Dude you all freaking rock and i loved all of this! I love doing rim shots on the toms and make em sound like a canon. Shoot, on a clave or jazz song where i play really soft, ill actually roll my drumstick across the top rim of the snare (it has to be mic'ed up usually) to get a similar brush sound but almost like someone using a washboard. I love experimenting with the kit and sounds it can make - that's what we play for! Anytime anyone tells me my dyslexic wild kit is "wrong" or "im just being contrarian" - i basically look at them like they're just a lame as fuck dork that has the personality and creativity of single ply toilet paper. Keep it up boys!
Great video! I didn't know some people specifically "hate" rim shots on toms, but I like to use them quite often to get a bit more slap and cut out of the toms, especially with die cast hoops. What I also like in general, both on snares and toms, is that with some practice you can slightly change the angle of the stick to affect the ratio between head/rim contact to get the kind of sound you are going for. And of course, simply hitting the rim is a great percussive sound as well! In terms of toms detuning when hitting the rims, I can also highly recommend the TunerFish lug locks (the Tama tension locks should work well too), because they directly touch the rim, making detuning pretty much impossible no matter how hard you hit.
rim shots sound absolutely fantastic on cranked roto-toms. i recommend getting a six and an eight and continuing to turn them up until just before the head breaks itself under the pressure. great piercing marching percussion kinda sound.
What a fantastic episode. It’s this kind of attitude that just could (help) start a Musical creativity explosion, like we’ve been needing for decades. Excuse me for my strong opinions, but I’m probably not the only person who thinks, (no current events related pun intended)… current music could use a shot in the arm, to get things waxing a lot more creatively right now. Can’t start too soon. Show me the new stuff. Bring on the next big thing. Ok… I’m finished.
I've been playing for 50 years, and I can't imagine anyone contesting the content here. Although, I do recall a fellow drummer/student approach me after my senior recital, (many moons ago) to congratulate me, and after hearing my solo, he said that he had never heard anyone pitch bend before. This struck me as odd, as he was really into jazz, and there are many examples of this technique in jazz. To the folks in the heavier rock genres who think these techniques aren't for them, listen to Moby Dick. I think for many people, they get stuck by listening to their favorite genre exclusively. By listening to a broader range of music, you begin to hear sounds that you wouldn't otherwise hear. Also, exploration can lead you out from falling into a rut, and bring new life into your playing.
Hi, great video! Thank you! I was using rim-shots on toms when I tried to make them louder (due to very limited recording gear), it did help a bit. But most of all - exploring your instrument really pay off because you get a whole new set of skills you can put to good use everywhere. So yes: sticks, brooms, mallets, brushes, rim-shots, pitch-bending, ... :) :) :)
Another excellent video. As a completely self-taught drummer (until recent times, when I basically started from scratch), as soon as I found out how to do a rim shot on the snare, I figured it was worth using on any other drum as well. Thunderous single stroke rim shots across the toms was part of my solo back then. Now, I have no solo, but my playing is cleaner. Still use rim shots, though. I those little 6", 8", 10" RotoToms, and rim shots on those are ridiculous. In a good way. I was kind of afraid to use the rims with the brooms, but now I'm going to have to try it.
I’ve got a set of PDP maple classics with wood hoops. I’d be missing out on a large part of what that kit can offer if I didn’t do rimshots on the toms lol
The endless number of sounds you can get out of basic drumset is great. I think of using a open top hihat cymbal bell more. Small, pingy, cute little cowbelly vibe right there. Havent seen this really, even while specially searching for some examples.
Thanks Cody...very interesting. I've been doing rimshots on toms since ??? specially in latin music. One of my teachers (he was a classical percussionnist) told me not to do so but (as a "bad" student) I did.
Listening within the context of my current exploration, conga playing. but right off the bat there are multiple strokes for those drums...so why the hell not equivalent tap, accent, rimshot , center, and edge strokes for all drums? The gatekeeping, I tells ya!
@@The_Other_Ghost In case you weren't aware of him prior to Sepultura - here he was at just TWELVE yrs old - of course he continued to work and his technique and approach just became more and more concise and BRUTAL! CHEERS! ua-cam.com/video/QGKT7y9CgBc/v-deo.html
Some great ideas here! Have been doing the dbl stroke thing on toms and cymbals for some time... it never occurred to me to try the rimshot on the toms. I will now !
I knew a guy in music school who said Terry Bozzio's ostinato solos were "bullshit" because it wasn't the way everyone else plays the drums. From an orchestral perspective, the whole point of percussion is to create effects that aren't limited by/to the concepts of melody and harmony. Nothing should be off limits, as long as you're not damaging your instruments (or even if you are, if that's what you want to do). That said, I don't have the nerve to play cascara on my floor tom shell, regardless of finish style. Thank god for Gruv-X's X-Click Mundo.
Wow! I've been around to see my fair share of dogma, and I wasn't aware there were people who thought toms should only be played in one way (other than E-Drum designers), as if it were dictated on high by a celestial being and brought down to us mere mortals as the Truth. 🙄 I mean, that's the fun and cool thing about drums: You get so many sounds depending on how you hit it and what you hit it with. You don't even have to "hit' it to make a cool sound! I'd really like to see an "alternative techniques" video for getting other sounds out of the kit. For instance, there's the "thumb lick" where you make a fist with your thumb sticking out, lick your thumb, and push it across the head (usually tom and coated) to make a cool, soft pitch-bendy whooomp sound, or the eerie cymbal sound you can get if you touch the tip of a wooden-tip stick and go around the cymbal in circles. Stuff like that would make a cool video.
Hey Cody! Love The Drum Videos! Is there more Resonance mounting your 12” on The snare stand With the iso rubber mounts verses the pearl Tom arm isolation mount?
Hey Marty! Thanks for the kind words. We do find that there's more resonance from the tom in the snare basket with TrueVibe mounts than with the Pearl opti-mount system and it also allows for a bit more placement flexibility for our productions. Cheers! -Ben
Of COURSE you gotta use rimshots on the toms! There’s a whole bunch of beautiful sounds in there, just waiting to be brought out. Why would you NOT utilize all the great sounds your drums make?
So, I play drums as well as guitar and bass and I have never understood people that pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a instrument only to NOT use it to its full potential lol rules? No no, cool sounds

Totally agree. Whatever works.
Peart was keen on smacking rim shots on his pretty tightly tuned toms.

I agree, I play rimshots on my Tom's quite regularly. Not every hit, maybe not every song. But every time I sit down and just play, yeah, I do them.
this kinda thing is what brings about innovation . there is no right and wrong, i love it! great video guys!

Love this channel! Love the melodic potential from Tom tuning/technique. When composing it's a great place to start.
Concert toms sound particularly sweet when played with rimshots - Phil Collins definitely comes to mind
Excellent Episode!
The interludes in this video were really outstanding!

PDP concept maple with wood hoops really draw you into sound creativity. They are awesome drums. Thank you for your percussionist style.

Tom rim shots are flavorful and fun with S hoops and diecast
wait what IVe always used the rims on all my drums? Wow wasnt aware that was taboo, now I wanna do it even more lol, good video
I use tom rimshots often.
Awesome video I love the bamboo sticks
Thanks! Those are actually broom corn- just like traditional brooms.
Yes, yes and YES!!!
Rim shots on toms all day. Llng live Jjimmy Chamberlin

Rule #1 - sometimes, there are no rules‼️
You're not allowed to cool your expensive bronze cymbals down to -300 with liquid nitrogen and strike them as hard as you can. 🤣
Tell Roger Taylor (Queen, in case anyone here doesn’t know….doubtful) you can’t do rimshots on toms, ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Maybe people were thinking of unintentional tom rim shots?
The comments we’ve received were questioning why you’d ever want to play rimshots instead toms, stating that “that’s not a thing you do…”
Ah how to avoid unintentional.. :/
@@khalilsarwari1559 lol idk man some people are new and have bad tom angles, bad seating positions, or their accuracy may not be great
