I don’t think you failed on the setup(s)! Love the concept. I’m always a big fan of making the most of what you have. That’s why 3 years ago I went from my 15” laptop to a iPad Air because I knew for my on the go tasks all i needed was my ipad and a keyboard case. I think eventually I’ll pair it with a macbook pro but for now my desktop is my desktop and my travel setup is my travel setup.
Gadgets are funny problems: although beginning 12 years ago, I had 2 laptops, a Compaq 15 inches and my MacBook Pro 13 inches, and use both at same time was difficult. Then, I had a Macbook + iPad mini, no dual monitor back then, but I made the great use from both of them, I needed the ipad mini to work in hospitals (reading and taking notes, sometimes also creating sideshows) Then it was a bye bye to Macbook, and only iPad mini+ iPad 10.2 inches with a keyboard and pen, to use as tablet/basic computer with a second monitor connected by Universal Clipboard and Airdrop... still great, I still useful. But now, due to the large amount of work it's an intel Macbook Pro with Touchbar + iPad 10.2 + iPhone PM: a wireless screen, iPhone Shortcuts, touchbar does its things being an limitless function keys and iPad means wireless to do discrete task screen while Macbook its at 70⁰ degrees stand.
1000x this. You can also get adapters that you can add on, and for my one portable display, I also have a 180 one so I can cable manage in the back more easily.
I had nearly this exact setup when I was working out of an Airbnb for a month, minus the external monitor. Loved the ergonomics and felt nearly as productive. Didn’t even think of having the iPad on the keyboard like that! That’s a great idea and I might be able to avoid carrying a second stand if I do that again.
I love this concept, and not just for travel. I need to work from home and have such a small desk fitting my laptop and a 15.6" usb display alongside it is a nightmare. Raising the laptop and positioning a screen over the keys is brilliant!
I agree. I own the exact same laptop stand plus I have a MOFT 2 in one MacBook case that doubles as a stand. I also have a Protoarc folding keyboard. This definitely has me thinking for a couple of upcoming trips. 🤔
I love this concept, and have a similar setup myself. I always travel with my 14" M1 Pro and an 8th gen iPad for a second screen. I think the larger external monitor is just a little too much. The iPad and the Macbook combo is great as is, and if you kept the second stand you have the option between two side by side monitors or the stacked as you had. As a side note, the stacked monitor setup is insane for 3DS and DS emulation for...less productive days.
I love the concept. I have modified this somewhat by using the MacBook and the iPad in the configuration you showed with no side external monitor. I have two different foldable keyboards. One that is a full keyboard with numeric keys and another without the numeric keys and a trackpad. Basically if I am traveling for several days or more, I use the full large set up with the stand, the MacBook, the iPad, a mouse and the full keyboard. If I am going light and only take an iPad, I will use the keyboard with the trackpad. Great video!
man i freakin love your videos. Im glad you keep pumping out more videos but the quality is still 🔥. I really feel like i'm watching through your eyes the way you shoot and edit your content. Please keep it up im enjoying it! PS i'd highly recommend getting away from that SanDisk SDD Xtreme. I have two of those (different storage sizes) and all of which eventually lost my data due to corruption. I loved their size and slimness but i can promise you they are not reliable. esp if you're putting precious footage on there. There's tons of articles including The Verge mentioning the same thing to me. Promise im not out to tank SanDisk, but hopefully i can save ya some future headaches. I've already switched off of those to a Samsung SSD. cheers
After the outbreak of full-scale hostilities in my country, I had to move around the country for a while and get used to working without an ultrawide monitor. A little later, there was shelling of the country's energy infrastructure and I had to forget about using a large monitor and all sorts of electronic gadgets again. At this point, I began to adapt to working in the laptop-only format. And you know what? I like it! After that, I sold almost everything that wouldn't fit in my backpack, and what I still needed and didn't fit in, I replaced with similar but more compact gadgets. For more than a year now, I've been working with just a 14-inch laptop and have no plans to return to a stationary setup.
what if you get a 2024 asus zenbook duo and add a triple monitor extender on top of it 4 screens. 2 of them is 3k each, 2 touch screen, 2 not....but come on I feel it would be great
you didnt fail, you did great! you found two good variants on the idea that fit each travel scenario pretty well. Work Away From Hype and Work FAR Away From Hype.
Ok the stand and the keeb with the ipad covering the MacBook keyboard is brilliant. I'm not going to carry and third monitor, but adding a laptop stand and a ergodox voyager to my travel setup seems doable
Speaking from experience, my portable setup is just in a humble laptop bag, but if I did use a backpack, I would carry my portable monitor, which offers an additional charging port. I also recently picked up a battery bank that offers 65W of power, which in a no outlet environment, would resolve that issue. That said... my Dell 5290 let's me use more than one external display and I refurbished it on the cheap (for work, I don't really need much, and I'd rather risk a cheaper laptop than risk the company provided one). I haven't tried low profile keyboards (the good ones), but I am curious.

It has everything I would need at any given moment, but its heavy and there is alot to pack and unpack everywhere I go. Maybe I dont need swiss army desk setup that can go anywhere. Maybe I need to better job at planning ahead!
My portable office in a bag: 12.9” iPad w/ Magic Keyboard and Pencil, iPad mini w/ Smart Cover Folio and Pencil, AT&T 5G hotspot device, Anker USB-C fast-charging power brick, Anker 7-in-1 USB-C hub, iPad 10.2” w/ Smart Keyboard if I need a third screen, and AirPods if I need to listen privately and.or need ANC. The only wires I have to deal with are the charge cables and that’s only if I run out of battery which is hardly.
lol I literally did this setup with mine a days ago and then this video appears. I have a 16 inch with an 18 inch screen and a 15 portable on the side. It is indeed the best setup.
I have a couple Nuphy keyboards, including the Air60 and Field75. Like you they are solid keyboards and get the job done. But they are only keyboards, and in the graphic driven world, that means some sort of mouse. Personally I skip the mouse for the on-board trackpad. I seem to be one of a limited set that like them over a mouse. Go figure. The external monitor is a great addition. I have two but use a magnetic stand unless I am tight for space. When I can, I will not use the laptop battery to drive the monitor but an external one. Something like the Sherpa, especially outside with a small solar set up gives me power all day.
Lying the ipad on the macbooks keyboard is neat! For me the perfect setup would be if you could attach the ipad securely to work even from a couch. Also if you could use ipad's screen as a touchpad and keyboard whenever you need it so you won't need to carry the external ones
I've tried this kind of setup before. Laptop and portable drawing tablet on the laptop keyboard. If there is anythigng to add on, it would be elevating the tablet a little bit to allow some heatflow from underneath the tablet. It could sting some heat when using the keyboard once the tablet is removed.
While I like the concept I think this is only ideal for going somewhere that has a designated desk space. I think the ideal thing to have in every situation is something like the xreal AR glasses. As far as screen real estate goes it’s the “Swiss army knife” like thing to carry especially with how compact it is. It still allows you to use your MacBooks integrated keyboard and mouse while having multiple augmented reality screens placed ergonomically.
Wow! That's a neat solution. I think there's a better way to raise the portable monitor (or iPad) to eye-level or even higher. You could use a tripod-based stand like the one Nomad Setups offers. In general, I think working with a an external display that is portable is a game-changer :)
Hi, thanks for the video) Why don't you use your external display on top of macbook and just add a better stand? no keyboard or second display would be needed.
This isn’t very portable. I mean, it kinda is, but I wouldn’t use it for a r/onebag setup. I have the Nuphy 75 and it just collects dust in a bin. It’s not very portable, ironically. Too bulky in length and width, at least compared to other options. I’d swap it for a K380 or Keys to Go 2 (came out a month ago, the 2nd version is an improvement imo). Ditch the large monitor; that’s just more bulk. Swap the mouse for a Pebble or Modern Mobile Mouse, no mods needed. And for your mic, use the Videomic Go 2, which is probably lighter than the dynamics you are using and I'd argue better sound.
I tried putting the iPad on the keys like this (I have a bigger laptop) and it pressed the keys and there’s no way to lock the keyboard like you said, unless you’re aware of something that I can’t find on google? Also, it got too hot! Maybe I need a case on the ipad to protect each device from heat.
1:02 | What monitor are you using? I use a Chromebook (HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook) & a Chromebox (ASUS Chromebox 5) as the main computers in my setup. In my opinion, my current setup is way better than any setup ever could be using any apple products.
A question! What portable table do you use and what portable chair you recommend? But seriously now, everything you are talking about assume that you have a table, and not just some table, but a good table, with comfortable height, clean surface, stable enough, large enough to place everything, and an adjustable chair to sit. In my experience, yes, you can expect the place you are staying at would have some kind of table and a chair. But more often than not, it will be just a plug to fill the space than a real working surface. That probably would depend on what class of accommodations you are paying for, but you still can't be sure. From my experience, more than 90% of rented rooms would have a narrow table tuck to the wall somewhere, so your feet will hit that wall when you try to sit comfortably. If they have some other table, most of the time it will be a round one, and not very large. Cool for having a coffee, but unusable for any kind of work. Finally, again most of the time the table will be about 75+ cm high, which is too high for typing, and the chair will not be adjustable either. The solution? I use my laptop while sitting on the sofa or bed. No external keyboard. No mouse, no additional displays, nothing that stick out of the laptop body, so you couldn't break it when moving to stand up or change your pose (and you'll need that, frequently). I may occasionally sit on a chair near the table, but that wouldn't be for more than one or two hours, otherwise my backbone starts to kill me. The only other things I take with me is my ipad and wifi hotspot (I often use my mobile for this, although it has some drawbacks). All chargers and wires included of course.
or get an adapter that has Displaylinks for more than 1 external monitor. You can have lots of external monitors with that. However your solution also works well and better in the woods... Thanks!
Have you heard of or seen the 5k Intehill screen? 👀 that’s the screen you need on the side 👌🏽I’m running a similar three-screen setup, have been for the past few months and it’s perfect
I don’t know why everyone talks about the one monitor limit. It’s not some insurmountable problem. I use an Mac Mini M1 with not one, not two, but two monitors plus a Kamvas 16 which is basically a third monitor that you can write on and if I really want to I can throw my ipad in the mix for a total of four. Yes, you need DisplayPort or DisplayLink adapters but it’s not like it’s impossible.
Regarding the issue of needing an iPad for sidecar. If you really don’t want to use it, there are alternatives. DisplayLink adapters provide a way to bypass the monitor limit via software hackery.
I already use the very same setup like you for around 3 years now, yup total 3 monitors. You have to find better tablet stand for your external USB C monitor for better support, find a metal one.
all you need is a laptop and one extra monitor. Just get good at quick switching screens. It's only a little slower than moving your eyeballs to another screen.
in college, i loved using sidecar with macos big sur. i got some real work done with two displays in very strange places and it made me very satisfied. you should try the microsoft arc mouse! its very compact and it made my portable setup perfect, though i was only using dual monitors.
I think that it's good to try this out, but yea the setup is a bit excessive. If you can work with it, maybe drop the external monitor and instead roll the ipad in portrait mode , that way you're not eating so much battery
I felt the "I keep trying to get out and they keep pulling me back in". Have been considering for a while getting an iPad to pack with my M1 Pro so I can have a simple multiscreen setup on the go, while also taking advantage of the touch screen. For now I've managed to postpone spending the €€€ in getting what would be my 5th Apple device....... but don't know for how long (help)
My go to for the last two years in my portable set up is the nreal light. It's a pair AR glasses that are really good as an external virtual screen. Now they are called xreal, and they just released the xreal air 2 pro, which are much better even though the fov is lower. I love these glasses because even if can't take my laptop, I just use them with my phone. Samsung has this mode called Dex that creates a simulation of a desktop on the phone. It works amazing with the glasses.
So when I travel abroad, I have a potent convertible 14' laptop, my ar glasses (which give me an extra screen), some good earbuds and (most of the time) a small portable midi controller.
If you're able to do your workflow on a windows pc, sounds like Lenovo's Yoga Book might be your ideal travel set up. Still compact like a laptop, but you get two big flexible dual screens, and a compact stand and keyboard to make it all work together ua-cam.com/video/gkiTWVDauV0/v-deo.html
Just think - if you weren't trapped in the Walled Garden™- there are so many real world versions of this you could just buy including a dual touch/pen screen laptop with a folding screen. Ah well.
Bruh I just found your vids today and I have so many identical quirks so you probably just have adult inattentive ADHD. Welcome to the family :🚀 lovely gear!
I have a proper portable monitor but honestly it's too extra to take when traveling. Just one laptop screen is honestly enough when you're not at your home PC and need to get things done.
5:24 there is no MacBook worthy of the pro label. My laptop handles 7 external 4K monitors plus the built in monitor. This is before I add my CSV-1477 USB-A to 2 DisplayPort connections.
6:15 interesting solution that inspired me to play around with this for my home office that has a large monitor on the left, 14” MBP on the right, elevated, and now testing iPad Pro 12.9” on the keyboard. Note: Apple does NOT recommend leaving anything on the keyboard - paper, notebook, nuphy keyboard, nor iPad. I do believe they utilize the keyboard area with the spacing between keys for releasing heat from the laptop chassis. So, I’m looking into what I can do to elevate the iPad off of the keyboard and create an air gap for proper ventilation. So far I found tiny felt pads used for hanging picture frames on walls but looking for a better solution - not interested in overheating my brand new MBP.
@@mitchell.foot1what I ended up doing was finding some silicon pads that are made for furniture or home accessories that need a bit of elevation and friction to stay steady on a surface and not slide around. Small and cheap and worked well enough. I stuck 3 together in a small stack for the top corners and 2 together at the bottom corners to give a better air gap between the iPad Pro and the keyboard area of the MBP. However, I didn’t want them directly stuck to my iPad so I found a very thin case for the iPad and stuck it to the case. However, that won’t necessarily travel well. I found a 7 inch cable to connect them instead of using wireless - which I think is worth considering since having devices throwing out wifi and Bluetooth so close together can create a lot of signal noise and reduce network performance. Overall I think about using 3D printing to create custom “feet” or supports that could clip onto each corner of the iPad and give an air gap. But the iPad I was using in this way died and Apple wouldn’t replace the battery - so I’m back to just using one iPad with my MBP when I work remote. At home I got an extra VESA arm from Viozon and a magnetic VESA adapter mount by MagFlott / CharJenPro for putting my iPad Pro below my main screen as a touch interface and set it up for mouse and keyboard control through my Mac - not as an extended screen to save on processing overhead and keep it truly parallel in terms of processing / apps / functions.
I know this is just for fun and is a good video, but for others needing more space like this, learn to use and be comfortable with virtual desktops, spaces, or whatever they are called on your os. These are the additional desktops you get when you 3/4 finger swipe left right on a mac.. I'm a game dev and full stack engineer, so I'm not stranger to needing a lot of space, but I find most issues can be solved by training yourself instead of buying new things, this is one of those. I guarantee most of you watching this and needing more space will be stunned how far you can get by simply utilizing built in multi desktop functionality on your os. ua-cam.com/video/y067glNHtuU/v-deo.html
Building a good portable setup hard T_T I find all of the portable monitors are too small which forces a setup like this. If only they had a foldable or rollable portable monitor
That's too much messing around with all the items for me. You can easily switch between 'desktops' with a few finger swipe gesture on a touchpad rather than have always on displays. I would rather buy 16" macbook and sell that small one.
Pressing alt-tab to switch app windows is more portable and power efficient than having to carry, unpack and connect all these devices Never worked with music or video editing though, so maybe it is justified
Bro maybe realise that you are never busy enough to really need 3 monitors XD Maybe use multiple virtuell desks on the macbook and switch to them. Its far cheaper and take less place when travelling!
Those HDMI and USB C connectors, in my opinion, are very poorly placed, in that way I mean the manufacturing, they should be behind to prevent the cables from twisting.

you need to put the portable monitor on the right. having the giant bezel between the screen and the macbook is hurting my eyes.
Or flip it so the cables come out of the top if they can fit.

it depends on him because he was the one using it 😂❤😂
You can do exactly the same with the Samsung ecosystem, for those who didn't ask, thank you for your attention!
I don’t think you failed on the setup(s)! Love the concept. I’m always a big fan of making the most of what you have. One suggestion for your portable monitor that you're using in portrait orientation. Right angle cables are your friend!

its a lot cheaper to buy a toothbrush while traveling then buy a new steamdeck

Came up with the same thing recently - tablet placed on laptop on stand as 2nd screen with touch
What's the model of the electric guitar hanging on the wall?
My setup is very similar but I’m lacking the iPad, use a roost stand and swap the Magic Mouse for the mx master
Hi, thanks for the video) Why don't you use your external display on top of macbook and just add a better stand? no keyboard or second display would be needed.

What back packs do you have ?
1:02 | What monitor are you using?
I use a Chromebook (HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook) & a Chromebox (ASUS Chromebox 5) as the main computers in my setup. In my opinion, my current setup is way better than any setup ever could be using any apple products.
the "The Chats" tshirt 😍😍
Probably one of these all-screen laptops would do a lot with decent weight limit, but the price is... hard to swallow.
or get an adapter that has Displaylinks for more than 1 external monitor. You can have lots of external monitors with that. However your solution also works well and better in the woods... Thanks!
Wanting a dual screen laptop setup so I might try copying your angled laptop tablet setup. Only outside the ecosystem.
Does the screen not get power and video via USB-C, thus negating the hub?
I already use the very same setup like you for around 3 years now, yup total 3 monitors. You have to find better tablet stand for your external USB C monitor for better support, find a metal one.
all you need is a laptop and one extra monitor. Just get good at quick switching screens. It's only a little slower than moving your eyeballs to another screen.
in college, i loved using sidecar with macos big sur. i got some real work done with two displays in very strange places and it made me very satisfied. you should try the microsoft arc mouse! its very compact and it made my portable setup perfect, though i was only using dual monitors.
forgot to mention my MOFT stand for the macbook, those things are awesome!
You should try the tripple monitor setup with xreal airs
You doing it the fest. Nice video
You should try the Espresso display
"Yes mom, I need it for homework"
Another fire video. Constantly inspiring me to
I have a portable monitor too, I just put it where the keyboard of the laptop is haha
All i use is a asus zenbook duo and then i already have a laptop that can turn into a whole dual screen setup
the chats band t, best part
I think that it's good to try this out, but yea the setup is a bit excessive. If you can work with it, maybe drop the external monitor and instead roll the ipad in portrait mode , that way you're not eating so much battery
I felt the "I keep trying to get out and they keep pulling me back in". Have been considering for a while getting an iPad to pack with my M1 Pro so I can have a simple multiscreen setup on the go, while also taking advantage of the touch screen.
For now I've managed to postpone spending the €€€ in getting what would be my 5th Apple device....... but don't know for how long (help)
Awesome setup
What is that chair and ottoman at beginning of video?
What is the wallpaper on your main monitor in this video?
i just find it funny that in the few thumbnails you show your face, you hide your face lol
i'm copying the ipad on the keyboard on my laptop setup. thanks! 👍
Your setup reminds me of that dual screen Lenovo laptop.
Zenbook Duo + Jsaux Flipgo is all you need.
"this is my M1 Macook.... The first thing im going to improve is..." The Operating system? No? *Leaves video*
Windows or bust, Mac is s***.
Linux is fine if you want to go hard
Just think - if you weren't trapped in the Walled Garden™- there are so many real world versions of this you could just buy including a dual touch/pen screen laptop with a folding screen.
Ah well.
I noticed in my company that the people with just a notebook who doesn’t care are mostly the most productive.
They just work. 🤷🏼
My portable set up is just my iPad and AirPods. Looking to get the magic keyboard or 3rd party best option for it.
Bruh I just found your vids today and I have so many identical quirks so you probably just have adult inattentive ADHD. Welcome to the family :🚀
lovely gear!
Use anywhere you say, id like to one up you and see it in a portapotty. 😂😂😂
what’s the song in the video?
Hey Rob, did you ever find a workaround for this?
Put the iPad next to your MacBook and it will automatically become a second screen. That’s all you need for a portable setup.
Pressing alt-tab to switch app windows is more portable and power efficient than having to carry, unpack and connect all these devices
Never worked with music or video editing though, so maybe it is justified
Dude … a toiletries bag. Keep a redundant version of everything in it. It’s always ready to go. You’ll never be without a toothbrush again.
I think just ditch the external monitor and use mac book with the ipad + keyboard and mouse...
Should be the productivity sweet spot
So tablet or LT and screen. The more you have the more you realize the less you need?
Just fyi, you can actually connect two monitors to m1 air using the displaylink-enabled hub. It's a workaround, but it works
Bro maybe realise that you are never busy enough to really need 3 monitors XD
Maybe use multiple virtuell desks on the macbook and switch to them. Its far cheaper and take less place when travelling!
One screen for a browser. One for my IDE one for discord, WhatsApp, other communication apps and one for Spotify/Netflix
Those HDMI and USB C connectors, in my opinion, are very poorly placed, in that way I mean the manufacturing, they should be behind to prevent the cables from twisting.
You should replace magic mouse with magic trackpad
Is called laptop, if you miss 40 years of innovation
At least you haven't dived into the world of SFFPCs...
Bruh just use a laptop, thats it.
I think you just need AR glasses like xreal air
Very god idea!
z13 flow and x13 flow are made for this type of thing if anyones actually looking to have a portable setup thats not dogshit
Yoga book 9i.. dual screens🤔
