How cruddy! Almost same experience with 20 yrs married. Close to 10 years divorced now, and I made many mistakes father mentioned, but also kept to the Sacraments and praying the rosary. Was difficult to let myself feel all the hurt and cry. May we recognized what it is God wishes to work in our lives, what we need to forgive to heal and may God have mercy on us all! Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!
I had a similar experience after a 33 year marriage and I am almost 5 years out. So painful. My worst time is at night when I go to sleep. I can't seem to control my thoughts at all. I pray for my husband but I still have anger. But the whole trial did bring me to my conversion. Thanks be to God.

Sometimes trauma is not just in the mind but in the body/nervous system. We have to also release the pain from our body which is through feeling emotions. We mustn’t not act from emotions but allow them to cleanse our heart and soul. Tears are gifts from the Holy Spirit.
Amen. PTSD treatments like enacting the dive response are crucial.
Dealing with scrupulosity a lot since returning to the Faith. I have really been working hard when I have an unwanted thought to just trust in Jesus and give it to him. It's very difficult. But with grace, I'll get through it.
This is such powerful stuff! The part about not being able to forgive oneself for a grievous sin actually being a sin against God really hit me hard. Whoa! Thank you so much, Father Ripperger!

Thank God that we are not all constitutionally capable of every sin as you say. God has an outcome for each of us; a good outcome; un buen sucesso -- if we continue in His grace. Feb.2
I don't mean this to slam the church. I grew up Catholic, went through a born-again phase in college, then went places I shouldn't have, then came back to the church (or tried). One of the things the fundamentalists do well is go to scripture for solutions, and it seems like Fr Ripperger doesn't do that here. For instance, two things I would add so far 1. Matt. 5:44 Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. And there's a reason for that. Nothing helps us forgive more than praying for the person. Try this, say the Lord's Prayer--with emphasis on "as we forgive those" and then after the prayer, go through your memory and forgive everyone you can think of who has hurt you. Keep this verse in mind: Matt. 18:21-35 (and this is a big one). We've been forgiven, even more than that, we've been atoned for by God himself through his own suffering. If we can't forgive those who have hurt us, guess what? Father Ripperger's video on depression is fantastic. He's clearly been trained in psychology, and I have no doubt his sermon here can help too. But there's more going on. Example: My Mother passed away early this year. There were dropped balls medically. I had and am having a HARD TIME forgiving those people--to the point of being tempted to physical violence. I told the whole story to a friend who is a doctor and an atheist. He figured things out before I told him the details, explained what happened to me step by step, and the last thing he did was to urge me to forgive those who made mistakes medically. He pointed out that they were trying, were ill-equipped to help someone in my Mother's condition, and in one case, just didn't address the situation the way he would have (and did in the phone call). Pretty remarkable to hear an atheist tell me about forgiveness and how it is the best thing I could do for myself. And you know what? He was right. I pray for those people every time I say a Rosary for Mom. Fr was right about one thing though...everything starts with the truth. Without that, it isn't just an individual that is harmed. Ever see the movie Stalag 17? I also agree with not dwelling on a thing. Best thing to do is just get away from it and put it behind you (if you can). Father Scheier mentions something helpful as well in his videos. He was asked a question, what do I do if a priest gives me bad advice? And he says, well...go find another priest. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, essentially.

If wounds disorder our faculties, then virtue is the thing that reorders them.

So helpful! Since I help people with this, I want to make sure I'm doing it God's way, and not just to "feel" better.
According to certain studies, grieving for the loss of a loved one and for other emotional shocks takes 2 years. It's like a cold, we just have to wait it out. I wish all priests would take a course on how to deal with those who are grieving so they wouldn't make things worse by being cold-hearted or get in the way by becoming the crying towel of choice.

Stop sinning, because every time you sin, you also wound yourself-not just spiritually, but psychologically. Every time we sin, we mess up our psychological faculties.
Sometimes God allows a person to be wounded because He wants that person to excel in virtue.

If He forgives us, why will He bring it up again in the final judgment? The thought of that gives me a panic attack and rewounds.
I will recommend some modern tools.. Anthony de Mello tools for coming back in reality. Those exercises are actually from Ignatius Loyola.
This talk should be heard by Catholics the world over. It is SO helpful towards our spiritual life. Instead we are bombarded with sermons on climate change and lurrrv.
I wish father rippinger would do a talk on theophostic prayer ministry. It seems to be sweeping the church And almost no one is talking about it. Even though the founder is a Baptist. And he Braggs that Catholics are embracing it more than protestants. There is a whole lot of heresy involved, and yet priests are referring people to this form of pseudo counseling.
How do we carry other peoples' wounds? Should we pray for this grace?
If I let loose of it he'll just keep hurting me.
What if you have had multiple concurrent and consecutive major wounds?
Healing wounds - Psychological (natural level) and spiritual healing
Psychological:
- Healing the faculties involved in the wound.
The principal way of correcting our faculties is by consideration of the Truth.
Not just of the wounds, but of forgiveness. The truth of a particular situation in the intellect will begin to correct the will.
It requires a healing or purification of the memory - we have to stop thinking about the thing that wounded us. Every time that we recall it, we habituate our memory to recalling and perpetuating the wound.
Trains us not to associate the wound to ourselves or whoever injured us.
Custody of the mind - virtue - keep anything that may cause psychological or spiritual harm out of our imagination. The best way is to redirect it to our Lord and Our lady. It is a matter of repeated action (virtue), habituating your faculties to the good = virtue.
Custody of the senses - get your senses out of the things that are a problem for you (occasion of sin for example).
Example: quit listening to the rot of the Church because all it does is drag you down spiritually.
Correct our judgments and habits of thinking - looking at things rationally and not emotionally - someone might've hurt us, but...
Forgiveness (psychologically and spiritually) - correct our habits of thinking - intellect is like any other faculty, meaning it can be habituated to the good or not
What is mental illness? when we have habituated our intellects to unhealthy patterns of thinking
Faith is the first purification of the intellect. It is the first illumination at the supernatural level and helps in how we understand certain things on a spiritual level.
Meditating on God's forgiveness. And that save for His grace we'd be just as terrible of a sinner as others.
Meditating on God's forgiveness so that we can forgive other people (those who hurt us, our enemies)
Wounds make us narcissistic (brings our focus to ourselves) instead of focusing on God.
We are not that important. God is Who is important.
Forgiveness (spiritual) - healing part 2
When people hurt us, the wound is like the sticking in of a knife. If we continue to hold onto the knife, it continues to hurt us.
We have to let loose of these things. To keep holding onto them is to continue to hurt ourselves.
That doesn't mean you don't make reparations to God.
Not forgiving, not letting go is going to keep us wounded and aggravate over time.
It can destroy us spiritually and/or psychologically if we don't let it go.
Final judgment - in the end each of us will have to account for every infraction of the law before all of creation (God, angels, and humans).
Leave the judgment to God, and pray for those who've hurt you. You should not wish hell on anyone (love your enemies, and those who persecute you - Mt. 5:43-48)
Stop sinning - every time you sin, you mess up your psychology and your faculties. STOP IT.
Seek counsel from a few good people - not to seek pleasure from
Crying - every time we perform an action in congruity with our disposition, we get a certain kind of pleasure. Can help in releasing the knife.
Develop virtue - virtue reorders our faculties (see Fr's list of all the moral and theological virtues).
Sometimes God allows a person to be wounded because He wants us to excel in virtue (e.g. patience, forgiveness, charity). Our woundedness is an ability to grow in virtue.
Prayer: Jesus make my heart like unto thine.
Confession - carrying other people's woundedness. Priests are called in this way, but so are all Christians.
This is part of the life of followers of Jesus Christ striving for sanctity. Once they've healed their own wounds, to help others carry theirs.
Victim soul - carrying the wounds of other people, perfects us.
Obsession vs. custody of the mind. Good idea, but I've never seen it work for Trump Derangement Syndrome. It certainly hasn't worked for Dr. Allen Francis, coordinator of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM-IV).
As someone who loves a good conspiracy theory, I think the entire American political scene is just a scripted show. Nothing that Trump says or does really matters. He's just there to keep people distracted. I think his supporters love him mostly because their enemies hate him and secondly because of what they hope and imagine he represents. Politics today is like a form of porn people expect to turn into a marriage any minute now.
Father, how do I forgive my mother, when she doesn't recognize what she has done in my childhood and continues in my marriage and children...

Forgive her, and enjoy her while she's still alive. Once you don't have your mother in this earth, is the most painful heartbreaking loss you could ever feel.
Wasn't Jesus so wounded? Or did he only experience the effects of our wounds?
His wounds were the payment for the sins of the world; all our sins.

herewegokids7 we still suffer the wounds of our own sins until we confess and repent. We can’t pay the fine- we are not without sin. Lots of ailments come from sin- they open the door to attack, etc

I see what you mean now. Jesus was without sin so that would make him without wound by that method of delivery and so took on our sin debt and bore our punishment.
Do u forgive a serial offender or an abuser?
Yes. AND there’s no sin in cutting them off with charity. Jesus told us to shake the dust from our sandals and move on. We must forgive but need not continue to put ourselves in harms way. Some saints’ lives display the opposite of this, but that is perhaps a grace they were given.
