The best feature of HnG was all the slots on vehicles, you could have like 8 people ride a jeep or have people pile on some random tractor you found.

the end of heroes and generals was the worst but also the most beautiful moments i have ever seen in gaming.
i was there when the servers shut down and without any planning everybody in the map ended up meeting together at the big church and we just had fun, shot in the air and talked . i think it were around 60 people there both enemy and allied. in the 45 min that i was there i only died 3 times because of an enemy plane bombing in all the 45 minutes that i was there. we partied with the "'enemy"' for 45 min until the game shut down permanently .
just the harmony of enemies laying down their weapons to say goodbye to heroes and generals together.
i have screenshots of the moment and i will forever cherisch this beautiful moment in my gaming history!
i will also forever miss my favorite shooting game and there also will never be a game like it.

Former member of the development team. 13:50 is not true.
Heroes & Generals 1 was losing money still, despite only having a few team members left. It costed more money to keep the servers up than it was making.
The decision was made to close H&G 1 and then after discussing it quite a bit a decision was made to try the kickstarter and see how it would go.
But from what I understand and I wasn't involved in the meeting themselves. The initial idea was to just close the game and never even attempt H&G 2.
This is also why the promotional material from H&G 2 was so basic and a lot of things were in fact store bought. It was an extremely extremely early version and probably would have been scrapped and rebuild from the ground had H&G 2 made it. Which while a member of the team, I knew 2 million wasn't going to happen.
UA-cams weren't specifically blamed for the kickstarter failing, or maybe it was I left the company while the kickstarter was running. But some youtubers were spreading a lot of misinformation which was very frustrating. Kickstarter would not have made it either way even without this misinformation.
I can also say that espesially during 2015-2019 something like that the amount of bad decision was rampant. After half the team was cut, there was some restructuring. But by then so much stuff was hard-coded and the team had lost such a big part of it's members, that there was just no fixing it anymore. Not even to mention that the engine and software that was used was terribly outdated by that time.
I will always say that the passion from the developers and supporting team was always there till the very end. But internal communication was very poor. Feedback from the players while processed by the community team, was... well I still don't know where that ended up.
One other note was that H&G 2 was done by TLM Partners. Which had only taken over H&G since 2022.
While the development team was mostly still the same as it was with RETO MOTO (at least the below 10 people left) the decisions around H&G 2 were made by the management of TLM.
I actually got a warning for being transparent around the Kickstarter, which is when I decided I had enough. Because the players were begging for more info and the company was telling me to keep my mouth shut and then I really just could not function in my job anymore.

In the beginning I loved the game. I played mostly U.S. my character was Ist Blood. I must of spent Thousands on the game. The game really was ahead of its time. With the option to play in game or supply the troops the gamers needed as a General was next level.
For me the downside was ques for important battles. Often it was clans in a certain time zone able to manipulate the server to play on their ping. The ability to pick the cities or towns to engulf troops was a huge turn off after a while. I even felt bad doing it to others but that was the system.
Many newer players lost a lot both on the map as well as in game due to clans. The game should of only picked randomly.
Another problem was the lack of maps. There were a lot of players who played hours a day and it got really repetitive and boring with limited a.ount of maps. When you fought at a capital city it was no different then a town, although line skirmishes were a bit different.
I mean you play for 4years and there is no different maps really. We change games as people because we want something new. Changing a uniform or a skin on truck did little to for me.
Many players talked about new classes but we never got much of that. Again like the author said Reto did not really listen towards the end. When there is a big group of players who play all factions looking suggesting ideas and telling then what's wrong, you would think someone would listen.

I miss this game so much.
My favorite thing to do in this game was to equip an AT-rifle and a wrench. Take out tank tracks and kill the driver when they come out to repair. FREE TANK!
The tank play in the game was so good. I loved the fact that the only way you could go 3rd person was to reveal yourself by unbuttoning the hatch and sticking you head out.
Maybe its a good thing its gone for me at least, it is the only game with microtransaction that I actually bought.

Yeah I did really like the game, it was so dynamic and naturally regulated because peoples equipment came from their pocket. You COULD keep spawning in tanks/gear because it raises your K/D but it sure hurts your wallet if you get outplayed, you could ram your plane into an infantry soldier or use it simply to paratroop, but again, your funding is hurt (and RTS supply)
I feel like people actually put thought into using equipment/vehicles because they were limited, and the individual player saw the impact of it. There were no real caps on having a whole lobby of pilots or tankers but if you run out of planes and have no one to defend your tanks you're fucked lmao.
If there's anything I miss from the game its the economic system (soldier rank/pay & kill's) and logistics, that an also its wonkiness' gave it that charm you're talking about.
It's something that is just missing from other war games that when I play them its like there's this itch that needs to be scratched but just can't.

My US paratrooper had some insane lore, during one battle on the large city map with bridges (I forgot what the map was called) we were fighting in a world war battle that lasted hours with entire waves of players coming and going. Me and some other paratroopers jumped right in during the climax of the fight to take the 01 cap to try and get that decisive game ending move but the drop was heavily botched and a lot of us ended up getting separated or killed. I ended up having to just leg it when a Panther starts rolling down the street toward us and I had to just start weaving through buildings when suddenly the fighting just sort of stopped. The gun fire just died out and people just stopped shooting for whatever reason. At this point I just kind of had that ODST moment of wandering around enemy territory by myself until I ran into another friendly paratrooper and we tried to make our way back to friendly lines.
Its been about 5 or 6 years now since this match so I don't remember the exact details and honestly I don't even remember who won but this one moment just really stuck out to me. Even with it's faults I still think H&G was one of the best WW2 games out there and it's a shame that the devs became the greedy bastards that they were

    • @karacreed0723
      @karacreed0723 5 місяців тому +8

Mine had some huge lore too (I still remember his name lol, Lukas 'Kara' Jansen)
One time in war mode, this guy comes up and gets shot right infront of him, he grabs the rocket launcher he dropped, gets hit twice and somehow survives, retreats, heals, and literally hides in waves of fellow soldiers to get close to some tanks and attack. Got one, had to retreat from the other but not before damaging it severely
Bro then ran out of ammo in his primary, gets in a bike and retreats only to end up behind like two rookie snipers and wack 'em in the back of the head and steal their rifles for their own
And I kid you not, I somehow, without even having the sniper class unlocked, playing as infantry without any sniper-related skills, managed to counter-snipe 5 times before getting strafed by a fighter plane

H&G absolutely killed it with combined arms matches, where both sides had tanks and planes. However true fun began with asymetrical warfare. Nothing better than army of 2k manpower supported by tanks and planes could be fucked up badly by team with 200 infantry, who knew the map, had enough cunning and fight in them and enough Panzerfausts and bicycles with them, to hold the line. This game was just different.

But they kept messing with things that didn't need messing with and changed the whole experience and then after doing that they turned around and ridiculously monetized the game
I probably spent $200 in those 2 years.

This was my favorite game growing up I’ve sunk 1000 hours in it and got every soldier and almost all the guns upgraded and had every tank and plane without veteran or a bunch of in game purchases. I stopped playing for years then got back a month before it unfortunately was removed and sadly there were barely any players so I wasn’t able to get one last game. The memory’s I’ve had on this game were wonderful it’ll always hold a special place in my heart and I don’t know if I’ll ever find a game like it. I hope there will some day be a second I’d happily pay for it if people played it

Here´s an old comment i made from a year ago.
Over the years from 2017 to 2020 Many of the big clans tried to do a Q&A with the devs with No luck as our requests would constantly be declined and later ignored by a certain God of the underworld. No hard feelings. We the clans all held community events on Discord that most of the community participated in. giving a sense of community and friendship. These events were held on the war map on battlefields far away from any significant Key objective or choke points.
We as a community tried to do our best to interact with the devs in a friendly manner. It´s true the H&G community was toxic we all knew it but for most clans there were no toxicity of any kind. and tried our outmost to interact and integrate new players to our game we loved and spent hundreds or even thousands of hours in.
Bigger clans got gold codes for free from the devs. Reason behind it is unknown. Maybe they saw that we tried our best for the game and community with our guides and other interactions with new players or it was bribes for something larger at play.
Before the introduction of the Soviet Union The community thrived especially on the Generals side of the game. Most players really fought their hardest to achieve victory.
With the arrival of the soviets we the veteran players who have played the longest and players who had spent a certain about of money into the game, We thought that the devs would reward us with free soviet Generals so that war faction could have some kind of foundation. Sadly we were told 3 days before it´s release that it would not be the case. Many felt forced to buy Soviet Generals if we wanted to play them actively on the war map and about a week later there was a discount of like 50 or 75% for generals and other minor war units. That was pretty much the only sale on generals until the end of the game.
The Soviets would become my main faction trough the years and i had so much fun i will never forget it. The introduction of the PTRD for the first time was insanely fun yet really annoying of the opposite factions until they themselves got an Anti-tank Rifles. PTRD one shot planes and pretty much all other vehicles except for tanks.
Later the nerf of Anti tank rifles and introduction of vehicle components made things different.
The introduction of the soviets broke the entire balance off the game in the long term of all the Wars.
Most players played Axis and Allies with the third of the player base or even less than that on the Soviets. The early soviet wars were pretty much Defeat after defeat until we the hardcore fans were able to build a foundation on the war map.
Later with time Many clans started rotating their factions as it started to get boring wining or losing every war they had for their main factions.
Throughout the years i think soviets had an exp boost when playing war that was on 50% as lowest and up too 85% experience gained due to the lack of players and too help players to rank up their soldiers.
Something the community craved was new maps we rarely had anything new from the release of H&G in 2016 to its final rest (RIP)
Some of the older maps were reworked etc. But Reto-moto had the assets and resources to make new maps we just did not get any.

We the players of the H&G community only wanted one thing from the devs regarding updates, roadmap, news etc. Was transparency.
Many myself included felt abandoned. We truly loved the game. Otherwise why did we play it ?
An article came up back in 2018 - 2019 that reto-moto was bankrupt or something regarding a scandal of some kind. the community at the time asked a lot of questions regarding it on the forums but posts were deleted and discussions regarding it was closed and locked. All we got was silence. Weeks later the article was gone. The news article was from a gaming news site. were it was based i do not recall but i could guess it was in Denmark.
This is my story and experience, I had played actively pretty much every day since 2015 until 2021- 2022. I have over 2000 hours into the game and probably 1000-1500 US Dollars invested.
Feel free to call me out for any bullshit or other issue i stated in this comment.
But this is the truth for me and many others of my friends who played this wonderful game.
Here´s a comment from another person who replied on my comment.
Thanks for sharing your experience, that was really interesting ! It made me remember some good times I had on the game as well. By the way, I don't recall at all this scandal you are talking about, it sounds really interesting and shady.
I remember playing HnG shortly after it came out in late 2014. I haven't played it on a regular basis like you but I came back to the game every 6-ish months to have an intense week or two playing the game and grinding for some weapon or tank. In 9 years, I practically only played U.S army.
But the experience was different at some times. The time period where I played the most was around early 2015 and must've been like 12 at the time. I vividly remember having nothing on my mind except HnG during that time. Looking back at it, I really was some sort of a god damn crack addict that couldn't think about anything else and having some sort of "craving" when I didn't play this game for so long. Coming back from school and nothing in life mattered but playing HNG. This was worsened by the fact that since I was a casual gamer and also just a child, everytime I "craved" the game and went to play it, I often rage quit and freak out after 1 or 2 games because some things weren't balanced such as one shot-kill rifles.
The moment I learned to chill the f out, I began to enjoy the game and when it came to a bit more balance (especially the vehicle damage revamp) the grind sessions were bountiful and the game much more enjoyable, but still, the p2w experience was too strong. I remember that my favourite playstyle was to pick infantry, mounting that scope on the Garand. It enabled a very fun and versatile playstyle that I really enjoyed. That was the vast majority of my gameplay, but when I had enough I'd just whip out the thompson or johnson MG and blast.
Having to grind an ungodly amount of time to earn a MILLION silver coins (I don't remember the name of the game's currency) made me felt like the devs wanted to build this kind of wall between the players that paid and the players that didn't. I think it's the reason I began to play less and less.
I do believe I started to play much less often around 2018-2019 and cut down the frequency to maybe one or two sessions per year (3 or 4 games) but still had fun some times. Overall, I think that the community was not bad. I didn't hang around during clan events since I didn't participate in those things but I do remember making some friends on this game.
Finally, I was quite shocked and a bit saddened to see that the game was closing but didn't even bother to enjoy the last moments of the game when it came to its very end in May of 2023. Sometimes I kinda regret it, but I think that for now, what matters is to remember and share some memories with the people that enjoyed the game as much as I did!!

Wasn’t the scandal about the „War Bonds” feature?
I think they got sued from the Danish government because its illegal in Denmark to sell War bonds or to name them like that. (I am not sure if this is correct, I just remember it like that)
But the Danish laws were the reason why the war bonds feature was disabled. (Sadly, in my opinion)
      Let’s add more comments:
Based on my first Steam screenshot I started playing May 2016 but I’m pretty sure I played with the non-steam launcher before that. It was my first shooter and is the shooter I miss the most. I never participated in Clan events I just played with a small group of friends later I played alone because they all switched games or stopped playing. At the late phases I only played irregular and mostly when updates were released to look what they changed and if it was a good change…
But especially in the late phase (maybe 2020 until the end) I got on the Prototype servers a lot and looked a lot in the easily accessible files and command line. With the command line I tried a lot of things out. I even made some 8k voxel traced Screenshots which look nice (but the framerate was unplayable at those settings so no real combat). And yes, the game had voxel tracing which is an alternative to ray tracing, and the Render resolution was fully customizable.
The Engine also supported a replay system which I never got working (probably dev version only).
I played mostly US and later started GE and at the end I even had like 3 or 4 SU Soldiers. I never had a general but on US and GE like three lieutenants each, for RTS gameplay, but hated the lack of an APP or Browser based war map that I can manage when away. Flying planes was great for me when every faction only had one plane.
I hope that there will be a HnG like game at some point again, currently I play a lot Enlisted, but this game isn’t like HnG. (I even tried to replace some Enlisted sounds with some from HnG, but they don’t really fit into the game…)

I don't deny the issues you talk about and the lack of trust the developer cultivated, but honestly even post 2018 the game was still incredibly fun. I actually really loved the new gunplay they added then, as it felt both snappy but also you actually had to put some thought into it, modding your weapons for certain stats, having to lead your shots, or deciding whether to just hipfire or aim down sights. Enlisted just doesn't feel the same in this way, thanks to the way its weapons work. There was just so much unique about the game otherwise, from the RTS wars to everyone hopping in one truck to people sneaking an APC around the back and steal capping a point, to those hour long matches where neither team could exactly win and it was a war of attrition. It was a game where you alone could absolutely change the tide of the battle if you were good enough, but that also required and rewarded teamwork to effectively make it through and win the match, in a way few other games I've found can say the same.

Facing Tanks and planes as only infantry, with no tools to counter it.
    The ABYSMALLY slow progression.
and that is just naming a few major ones. But getting to play paratroopers, and seeing the panic in the enemy's eyes when you come at them with a knife in close range, with no melee option if they didn't bring their own knife and shovel. Those two things kept me coming back.

7:17 The Garman and spawn protection updates happened so you couldn’t spawn at control points anymore but only between ones you controlled and people quickly exploited knowing where the defender spawns were; rendering the “spawn protected” zones more harmful than good.
Also the map update that came with Garman was kind of a cobbled together mess with fixes in place for stuff that wasn’t even present anymore (trenches where lines no longer went, walled up areas that technically no longer needed it, etc). Long story short, as one of the former Reto-Moto Insiders from 2017, the devs told us the Garman update was THE WORST decision they ever made and it had morale at an all time low (so far).
The update also removed the concept of X1 capture points between main objective locations; removing the buffer between capturing objectives on maps that have more than one major objective point requiring capturing by multiple lines.

I used to play the Sniper_vs_Sniper gamemode so much in this game. Back then the AI soldiers weren't running aimbots which could snipe you over 1 km away and they were barely a distraction. The scout cars from the Snipers were actually good and getting into a fight between 2 scout cars were one of the most fun things you could get into. It began to become a problem when they boosted the AI to be more anoing than most players and make the scout cars like they are made out of paper. I still played to the end and played mostly with a knife in the sniper mode (since I'm a knife main and I love sneaking up on enemies, even if I would just end up sitting next to them and spectate them like a "friendly enemy") but you could feel how they ruined the game.

One of the first games I've played on my first PC in 2016, it was an experience. I always tried to farm XP from people respawning on my trucks. I came back to it once on New Years Eve a few years back for an hour or two and it wasn't the same

Man. I got 900h+ in this game. What makes this game better than the others is the rts and supply system. Remember when the enemy has huge resources, but your team only has a bike and a jeep, but you still winning.. What the good feeling. Also, in this game, you can flank freely, not like enlisted where the area of the map is restricted. The only problem for me is the anti-aliasing of this game. It is kinda hard to see a long-distance enemy.

This game was so broken but incredibly fun, I miss the matches where both sides would get into a standstill and 1 match takes 3 hours to finish. Good times, met a lot of good people in this game

i remember one match well where me and another pilot managed to take out all the enemy planes and then we turned into basically cod killstreaks, other players giving squares where tanks or groups of enemies were and we would swoop in and bomb them
kind of sad that i havent really found another game where you have that kind of dedicated pilot roles in a match with vehicles+infantry too

Played this game since closed alpha and love it so much. Met the devs (rebjarne from reto) in person and spoke to them. I dont know why they made all those bad decisions because it really looked like the devs loved the game as well. It all really went down the drain when reto's team left and the new devs didnt know how to fix the mess

I miss this game, I was a free to play but I pushed, Grinded every now and then, I main Germany
I have some fond memories. Some remember dearly was
slipping past a Stuart in a trainyard on bike.
During a WAR battle I had found a Discarded enemy GAZ-67 with a machine gun on a hill.. You couldn't move it but It was an Amazing firing position, Flanked by trees on each side, Downrange I had a view between two houses, I mowed down a few assault teams, even a guy that tried to flank me through the forest to the left, before I was dislodged Via infantry support gun
I used to fly NoE on factory, getting danger close to the smokestacks to get Enemy Ace's off of me
then emergency land on a forested road to get out and repair my plane
I remember Sitting across the river In a panzer 4 on one of the town maps, Sending a round of HE Towards the objective

It took me a while to get into it, but when I actually started progressing, I just couldn't stop. For me it was infantry all the way, though, I dabbled in the plane department too. It's just with infantry, when you finally had a couple of leveled characters, you could switch based on the situation, and wreak havoc on the enemies. Just by yourself you really could have a big impact. The large maps also made very deep flanks possible, sometimes they would work out, sometimes you just wasted your time. But boy oh boy, when it worked, greatest feeling ever. May my peasant-characters rest in pieces.

I had a US character that I created back in 2014 and played until the game was shut down. I took him from Private to Major and very nearly got him to Lieutenant Colonel. He had so many weapons and gear unlocked and he was one of the few characters that I bothered to buy the expensive camo uniforms for. Ill always miss the battles we had.

it's kinda annoying that videos like this gain so many view towards the game BECAUSE it's now dead. If Redo or TLM actually advertised the game maybe it would still be alive now (no hate towards the video, just pointing out that the game could've used views like this before dying)

I remember playing it back in 2014 and enjoying it. But ranking up and getting XP to unlock new weapons and classes took forever and the game literally pushed you to open your purse and so I had three options: Spending a lot of money to really enjoy this game, start a years long grind to unlock only a small portion of what money would buy or quit completelly.
I quit in 2015 and never looked back. Seems like I was right about my decision.

I remember that I started playing somewhat around 2018, the amounts of hours I invested in this game, checking my steam I gave it 1.096 hours. I had good memories of it, cant remember the name of the map but I really liked the one that had a small bridge with a small building in the middle where you could pick up some PzFs 60. Loved the sound the Panther made when you shoot the main gun and all that stuff, and what I really loved was when the battles took like an hour or more and when there was some great teamwork

It was a huge insult to the playerbase when they just randomly stopped supporting the game and shut down the servers.

I have so many fond memories of the game and I’m sad that it went out the way it did. I’m still proud of what I was able to contribute to the game (the Game Flow update and Colmar Hamlet) but, I just wish I could have done more.
4:21 since I’m not bound by NDA anymore, they allegedly had Amazon money as their backing. The Hacksaw Ridge promo to introduce medics was a cute little tie-in and I wish they did more. The backers pulled out sometime around 2018 maybe 2019 and the 2020 pandemic/recession pretty much sealed the games fate.
The BIG factor that led to the decline was the seemingly complacent nature when it came to updating maps. I warned them COUNTLESS times that if they didn’t take improving the maps seriously or considered the feedback regarding it, it would lead to a slow bleed because the incentive to buy new weapons would be lost because there were no new map locations to push the weapons potential and performance. There was a bigger Russia update with Brest (like the one Enlisted just got) but it never saw fruition but the fortress itself had a model but the terrain around it wasn’t finished when I saw it back in 2017. The big issue is they moved resources to working on the Russia maps when the French ones were still in a messy state so they spread their resources thin and accomplished way less than they could with a focused team.
If you ever want to interview me about it, hit me up on Twitter or discord 🪖👍
