  • Are politicians really going to ban petrol engines in motorcycles by 2040? Well this is likely to be proposed once again before the summer in the UK if politicians have their way. But are they still missing vital alternatives and blindly following a flawed policy?

Ahh yes, politicians saving the world one tyrannical edict at a time. Just ask them...they'll be only too happy to explain just how brilliant they are, and how the world would fall apart without them. Since it's so obvious that they are capable of living your life better than you can, just shut up and OBEY. Truly inspiring to live in such glorious times...

Man, life is too short for this. I now get it when Rhett Butler said, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." By 2040, if I'm still alive and physically able to, I'll be riding an ICE Harley or Triumph or BMW or whatever. And if by then I'm considered 'old school' by the EV riding brigade then Rhett Butler's infamous line will no doubt be appropriately utilised, only that I may well replace 'my dear' with 'A-holes'

Anything could happen in 16 years time. Perhaps in 10 years time battery technology will allow a distance of a 2000 miles and charging will be 2 mins only and batteries will only be half the size of the present ones. Technology is exponentially advancing.

How many people work in the the UK petrol industry? Not just oil extraction and refining but also commercial distribution? How many people work in the automotive industry? Not just manufacturing, sales but also maintenance?
My understanding is the EVs are generally very maintenance free as is the electrical grid after installation. Any realistic foresight where all these potential unemployed shall get training, jobs or pay taxes? Speaking thereof, how much will oil-to-electric impact the general tax base?

Don't forget about bearings and races ,any cables. Anything that rotates is going to need lubrication. So, not really maintenance free.

Ban gas on cars and motorcycles? What about boats? Pro electric keep talking about how great they are, but the grid is powered by coal or Nuclear or natural gas. Grid is not big enough as it now stands, solar only works in areas were you have enough sun, wind costs more to build and used more oil type energy to manufacture and life experience is not very long.

The electrical infrastructure is not a problem. It is not now and won't be in 2040. You can already charge on the roadside - there are at least a dozen charge points within 500m from where I live. The grid in the UK can take it - don't believe scare stories that claim otherwise. In my family we drive electric cars and one of my bikes is the BMW CE04. No issue charging on my wallbox at home anyway - and it is dead cheap. The issue is touring though. The battery technology does not exist yet for motorbikes. That is why I keep riding my Harleys.
Personally I foresee the death of the mopeds by e-bikes. Many of those e-bikes sold today are actually mopeds with faux pedals. No cost for insurance etc.. Chargeable everywhere using a 3pin plug.

"That is why I keep riding my Harleys" - bwahahahahahahahaha Ru in the UK - b/c Harley has been a POS bike in the US for quite a while. I remember the fiasco back 10ish years? - and know they can't attract much US market share. Had an 04 super glide, never again - all the after factor b/s to make it even sound like a Harley. Friend had a Fat Boy he and wife hated. Looked and goldwing and said hell no. Yahama geezer glide had shaft, fully loaded radio/comms, electric plugs for winter riding gear for a couple grand less than base goldwing. He had back issues and the Harley suspension or belt was killing him. Said after our first long ride the pain was night and day compared to the "Highly Dollarson".

2040 is 16 years away. 16 years ago was 2008. Who would say then that in 2023 the worlds best selling car would be an ev? There were no chargers etc. 82% of car sales in Norway in 2023 was pure ev. Times are changing, and changing fast

Sorry Alf, you’re talking drivel again. There are no infrastructure problems, there are no range problems, there is no need to burn petrol or diesel or alternative fuels for personal road transport. As I say to other EV no sayers, have you actually driven an electric vehicle? I challenge you, go ride an electric motor bike, a decent one like a Livewire or Verge. The issues of cost of vehicles will eventually balance itself out, same with the motorbikes.; I agree they are too expensive at the moment. The change to EV’s is to reduce emissions from transport that are damaging everyone’s health and causing climate change. To produce alternative fuels requires power. That power produces alternative fuels inefficiently and when burnt is about 25% efficient (25% motive power and 75% heat). In an EV it’s near 100%. EV’s make sense. I’m lucky, I have off street parking and currently my car is charging from solar panels… free. Oh and like the ban on ICE cars, the ban on motorcycles will be on new ones only, you can continue to run your petrol Harley. I won’t be, too decrepit by then.

Has nothing to do with if you drive are have drove one of the Tree Humper Specials the infrastructure has taken damn near 100 years to get where we’re at now imagine changing one of the Specials when people buys things at stores and so on without trucks no one is buying anything and than imagine having to charge all these trucks while on breaks and what not than who’s going to pay for all of it and even at truck stops now you’ll damn near get in fight just to park now the USA wasn’t ready for elogs few years ago and it’s bad now but having to charge one of these things going few hundred miles LOL it’ll be years before they have it ready than the Tree Humpers well humping something else because of lithium hell lithium is worse than petrol it’s crazy of how some acts over things just because it’s new and don’t know a damn thing of the world works other than oh I got a Tree Humping car look at me don’t have damn clue LOL you can’t make this shit up and thousands was out of job months back and some hollers the ice is melting north and south poles but hell if you go by science it says the earth was ice aged and the ice from the poles was leftover so where did all the ice go I’m guessing it melted from the center out so they ain’t no one stopping earth from changing everything changes they ain’t no damn vehicle going to stop the earth from going it’s changes damn I just can’t believe some are so damn gullible it’s so crazy to even think of something like that
