Mario bros became so incredibly successful because there were almost no other titles that could seriously compete with it. Mario Bros came out the perfect time, when the demand for video games was rapidly on the rise but the production had just collapsed and was in no state to deliver on that demand.
I disagree completely. Mario didn't lead to COD. That would be Duke Nukem (1991), Wolfenstein 3D (1992) and Doom (1993). Those were all originally computer games, not console games. That is where your FPS games originated. WoW also...computer related. Mario Bros definitely brought back/saved the home video game console though.
