This is so good that I had to listen to it twice in a row. I know it was done in the 90s because he mentions the war in Kosovo. Every time I need a good laugh I am going to remember how to find this episode.
I REMEMBER THIS EPISODE FROM YEARS AGO! But I still LOVE remembering how life could have been worse. After a difficult session with our older batsh*t sister, who took charge, refused our help until Mom died, then blamed us because she forgot to pay the life insurance, (Mom had cancer, and was 83), well... I said to my younger sis, 'Wouldn't it be way easier if we just burn the house down? For very little money, I think we can talk the volunteer fire department into enthusiastically put out the fire, ignore that someone got the animals and humans out beforehand, and also forget the one who set the fire in the first place'. Then we both laughed, and then we both cried. Nobody had to evacuate the critters or call the FD. Gallows humor has its uses. And the music at Lake Wobegon was perfect.
Best practice I’ve learned in life, if only to save our humanity (and one’s own soul): Say ONE nice thing about someone, once you’ve forcefully publicly demonized them…
I lived in northern Minnesota and this was aired usually around noonish on Sunday. I'd get lunch after church and drive the 25 miles home listening to this. Sometimes I'd get to laughing so hard I'd have to pull over on side of the road. Enjoyable days I miss these programs on PBS radio.
