The real story of drug addiction that Arnab Goswami didn’t tell you | TV Newsance Election Special

  • From chasing cars to banging desks, we’ve seen it all when it comes to TV news tamasha around ‘#drugs’ - whether it is picking apart #DeepikaPadukone’s “maal chats” or hounding #RheaChakraborty on her “drug preference”. But all those cringe telecasts from the past two years pale against real stories of addiction we picked up for the Assembly Election 2022 coverage in Punjab.
While TV news only ever used the subject as a distraction technique, drug abuse and addiction were real issues on ground as Punjab went to polls this month. We spoke to a young man and his father at a government de-addiction centre, struggling with heroin use. Punjab's drug abuse problem is much-talked about.
We meet Dr Bhatia, founder of a Neuropsychiatrist Hospital in Amritsar and some of his patients who were recovering from different kinds of dependencies. Dr Bhatia spoke about how detrimental humiliation and shame can be for victims of addiction, and how the media contributes to the social stigmatisation of drug abuse.

Manisha, this is one of the few episodes, outside Ravish Kumar's Prime Time, that not only I liked but felt it like a public service, a contribution to address an ill of the society and destigmatize it. Addiction is very difficult to treat and requires the participation of all stakeholders and a lot of emotional support.

Sadly, addiction is no respecter of caste or religion. In one week some 20 years ago we lost 3 young people belonging to the 3 major religions of India.
You’re right, we need to talk about the problem more loudly and frequently; in one state the de addiction centres are attached to police stations 😩. How cruel is that? Medical Council needs to include Addiction Medicine as an intensive course: this disease affects rich and poor equally and RUINS THEM

This type of report is what we expect from every media. It would be better if these reports also available in TV & newspapers too.

Bahut hi badhiya report. Must be seen by everyone. It is totally relatable. Kisi bhi addiction se sirf ek addict hi nai uska pura ghar Suffer karta hai.

I was once an edict. Daily 4 joints. After few months I stopped feeling the effect of weed as I was always high, home, at work, in sleep, even getting up in the morning I used to get up being high. So one fine day I thought what is the point when I am not feeling that high anymore which I got during smoking up first time? It’s been more than 2 years since I have smoked my last joint. First few weeks, there were withdrawal symptoms but focusing on other tasks/things was all I needed. So my next J will give me first J wala high. Hopefully.

This is really award winning Episode, gives great insight about true issue.. I congratulate to the team for the efforts and real understanding about issues and bringing it up. While bollywood, regional movies all showcase it, media, politician all are blind to it. During pandemic sale of liquour was very important for economy and was given much priority for sale.. Such is the irony.

Another short comment: we need to stop mocking the alcoholics and addicts as Bewra and Charsi--that doesn’t aid their recovery. Compassion and sympathy is needed

I once saw real life drug/family/police problem unfolding in front of my eyes in a single night in zirakpur😶 drugs in punjab is most brutal coz it brings down mostly wrestler looking boys. 6 feet or over height with 150 kg weight sticking needles at every part of body. You watch them and dread why those guys be doing this.
