Colombia is currently dealing with a massive wave of refugees coming from Venezuela. Venezuelans are fleeing their home because of a severe economic crisis under President Nicolas Maduro. There are high inflation rates and there isn’t enough food available for people within Venezuela to even eat. Thousands of Venezuelans cross the Simon Bolivar bridge located at Cúcuta every day and Colombia doesn’t seem to be turning anyone way.
This borders episode looks at why Colombia doesn’t turn away these refugees, the shared history of the two nations and how there may be a limit to Colombia’s acceptance of incoming Venezuelans.
Vox Borders is an international documentary series by Emmy-nominated producer Johnny Harris exploring life at the edge of nations. For more, visit vox.com/borders.

While it's true that many Colombians settled in Venezuela in past decades when the Venezuelan economy was booming, the entrance into Venezuela wasn't that easy, not for Colombians or for any other citizen of any other country in Latin America, Venezuelans were extremely selective as to who they would allow to get into Venezuela, first of all you needed to have a visa and a bag full of money to begin with, it wasn't just as easy as just crossing a border as it's now, as I said before hundreds of thousands perhaps millions of Colombians settled in Venezuela but they trickled slowly through decades of migration into Venezuela, now days due to the impoverishment of the Venezuelan economy you have waves of millions of Venezuelans migrating to other countries all over the world, the absolutely most poor of them stay in Colombia since they don't have the means to go any further; many Venezuelans trek to Ecuador or Peru walking or hitching a ride if their lucky, but I repeat the absolutely most poor, elderly and sick stay in Colombia, I applaud Colombia for their generosity towards their neighbors, specially knowing that other countries in the region have closed their borders permanently to most Venezuelan immigrants. Colombia and Venezuela where once part of a same country, many consider themselves family, as a Colombian I feel proud to receive our neighbors into our country, we don't have much but we can share what we have. God bless them all.

It can work, but it needs to be without the aggressive far left doctrine that has failed in Venezuela. Not far right either. Just a moderate social democratic sort of approach, which focuses on economic development as the number one goal. They have somewhat of a head start, as Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela all have an abundance of mineral, human, and energy resources, you combine THAT with some sort of credit/window guidance approach as taken by the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Malaysians, and "gran colombia" will literally be, not only wealthy, but possibly one of the wealthiest countries in the world. These guys do not need to be poor and struggling, at all.

The means of production in Venezuela are mostly controlled by private capitalists.
Venezuela is being squeezed by the West because they want a regime change, and the West will likely get it.
Venezuela failed in actually implementing socialism, Chavez was collaborating with the capitalist class in order to bring social democratic reforms but he never actually took away the power capitalist had over the economy. This is why Venezuelan business class has collaborated in trying to bring Maduro down, in order to reverse the pro-worker reforms the party in power has done. The rich can easily ride out the crisis. Maduro of course is also far from blameless.

I have talked to Colombians and Venezuelans. And the Colombians are welcoming to the the Venezuelans. As at one time it was the opposite. When Colombia was rocked by drug cartels they fled to Venezuela. Now Venezuelan are asking for the past favor to be returned to them. As stated in this documentary. Colombia is a beautiful country and every one should experience it. Colombia is not as dangerous as you think. If you want safe go to Vietnam, where crime on a tourist is punishable by death. If you want the most polite people you will ever meet in your life go to the Bahamas. If you want museums, and amazing food go to Bogota, Colombia for a month and you will have something new to do and see every day. Mucho amor por Colombia. Yo amo Colombia.
