      This is such a strange argument that I keep seeing now. The idea that being around people making edgy jokes is some sort of gateway drug into white nationalism holds no real weight. Using this same logic You could argue that South Park a show on prime time national television for the past 23 years with all it's jew jokes created a whole generation of genuinely anti-Semitic kids who just didn't understand it's a joke. The fact is the vast majority of people who become alt-right do so because they are convinced by arguments not because they heard a jew joke.

    I've been following Dank for a number of years and his fundamental take on freedom of speech is that you should be able to say whatever you want without being LEGALLY punished for it. There are a few exceptions in regards to incitements to violence and forms of expression that infringe on children's innocence (among other exceptions). As someone who is very familiar with Dank it seems absurd that people actually believe that he's a fascist, nazi or a white supremacist. The beliefs he's preached for years clash so hard with nazism and white supremacy.

      Some of the jokes are bad taste, such as the first one Vaush noted, but a lot of his stuff is legitimately, curl over belly laughing, hilarious as well, and seeing things like his very compassionate interview with Chris-Chan, his sympathy for individuals noted in his mad lad stories suggest to me he's not some evil guy to me.
      You can argue he is a bit naive, maybe, but I don't get genuine racist vibes from him, he seems to just be a genuine libertarian.

      @@Canadish What does it mean to have a "Bad faith" joke though? A joke at the expense of another person? That's just a joke. Vaush in this debate literally conceded that you should be allowed to joke about anybody or anything because that's what comedy is about.

    • @Canadish
      @Canadish 9 місяців тому

      @@shmockette7158 Well hang on there, I said bad taste, which is different to bad faith.
      Bad taste is generally crass or crosses a threshold where a joke tips more into unkind or uncomfortable than actually being funny at all.
      The best comedians can run it right up to the line, make you THINK they are about to tip over, then subvert your expectations by pivoting around etc.
      What I was saying is, Dank someone trips over himself and falls over the line, though I specifically think he does so in good faith.
      Bad faith, is generally something you run into more during debate, when someone isn't really engaging with your point or coming in with a different agenda than to discuss the point (they are just promoting themselves etc) and usually unwilling to even entertain the idea of changing their perspective if shown to be wrong etc.
      In a joke context, I suppose it would be like making a racist or misogyny joke, just to say racist and misogynistic things without any proper humour behind it.

His logic reminds me of someone who would still think of themselves as a "liberal" without realizing that they're being brainwashed by the right. If he can make the realization that certain behaviours can enable fascism/white supremacy without the person even realizing or the ripple effect that systemic bigotry uses to perpetuate itself, I reckon that it would be possible to win him over. Yeah, attachment too. Asking someone if they are a racists is merely to enquire as to their BELIEF about what label they use to call themselves, and as with beliefs, they dont need (but the good ones do) any basis in reality or evidence.
      The strategy of defence is the same: see r/choosingbeggars or the Kubler Ross model. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance, except some dont ever get there, but go back to DENIAL. It is comfortable after all, and acceptance comes with the heavy price of responsibility. Denial does not.

As defensive walls go, it's pretty terrible due to it's pitiful height - it was clearly intended to be manned, which you wouldn't do if it was to just "Keep them out.", You'd build it tall. Both Vaush and Dankula allow extremely racist people on their social media, but when Vaush allows it, he denounces them and debates against them. Dankula doesnt do that. Even if we assume that Dankula is never serious with the stuff he posts, he's still in the wrong because he's allowing racists to spread hate and not trying to debate them. Here's a simpler example. If someone watches someone else get murdered and they do nothing to try to stop it, they don't physically try to stop the killer, or even call for help or 911, the guilt of that person's death is on them as well. Inaction can show a person's beliefs just as much as actions do. Yes, the racists commenting on Dankula's pics are the problem but so is Dankula. That is promoting white supremacy. And the only people who promote white supremacy are white supremacists. Whether you genuinely believe in white supremacy doesn't matter if you're still spreading it. You've already become a mouthpiece for the ideology, and thus are a white supremacist. Karl-Erik Vik UKIP is a political party that used to be led by Nigel Farage that has been around for years and just won’t seem to go away. Anti-immigration, anti EU. Basically popularised/pressured the idea of an EU referendum in the public eye. Sargon and Dank (and I think(?) Paul Joseph Watson) basically joined the party to be edgy, probably thinking it would “trigger the SJWs”, except no one actually gave a shit and instead Sargon spent about a month during the general election embarrassing himself as he fought off criticism for saying he “wouldn’t even rape” Jess Phillips. He also basically proved that he isn’t the political big brain he thinks he is, because when he wasn’t dealing with the Jess Phillips criticism, he failed to answer even simple questions on his positions. UKIP was on life support before that, fuck knows where Sargon’s involvement got them.

He constantly bounces back and forth between useless tautologies and vague definitions, and more daring definitions of the same words to weasel his way out of having his own standards applied to him (see the Molyneux debate). I obviously can't know what he ACTUALLY believes. But, I'm pretty certain he isn't a nazi or a white supremacist. He's actively denounced and argued against people like that. I think he's genuinely a free speech advocate who will surround himself with people who agree with that. Kind of an "enemy of enemy..." thing. He's no debater, clearly. The closest political affiliation you could put him in is Libertarian Centrism as far as I've been able to deduce. I'm very left leaning, but do not believe he has any ill intent. Frankie Boyle's comedy is so much more nuanced than "what if I said a racist/sexist thing and then chuckled hehe". Of course he relies heavily on shock value but there are also genuine set-ups, and he uses well-established comedy devices like subverting expectations and absurdist imagery. It's clear from the context and the way he tells his jokes that they're almost never a sincere reflection of his beliefs. Also when saying offensive things ironically he draws from a wide pool of bigoted beliefs to satirise, rather than drawing exclusively from Nazi shit like Dankula does.
      From what I've seen Dankula's prepared standup shows are a lot better written, and work fine for a middle-of-the-road 'offensive' comedian. It's just the stuff he says on Twitter and in Internet videos that fail to land, because they're basically just racist shit devoid of context.

Right now it might seem like they are all united against people of color but once that's settled, it's English against Celts, Germans against Slavs. At some point Italians were not considered "white" to the anglo americans and many Germans think Scandinavians are not "white" but "yellowish".

Free Speech only protects you from being prosecuted by the government for subversive speech (there are limits of course, the old "yelling fire in a crowded theater" example comes to mind). Privately-owned platforms (Facebook, Twitter, UA-cam, etc) fully reserve the right to moderate your speech within their networks as they see fit. Simply asking the man to elaborate on his beliefs is far more useful than making points about his character based on the actions of other individuals.

      @@xilon56 That sounds reasonable, but I strongly disagree. I think making points about a person's character based on their actions in comparison to other individuals is generally better than simply asking the person to elaborate on their beliefs, especially if their elaboration doesn't add up (actions speak louder than words, after all). Of course, we ideally want both, which was the entire purpose of this conversation. But if we had to choose just one, I think it's naive to favor a person's word over their broader body of content.

    • @justinlacek1481
      @justinlacek1481 4 роки тому +1

      @@xilon56 Did you understand my comment? Because it seems like you didn't, at all. You're literally arguing in support of my point - that you can't deduce someone's beliefs, especially by purely asking them, and so you have to rely on external evidence, reasons, experiences, events, their history and so on, rather than just purely asking them. That's *what anyone does when they want to find out the personality and character traits of a person without having to rely solely on their word* . Again, the hiring manager wants the interviewee to bring a resume for a reason.
      Also, you can reasonably tease out someone's character traits by looking at their personal history, actions, etc. That's *how you figure out what characteristics a person has* - through empirical observation. Arguing otherwise would make it impossible to do, for example, biographies. Obviously, you can't prove it in the same way I can construct a first-order logic proof, but you can give enough evidence and reasons to the point where someone arguing contrary would have the burden of proof on their shoulders. By your idea, we wouldn't be able to say anything about what type of person MLK was because he's not around for us to ask. We wouldn't be able to say that Julius Caesar was ambitious.
      And "... based on the actions of others." I'm pretty sure this discussion revolved around the actions of Dankula, and it's ignorant to hand wave other people's behaviors in relation to Dankula just because they're other people. That's fallacious, in fact; if I see where some specific car mechanic is consistently getting negative reviews, I'm going to infer that the mechanic might not be the best guy to work on my motorcycle. You might infer otherwise, but I'm not and I'm perfectly reasonable not to.
