This video made me smile. I and some of my friends are a part of the SCA ((society of Creative Anachronism). This group does reenactment from Elizabethan back as far as people want to go. Last year I was apprenticed by a master of craft who specialized in beading. When I was apprenticed I was gifted a Russian peasant costume to match the other two apprentices. Mine was green, the other two were a dark pinkish red and blue. So we have privately joked about us being the sleeping beauty three fairies. The last couple of months and a half we have been talking about making the lady we are apprenticed to a gown during this same era you are doing. Inspired like you by Maleficent. So this video made me smile this morning. Thank you for doing this project and giving so much great information.
"It only took around four to six hours per sleeve" - this is beautiful understatement, and testimony to your dedication. I love everything about this project and the video.
Because I didn't know that either (language barrier): Wool broadcloth is a woven wool fabric that has been walked, i.e. soaked in water and moved around so that the fibers felt. It's not a pure felt, but like felt doesn't fray. Sounds like amazing material, if my skin didn't itch with the mere thought of wool touching it. You'd really need an underlayer that covers everything, making a houppelande a outdoors and cold weather garment.

This is so fun! I'm currently working on a maleficent costume too!! Bit of a different time period but its nice to "compare notes"! It may also be entirely coincidence but there is another fairytale personage called "malusine" which was a fairy woman who turns into a dragon toward the end of her story. She's got a more traditional Psyche and Cupid style story set up but it's interesting to see the connection. I'll probably chat about it when I eventually make my video.

Lovely, just lovely! The drama, the sleeves, the coziness! I ended up with a whole bunch of SCA books around 14 years old and read them EXTENSIVELY; I've always wanted a houppelande. I'll file your tips into that corner of my brain.
Sooooo I'm doing medieval reenactment almost for 10 years now. And first thing that I dreamed of sewing when I started doing reenactment of course was a massive silk or at least wool houppelande. But of course at the time it was too expensive for me. Now that years have passed, I've noticed that I still don't have a houppelande that I want in my medieval wardrobe. But then you made this beautiful video and a beautiful houppelande and reminded me of my dreams that I now am able to fulfil! So thank you for your work and for inspiring people!
The word that comes to mind for me looking at the historical representations is "sumptuous" and I definitely think that's appropriate for Maleficent! Really stunning work!!
Love this. Really interesting to hear about the history of the outfit and the style that would have been worn. Absolutely fabulous! Thankyou for doing all that research and for sharing this with us.
I’m not seeing any comments regarding the concept art; if there are some, apologies for the repetition. If I recall correctly, Marc Davis did the concept art for Maleficent, and he was all about drawing inspiration from history. In several of the bonus feature interviews, he mentions that the historical accuracy is whimsically similar. I love this cosplay so much and Sleeping Beauty is my all time favorite Disney animated piece!!!!
Even "Once Upon A Dream" was also Tshaickovsky. They just wrote lyrics to his original waltz and made the necessary technical score alterations to turn it from an orchestral waltz to an Operatic duet which must accommodate a central vocal line.
Where on earth do you keep all these amazing creations?! I have enough trouble accommodating my winter coats, can’t begin to imagine how much wardrobe space malificent takes up.
My first thought when you said this was that episode of A Stitch in Time, with the Van Eyck painting. I'm so here for all of this, and I can't wait to see what you do with the headpiece.

maleficent has always been my favorite disney character! as someone with no knowledge of historical fashion i’m surprised her outfit is so accurate. the houppelande looks amazing and i love the sleeves 💜
It looks awesome. This is going to sound crazy, but I think I loved the swishing sounds of the piece moving around you the best in the final shots--it SOUNDS a little like wings, which of course was part of what Disney was going for in the original animation. I can absolutely imagine you sweeping into a party and the entire room pausing in that outfit. Best of luck cursing the next child to whose Christening you were not invited!
It’s so great to find out that Maleficents outfit is 15th century inspired . I did a video on if Sleeping Beauty was historically accurate, but didn’t know what to make with Maleficents fit because I was using the 14th century for reference instead.
5:44 “once upon a dream” is actually just a portion of the ballet with lyrics added. so it’s not even really “original” in that sense. it’s “the garland waltz” in the ballet score.
You have become my favorite UA-cam very quickly! The way you talk about you method and order of operations is exactly how I think when I create! INTJ vibes? Also the sound of your shears and fabric handling is why I typically savor every moment I work!

So, so cool!! I’ve never identified with the Disney Princesses, either. I was much more inclined to love self-rescuing types like Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, and Leia Organa (before she was conscripted by Disney). I absolutely LOVE this cosplay!!! Just gorgeous. Have a blessed week!
Have you watched Mulan?
Tiana, Merida...
@@Kick0a0cat @DY Those are great options, but we '80s babies had fewer choices when it came to proactive Disney princesses during our formative years. Pocahontas was my problematic fave when I was 10.
@@roecocoa Jasmine.
She was all like "Um, no. I'm out."
She continuously exhibits determination, clever problem solving, self-worth and toughness throughout her story, much more so than the other characters. She eventually gets the "happy ending" but it isn't the standard "Prince Charming rescued me as I sat by helplessly from an evil villain/dire situation/impoverished existence/curse, based solely upon my beauty or other perceived material value". Jasmine analyzes her predicaments, plans or makes quick decisions and actively participates in her own rescues.
She's a solid role model, even when she fails, because she darn well *tries*
She also started a trend:
Disney gave us other strong non-white female non-villains throughout the 90s, but honestly none of them were quite so badass... Esmeralda is my close second.
Edit to clarify: I *personally feel* like prior to this point, all of the "strong" female characters are the villains or antagonists.
Nicole, this project was fantastic! And may I add that it looks incredibly beautiful on you.
You are a magnificent Maleficent! Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney movie, mostly because of the gorgeous stylized aesthetic.
I click the thumbs-up on all of Nicole's videos even before the intro even finishes, because I mean... it's inevitable so why wait?
Purple fur would have evoked Jim Henson more than Disney!
On my third viewing
1) to listen as I clean my craft area
2) watch so I can see what you’re doing/showing
3) to absorb all the info/history
First the Ertè coat, now historically accurate Maleficent! You're making my fangirl heart sing! Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain by far. Looking forward to next week's video! Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
Every part of this is so elegant and incredible! I absolutely love the dagging and that shade of purple!
oh that sleeve design is incredible!!!!! absolutely gorgeous, and still reminiscent of Maleficent's outfit
This was so cool Nicole! I wonder what a historically accurate Little Mermaid would look like.
1836-7 ooo that'd be interesting!
You know, I completely forgot that she has legs for most of that movie and just thought...fish haven’t changed that much...right?
I would LOVE to see her pink dress remade!
@@andtuf that made me laugh so loud! Thank you.
While not historically accurate, it's SNL after all, I love Harry Styles as Ariel. I'd love to see her human dresses historically accurate.
If I might make a recommendation to anyone interested in listening to the older Sleeping Beauty stories on youtube, A Bit Late and A Bit Frank does ASMR 'bedtime stories'. You can hear Talia and the Moon, and other iterations on her channels. She is so great!!!
Oh my gosh. I am stunned!!! This is so beautiful!! Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney movie, so to see Maleficent come to life is so cool!! Thank you🖤💜
Info AND a sewing vid?!
Those sleeves are awesomeeeeee!
I'm so excited for this project!! I need to learn how to make a houppelande for my SCA persona.
Oooh, I love this. It looks incredible, that purple taffeta and the pleating! Beautiful job! 🖤💜🖤
I'm just gonna sit here and fan girl over how kick ass a historically accurate Maleficent! 🤯💙🙀👏🏽Those sleeve are giving me life!!!
I'm new to sewing, and I am fascinated by how you anchored your gathering stitches with a pin. I will be trying this at home. Mind. Blown.
Houpe-houpe-horray! As a beginner early-15th century-reenactor I am so delighted by your project
absolutely stunning
Can I just say, seeing all the hair/lint on the wool as you worked with it made me feel better about my life. Nothing in my house is safe from pet hair
Hi,love the way you choose to be an anti-princess, the costume is stunning and so very majestic.
Lovely, just lovely! The drama, the sleeves, the coziness!
I ended up with a whole bunch of SCA books around 14 years old and read them EXTENSIVELY; I've always wanted a houppelande. I'll file your tips into that corner of my brain.
i love hearing you work along with your soothing voice / background music
Sooooo I'm doing medieval reenactment almost for 10 years now. And first thing that I dreamed of sewing when I started doing reenactment of course was a massive silk or at least wool houppelande. But of course at the time it was too expensive for me. Now that years have passed, I've noticed that I still don't have a houppelande that I want in my medieval wardrobe. But then you made this beautiful video and a beautiful houppelande and reminded me of my dreams that I now am able to fulfil! So thank you for your work and for inspiring people!
Music teacher 🤌🏻 (Chef’s kiss) of approval for the music choices again, especially during the reveal. 💯
The word that comes to mind for me looking at the historical representations is "sumptuous" and I definitely think that's appropriate for Maleficent! Really stunning work!!
Really loved the deep dive into the history of the story and character!
Dagging is such a beautiful technique, and I love the way you trimmed the lining together. Beautiful!!!
Perfect character!!!
She’s my favorite villain.
I’m loving the historical Disney.
The research reminded me of Stitch in Time and the green houpellande made for Amber, which was amazing. AAHHHHH!!! You just mentioned it, too!!!
Even "Once Upon A Dream" was also Tshaickovsky. They just wrote lyrics to his original waltz and made the necessary technical score alterations to turn it from an orchestral waltz to an Operatic duet which must accommodate a central vocal line.
That purple silk is gorgeous.... This is lovely. Thank you for sharing it.
Where on earth do you keep all these amazing creations?! I have enough trouble accommodating my winter coats, can’t begin to imagine how much wardrobe space malificent takes up.
Talent and speed! Beyond impressed and this costume turned out Fantastic! Absolutely love it 😍
My first thought when you said this was that episode of A Stitch in Time, with the Van Eyck painting. I'm so here for all of this, and I can't wait to see what you do with the headpiece.
I loved that one! How they used the linen to set those pleats was just brilliant.
I love it but now you need to make the hat!!!! You are certainly talented enough. I have been sewing for 50 years and I can’t image hand sewing this type of project. It’s gorgeous.
Wow, what an ensemble!! This beautiful, dramatic thing was well worth all the research - fantastic work! ✨
I love the richness of the purple silk taffeta! it is gorgeous, and it looks beautiful against the stark black of the wool broadcloth!
maleficent has always been my favorite disney character! as someone with no knowledge of historical fashion i’m surprised her outfit is so accurate. the houppelande looks amazing and i love the sleeves 💜
One of the BEST Maleficent Cosplays ever!! She's my favorite Fairytale & Disney Villain!!!!
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen!!! Maleficent is my favourite character, I can't wait to see the whole reveal. Love your channel!
Your craftsmanship and artistry is absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing your skill with all of us on ye olde interwebs :)
My favorite villain ever. Her posture is amazing.
oh that purple is so luscious! This is just so amazing!! Looking forward to the headwear! I'm in the SCA and a friend earlier in the year was elevated for her amazing work on Chinese cooking and her outfit was a Maleficent cosplay too, using the colours to invoke her character while her outfit was still HA!
This is so beautiful! I got goosebumps watching the final result!
