Barry
I know nothing about Lane Acclaim Furniture other than it's beautiful. I love it when you start to put the last coat of finish on the wood, that's when it really brings out the colour and shines! Stunning, just Stunning! Thanks Barry again from showing us how to restore gorgeous pieces of old furniture.
My favorite part also
Oh wow! I follow other UA-camrs who promote Athletic greens And you’re the first one that gives the details as to specific attributes for example the probiotics. With this information I will move forward with adding them to my wellness routine. Keep up the good work, enjoy all of your videos!
Thank you, Lynda.
Barry
I love these tables, my grandparents had these by the sides of the couch and they held everything from lamps, phone ☎, TV guide, snacks whatever needed. Brings back great memories. Thanks both have been gone a long time but there are lots of good thoughts left. Have a great day
I love memories like these
Those tables are gorgeous!!
Thank you.
Barry
Great job! I enjoy watching the episodes. Your voice is so therapeutic as well.
Thank you so much
Nice guns, Barry. Would you mind making a whole video of you just crushing that ice? 😉Just teasing you. 😁
On a serious note, one of the things I like most about your channel is the way you take your time to explain each piece, including it's history. I'd much rather watch a calming, informative video than one pumping out furniture. 🏵️
Thank you so much for your kind words and support.
Barry
Really beautiful pieces of furniture.
Thank you

Thank you Yasmina
😍 what a beautiful restoration! Those tables are awesome!
Thank you my friends
These tables are amazing. I remember them in my grandparents' homes, both sides. They were really the rage in the 50's & 60's. Violet Joy, I'm with you. I think my BP drops 30 pts when I watch Barry's videos. Keep up the great work, Barry.
I really appreciate this Tom
You do such a beautiful job. I'm getting ready to do 3 pieces (not Lane) but they're solid wood and I'm hoping that I can do half as well as you do. I have a lot more confidence in refinishing these pieces thanks to watching your videos. Wish me luck and thanks for you sharing your knowledge of refinishing furniture. I'll try to make you proud.
Thank you for sharing this. Good Luck, and please let me know how it worked for you.
Barry
I love this finish. I much prefer to see the contrast in color between the different woods.
Nice set! Great job!
I missed where you left the medical field. It’s absolutely NO surprise to me, if you are someone that enjoys people, helping, and genuinely care.

I am so excited about this new series! I don't know much about this line of furniture but I love all the pieces of it that you have done. Looking forward to what you do next. Thanks Barry!!
Thank you Daniel!
Nice! Love the contrast.
Thank you
Absolutely beautiful. Love your channel. Keep ‘‘em coming!
Thank you Shirley
Hello Barry, lovely furniture but after your restoration definitely much much beautiful you explain so well that some times I think I can do it too 😁thank you 🌷🌷🇵🇹
You can do this Manela
Soooooooo GLAD for this video Barry!!! Just spent over 40 mins. trying to deescalate a grown Man acting like a petulant 12 yr. old & throwing a tantrum in our front lobby claiming discriminations from me & now it's time to unwind & actually wish him well & pray for him because his life is going to be very difficult with the chip he has on his shoulder. Looking at everyone in the chat makes me so happy. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
My friend! Sorry for such a rough day. Hope you enjoy the video and thank you for the support
These are just so beautiful! I'm loving this series, Barry!
Thank you! Can't wait to share more
Barry, I'm so very excited that you are starting this series!!! These Lane tables lay close to my heart and my absolute favorite! I grew up seeing these in my mom's living room in Long Island, NY and of course as a child I didn't appreciate them as I have for a very long time now. Thank you and I dream of having the whole set one day!!
I hope you get the whole set one day. Thank you for being so supportive of the series.
Barry
I love your passion and your videos! This a great series and I’ll be tuning in. The tables look beautiful.
Thank you Christy
I liked the reversing the clamp to turn it into a spreader trick. I'm definitely going to try that sometime.
Worked so well. Just make sure you have the soft grips
I would never have thought of using clamps that way. Brilliant!
I have really developed an appreciation for the Lane Acclaim pieces. I have never seen it in person, but you make it look so good that I can't resist it!
Always love your feedback!
I absolutely LOVE the Lane Acclaim series. Wish I was closer, I would grab these from you! They are gorgeous pieces. Excellent work. I appreciate your careful work on these tables to protect the integrity of the original design.
So glad you liked them. I like the stark contrast but will also be doing darker finishes. What's your preference?
Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks, beautiful work! I just restored a coffee table, it had weird colored drop down sides. Reddish while the rest of the table was more neutral. I used odies oil, since staining seemed impossible. The oil base top coat you used may have been a better answer for me. Really nice pieces.
love it! you rock!
Thank you
Beautiful
amazing work barry!! you can tell how much care and thoughtfulness you put into every piece-the after shots are totally stunning! cant wait to see what else you have in store
I really appreciate this!
They look beautiful Barry. Can't wait to see what is in store for the other pieces in this series.
Thank you Cassandra
I love Lane Furniture so I’m enjoying this series. Those tables are so pretty. I would love to find a coffee table from Lane for my living room, so we’re going to look at the Restore. And by the way, you’re welcome. Lol
You saw the sandpaper: )
Beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you.
Barry
Literally had me rolling on the floor laughing when the Restor A Finish and Feed and Wax came out. Good job 👍
Been using the hvlp gun more with these pieces. I like a more professional finish but am not a huge fan of the way it hides the contrast, even if that is the way they did it in the factory. What are your thoughts on the finishes you've applied to your own pieces? Hope you see the vid with 5 different finishes on the other channel and offer feedback
@@MadCityModern I'll have to check it out. Just confused why there's different channels.
The other channel was actually created for restoring all of my grandfather's old tools. UA-cam puts your channel into categories so it didn't make sense to do tool Restorations on a furniture channel. I only added the lane table video because it wasn't actually a restoration project. More of a test for finding the right finishes for future projects
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you Keith! Barry
Very striking! Well done, Barry!
Thank you!
Barry, you blew my mind with that reverse-wood clamp trick! 🤯 Never seen that before! Thanks so much for the videos, they’re so informative, inspiring, and calming.
So glad you enjoyed that
Beautiful work,,
Thank you my friend
Thank you Barry! Beautiful work my friend! They are not my cup of tea, but they have their place in the world, and you did a great job with them. As always.

Hi Barry, the Lane furniture is very pretty. You did a wonderful restoration job on them. Looking forward to more videos. Take care, Joyce❤️🇺🇸🙏
Thank you Joyce!
Barry, once again a beautiful job done on these Lane Acclaim tables. Keep up the good work.👍
Thank you my friend
I had no previous knowledge of this line, but if I had, I would have looked for it to furnish our house. As always, great work!
I only recently discovered it
I love these Land tables. I had not seen or heard about them until I started following your Chanel. I’m from Canada and I’m not sure if they were sold up here. Thank you for all the history and info on refinishing 💕
I've wondered how many have made their way to Canada over the years
Just absolutely gorgeous!! ❤️ ❤️
Thank you so much
Omg I really love this great job. Love your new channel. Sending love from Australia
Thank you Carol!
Beautiful finish on these tables. I’ve never used wipe-on poly before. I think I’m afraid I’ll mess it up but it always looks so smooth and perfect.🌸
You can do it. It does make a nice finish.

Nice work!
Thank you!
Think this is my favorite finish so far. I really love the contrast. The only thing I know about Lane Acclaim furniture is that I want some!
Wow! I love this comment
Always enjoy your channel
Thank you, Rosa.

Nice work 👏👏👍
Thank you Michael
I love these pieces ,I havnt seen them here in New Zealand so I presume they were never exported....beautiful finishes you have used
Thank you so much
After watching the first episode I couldn't wait for the next. Then my memory was jogged. I have a small Lane jewelry box, my mom gave me. Which her mom had given her. Well, after watching your video, I guess we now know what it actually is.
So you've seen the Cedar Chest Video?
@@MadCityModern yes, sorry. It was really late at night when I wrote these comments. I believe around, 1 or 2am
Wow love that coffee table or what ever it is, I haven't seen that kind of furniture where i live. I want to get hold of that kind of furniture.
Thank you Grace
I’ve never seen these pieces before. They are gorgeous! I’m in Virginia and often find small Lane cedar boxes that were given to graduating seniors by Lane in hopes that they would buy a larger hope chest. A friend of mine has one of their hope chests & told me that story.
Lovely finish and very enjoyable but relaxing video..Natalie
Thank you Natalie! Barry

Hello Mia. You bring up a good point. I will intentionally make a few longer videos for all the faithful supporters who have been with me all this time. Thank you for the great suggestion. Barry
@@MadCityModern thank you, very much appreciated!
Excellent video! Can’t wait for more from this series! How do you sharpen your carbide scraper blades? Do you have a video on that? Thanks!
I'll try to remember to show that
Beautifully finished as usual Barry. We don't see any Lane Acclaim furniture here in Scotland or the rest of the UK. Pity because it's solid and very attractive.
Glad you liked these ones!
This is a very exciting video for me to watch. I passed on buying a Lane coffee table not too long ago because I was overwhelmed by the shotty job a previous owner had done on gluing the legs together. Glue was every where and also deep into the joints. I'm just not skilled enough.
I hope you find something else. You can do this
I watched ep 1 on my TV and wanted to note but it did not show up on my computer. So I am voting here... #1 😍
Love this
Such a lucky man you are to have acquired so many beautiful pieces.

Hi Barry best wishes from Scotland
Thank you Penelope
Scotland! Cool beans. 👍
OMG Barry, at the beginning I thought you were getting ready to fix a baby bottle LOL. I love your work no matter what it is.
This made me laugh
Nice job Barry. I have a set of these as well which I need to get back to restoring. They were painted the god awful turquoise.
I agree with one of the previous commenters the difference in contrast between the two woods should be a lot more subtle.
But it's a matter of taste if you restoring them. I also like the sharp contrast but the purees will use more muted shade between the two woods so there's not as much contrast.
Just a matter of taste at that point.
Looking forward to the other restorations on the lane furniture pieces. 👍
Excellent feedback. I've actually refinished several others much darker for the reasons you mentioned. I wanted to try several different finishes to truly appreciate the ones I am most drawn to
Happy 😊 Happy 😊 Happy 😊 about this!
Awesome!
I think I mentioned it here when I bought ita month or so ago. I bought a 1967 Lane sweetheart chest and inside it had a brochure still hanging from a string inside. It listed the various Lane product lines including the Acclaim line. I don't know how to post pictures; I put a really quick video on my channel.
It seems like if you can upload a video I should be able to upload a picture but it doesn't seem to work.
Maybe try the community page. I'd love to see the brochures
a series you say? yay!

We had some of this furniture when I was growing up but I never knew what it was called. I didn’t like the step tables then and I still don’t; I think they’re a pain. We used one for the telephone table.
Not my favorites either
