Great to see the big sets back. For my main kit I have a 1972 Ludwig 26, 14, 16.18 and 1980 Hammered Bronze 14×6.5, still have yet to hear a better kit.
If BIG sound is what you are looking for, that Ludwig kit had the biggest sound to my ears. PDP surprised me, not a kit I would look at, but it sounded as good as any.
@csrgatorfan Good morning. I love big drums, and big sounding drums!! At the moment I have a bebop set. Yamaha stage custom birch in natural finish high gloss. 10, 12 toms and a 14 floor tom. 20" kick drum. I bought them brand new and put remo coated ambassador on the tom tops, and stock heads on bottom. They resonate beautifully. I do want another set with bigger sizes some day. For now my Yamaha's get the job done.

From an owner of Ludwig since 63, I was really impressed and amazed with the PDP. Really great, fat, old school sound. I envisioned Mitch Mitchell playing them.. Nice.

Greetings all from The Great Southern Land of Australia. This is by far the best big drum comparison video I've ever seen. I've watched this video many times and each kit is in the zone but for my ears, the PDP wins it hands down considering it's a fraction of the price of the others. I've owned and played well over 30 kits and consider myself a drum snob but this PDP has really changed my perception of what affordable drums can do and I'm now looking at buying one. You guys in The States are blessed with great drum stores and the Drum Center of Portsmouth is one of the best. Best wishes to you all.
Was waiting for you guys to do this vid!.. All the kits sound awesome. I too was very impressed with the PDP kit. Great video as always guys! All of a sudden I feel like buying drums... AGAIN!
Man alive. Would kill to hear a Sonor kit like this - maybe a 13/16/18/24 Vintage Series? Or any SQ2 kit that turns up where someone's ordered a 26" bass drum - doesn't even matter what wood or how thick.
Well I think we are all winners in this comparison. If I had to choose one though, it would be the George Way kit. I'm glad we live in a world where the big companies aren't the only choice, even though they sounded good too.
Most people will think I'm crazy but I like a 24 inch bass with a hole in the reso, muffling and low tuning. So much beef and punch! And I like mid tuned Tom's with a lot of attack and not too much sustain.

My brother has that exact Gretsch kit, snare and all, and they’re superb! I’ve been looking at the pdp for a long time though, I would like to get the 26” kit
Geo Way, Ludwig, CC, PDP, Gretsch - in that order for me. The first three nearly a tie. The kick drum in the Way kit placed it first. That kit sounds amazing!
very good point ...you really dont hear big drums sounds anymore....small drums have been the norm for quite a few years ....its refreshing to hear "BIG" drums ...thanks!!!
They were all pretty incredible, but as someone that has a smaller George Way kit, well there's just something special going on with those. I love that million dollar baby blue.
Man, that George White Kit sounds so good and that dunnet titanium snare!!!! golden! Def my favorite out of the five, but I was blown away by how good the PDP Concept sounded. I am upgrading from my Ludwig Element Evolution composite set to a maple kit and was leaning toward a ludwig classic maple pro beat, but now I may just get a PDP concept maple classic for more than $1,000 cheaper.
PDP also have the 26 BD for those who like it bigger. 26-13-16 I just ordered it! I opted for 24-13-16 with 12 & 18 add-ons Will probably get the matching snare soon. I’ve chose the Ox Blood Satin finish
I just picked up a Sakae Trilogy 10, 13, 18, 24 in sky blue pearl. Probably was sold by DCH originally! Going to be setting it up for the first time tonight. Would LOVE to find a matching 16" FT some day.
Great video. Every kit featured here is absolutely killer. So hard to choose. The C&C is gorgeous, but so are those Luddies. But at the price, the PDP gets my vote. And I LOVE that PDP snare.
I liked the George Way Aristocrat, then the CC, then the Gretsch. The first kit was nice, I would just change the heads for a warmer attack. PDP kit was very impressive too. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the vid.
Once again the Drum Center of Portsmouth produces the best drum comparison videos on the internet- I love the big mix, but the room mics tell the truth. I'm no drum snob- I gig with Crush and Ddrums, but own Gretsch Brooklyns from the Drum Center of Portsmouth and the tone, the response and feel is so incredible I sold my 1980's Gretsch power tom kit with a 24 inch kick and 18 inch floor. But, I still love big drums and when the time, money and space are there I'm picking up a modern big kit from DCP! Ludwig, PDP can you hear my siren's call?
Thank you! Love that BIG sound. I believe that Ludwig bass drum ate one of my cats. Anybody know what the batter head is on that Ludwig? You have convinced me to go back to a full front head, too. They all sound great in their own way. I would bet you had some fun making that video...
The kick on that PDP was just.... WOW!!! Not a fan of the wood hoops, but the sound of that kit was just amazing. The Ludwig was very nice as well!!! Great BIG sound out of that kit!!!
My favorite kit of all time was made for Carmine Appice It included a 15x26 bass drum a 13 and 16. They were made by ddrum in the classic style like the vintage Ludwig or Slingerland with the renforcement hoops. All I can say is playing that bass drum was a religous experience with a bibical sound!
My main kit is a Pearl EXR series custom component kit I ordered (from another company/shop) in 2006...It Has 11 x 13,14 x 15 rack toms offset mounted on dbl tom stand,16 x 16 & 16 x 18 floor toms w/legs, and an 18 x 22 kick...The unique size configuration is awesome with BIG DEEP diameter toms & kick that I LOVE...And you NEVER see that configuration ANYWHERE.....It is in a Strata(oyster) black finish.....It looks & sounds 3x the price...Too bad Pearl discontinued the EXR series not long after I got them....GREAT drums
Those Ludwigs Are My Favourite! Im a Bonham Big Drums Player I Have a Ludwig Classic Maple Kit in 24 13 16 18 I Love Them Im a Ludwig Player But The C&C Kit Sounds Amazing!
Lets hear it for the big 4 of British Heavy Rock drumming. John Bonham , Cozy Powell. Jerry Shirley and Simon Kirke. This inspired this Big Drum aesthetic today!!
@@mattharbison2011 love Ian Paice. However I'd put him in the mitch mitchell camp since he had all the impressive jazz chops. The 4 I listed is the archetype of power rock drumming.
I also used Remo Coated Ambassador heads on the top and bottom on every drum , " ALWAYS " I don't care if they say Bonham used Coated Emperors on the top and clear ambassadors on the bottom. I use the same skins on every drum for the last 50 years.. I can tell, that Remo has done something to cheapen their skin production because I just rebuilt a 1972 Slingerland 3-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple drum set with all new hardware and new 1.6mm rims from the 50', 60', and 70's and I'm using a 1976 Buddy Rich 6 ply Slingerland 5 1/2x 14 TDR snare and the set sounds fantastic, but I bought all new Remo Coated ambassador heads and I tuned them the same way and can tell there is a difference since my last set of new skins on my 1972 Buddy Rich Rogers kit.
I wood have loved having that George way kit when I was out working. Dam they sound good.!!! Ron is putting out some beautiful drums.Im hanging in there for a set of British drum co lounge series.Might have to evaluate the size of the kick I pick out.Already know I'm going with a 13" tom,and a 16 floor.Might have to step that bass drum up to a 24". Great video guys.
I was digging all of them but I'd have to go with the Ludwig. That color was amazing as well. What I would have liked to have seen/ heard would have been the Sonor SQ1 in 24, 13, 16, 18 and maybe a Pro-Lite in that same configuration.
I've been wanting to hear what those PDP kits sound like and I am impressed. I don't think they offer add on drums for those though and I would want to add an 18 floor tom. I've always been a fan of playing one up two down.
Of course Barrett is playing the Gretsch cuz he played that awesome purple sparkly Gretsch Broadkaster in that video, maybe the coolest looking drums i've ever seen
In this case BIGGER is better! Deeper sounding thumping drums 🥁! John Bonham, Bill Ward, Alex Van Halen, Tommy Lee what else is there to say. Old-school!!! 🤘🏻
my dream kit would be a Ludwig Classic Maple in either Green Sparkle, or Burgundy WIne, with custom large configuration: 26x16 Kick, 15x12 Rack, 16x16 and 16x18 Floors, with a switched out choice of Ludwig Black Beauty, or Ludwig Maple Coliseum Snares both in 14x8
Loving the Gretsch kit. So wide open. Not to mention having no top cymbal felts Allows for the cymbals to breathe and the kit tuned wide-open to breathe got a love it. And the long-haired beast laying down some serious grooves🥁🤘🥁🤘🥁🤘
All these kits are fantastic! However, I’m so glad y’all feel the same way about the pdp kit. I also never cared for the brand, but they’ve been making some more worthy moves recently (like this wood hoop kit). I still can’t believe I got the kit for $500...haters will say I’m lying, but I amazingly scored at a store that had it on clearance. A literal steal. Also, I’m so happy that y’all featured the aluminum wood hoop snare!! I just got one last week and yet again I’m impressed with PDP for putting out such a drum with such features at that price range. I bought it to go with this kit. It goes perfect.
I had a Mapex Saturn Subsonic with a 24" bass drum. Quite a rare kit and sounded like you were trying to summon Thor himself. What made it more interesting is that it was converted to a nesting kit.
I’ve got the concepts in 13 16 18 26 14s and they are an absolutely killer sound… I can honestly say I’ve never had so many compliments off other drummers on my kits sound before (I played masterworks and reference series for years prior) These things are unbelievably light and with no muffling and some fine Turing instead, absolutely sing… Couldn’t recommend them enough… if u can get hold of a set second hand… snap em up. U wont regret it
They all sound great - and I love that open boomy bassdrum sound - very Bonhamic or Carlocky! PDP's sound great but as a drum-freak (not a snob) myself - I'd go for Gretsch or George Way.
The PDP graphic says it's a 26" kick drum. It's a 24" kick drum. The video guy has issues.

and I'm using a 1976 Buddy Rich 6 ply Slingerland 5 1/2x 14 TDR snare and the set sounds fantastic, but I bought all new Remo Coated ambassador heads and I tuned them the same way and can tell there is a difference since my last set of new skins on my 1972 Buddy Rich Rogers kit.
ALL amazing kits. Really loved Ludwig and Gretch. Try pearl Fiberglass hybrid kapur 26, 13, 16 and 18. O own this kit and sounds huge.
I have a 1928 set of slingerland that looks just similar to that except it's a 28 inch bass drum. They all sound pretty good to me
I've been wanting to hear what those PDP kits sound like and I am impressed. I don't think they offer add on drums for those though and I would want to add an 18 floor tom. I've always been a fan of playing one up two down.
I mean they might be able to. You would just have to go through DW and its gonna be pretty expensive
You can order the PDP 16 x 18, they've been available since PDP introduced the wood-hoop kits.
Pdp is a great looking kit! Love the wood hoops
Saw that exact pdp kit for 550 at my local guitar center last week, didn’t know it sounded that great😱
Of course Barrett is playing the Gretsch cuz he played that awesome purple sparkly Gretsch Broadkaster in that video, maybe the coolest looking drums i've ever seen
In this case BIGGER is better! Deeper sounding thumping drums 🥁! John Bonham, Bill Ward, Alex Van Halen, Tommy Lee what else is there to say. Old-school!!! 🤘🏻
Don’t forget Dave!

You should have heard Gene, Louie or Buddy!

The LUDWIG sounded really SOLID, deep and powerful to me, my fave.
I thought for sure you would have the Pearl Studio Session Select Birch/Mahogany with the 24x14 13 16 18 huge drums
First time I like the room mics more than full mix !
my dream kit would be a Ludwig Classic Maple in either Green Sparkle, or Burgundy WIne, with custom large configuration: 26x16 Kick, 15x12 Rack, 16x16 and 16x18 Floors, with a switched out choice of Ludwig Black Beauty, or Ludwig Maple Coliseum Snares both in 14x8
Loving the Gretsch kit. So wide open. Not to mention having no top cymbal felts Allows for the cymbals to breathe and the kit tuned wide-open to breathe got a love it. And the long-haired beast laying down some serious grooves🥁🤘🥁🤘🥁🤘
I just got these sizes with two bass drums alah carmine appice in Diablo red!!!!!🥁🏋
I’ve got the concepts in 13 16 18 26 14s and they are an absolutely killer sound…
I can honestly say I’ve never had so many compliments off other drummers on my kits sound before (I played masterworks and reference series for years prior)
These things are unbelievably light and with no muffling and some fine Turing instead, absolutely sing…
Couldn’t recommend them enough… if u can get hold of a set second hand… snap em up. U wont regret it
They all sound great - and I love that open boomy bassdrum sound - very Bonhamic or Carlocky! PDP's sound great but as a drum-freak (not a snob) myself - I'd go for Gretsch or George Way.
This is crazy, I don’t just how much cheaper the PDP’s are but they sounded amazing ….seriously amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
