Portable Monitors. Any good?

- A test of a portable monitor. Handy for dual-screen laptop use, a stow-able TV (when paired with a HDMI source) or a compact gaming screen - especially when it comes to the Nintendo Switch which can output to it in 1080p over USB-C. It's definitely not perfect though.
Here are some links to the one I bought - look out for deals and vouchers and also have a look through the alternatives that show up - It's almost certain this is not the best one available.

No I haven’t got the stand the wrong way around
Yes it shows it like this in the manual - there’s pictures and everything.
No it won’t fit any other way (notice that the bottom rear of the screen is wider than the top and also isn’t magnetic - therefore the cover can’t be flipped over or orientated in any other configuration)
Don’t believe me? - buy one, you’ll find out.

Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons / techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. That isn't even close to what Chinese comrades do to Russian language if they aren't wise enough to hire even a half-bad Russian proofreader (although recently I encountered a perfect user manual for a flashlight from AliExpress, in four languages: my native Russian, my almost native (32 years out of 40) English, and also German, and Japanese (of the latter two I have some vague idea) - and not only it is written and edited by a very good editor, it is also designed rather sensibly, considering all the intricacies of proper Russian typography (and that, among everything else I do for living or as a hobby, is my field of expertise for more than 20 years). I found NOTHING to complain about except some really minor stuff that would be forgivable even in an originally Russian manual for an original Russian and Russian-made product or device.
Also, for Chinese, all Latin, Cyrillic, Amharic, Arabic, etc. symbols look pretty much like Chinese writing looks to us Westerners, and an average Chinese can hardly tell a from e, let alone i from L (so those NOKLA phones, - one of which has a place in Shenzhen Museum, one of many very fine tourist attractions of that great city, - were probably not only an evasion of trademark lawsuits, but also a product of such nonchalance).
More pepper to your salt: ten years ago at Shenzhen Zoo, tiger and lion territory, they had posters with sayings and proverbs about tigers and lions. In Simplified Chinese, of course, but also in pinyin (transliteration - that could have been modern Chinese writing if a relevant decision would have been taken during the Cultural Revolution, like it happened in Vietnam during French occupation, or in Turkey after the Republican revolution of 1923, when Turkey abandoned the old Arabic-based Osman writing). What's the reason to have posters in pinyin, I wondered, as pinyin is a thing much less relevant for an average Chinese (especially Chinese kids) than Latin script or even English for an average Russian at, say, Novosibirsk or Perm zoo? The answer, in all seriousness, was that “it's for foreigners, they use Latin script, so they should understand what's written there”. So, even in the fourth most important (after Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou) Chinese city, at a major tourist attraction (Shenzhen Zoo is excellent, you have my word, and I've seen many a zoo), the designer had very little clue that not all foreigners can read any Latin. Probably the difference between transliteration and translation got, well, lost in translation...

Regarding the washed out colors, the screen might be advertising it's self to the connected device as an HDR display(when it really isn't). Turning off HDR on the source device and/or on the screen might help. I have a portable screen and sometimes had washed out color when trying to show HDR content, which is ironic.
This ^ I noticed the Amazon listing had an HDR logo on the screen in the picture. I was thinking just what you said.

Also worth trying is Manuel color space 0-255 (Full RGB) because the laptop can be detecting it as HDTV instead of monitor (blame HDMI), it may even have such setting in the onboard menu.

I purchased the ASUS ZenScreen Touch MB16AMT recently to go with my ZenBook Duo. Thankfully I was able it on Amazon because it was sold out at pretty much every other US retailer including my local MicroCenter. Literally none available in the US, they’re still waiting on more to ship from China or Taiwan (I don’t remember where they are manufactured).
I must say, it’s wonderful. 15.6” IPS 1080P display with multiple viewing modes, DisplayPort and power via the USB-C port, Micro HDMI for devices that don’t have USB-C, an internal battery, 3 input modes for the Type C (phone, PC with charging the display, PC without charging the display), aluminum body, magnetic folding cover/stand (like the ones he showed that stick out the front), and adequate speakers as well. NOT TO MENTION THEY INCLUDE A 2 foot (0.6m) type c cable, and a 3 foot (0.9m) HDMI to Micro HDMI cable, and a type C to Type A adapter so you can plug it into a full-power USB3.0 port on a pc or into the AC wall adapter they provide.
My only complaints about it are that the “joystick” control for the monitor menu is subpar compared to the build quality, and that the manual says nothing about the fact that there’s a “no charging” mode for the type C, so I was surprised that it wasn’t charging from my thunderbolt 4 port at first. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t make the AC adapter have a USB C port instead of the type A, they wouldn’t need to include the C to A adapter then
Overall, getting it refurbished for $300 US was a great deal in my opinion, but I would have been happy to pay the full 350 for it new.
I wouldn't be surprised if UA-cam gave you a strike for playing a clip of your own video.
:’) This is a royalty free song so hopefully not. But you never know with UA-cam.
I use a 13” version, connected to my laptop by a long HDMI cable, to watch DVDs in bed.
More comfortable to balance / handhold than the laptop. 🙂
My laptop is a beast!
Something like these portable displays or even the 4K Sony Xperia Pro (which would also be my phone, which still doesn't justify its $2000+ price) would be doable compared to my chunck large display 7lb gaming laptop. Still I'd probably rather use my legal right to copy a DVD and play that on my phone. To be fair I don't watch many Hollywood style movies and usually just watch free video content off YT (like these videos) anyway so I'd ultimately have no use for this today.
Still its neat to know niche devices like these exist and that ultralow TDP is very sexy (to a weird guy who is more focused on efficiency than raw power)!
Too much screentime for you. Turn that off and get to sleep! 😡
would be handy if of it was dustproof and had it water proof rating also for places you wouldn't want to take, use or put into? :-)
@@VariantAEC yeah, a home media server and ripping your discs is a great way to go. You can watch it on any of your devices, and move between them without losing your place. A lesser-used feature allows you to rip high bitrate larger files and then if your wifi or mobile data or CPU is too flaky for that bandwidth it can re-encode the video in real time up to the maximum your device can support. So it’ll look a lot better than regular streaming too. (This applies for pretty much all the home media servers, Plex, Emby, or other FOSS alternatives.)
Ever try one of those 20 some dollar projectors?
I bought nearly the same screen around the same time when they had that additional discount. I got the one with the different case/stand design. It does work better than the way this one looks. But I think many phone/tablet stands would work well for that. That brightness/volume toggle got me for a bit as well, but it's a good solution for the controls they used. And I think it's pretty good as well. The sound works for my purposes and the image quality looks good to me.

And it's almost the same price
Well the dock is basically just a USB-C to HDMI adapter with charging input.
It's not really a trick if it replicates exactly what the same thing as the Switch dock is doing.
But yes, it is still interesting none the less.
"Si, señor Fawlty!" Manuel on Fawlty Towers - sorry - couldn't help myself!

5 seconds response time? I guess the amazon listing probably meant 5ms XD
Portable traditionally means it has a battery, none of the 'portable' screens I found (researching over 150 different models) had batteries. However the really cheap screen I brought was still very good. I can plug it in to the USB-C port of my identical size (15 inch) surface tablet/laptop. It does mean I can use it on holiday or when I am away from home any time. No noticeable RF noise (important to me as a radio ham). Audio is adequate but not amazing, but doesn't distort even when I use a software audio booster. The stand is ok, uses 4 thumb screws to hold the stand/ cover on, uses standard VESA spacing so it can be mounted to a wall mount or multi-monitor stand, or to screw a Raspberry Pi to the back in a suitable case. Thinking of getting another for this purpose, the touchscreen version was only another £35 and using with a R-Pi sounds like a great idea.
A good review, thank you. I have had something like this in mind for setting up AV receivers and other such things. Using them for audio only away from a TV is a real pain so a HDMI screen, no matter how bad so the settings can be seen easily is a boon. As an example, a pioneer DVD player I want to use the digital audio outputs, BUT, it is set for HDMI and will only send audio out of the optical audio once it has connected via HDMI as set, fixing is much easier without having to drag the thing to a TV, now it's easy to take the screen to the device. Of course once set to SCART only again... So wonder in any do composite and HDMI.
Hey, your Videos are very cool. I've subbed for at least one year now and I never regretted it. Your topics are kind of random but still the Videos are always awesome. Just wanted to say thanks for your effort.
Greatings from Germany
i have had one of these for a couple years, branded as a WIMAX. Same volume switch and everything. Its super handy to have for pc building or testing builds to just throw it on and boot it up.
I've been using an Asus Zen Screen at work for a couple of years, great bit of kit.
It’s probably just overstock laptop displays thrown into a casing. Notice how the screen size is oddly familiar?
Great observation! Makes a ton of sense.
I mean yes, but no.
The LCD panels are manufactured by a component company and sold to integrators. Integrators include people who make TVs, monitors, laptops, HMIs...sometimes the manufacturer and integrator are the same company, but usually not. Of course the integrators can ask for special changes and stuff, but they aren't usually redesigning the component from scratch.
For reasons I hope are obvious, the vast majority of these screens are 16:9. It's what most people want, so it's far and away what is most available in monitor/TV appropriate sizes.
As far as actual size of the screen, the component manufacturers make standard sizes and they are only going to make something different if the client pays enough for it. It's easier as an integrator to pick a standard panel size and design for that rather than pay extra for something weird.
So, there isn't really any need for an "overstock" theory. Somebody says "I want to manufacturer a small television", so they go to a LCD panel manufacturer and say "what sizes you got?". Then they design the TV around those sizes. No conspiracy.
@@nintendoeats Agreed. It's much cheaper and more profitable to slap a common display/driver board/backlight board combo together, add your input sourcing/decoding, power supplies, and any other features from readily-available off-the-shelf boards.
As an added plus, a device can be sold as "Assembled from [whatever regulatory authority]-Compliant Parts," meaning it can _kinda-sorta_ pass those regulations without the expense and testing required of a wholly-new device.
I wish these companies would get back to making 16:10 ratio displays.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 Funny you should mention it! I had written a sentence about the death of 16:10, but I decided it was distracting from my point.
I too prefer 16:10. I kind of want to move to 1440p, but I have three 16:10 monitors and I'd rather not give that up.
2:30 The other displays are exactly the same, you just flip the screen over and attach the stand "backwards"

I went through seven different portable monitors last year in an attempt to find the best one. A lot of them are all knock-offs of each other, but some have better screen cover/stands than others- one brand had magnets so weak that it would just fall off the stand. There are some with hinges built into the back now as well, but the covers aren't as good or aren't included. I settled on one that had more saturated colors, but a very good picture and a cover/stand that actually works. Has no branding on the front which is a plus. Not going to mention the name, but I checked Amazon and they no longer sell this monitor. The company instead now sells pricier, branded monitors that are 4K and/or 144hz a much higher cost.

6:45 I would recommend against docking the switch to this monitor in this way. Back around launch 3rd party dongles and docks were found to be bricking consoles, because the standard Nintendo uses is somehow different than standard USB-C. I don't know if this was ever fixed, either on Nintendo's end or on 3rd party accessory manufacturers' ends, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for telling us about this product category.

I think UA-cam is reading my mind now I was just thinking about getting something like this for a project and this came in my feed good timing
The Chromecast addition would make it a nice self-contained media streamer to take in the garden, bath etc.
I didn't know that about the switch! Here I thought the dock was absolutely required for TV out
The dock is really just a pass-through, and as long as you can use an adapter that will deliver enough power, you can get it to output. BUT BEWARE! Do some quick research on third-party docks, and you'll find that using anything other than Nintendo's own dock can risk bricking your Switch, and losing any save data that's not backed up with the Nintendo Switch Online service!
Basically, Nintendo had the bright idea to make the Switch request really wonky power levels that do not follow USB-C standards. And non-Nintendo power cables or docks that aren't developed specifically for Switch with a certain capacitor or something like that can overload the console and kill it.
TL:DR - For your console's safety, don't dock your Switch with anything other than an official Nintendo dock!
It's interesting how it can get video output from the Switch even before getting into ''docked'' 1080p mode.
A user Manuel sounds great! No reading stuff, Manuel can just tell you how it works!

since the early days of the Switch users reported that it was possible to use a USB-C hub to bypass the dock. However few (cheap) hub models bricked some Switch'es so I guess even people aware of it don't wanna try. IIRC it may have been fixed by Nintendo in a FW update though.
@@20cent I don't think Nintendo have fixed it, and I don't think they can.
It happens because the Switch doesn't correctly comply to the USB Power Delivery protocol, and some external devices cannot handle the frequent and unpredictable changes in wattage that the Switch asks for, which damages the Switch.
I don't think that's something that can be changed without a hardware redesign.
Could also be used as a monitor with a camcorder or DSLR via HDMI out. Good for setting lights, and providing a monitor for a client to view while filming. Probably best indoors.
I always wondered why we didn't get ultra-portable laptop screen ports.
Purchased a very similar one as a second monitor to my MacBook for my Corona home office needs.
I connected mine with HDMI plus USB to the mac for power supply. (Older Mac, none of the latest USB C - only models - luckily).
Okay, 2 cables from monitor to the Mac, but sill only the Mac power supply and it even works from the Mac's Battery for quite some time.
Works quite well for me.
that music started and all I could think was "aww... my pkcell" lol
"User Manuel". Brilliant!
I bet that would work well with a raspberry pi400.
build it into a laptop with a powerbank
I've used a similar monitor with the pi400 and a powerbank to use it in living room and it worked great. I don't have the skills or desire to try coupling it all together laptop fashion but technically it would work fine.
@@jjk-9 bang for buck, these are great devices.
When my all in one pc (used as a plex media server) packs up, I will buy a pi and set that up as a low power server
I have a somewhat similar screen that I keep around as a ‘just in case’ device for the headless PCs and pi’s I have around the house. I don’t use it often, but when I do use it, it’s a total lifesaver.
Bought one of these based on your recommendation, it’s actually extremely good. I paid about $135 total and it’s great for use in the car.
5:17 But how do both of these sound compared to Sennheiser HD 600's?
Shithouse, most definitely.
I got one from uperfect that I've been using for years. It served me quite well. The only thing a bit iffy given the fact that power isn't always available in public I noticed that I do need a battery for it.
These are very good for programming on the go as you can use one screen for your IDE/editor and one screen for testing.
I bought one a few years ago. I use it primarily for travel to play Switch or Xbox Series S. Mine will play Switch without a dock, which is nice. I will also drag it down to a Raspberry Pi or other computer that is normally headless if I need to put a monitor on it for a bit to fix something. I agree about the speakers - I tend to use headphones from it. Overall: It's far from a perfect device, but I've been very happy with my purchase. I need to set up a PiKVM for a better solution to this.
How is the refresh rate ? 60 hz ?
@@xCanuckfan16x Mine from two years ago is 60hz. I'm sure you can find ones these days that have a higher refresh rate.
