I know this video's about the toms, but that song was gorgeous. Crashes are perfect, and the singer makes me think of Jon Davison x The Weeknd! Killin'.
Thanks so much! It’s sort of all about toms lol, but more so how to use those toms, along with the rest of the drum set, to help move a piece of music along and help tell the story of the song. That’s why I wanted to do another replaceme - to give drummers a way to practice and have fun with this stuff!

Excellent! I have a similar kit bought new in 1978, the Gretsch recording kit, w/two mounted toms and one floor tom; same finish, no bottom heads including kick drum. I preferred those blue Evans “hydraulic” heads or any oil-filled two-ply heads. It was the ‘70s. I needed that watery sound, and I was good to go for studio calls.
I always considered concert toms as a curiosity/gimmick, but here they sound really cool. Well played. Thumbs up!

I had no idea they made concert tom kits. I love the sound of concert toms, so much power and attack. You really went all out on this kit. The Hal Blaine vibes from this kit. The video from his kit from Don’s drum vault is worth a watch
Dude I am totally getting a karate kid tea ceremony vibe with the panflute intro. Which is totally appropriate for gated reverb. I have to say God bless your humor. When you popped the “in the air” shot into the unboxing section, I nearly shat myself. I feel ya on the concert tom thing. Being a man of few means I’ve been using the drum workshop steel concert toms in my D&B/Jungle set up. I usually play with wire brushes and I really love just that synthetic sound I can get out of them. There is just something about the purity of a single head, that shortness of the decay. I feel you man, much love to you brother

i love the way drums look... and personally, I love them so much that I will actually choose look over sound.. but, I love punch, attack and short sustain... but I do not like the look of not having a bottom head... Another great video though, such an immediate huge fan, thanks mate

The sounds you are getting from your concert toms is PHENOMINAL. What exactly are you doing to muffle them? I see what appears to be some rolled up duct tape on the heads, but I really don't know exactly how you muffle the heads. Please let me know how you accomplish it. Also, what kind heads are you using in this video? Coated emperors? I have a similar kit and I want to go for the sound you're getting in this video. All the best!
Thank you! Muffling is just one piece of rolled up gaff tape toward the edge, as seen in the epic B-roll footage where I'm not playing (lol!). The heads are just the standard Gretsch Permatone heads, which are basically coated ambassadors with a Gretsch logo on them. For this sound I like the ambassadors because they're a little brighter than emperors. Good luck and happy concert tom-ing!

Great video. I myself just got a set of concert toms from DW. I did a quick video on them. Adding the reverb...choice! They sound awesome with reverb. Your kit sounds great.

I wonder if they will make the floor Tom’s 16-18 without legs and install mounts well I’ll find out tomorrow I’m sure it will be up there did you order direct from Gretsch or a dealer ?
@@solofett7222 I asked about getting floor toms mounted but I think they're a little too heavy for it so they suggested legs. I'm a Gretsch endorser so I ordered direct from my artist rep, but I believe you'll have to order from a Gretsch dealer.

I was looking to have la copy of Phil’s set if you look at his sets the 16 /18 in are on a stand mounted $ talks I have a renown set with extra toms added it’s close but not what I want really want I started to try to pice it from 70s 80s usa concert Tom’s on e bay &reverb I have 3 out of 7 so far

My kid Jon has a new 6 tom Gretsch concert set in white (exactly like Phil's), mic positions similar to yours with Sennheiser MD421's. What are you using for tom microphones?
That’s so rad! I’m using 414 B-ULS on the rack toms and Soyuz Bomblets on the floor toms.

If you really want to go there for the 'Collins' sound, you need 'sandstone' on your walls.
You have a beautiful drum set. I have three beautiful huge gretsch kits. One of my sets has the power times but the same layout as yours but with 24 inch kick drum and I have a 6 inch Tom. It’s at 82 Jasper Maple set. I go back-and-forth on that set and takeoff the bottom heads and I keep the rings that are cut out just so I can have concert Tom’s. But I also have a big chrome 79 Ludwig set with two bass drums 6” to 20” Power Tom/concert Tom’s from the factory.
If you ever feel compelled to sell that drum set, please let me know.

Yes, it’s one of his old kits that’s on loan from a friend for an album I was producing. Shelly is one of my all-time favorites!

Concert toms are so punctual and to the point, kind of how I prefer my co workers to be lol
And I recommend covering the song “Domino” by Genesis with this drum kit 👌

Hand down, this version with these fantastic sounding drums crush the original version of Say. I have to say stumbling across this video allowed me to hear this incredible song. How were you able to order concert toms? I looked at the Gretsch site and at the order form for USA custom drums, and I don't see it as an option. Any advice would be appreciated.
I ordered direct from my artist rep at Gretsch but maybe ask which ever dealer you’re ordering through to specify “concert toms” on the order.

Personally I would go full Phil Collins on the 8&10 and use clear diplomats (that's what he did). It gives them that barking sound.
The rest sound perfect.
I just bought a 70's 8"&10" Gretsch concert toms last week.My 8" has 4 lugs and the 10" has 6. Would rather have the 5 lug style like you have
5 lug is impossible to tune. I had a stop sign bebop kit with a 12" 5 lug, IT DROVE ME NUTS
