Another GREAT video Naomi! As an IT Manager at a company with 200 employees, I was introduced to Bitcoin in 2012 thanks to Ransomware. :) Great information in this video.
Back when I was in the virus detection industry one big issue we ran into was potentially getting sued when you classified a piece of software as malware. I won't mention the company but on more than one occasion that threat prevented the company from listing the software as a vulnerability/trojan/virus which in turn prevented remediation.
Great in-depth work as usual Naomi thank you! Love your videos. Malware malware malware.... Scariest for me is keylogger malware that records keystrokes and can get passwords no matter how complex. I totally agree 3rd party anti-malware can be risky. I use windows security and cross my fingers. Always walking the line on my cellphone looking for a mysterious new app popping up out of nowhere vs any weird shifting some 'update' did. Computer stuff becoming so risky for average user that's only moderately competent with these things. Great words. Thanks again and stay vigilant and careful everybody
I have a friend who for years used his laptop with no anti-virus software at all. He asked me to check it out and see if I could fix the problems he was having. After spending hours with various software attempting to remove the unbelievable level of infection he had acquired, we decided it was better to just kill that hard drive than to risk starting the whole mess all over again by taking his documents to a new computer. So I get the concern over an anti-malware app itself being malware. But my machines always have antivirus on them and they run well.
About 15 maybe 20 years the worst anti virus I had the misfortune to install was Norton. It made my already slow 2001 Win XP packard bell PC barely useable. Took over 10 minutes to boot up, slower than my C64 loading games the 1980s.
YES, i've been telling people this for years. I've repaired thousands of PC's from working at a shop back in 2005, up until I opened my own repair shop in 2010, and still today, I never recommend anyone purchase antivirus software!

Just discovered your channel. Quite a bewildering array of things to consider. Naomi, don't forget that some anti-virus software permanently keeps all your files that it's scanned, even after you stop using it - one these is Norton's Anti-Virus software. Norton also now uses Amazon's servers for their VPN service ... Amazon Servers, Really??! No more needed to be said about that! smh In addition, Windows 10 is basically spyware itself, including keylogger, where everything you type is send back to MS and saved in a databases. You can turn many of these functions off, if you know which ones to turn "off" and trust MS that they are doing so. 🙄 Windows also made a "deal" with the us gov that windows has a "backdoor" as part of their os, that "they" can use and access. All MS products have such (or at least "shortcut keys") to access it. So lets say you build an Access DB (not sure why you'd want to "now at days" lol, but let's say you did) and finalize it and now think it's secure - Wrong! If you know the "shortcut keys" - you can now bring the the final version back into designer/development mode and see all the code and entries and modify them, if you want to.
10:34 Linux is not based on UNIX. it's UNIX-like, much the same way that Pepsi is the same colour as Dr. Pepper, but that's as far as the similarities go. Linux does not contain any UNIX code or libraries, hence the recursive acronym "GNU is Not UNIX".
That isn't 100% correct about Linux. Currently, 76% of the internet is run on Linux Servers. Because of this, there are actually quite a few malware out there for Linux. The catch is, because of the way Linux is designed, with security from the ground up, malware usually can't affect a Linux system without a user on that system doing something stupid that gives the malware access to root permissions.
I just found your channel and subscribed.. If you know anything regarding how network carriers are preventing unlocked phones from working on their networks, can u do a video about it.. I have had the same network carrier for 25 years and never had more problems with the shenanigans they are now playing with the forcing of the 5g network and preventing anything but a network phone from working properly with them!

By the time you figure out what to do, you will have lost this battle anyway. Thanks, Naomi Brockwell. This is fantastic, but Me? Not worried. Say Goodnight, Gracie.
The best solution I've used by far is Shadow Defender, it runs your PC in a virtual machine and making eradicating the nastiest malware just a reboot away. I store documents and other files on a dedicated Google Drive. The system isn't 100% flawless, but it's faster and, I think, far more resilient than anti-virus applications. You can literally delete the Windows folder while running Shadow Defender, reboot, and you're fine.
Very well covered Naomi! I've moved everything I can to Linux. Just much much better! I would like to infect 1 000 000 computers and mine Monero though... any tips LOL
Microsoft has said that even with windows defwndwr/security, they recommend upgrading to a third party malware security provider that solely focuses on malware. Mac IS Gate Keeper? Reminds me if the trojan in the movie "The Net". Is the master password 'Mozart's Ghost' or 'praetorian'?🤔
I have a question about the Linux security. We've learned that systems like Tails and Qubes seem to be very secure. But what about the most popular ones like Fedora, Mint and others, if we also assume that the user is not tech savvy AT ALL, and also uses Linux for the first time? Do these systems have good security? Will a very non-tech user be able to use and activate all of that security, or do they rather need help from the community?
In terms of security, any type of security. The security is good as it's weakest link, in this case its user. That non-tech user is able to do it, but not without atleast reading stuff because without knowledge you aren't going to do anything productive in reasonable time.
Yara, debian forensics-all, chkrootkit, LiMe, dd, volatility are some linux tools, but preventing malware is lot harder... avoid x86/javascript? lol ...also bugs from apps, games, third party utilities that lead to remote code execution can become a full chain rootkit with persistence on any OS/computer. Also zero day exploits won't get detected (thus the name) and can't get uninstalled without breaking the system (like the Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal). Zero click exploits are the new vogue too, and the stakes are higher for mobile like Android.
I use anti-malware mostly because I share pc with family. On my laptop although old I run none. If I questioning something I am about to try, do, etc I just run it on a vm. I dont know much, but seem to know enough thus far.
Excellent video and coverage at a "general audience" level. However, she always works in some points of interest and benefit to more advanced users. As I always say, brilliant and beautiful, so what's not to love in her videos. If anyone knows the old X-Files 5th season episode "Kill Switch", I always had the same reaction to Naomi that the Lone Gunmen had to Invisigoth. If you're not familiar with it, you should watch it. Co-written by William Gibson.
I did fall victim to a ransomware attack a couple of months ago. My local tech was able to eliminate the damage for about $30 CAD. They suggested I purchase an AV but couldn't promise me that it would prevent a careless click on a link from striking me again.
It's great that Linux is ignored by virus makers. It makes me laugh when the gurus point out that Linux has such a small market share...yet Linux/Unix runs the internet!
@@NaomiBrockwellTV I've been up all night watching Aussie Movies. :). You keep up your great work!. I used to be tech savvy but gave up. PC is basically my telly my phone, my games. ;). Have a Merry Xmas Naomi
Note the "security" of the operating systems was directly proportional to market share. If nobody uses your OS (i.e., Linux) the bad guys won't target it and you are more secure than using Windows.
You keep getting things mostly right but ever so slightly wrong. Linux is Unix-like, but it is not Unix. Another one that Mac users claim is that OS X is Unix when in fact it is based on a distribution of BSD that Apple purchased. Thus, it is also Unix-like, but not really Unix.
I use Sophos, my employer uses it so that is where I got the info on it, I haven't had any issues as far as I know. buy does Network security software count as Malware/av software even tho it goes beyond?
@@nelauren Correct, but Linux is also more secure by design. Better file systems offering great security measures, as well as Unix-style permissions are just more secure than Windows-land stuff. Not to mention the Linux Kernel being open-source is a huge plus, because people can actively view vulnerabilities and their fixes. You just sorta have to trust Microsoft finds their vulnerabilities and trust they don't purposefully inject vulnerabilities as back doors. Linux OSes also have significantly less telementary, so even if Malware got root access they wouldn't necessarily get everything they need. This past year, there was a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Unix Utility Sudo. This could have been the gateway to vicious malware, but having thousands of independent people review the source code found the vulnerability out. And, on Linux, you get choice. There are active efforts to replace Sudo with simpler utilities that offer more protection because they are simpler. You can't just change Microsoft's Authentication if you lose confidence, and you can't even see how the Authentication is performed because the source code is unavailable. All these benefits culminate to a safer computer experience.
Great video Naomi Sweetheart Love and respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰 I wish i had a hug and a picture with you I use Linux now and don't attract to Windows or MacOs anymore because of privacy reasons Why people don't use linux ? It's free & open source and do all kinds of work that you done on windows and macos without paying any money
It's not quite as user friends or interoperable with apps that people need, but also I think it can be scary for people to try something they don't know.
My password mgr is a note book & a pen ! Also limiting how many accounts i setup, which is getting more and more difficult as alot of websites require an account for access. (My sentiment is becoming they can go punt I wont use them) Just imagine using pen & paper in 2024...
most proprietary hardware cpu/chipsets has built in hardware backdoors that can be invoked at any given moment someone just have to whisper the magic word
Viruses are mostly created by antivirus companies; I used to work for one creating viruses, I'm not mentioning any company names. Does anyone remember the beverage coaster one that opened the CD tray? Get rid of the windows PC and you won't get viruses & malware, it's that simple.
Sadly Most People..... never take the time to become familiar with their device. Most do not care either. They would rather just throw it out and get a new one. If all you do is surf the web, Look at UA-cam and casual e-mail. don't even bother buying a fully fledged computer. Has VIMEO started a cat-video stealing conspiracy??? 🧐 I'm sorry they shut down you account tho :(
I just found your channel and subscribed..
Thank you for the sub!!
Just keep connecting all sensitive data with the internet. What could possibly go wrong?
No one has to stop using the internet, just make better choices when you do 🙏
You're just so great! Thank you for all that you do!
Very informative video. Thank you!
Thank you for this very enlightening look into AV and AM products. Do you have an opinion on MalwareBytes for MacOS?
Linux is running most websites. It's exploited much more frequently now especially since websites are often not updated as frequently
how is that Naomi knows so much...shes like a genius or something
To quote the unforgettable Alfred E. Newman: "Me? Worry?" And I agree. Sleep well and don't worry (unless you are REALLY concerned or should be).
I've now watched this video three times 👍 👍 👍
Hopefully it was helpful!!
@@NaomiBrockwellTV, absolutely. It's good to get multiple opinions on the subject. Thanks for the clear and concise presentation.
Very well covered Naomi! I've moved everything I can to Linux. Just much much better! I would like to infect 1 000 000 computers and mine Monero though... any tips LOL
Lol no tips there
@@NaomiBrockwellTV make a plan, we will split the XMR ... LOL
Excellent lay down. Thx.
I am a linux user and it is all I use at home. At work I do use windows but I do no have a choice there even though I am part of the IT department.
Great video!
Merci Naomi
Merci Achtung
Any recommendations for anti malware programs that are best for privacy?
All best Noami... Excellent
Naomi, great message. Thoughts on VPN?
Good for certain situations: ua-cam.com/video/XLZmmxi_PYE/v-deo.html
:)
Thank you. Have you given any more thought to selling a privacy enhanced phone?
Still thinking about it and figuring it out! 💛
I did fall victim to a ransomware attack a couple of months ago. My local tech was able to eliminate the damage for about $30 CAD. They suggested I purchase an AV but couldn't promise me that it would prevent a careless click on a link from striking me again.
Eep stay safe!
I found the best way to avoid malware is to avoid the Internet - problem solved
Decades and didn't even realize I had a type...Nerds!!!
😁👍 Seriously tho...what's the diff between a virus, a worm and a root kit?
It's great that Linux is ignored by virus makers. It makes me laugh when the gurus point out that Linux has such a small market share...yet Linux/Unix runs the internet!
And Microsoft Updates damage my computer every single time...I wonder what Trojan they are forcing is to take?
Really? It's not the update, it's your system.
So what you are saying is malware boosters every 3 months should be good?
I dont get the Hong Kong Phooey reference. Can someone explain? 14:30
Antimalware software will not detect malicious hardware devices such as Keelogs hardware keyloggers.
Very informative video! Thanks. :)
Subbed 'n Thumbs Up (and the bell of course!) lol
Thanks so much!
@@NaomiBrockwellTV I've been up all night watching Aussie Movies. :). You keep up your great work!. I used to be tech savvy but gave up. PC is basically my telly my phone, my games. ;). Have a Merry Xmas Naomi
@@mickgatz214 Merry Christmas to you too :)
Did I just get called a geek/nerd? lol @ 10:40
can anyone give me advice about network virus, i've tried a lot but its using my bandwidth
And this is why I use Linux. There are fewer viruses, malware that can infect most linux systems.
Security by obscurity in not security.
I use Linux Mint I use multiple backup and new password every month
Nice video, thanks
Brains and beauty, Your're a double threat Naomi. You deserve way more subs.
If you want to be safe(r), use a VM and create snapshots.
Great video Naomi Sweetheart
Love and respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
I wish i had a hug and a picture with you
I use Linux now and don't attract to Windows or MacOs anymore because of privacy reasons
Why people don't use linux ?
It's free & open source and do all kinds of work that you done on windows and macos without paying any money
It's not quite as user friends or interoperable with apps that people need, but also I think it can be scary for people to try something they don't know.
Quick question: Can I use iCloud storage as a back up?
oh goodness, it's not e2ee and everything is completely readable by apple and anyone with access, so use at your own risk!
@@NaomiBrockwellTV oh wow so what should I use as solid back up for pics, files etc that are super secure?
@Don Bravo great!!! I’ll try that. Any suggestions on Hard drives that good for this?
Wow. Great contend.

My password mgr is a note book & a pen ! Also limiting how many accounts i setup, which is getting more and more difficult as alot of websites require an account for access. (My sentiment is becoming they can go punt I wont use them)
Just imagine using pen & paper in 2024...
most proprietary hardware cpu/chipsets has built in hardware backdoors that can be invoked at any given moment someone just have to whisper the magic word
I wouldn't trust Bill Gates with anything
I use Linux. No mallware unless I enter my root password, which I won't do.
Viruses are mostly created by antivirus companies; I used to work for one creating viruses, I'm not mentioning any company names. Does anyone remember the beverage coaster one that opened the CD tray? Get rid of the windows PC and you won't get viruses & malware, it's that simple.
Less problems with gnu/linux.
Do one about phone anti viruses
You are adorable ;-) Ohhhhh the glory days of skybot search and destroy
Sadly Most People..... never take the time to become familiar with their device. Most do not care either. They would rather just throw it out and get a new one.
If all you do is surf the web, Look at UA-cam and casual e-mail. don't even bother buying a fully fledged computer.
If you use your computer as the Swiss-Army-Knife that it truly is.... you will take the time to learn how it operates so you will know when something unusual is going on.
Computers are even more complex than an automobile and if you can't be bothered to learn how to change the oil... you are just begging for disaster.
Any security experts that recommends you do not use AV software at a personal or organizational level isn’t an expert. That’s like a home security expert advising you to not use security cameras.
This simply isn’t correct
Yikes, beautiful man?! mcafee? Youre a saint Naomi or sarcastic haha but awesome video, hard to find this info, and its much needed! Lastly! Everyone support her and join Odysee! its like UA-cam but way way less censored and you get a lil crypto for participating and uploading ⚡️
