Christo's wrapped Arc de Triomphe

- When the artist known as Christo - famous for monumental projects that involved wrapping landmarks and landscapes in brilliant fabric - died in 2020, many doubted there would still be more of his spectacles to experience. But last week, the artist's nephews and studio manager teamed up to realize a long-planned dream of Christo and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude: the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, wrapped in colors emulating the French flag. Correspondent John Blackstone reports on what may be just the first of the couple's projects to be realized posthumously.

I was in NYC when he did the Gates, absolutely breathtaking to be apart of it and witness it!
He wrapped one of our atolls in pink foam. We were so proud to be chosen for an artwork by Christo. It was like we had done it ourselves, we took such pride on it. I don't remember anyone denying it wasn't art, supposed there must have been, but among many artistic friends, there was never that whisper.
I was in Paris when he wrapped the Pont Neuf in 85.
Christo and Jean Claude are artistic geniuses.
I feel sorry for those who don't get it, and don't even try to. 🎨🧡
I feel sorry for you… 🤣😂🤣
@@_S-O-S_ I feel sorry for YOU. All your "comments" are immature, sarcastic, pedestrian, and cynical. 😟
My friend Irene gave me a piece of the Running Fence. She and her college buddy were driving around in Marin County when Christo's crews were taking it down after its 2 weeks in the California sunlight. I consider that piece of fabric a treasured artifact from a great project.
What great friends!!! Glad you treasure that little piece of history!
Very cool.
The art is in the creation. What one is left with is a work of art.
I know what Paris is getting for Christmas this year! The gift is the mysterious desire of wrapping. And the surprising revelation of unwrappiing. The rest is anticlimax and afterthought.
If you made up your bed this morning, then you’re an artist.

Thank you Christo and Jeanne, we miss you

Is it art when music isn't recorded but is beautiful? Art is temporary. Even paintings will not last forever. To experience something ethereal and beautiful is art. Let yourself go.
I guess it's shrouded in fabric, as a tribute to the late artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude - because they are more important than those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Why cover up all of those names? and the ($16.54 million) spent to do it. SMH.
Next lets create a bonfire and burn the Mona Lisa! Remember, beauty is ethereal, not temporary. Let yourself go.
@@arktos298 The work was self-financed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through sales of project documentation, including drawings and models. I met Christo and Jean Claude in 1994 when they came to my school to give a slide presentation. In a small room I sat next to him as he rocked nervously back and forth talking about a project he wanted to do in Central Park . 10 years later that project became the Gates. He was a pleasant person very different from many of the famous artists we had coming to talk to us, and his wife was funny because she was always finishing his sentences.
I also attended a presentation in my school and they both were phenomenal!
Christo's Running Fence crossed my uncle's land in Petaluma back in 76. They had a few visits from Jeanne and Christo the year prior to seek permission. All land owners were paid to have their land used for the back drop and then when the fence came down any fabric/poles used on your property land owners were able to keep it.
I'm so jealous of your uncle :(
Having been born in 1976, my memory of Christo’s work started with his iconic lilly pad islands in 1983. He always reminded me of a nuclear submarine who would pop up above an ice flow once in awhile!

Because art has no real rules. And since it’s temporary, who cares. It’s like when he encased the German Reichstag a national symbol of independence. Somebody asked Christo why he felt he had to shroud the building and he said “because it was there!”

Awesome Art's. ❤️♥️♥️✝️
Contemporary art is an one-upmanship game to see who can push the envelop furthest without people realizing it's crap.
Those who choose to invest the time and stop to ponder their reaction to such things may see/feel different things. It does not matter if it matches the artist’s intention(s) or vision(s). The value is in the pondering.
Here, I love the shadows & highlights created when the sun is lower in the sky. I love the shimmer of the material.
Simultaneously, I see a war monument covered, shroud-like, with rivulets of blood-red ropes that bring to mind the escaping life force running down the bodies of those soldiers or innocents maimed or killed for land/money/power/freedom.
How do I define “art”? That which stirs something in me, be it thought or word-free feeling.

Stunning pieces! 🌞🙂🌞

Interesting. This is why I watch this show.

Y'all complaining about the "waste of the materials" are missing the point of the artists work and the meaning for the piece. Also who's to say that it isn't reused for other things, it was taken down not necessarily thrown away. Also there's worse waste going on than this.
C'est magnifique! The wrapping conveys the interconnectivity so pervasive in contemporary society as seen through an artist's eyes.
The wrapping covered a monument in honor of dead soldiers, it's a also a total waste o material and effort to make a beautifull structure look like a 3d rendering

Christo was a visionary genius. Sometimes hard to comprehend, but genius. Our tiny, little single screen cinema is housed in an old military Quonset hut building and has many pieces of 'Runny Fence' hanging ceiling--it vastly improves the 'tin' building's lousy acoustics. It's always a wonderful moment when you look up and realize the dusty fabric over your head is part of an artistic and wonderful moment in our lives. Cheers!
His works are mostly a kind of temporary graffiti on a massive scale and, in my opinion, remarkable only in their logistics. And the logistics is mostly what is commented on. But his wrapping of the Reichstag was a serious statement on many levels and deserves to be remembered and studied.
