DCC Sound Fitting G Gauge Thomas & Tips to Improve Running

- A guide to installing DCC sound in the Bachmann large scale/G scale Thomas the Tank Engine.
One of the easier DCC conversions I've done because there's so much space inside Thomas. I used a Soundtraxx Econami Eco-200 steam sound decoder and a 8 ohm 2W speaker from www.roads-and-rails.co.uk. Given the amount of space in the model I think I could have gone with a bigger speaker.
I found that Thomas with Annie and Clarabel derailed a lot over LGB points or when going through 1st radius S curves, so I've also got a couple of tips that will help improve running.

Thanks for the tip on removing the face when reassembling!
Just be careful with the clips, easily broken, speaking from experience 😩
A general thumb up for your Videos:
You are one of the few UA-camrs who understood that the music and sound effects should not be louder than the speech and explanations.
I don't understand why the bad habit of much too loud music compared to much more important speech is so widespread...
You show very nicely that it can be done differently (better).
Thanks 👍 getting the audio right can be difficult, appreciate your comment 🙂
someones going to have pointed it out already, you've got clarabel facing the wrong way.
love the work, really want to get something like this done too
Oh what? Is there a right way round? I just assumed they looked forward 🤷🏼♂️
@@LittleWicketRailway its a common mistake, but a detail you'd kick yourself when you notice it
@@james12roe Oh c'mon James, don't keep us in suspense.
Is her name really lebaralC? Is that it? o.O
Thankyou for your video, To improve Thomas, Emily & Clarbel moving on LGB R1 radius track fit Emily couplers all, Thomas, Annie & Clarbel. I have an early Large scale / Garden Thomas, Annie & Clarbel set that had original tr
I WAS LITTRALY ABOUT TO SEARCH THIS 😂😂
Good timing. Hope it's what you needed.
Caps and diodes on the motor are for electronic noise suppression from the noisy brushes. We used to add these to brushed motors on electric powered R/C airplanes way back in the day.
They don't seem to interfere with the output from the devoder or the bemf, so they can stay.
Wow I could stick one of my N scale locos in there! Nice easy install when you’re not having to worry about space. 😊
Yeah, so much easier with a bit of room.
Very nice, Bachmann do make a sound module specifically for Thomas.
I know it exists, but I couldn't find it anywhere sadly. Hopefully they'll re-release in the UK soon. Let me know if you know where I can get one. Have a great weekend.
I quite like the default sound, a real loco sound to Thomas just sounds really nice. I think you should experiment with using 3 link couplings to also solve the derailment issues as theyve got to coupling hooks for it and i dont imagine you'd couple Thomas to anything other than his coaches.
Could try 3 links. Apparently Clarabel needs to be turned around, so I need to swap the coupling anyway.
@@LittleWicketRailway to be fair you can run Clarabel whatever way you want as her model uses the same one as Annie, when in reality she's meant to have a guards compartment on the end where her face is
Hi Rob, love your vids although G Gauge is a bit large for my place :)
But this one including tips for improved running has prompted me to ask - have you ever tried "upgrading" an old OO-Gauge motor by swapping its end magnets with neodymium versions?
I think that might be a cool topic for a video - especially since there's absolutely nothing about it on UA-cam.
I'm about to give it a go myself..
Thanks. I've never tried that, let me know how you get on and what difference it made.
7:27 If you realize that Clarabel is facing the wrong direction, right?
Haha, well spotted! A few people got in touch to tell me and she has now been turned around. I didn't even realise there was a way that they were always coupled up.
@@LittleWicketRailway I see.
Your Clarabel is backwards!
Haha, thanks. I never knew she always faced backwards. I will get her swapped round.
@@LittleWicketRailway Awesome! Now you'll see a smiling face from every viewpoint whether they're coming towards you or heading away which is rather endearing.
Seeing as you've got that DCC chip in it now, why not go the extra step and light up those lamps, maybe even a seuthe smoke generator? ;)
Keep up the good work!
