      @@JSHorsemanship Thank you! He is the sweetest, I have a question however. He doesn't like having his mane brushed, he doesn't mind about the detangling spray but as soon as I lift up the brush he holds his head high so I can't brush it. Any tips? Thank you!

      Hi Libby,
      Great question. I would work with him using a method called approach and retreat. I would start with having him drop his head and just petting his mane. If he has trouble dropping his head, work on that before introducing the brush. Next have him lower his head and allow you to pet his main wile holding the brush. Every time he keeps his head down and is relaxed, take the brush away. Once he is doing well with this step you can start to brush the main. Every time he relaxes, even for a moment
      Take the brush away. Eventually he should keep his head down and relaxed as you brush his main:)

      @@JSHorsemanship Thank you I'll definitely try this! I think he may have previously had sweet itch when he was with his past owner a while back which has led him to be uncomfortable with his mane being brushed, he is fine with his tail and forlock but not his mane. He hasn't rubbed it though and there doesn't appear to be any irritation now, I'll try your technique on him asap, thanks for the help!

I also just go out during the day to pet him and love on him. Patience is a big part and making things clear so he will understand what I am asking him to do. As always a great video. but I cannot believe I missed it and have since collected several horses(not at the same time obviously) and it has always been pretty good. Yeah other horses always block the gate and then nicker when they get left behind (I do apologise though) but so far always been positive. I think the points you raised about the horses body language has to be in the forefront of your mind and also how you are carrying yourself in their eyes and probably why it has been positive. But thank you as always, You are my favourite subscription and always on the look out for your weekly videos and perhaps ones that i have missed.

    Awesome video! What kind of horse is Dory? I have never owned a horse but recently, my father-in-law got one from a local sale barn and gave her to me as a gift. She is pretty short legged and stands about as high as Dory looks but may even be shorter. She is also painted. We don’t have any information about her at all from the sale barn. I hadn’t planned on riding her at all. Just bonding with her and spending lots of time doing groundwork and just as a sweet friend to me.

    I’m here because I live in a farm and have owned horses my whole life, ridden them a few times and all but never really been into them. Horses have always been my sisters thing but she doesn’t do anything with them anymore as she has no time, she’s at work constantly. However, there’s 2 unbroken horses and 1 of them I can see a connection between me and her. She tries kicking me whenever I walk upto her 😂 but that won’t stop me trying. She is halter broken but not very well. I want to be able to build a bond with her and get closer to her and maybe just sit with her in the field a bit until she lets me close enough to her so I feel comfortable trying a halter. I haven’t told any of my family I want to do this yet 😅 but I feel me and this horse have a lot in common, she reminds me of myself so I reckon if I play my cards right I can get her to trust me and perhaps learn ground work with her and learn to break her in aswel. (Ik you’re supposed to do ground work first as I’ve been surrounded by horsey people all my life) so I can’t wait to get started and hopefully one day manage to atleast get a halter on her without her tryna boot me (my sister can get a halter on her easy) wish me luck 😂

      Hi 😊
      That is a great question. There are a few things that I do to help a horse that is anxious when tacking up. One thing I do is work on teaching my horse a cue to stand and relax on cue in the arena. Once this is good , I start to transfer this cue to the brush stall. I‘ll definitely add this to my list of videos to do👍🐴

      @JSHorsemanship 4 роки тому +1

      Hi this is a great question 😊
      Here are a few things to consider.
      1.If you are new to horses
      bring a trainer you trust or someone with horse experience with you. They can give valuable insight into getting the right horse.
      2. Always have the person who is showing the horse ride before you get on.
      Doing this will help you evaluate if you like how the horse responds.
      3. Don’t get on the horse if the person who is showing is not willing to ride before you.
      4. Get a pre-purchase exam from a vet you trust who knows the goals you have for your future Horse.

    Totally agree! I don’t always ride, sometimes Denali and I have spa days. I bring him onto the barn, brush him, clean his legs and feet, comb and treat his mane and tail, and then we have a long massage. He especially likes his butt rubbed and will move his tail aside for me, then we take a walk, visit the other horses and chew on some grass. When I put him back into his paddock, he gets snacks and lots of kisses. It’s a perfect day. ❤

    Do you have any general tips for actors who are asked to film scenes on horseback? I work with film crews and this is starting to come up more often. I know the crew tries to find actors who already have experience, but there’s a wide range of comfortability and experience when it comes to riding. Any tips for working well with a horse when timelines are usually short and props/costumes are involved?

    • @JSHorsemanship
      @JSHorsemanship 3 роки тому +1

      Hi, hiring and working with an equestrian professional will help you progress the quickest. Other important factors are: how much time you are dedicating to riding a week (3 days a week is a good place to start), and the type of horse you are riding. If you can find this out in advance maybe you could take some lessons on a horse that is similar. For brand new horse riders here is a video I did on the basics ua-cam.com/video/fV7kuUrjutY/v-deo.html

    Hi- what is your best advice for an inexperienced rider - with experienced well broken horses - I have been watching Rick Gore's channel- "Think Like a Horse". I understand pressure and release- ground work- for bonding- brushing-walking etc. In terms of reward conditioning with treats how do you apply those techniques ? Should I start them off with some treats every time I see them so they know I am a good guy ?

    • @JSHorsemanship
      @JSHorsemanship 3 роки тому +1

      Hi😀
      I think using treats as a positive reinforcer can be very beneficial with certain horses in work.
      It is important when you’re giving treats to have some guidelines and make sure your horse is respectful and safe. Food is a strong motivator but it can also become a safety concern if not given correctly. Before giving your horse a lot of treats I have found it to be a good idea to look into understanding positive reinforcement.

    5 seconds in u can see the change look at her eyes
    if there are horses in the barn my leaee always is watching me ear and eye on me
    now i think she was abused befor i got the chance to ride she reared alot for this girl and that ment 5 hours in hobbles even my lease owner has sent me hobbles i have never used them as she doesn't rear for me never has
