Allen Iverson was a ruthless ankle breaker and a revolutionary cultural icon | The Class of ’96

- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- On this episode of The Class of ’96, Bomani Jones looks at the life and career of Allen Iverson. Iverson was the smallest player ever to be selected with the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, but he left a massive imprint on the league. His scoring prowess, electrifying crossovers and fearlessness earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. And his unapologetic demeanor made him a cultural icon. Iverson never won a title, but fans will remember him as one of the most singular stars in NBA history.

Love this revisionist history by ESPN . When he was being vilified they reported and stated all the knocks on him. Never taking this view about him being an "icon" till he is long gone from the spotlight .

The arm sleeves you see everywhere, guys with a million tattoos, the dress code, he influenced a lot of the culture in the NBA. Respect to the legend and all time great AI.

Allen Iverson definitely is one of the most influential players of all time, people under appreciate how much he influenced a lot of players today. For sure my favorite player of all time.

All-time favorite player. Icon on and off. Changed the game. So much nostalgia. Watching every single 76ers game from 2000/01 onwards as a young kid. Iverson inspired beyond belief
Imagine A.I playing today. He'd be getting to the line more than anybody, and he would've beat up his body way less giving him better longevity. One of the best ever
Word. I'd say he averages about 37 to 38 ppg. Nothing above that. Still a beast either way.💯🐐🏀
He'd have better longevity because of officiating. Read somewhere the other day that the 76ers would hide Iverson's jersey because they don't want him to play due to injuries, but every now and then he'd still find it and suit up. If he's still active, he'd go against load management.
HE WOULD BE A BETTER SHOOTER TOO LOL
@@brandonethereal1084 yeah facts bro iverson would definitely torch this current league and would probably win at least 10 scoring titles
The man was so influential that it is crazy to look back and realize what the league looked like before him. Not only was he 100% true to himself, he had an all-time motor. He never got a chip but he always fought. Getting that one on the Shaq and Kobe Lakers was a feat few teams in history could have done.
He proves you don't need a ring to be a champion. One of the all time greatest. He dominated in a big man league at 6ft, 165lbs. That's incredible.

Iverson is the greatest normal sized human being in NBA History.
Dude was 5’11’ on a good day and he was almost always the best player of the court.
Also he was cool and badass. Baggy clothes, chains, hip hop attitude, tattoos.
didnt try to be anyone else... great man and player
I thought he was 6'1
Legend has it he was about 5'9, without shoes. He really was a freak athlete. No way he was a full 6ft.
I stood about 3 ft from A.I. at the 2001 ASG in DC, I'm 5"-11", A.I. is every bit of 5'-10" maybe 5'-11"
I think you've put it the best. There has not been a better 6fter in NBA history.

Kids dont realize the icon this man was/is
facts, not winning a ring has deluded this generation into believing you’re not good
Kids from in and around Philly still know. I got to meet him when I was younger at a 76ers event and was amazed at his size and how he would go up against the centers every night, blew mind
The blessing of being a 90s baby. We respects the older player because our favourites respected and modeled their games after them. Plus we can appreciate the new kids as we get to watch their careers from start to finish.
@@presidentialkingdom2201 he was way better than Kobe Bryant plus Allen Iverson is underrated by casuals he wont be loved until he died

pretty much every dude in the hood was trying to be AI when i was a kid
This guy was the reason I cut long socks for sleeves, tried to grow my hair out, scored so many points in the game of 21 from that one crossover they consider carrying now. This dude was my idol.
Yeah, I got my first and only set of corn rows because of him.
My idol. Even today as a 26 yr old, I fangirl Iverson to no end. He's the spark that ignited my love for basketball and furthermore inspired me to always give life my best shot. I'm happy to see that ESPN and other platforms still show him love.

How is being yourself an act?
what? what does that even mean? There are millions of rules about what you can wear.... you can't even wear an upside-down headband... or a bandaid with a name on it.... "play how they wanna play", doesn't even mean anything. The crossover was never illegal.
You wanna talk about influence? The crossover, the headband/arm sleeve, the tattoos, and the cornrows. All of those are now mainstream because of Iverson.
He’s the reason I started watching NBA
You know why !!!
Cause he’s the Answer
His style and dressing back then is still dope in today’s context
No NBA star or star in general has ever been more real to themselves while it was most profitable to be not real.
I like how emotional he often is. I like how real he is. He was the opposite of the fakeness that we live in where everyone is putting out what they want you to believe about them rather than showing who they are.
I would say Tim Duncan has been one too
Well said 💯
Fuk 12 teams passing on Kobe a franchise traded him w/o him ever suiting up for them.
I wish the media gave him this much love when he was actually playing 🤷🏽♂️
A.I is arguably the most exciting and dynamic guard hiis size in nba history.
The day this man passes away, I’m going to cry like a baby.
Don’t even think negative
Iverson is your favorite player's favorite player. Kawhi loves Iverson. He didn't root for the Lakers. When Iverson entered the league, true hip hop culture in the NBA was born. We wouldn't have SLAM magazine without him.
He was Lebron a favorite player as well (other than mj)
Um.. slam magazine started in 94 my guy...
Fab Five gave us the first glimpse of 90s basketball. Remember the long shorts and black shoes and socks? Iverson took it to the streets. When hip hop and street cred "crossed over" to mainstream sports thanks to him.

Iverson vs Harden
Discuss
Better offensive force is Harden, but bigger motor and heart? AI every day, he played on some bad teams and still went out every game against the 7ft'ers and took it to them. He didn't show up to a season out of shape and demand a trade, plus he was a ball hawk on defense. Harden gets a handful of steals because people think he is lazy and doesn't play D so he luls guys into thinking they can get it by him
Iverson no questions asked
@@brianmurray6261 Harden better offensive force. I don't think so...maybe equals to a certain extent. Harden plays with better players. A.I. played the majority of his career with SCRUBS !
