Shanti Bhavan Student Visali Rajaram Accepts Women of the Year Award

At Glamour's 2014 Women of the Year Award in New York City, Shanti Bhavan 8th grader Visali Rajaram was honored along with nine other young women from around the world who are fighting for a good education through extreme adversity. Visali spoke for all the girls present, and girls around the world when she accepted the award on their behalf.

Visali Rajaram is thirteen years old, born into an “untouchable family” in South India. She is her family’s only hope to end generations of poverty and social indignity. Her father was a farm laborer until recently when he began work for a merchant in a tea shop. Her mother stays home to look after her two brothers. When Visali returns home during school holidays, she is surprised and sad to find that her home is a hard place to live in. In school she gets along well with other children and deeply values her friendships. Her favorite subject is biology because she wants to learn more about the human body. Visali dreams of becoming a doctor one day. “Some people cannot afford medical services,” Visali explains, “so I want to care for poor people when they get sick.” Visali loves to dance in Bollywood and Hollywood styles, and enjoys reading classics and playing basketball and soccer.

This means a bride was burned every 90 minutes, or dowry issues cause 1.4 deaths per year per 100,000 women in India.
