I love Japan and living here
People say ”many Japanese commit suicide, work to death”, but the data was in the middle of 90s, outdated information
Indeed, low salary, low birthrate, earthquake or other disaster, but we don't have racism like in US or in Europe, we have the safest society where children can go to school alone, and we have high-quality health insurance
No country in the world without any faults

Can't you see ”like in US or in Europe”? Of course some bully but there are some kinds of
discrimination against women, race, the handicapped in any society
If you talk about such personal issue, I'll say the mixed(Japanese and American, Japanese and Kenyan) who I know were center of students attention at school

Because it is an island country, Countries are not connected by land.
Therefore, discrimination may occur because people are wary of the appearance of non-Japanese people.
Land mammals, regardless of race, first judge things visually, I think there are some things that can't be helped due to location.
Or rather, I think that kind of thing exists in every country.

As a Japanese person who lived in Europe, I initially thought that Japan was unique in terms of overtime and overwork, given the country's high profile regarding "karoshi" (death from overwork). However, Japan ranks 19th in the world for average working hours, behind countries like South Korea (3rd) and the United States (13th).
Japan's fundamental issue is not merely the number of hours worked, but the cultural and systemic problem where employees work until they physically break down or even die. This deep-seated issue goes beyond statistics and reflects a work culture that demands extreme dedication often at the cost of health and life.

That's because japanese companies routinely lie on their timesheets, reporting that a worker did 40 hours when in reality they worked 50, 60 or 70+ hours. If you look at anonymous surveys Japan ranks just as high as Korea or America in being overworked.

    annual working hours
    ・Japan 1607 hours
    ・America 1811 hours
Working hours in America are already longer than in Japan.
Furthermore, due to the effects of severe inflation, 50% of Americans in their 20s are doing side jobs to make a living, and if you include them, your working hours will be even longer (Japan's side job rate is 10%).
In Japan, you're less likely to lose your job because of the law, but in America, it's easy to lose your job.
I hear that there are some homeless people in America who have jobs.

    • @nolanholmberg311
      @nolanholmberg311 4 місяці тому

Yeah you are right. If Japan is a hyper-capitalist dystopia then america INVENTED the hypercapitalist dystopia. That much is very true. The thing is america will have time to figure out how to sort all these problems out. Japan is on a time crunch to get all this stuff fixed cause their population is in freefall. They really shot themselves in the foot by completely throwing out any ideas of making the immigration system better. It really is dumb that if you're any forginer of any nationality and you have a japanese girlfriend/boyfriend and you want to move back to Japan to settle down with them and get married it's pretty much impossible unless you give up and forfit your citizenship to your country of birth. Now if youre a forginer who is wanting to eventually go back home to visit your parents once in a while and will on the occasion want to take the kids back home to see grandma/grandpa well that would be impossible since you'd have to apply for a visa every time you wanted go back to your HOME. Not worth it.
This also applies to japanese citizens as well. Oh you're a prospecting young japanese man who is studying abroad in america? Great! Just make sure you don't get a girlfriend and fall in love. Cause if you get married to her here in america then youre never going back home. You see if you're a japanese citizen and you obtain citizenship of another country you HAVE TO FORFIT YOUR JAPANESE CITIZENSHIP. Japan makes it impossible for their own citizens to hold duel nationalities. And so in this hypothetical young japanese man in college gets married to his american girlfriend well now he just was automatically given american citizenship thanks to getting married to an american so now he has to have either his girlfriend give up her american citizenship to move to japan with him or he has to give up his japanese citizenship to live in america with his girlfriend. Either or it's a bad situation.

For those wondering why Japanese people work excessively, from my perspective as a Japanese person, the global perception of work as an undesirable task stems from Christianity's view of labor as a punishment for humanity. In contrast, Shintoism, the indigenous religion of Japan, holds that even deities work, which instills an unconscious cultural belief that work is a sacred act.
Consequently, Japan historically lacked a culture of taking breaks. Until 1876, when Japan adopted the Western concept of a Sunday rest day, there were no regular holidays apart from national celebrations.

Have you looked at the average working conditions in America? It's just as bad as Japan by any metric: hours worked per week (very high in both countries), vacation days taken per year (very low in both countries), union presence (technically higher in Japan, but they tend to cozy up to the bosses instead of working for the workers). Both countries have a high number of part-time workers who end up doing the job of full-time workers but get none of the benefits. America does have the advantage of much higher salaries, while Japan has much more affordable healthcare. In the end work in both countries suck unless you're self-employed or you're a CEO.

Many European countries have laws, in which you are forced to take your paid vacation, working over hours is paid so much more as dictated by law, that it discourages companies from letting their employees stay at work for too long, even if those want to stay longer to get a that extra pay. The Japanese government could do the same, instead they are like "please, everyone, take your vacation!" Make it mandatory!

I think the most common opinion you will see foreigners have of how to fix major Japanese societal issues like the declining birthrate would be immigration. It fixes the labor shortage issue, the birthrate issue, and it will make the economy do much better. More people to pay taxes, buy goods from vendors, use services, make the economy better in every aspect.
I cannot speak for other countries but as an American we have all the factors necessary for us to be in the same situation japan is in. In fact our birthrates are declining as well (not at the same pace as japan but still noticeable) so why do we still have an increasing population and therefore an increasing economy? Because we actually allow people to come into the country and become citizens. Is our immigration system very flawed? Absolutely but it is much less strict than japan. And where our legal immigration system fails us we have a permanent underclass of undocumented migrants who the system failed and are willing to work for very low wages just to survive. It's like slavery but with a lot more steps. Think of it as wage slavery. This ensures that even though the American people may be suffering from the ineptitude of our government we dont have to worry about dying out as a country because we have a constant flow of new people coming in to help keep our completely messed up economy functioning.
Also If you were ever wondering, the reason food is so inexpensive in America is that we have undocumented migrants pick our crops for almost no money at all. When you have almost free labor it keeps the prices low.

@@ケンブリッジ検太 I understand and do not worry. I expect that when we speak in different languages, a lot of meaning is lost in the translation. You speak Japanese and I speak English, the translation will never be perfect. It's okay, I understand.
My understanding of Japanese society comes from my personal conversations with my friend 悠真くん. We went to University together. He was a transfer student.
I do not disagree with you about your analysis on the emphasis of social cohesion. I fear that's being used insidiously by entities such as 日本放送協会 and 自民党 to manufacture consent. If that phrase is foreign to you, that is because it is, Literally.
The phrase was coined by a respected Political Science professor ノーム・チョムスキー.
If you have the chance, I would recommend that you read his work マニュファクチャリング・コンセント マスメディアの政治経済学. It is a very profound book that I cannot recommend enough. If you can't find it in a local bookstore, it is available on Amazon
Let me explain what I mean by all of this.
There is no question that there has been an uptick in Foreigner's committing crime in Japan. And now they're recording themselves doing it, so it is much more easily available to see these crimes taking place. Crime is going up. However, crime has been going up everywhere across the world. It's an international problem, simply because the world is back open and everyone can go outside. Meaning more opportunities for criminals to commit crimes.
However, it is my belief that 日本放送協会 and 自民党 are working together to sensationalize this topic to distract the Japanese masses from the truth of the matter, which is that they are all being sold to their bosses and losing their freedom as humans. It's hard for me to properly convey my feelings since we have a language barrier, but hopefully Google does a decent job.
I hope there are no mistranslations that could potentially offend you. If there is, it's unintentional.

I was born and raised in Japan, and I like Japan because it's a safe place to live, but you won't understand the bad things about Japan until you live there.
Coming to sightsee and living there are completely different.
Japanese people may be thought of as disciplined people who maintain order, but this is true; if they do not maintain order, they will be attacked.
Japanese people rarely use violence, but they do engage in harassment that is difficult for those around them to understand.
Experiments on sneaky behavior also show that the Japanese are the sneakiest.
Of course it's good to follow rules, but there are many people who have their own rules and expect them to be taken for granted.
    this is so suffocating
This may not be a problem for people who are good at adapting to others, but for people who are not good at adapting, Japan will be a real struggle.
In particular, people with developmental disabilities living in Japan must accept the fate of constant criticism.

    the lack of money
Also, because most of young population is concentrating in major cities, there aren't enough educational institutions for their kids to enter and the place for them (especially for family) to live in those places.
