    I have a 25hp Toro front mount tractor with a 60" finish flail mower. I've mowed material as tall as 9ft, and turn right around and mow my lawn with it... leaves the best stripes in the neighborhood. It's the single most versatile and best performing mower I've ever owned.

      When you say lawn.... how low can your flail go to the ground? Also... where in the world are you based? That will tell me how lush and thick your grass can get - here in Ireland our grass is far too healthy, moist and thick to seriously consider a flail for lawns.... as much as I'd love one

    Nice equipment, nice job done. We leave the bucket on too, both as a counterbalance and also to push over the more robust weeds or saplings. That helps protect the belly of the machine. Plus I'm too lazy to take it off . . .

    I still love it. The flail mower is my go-to mower for most of my non-yard mowing needs. It is great for mowing trails.

      I've got one as well and one thing bugs me: the flattened grass by the tires lays flat and gets up later being cut longer than between the tires. How do 'deal' with that? And did you remove the rubber flap above the roller or didn't it have one? I'm thinking about removing mine now that i see how evenly the cut grass spreads out on your flail.

    Great demo thanks. I just decided after watching this that a flail mower will be best for me rather than a slasher - a slasher is what Australians call a brush hog.

    I have a 6' Land Pride flail and love it. But clogs the discharge with grass if I have the gate opened. I Found that it is better to leave the gate closed and go slow so that the mower can chop up all the tall grass. But they are an AWESOME IMPLEMENT.

    There are also good reasons to like the conventional rotary topper (brush hog). 1) Cheap. 2) They are so simple there is almost nothing to go wrong or need maintenance. 3) Only two blades to sharpen that can be done in 5 minutes by lowering it onto axle stands and popping under with an angle grinder. 4) When you have finally worn the blades out a new set is about £15 and are quick to fit. 5) It can be slid under low-hanging branches and into the bottom of hedges where the flail would be too short to reach. 6) The flat area can be used to shift stuff about saving the need to swap to the back box in many cases. 7) With the blades sharp you can put a finish like a lawn mower on flat areas (after all they are just a giant rotary mower) - yes, hammer flails can match the finish but Y flails can't. BTW - not all bush hogs have rear jockey wheels - here in the UK they are an option that most don't bother to buy.
    Mine is 21 years old and has only needed one set of new blades and has chewed on concrete blocks, truck parts, bicycles and high-voltage porcelain insulators (the latter thoughtfully left for me to find by the electricity company). If I bought a flail it would be a collector flail but they are stupidly expensive. You can't cut a meadow with a flail unless it's a collector as the fine chopped arisings can't be raked off and will rot down and enrich the soil - quite the last thing you want in a traditional wildflower meadow!

    I'd like to put it on the front. There are only a few mowers that I know does this at the moment; John Deere golf course mowers, Ventrac, and a few European brands.

    You might consider getting an offset. flail mower, extends out one side or the other a couple of feet. That way your rear tire is more centered in your cut it also makes maneuvering in and around landscaping,trees and fence rows much easier.

  • @richardwilliams3152

    As much as I agree with most of your "reasons" 1) Running that thing open like that isn't safer than a properly equipped brush hog (mine has chains front and rear) 2. If you were really concerned with maneuverability you would take that front loader off and replace it with weights or fill the front tires with water if needed.

    Eric G, My model is a BEFCO H40. I searched and searched and BEFCO was the only company I could find that had a 4' model that was rated to my 18 PTO HP. Actually, it is rated to a mere 15 PTO HP. Eventually I was able to order one through BEFCO directly, and I would like to start operating as an online dealer for them given my own experiences. Perhaps you could find a dealer that would be willing to ship one to your address. They are made in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

    Any of you all hit rocks with your flails? Like.. larger rocks that were hidden in brush? How do they hold up? Only thing keeping me from buying one

    • @sohomesick1
      @sohomesick1 3 роки тому +2

      They hold up very well as the blades/hammers are just hanging loosely from the center shaft if you hit something the blades/hammers just swivel back out of the way then when clear centrifugal force pulls them back out fully, no damage.
      I am using a 30+ year old Mott fail mower that I bought surplus from a golf course. I just do regular maintenance and it has held up well. I did change out the blades for hammers. As Im maintaining old hilly cow pastures with the dreaded blackberry bushes and it pulverizes them very well.
      One thing thing to mention is a lot of the flail mowers have their shaft and their bades turning forward which is why you get such a good looking cut as your grass usually cut at least twice mulching it very fine. Flail mowers never need to bag.

    just ordered the Betstco 37" for my 1023E, thought about the 41", but decided not to push the PTO limit, plus it;s not like I'm ever clearing a huge area, maybe an acre at most at any one time and usually less. Kind of wish I had done some more research before I bought the rotary cutter 6 months ago. Can't remember if it was on your reasons, but storage as well, that rotary cutter takes up a bunch of space.

    • @Noah_E
      @Noah_E 2 роки тому

      Have you ever used a flail mower or are you confusing them with a bush hog? One of the main pluses of a flail is that it doesn't turn rocks into bullets. They are thrown down, to the ground instead of out. That's what makes them great for use along roads and between buildings where you don't want projectiles flying

  • @andrewbrenneman3782

    why not remove the loader for mowing or tilling. it would make maneuvering easier. How do you like that brand of flail???? Just curious

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  7 років тому +1

      I certainly could do that, but you do need some weight up front to balance out the machine. As to your second question, I absolutely love this mower. It is sturdy, well made and always gets the tough job done. It has become my go-to mower for difficult situations. For example: as of late we have been pounded by heavy rains--in the vicinity of 14 inches in about 10 days, perhaps even more. The grass is incredibly long and I will get out the flail mower to mow down my overgrown trails to look like a nice, mown carpet once again.

    • @andrewbrenneman3782
      @andrewbrenneman3782 7 років тому

      When looking at flail mowers. Did you go straight to Befco or shop around at different brands? I have a 6' LandPride (FL2172) and get an excellent mowing, but the bar over the roller catches grass clumps and locks the roller. But I have been going to it more so my 20 year old 5' rotory mower (windrows grass on left of mower).

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  7 років тому +2

      I shopped around, but I had some pretty tight constraints. I was not going to buy a flail mower unless I could cut our my own tires. For me, this meant that 48" was the bare minimum. Secondly, I needed a mower that could do this with only 18 PTO HP (my 2305 PTO rating). I found numerous flails that were shorter that my 4' minimum, including one that was a mere 36 inches. The BEFCO was the only mower that I could find that fit both constraints--48" and low PTO requirements. Turns out that the BEFCO only needed 15 PTO HP. For me, this made it a no-brainer. Another aspect that I was attracted to was the fact that I could get paddle blades. For me, this means that I can use this as a finish mower. "Y" blades certainly do their job well, but I did not want that combed look on my lawn. The paddle blades leave an extremely level cut. The paddle blades are also no slouch when I am going over rough/weedy/brambly areas. I personally wonder why anyone would want the "Y" blades when the paddle blades are an option, but that is just my personal opinions and others may not feel this way.

      Small Trac- How easy is it to change knives on that mower? I've changed all of my knives once on my LandPride. Kind of a pain in the ass. I enjoy your tractor vids.

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the compliment on the tractor vids. To date I have not changed the knives so I have no first-hand knowledge of this aspect. I imagine that this is no task you take on lightly or do for minor reasons. What made you change your knives? Did they wear out or did you change to another style of knife? I do know that when I ordered from BEFCO, they had to add an extra delay to allow for the proper knives to be attached. This might be the single biggest drawback to a flail mower, but it certainly is not a job you do very often.

    Looking into one of these myself. What's the toughest stuff it's been able to handle? I have a field overgrown with saplings anywhere from 1 to 3" and I know a bush hog can get it. I just really do not like how the bush hog can't cut as close to the ground as I'd like.

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  7 років тому +1

      This will take on up to 1" saplings. If you really need to go after lots of woody debris I would recommend hammer blades. If can get the saplings down, then a flail mower is fantastic for keeping new growth in check.

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  6 років тому +2

      These blades are actually dull, much like the blades of a rough cutter. This is so that they don't chip when they hit something more solid than a stick. I have never had to sharpen these blades and in fact they don't look much different now than when I first bought them. There are dedicated finish mowing blades that are sharp, but those are a much more high-maintenance blade than I wanted. Hope this helps.

    There are many different brands, the better ones in my opinion, come from Europe where they are more common than our bush hog style cutters. I have a Caroni 60" that I got from AgriSupply and absolutely love it. It has 86 flails, which is more than most flail mowers of that size and it gives a beautiful cut. I have taken down 5' tall Goldenrod and heavy grass and recently I opened up a horse riding trail and what I did was hand cut the small brush and branches and dropped it in the trail and then mowed over it, it was leaving mulch behind. I then backed into thorn brush, blackberries and other small stuff up to about 1" and it took it all down. For me I find that if I leave the mower on the ground and back over things it bends the brush backwards and cuts off a certain amount, but then when I pull forward everything is pulled up into the flails and it cuts leaving nothing behind.
    One trick is getting the top link right so that you are putting the weight of the mower on the rear roller and not pitching forward too much, or so that you are hitting the skid shoes if you have them. You really want it to be level. I added a HydraLink which is a self contained hydraulic top link that acts like a shock absorber and takes out a lot of the thrusting from the top link to the tractor, rides much better and smoother. You have to get one of them, about $200 and you'll be glad you did. If for nothing else than you can adjust the top link in about 5 seconds.
    Check out the Caroni and AgriSupply and I think you will be pleased they have several different size machines and I think they ship fee or for free for the first X miles. Great people to do business with. I was able to drive to one of their stores, but I have read about them shipping implements all over the US.

    • @smalltrac504
      @smalltrac504  8 років тому +1

      My thoughts are much the same as yours. I have not tried the HydraLink, but have thought of it several times. Your first paragraph reminds me of many of the areas I have mowed with my flail mower. Regarding the European flail mowers: I do agree that in Europe you are much more likely to find flail mowers than in the United States. I really don't know the reason why except that perhaps it is just a preference in Europe more so than in the United States. My Befco flail mower is manufactured in Rocky Mount North Carolina, but it does have a European connection. I believe the owner of Befco is from or has family in Italy. Whatever the case, I think the flail mower is a great type of mower, and would be the one I would own if I could only own one mower.

      Befco flail mowers can fit on subcompact tractors and larger. Your main limitation is the PTO HP. Befco flail mowers can fit on tractors with as low as 15 PTO HP so I would think it would fit on your tractor but check the specs. I am not totally familiar with the Kubota line, but the past line of Kubota subcompacts have specs that fit the flail mower, at least in the 48" configuration. From what I can see on a quick internet search, the Kubota L304 is certainly larger than the minimum figures. You may wish to consider a 60-72" model if it fits your tractor better.
