Thanks very much for making this, I can finally see the Bangor that my parents and my grandparents grew up in. I live just outside Bangor today and I actually wish the Bangor that are in these photos was still like that today as everything looks so much nicer. Once again, thanks.
Thanks for the post. Reminders of long ago 1960s summer holidays spent in Bangor at my grandparents are always welcome. Interesting choice of accompanying music.
Many thanks for this. I grew up in Bangor, left 1n '72 when I was 18. There have been major changes since then, not sure that I like it, but even after 40 years away, my heart is still in Bangor and I sill love the town and the people. Thanks again!
everywhere in Western Europe has it's fair share of 'dumps' and I presume you mean some of the estates around the peripheries of Bangor? You're probably right in that it is not the same as it was back in it's hey-day when it was a booming tourist seaside town. I remember the beach where the carpark is now and the little rowing boats. Now I know that all that nostalgia is sadly gone but Bangor is still a nice place as is ballyholme
Well done! Yes, it's The Kinks "Picture Book", an obscure album track from 1968. BTW, thanks for making some great, positive videos of N. Ireland. I'm a Saintfield man myself, but lived in Bangor for a while before moving to the USA and really appreciate your contributions on UA-cam.
DONNA DOUGLAS, I WAS BORN IN BANGOR, RUGBY AVE.MANY HAPPY TIMES LEFT TO GO TO ENGLAND WHEN I WAS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD TO START MY SINGING . MISS THE FRONT, MUCH BETTER AS IT WAS .GREAT PHOTOS DONNA
@voodoochilled1 Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I'm in Shelton Connecticut now but go back to Co. Down every few years. Most times I prefer to remember it as it was rather than how it is now, and strangely, Shelton is currently more like the Ireland of 30 years ago than Ireland is today. All the best!
Thank you. The photo you requested is available from The Belfast Telegraph online - Lifestyle section - photos of old Ulster -Bangor (UA-cam won't let me post the link directly)
I hope North Down Borough Council watches this video and sees just how they have turned Bangor into a dump! Yes, the Council! Between high rates that no small businesses can afford, and not investing public money into really what matters! Bangor USED to be the place to go! However, today, it is certainly the place to avoid! SHAME on NDBC and all those so called politicians involved! 90% of Bangor citizens are ashamed of their own Town! (sorry CITY!!!) EDIT: Bangor city....... more like Bangor SHI*TY!
Ironically, Bangor in County Down was probably the first bearing the name. All others are pale imposters! There is the one in Wales, one with a similar name in the Republic of Ireland and there are something like thirteen(!!) Bangors in North America! Including the famous town to which author Stephen King belongs in Maine, USA.
Love the postcards...my Gran and uncles Tommy & Bobby Robinson all born in Bangor. Gives me a good sense of what it was like in their youth.
