    I expect on the next tower, the BQD will be part of the tower and not the OLM, and retract well out of the way prior to launch, otherwise repairs after each launch will slow down the expected reusability rate. One thing about SpaceX, they learn and improve everything with each launch. Great video NSF.

    • @Vatsyayana87
      @Vatsyayana87 2 місяці тому

      Personally i think it will be a similar setup. I really dont think during normal operations they will be doing the pad avoidance maneuver which is why the BQD gets blasted like that.
      Thats not a normal thing for launches and is done because they arent confident enough that the rocket wont turn off and fall straight down onto the pad right after launch.
      I think it might be time on flight 4 for them to start going straight up and spare that QD for such punishment now that they have shown they can get all engines working properly. If not on flight 4 then i expect it soon.

    • @jamesrosar3823
      @jamesrosar3823 2 місяці тому

      They are replacing the BQD hoses again because they have to make them flex fast when they are super cold. Super cold and flexible materials don’t exist. They would need to make a series of right angle parallelogram joints in rigid tubing to have a chance of re-usability, and even that would be an expensive long-shot, but better than this.

    • @Vatsyayana87
      @Vatsyayana87 2 місяці тому +4

      Yeah they have been doing a pad clearance maneuver on take off for all three launches since they dont trust it not to fall straight back onto the pad yet. This makes it blast that side of the OLM directly. So its been damage from all three launches building up there.
      With two perfect lights of all 33 and engines running full duration on the second and third flights, i think it might be time to start going straight up and sparing the poor OLM and BQD..

    • @knowledgeisgood9645
      @knowledgeisgood9645 2 місяці тому +3

      @@Vatsyayana87 I am not sure they don't have to do that every time for other reasons. They might blast the BQD a bit less if they are vertical, but not by much. The plume widens a lot on take off so the BQD would still be roasted. It needs better insulation and maybe a bit of LN2 sprayed inside and maybe water on top. It becomes an oven (from ~ -200°C), which does the hoses no favors. The sound vibrations must rattle just about everything inside it too.

    • @Vatsyayana87
      @Vatsyayana87 2 місяці тому

      Can you think of another reason to do it? I cant really. Its inefficient and damaging to lean over immediately after liftoff. Would be kind of foolish to design a system like that.
      Also the plume doesnt widen a a lot, Its pretty much the same width as the rocket all the way through the plume, sure a meter or two of soft stuff on either side but the energetic high velocity stuff is very well maintained even when its higher and twice as long as the rocket.
      Yeah the vibration is pretty extreme on its own for sure but nothing compares to a direct blast of the booster pointing straight at it right after lift off. Flight 1 showed whats that is like pretty comprehensively.@@knowledgeisgood9645

    I hope they are going to design the new launch tower where it is more resistant to damage from the launches. Seems like it needs to be farther away from the launch mount, but that would create some different problems. They are smart people and will figure it out.

    • @michaeldeierhoi4096
      @michaeldeierhoi4096 2 місяці тому

      The launch tower won't be farther away because the chop sticks need to be able to reach the OLM when transferring vehicles to and from it.
      In fact in a new iteration of the chop sticks planned for the 39 A pad the chop sticks were much shorter. Whether that design is used here remains to be seen. Personally the idea of the booster being caught closer to the tower seems . . . .dangerous! Either way we won't know for a while.

      About 4 are built, in different stages of finished of course.
      The time changes quite a lot due to so many things from upgrades to back logs to work being done on the site and such to give a real time frame. Once the factory is running and they decide on how they want it be done it will be a little more predictable.
      But i feel like it only took about a month to make one of the early ships when they were doing high alt test flights.
      Things are always changing everywhere here but you can say this, much faster then any other rocket that comes anywhere close to the lift class or even a class or two below.

      Well they angle away from the tower exactly for that reason lol.
      They do not want to spend another year or two replacing it because they trusted the vehicle during the first few flights.
      Since both flight 2 and 3 were the first and second time they have ever gotten all 33 engines to light and stay lit, i think it is time to start going straight up as it should be and spare the OLM/QD..
      Fingers crossed flight 4 is that time.

  • @not2busy
    @not2busy 2 місяці тому +2

    In my opinion, the OLM is still too fragile for the task of repeatedly launching rockets. Nothing should be exposed to, or damaged by the exhaust by this point. What happens when they upgrade to the V3 Raptors? This should have been built like a bunker, strong enough to withstand the enormous heat and pressure. During WW2, the Germans built these ultra-strong cylindrical air-defence bunkers that are virtually impossible to tear apart even to this day. Perhaps SpaceX should consider that approach. And I still think a flame-trench is needed.

    • @Vatsyayana87
      @Vatsyayana87 2 місяці тому

      Well let me put your opinion at ease. For these first flights they do a pad avoidance maneuver which makes the blast hit that area directly during launch.
      The fact that the QD survives with just minor damage is pretty incredible and once they feel confident enough to not do this maneuver anymore it will suddenly take 95-98% less damage. Guessing obviously but the vast majority without question.
      I think flight 4 might be the first time they start launching straight up and this will no longer be an issue. (Since both the 2nd and 3rd launches were the 1st and 2nd times they have ever got all 33 engine running and they stayed healthy the whole way.)
      A side note, this thing vaporizes steel up to hundreds of pounds per launch (unprotected) and would make any WWII concrete both melt and explode with its sudden and massive heat differential, pressure and vibration. At least good swaths of it per launch anyway. So i dont know, thats a test i would like to see lol

    • @Vatsyayana87
      @Vatsyayana87 2 місяці тому +3

      Also, the water flame diverter has worked like magic. It has without a doubt proven its good enough for the job. A traditional diverter wouldnt change anything on the OLM at all.

    • @not2busy
      @not2busy 2 місяці тому

      I'm just surprised that any maintenance is required at this stage. The heat and pressure will only get stronger as they go to V3 Raptors and beyond. As the same OLM is also meant to capture the vehicles, I have a concern that damage incurred during launch will potentially impact that function. As for the concrete, newer formulae were developed, primarily for defensive purposes against bunker-buster munitions. They are stronger and designed to withstand a great deal more than ordinary concrete. If used to construct a similar WW2 bunker (Flak Tower) as mentioned before, I imagine it could do the job required. Yes, the deluge system is working nicely. It's just the shock all around the pad that I would prefer to be a bit more controlled than what was shown on the video feeds.

      They are building one at Massey's for static firing the ships. Let's see how that makes it first.
      Elon always likes to start at what is minimum, then add complexity if they must - not the other way around. It saves money and any additions would be needed, and not overkill. His rockets are cheaper.

    • @not2busy
      @not2busy 2 місяці тому +1

      I understand the build-quick principle for developing cars, rockets and robots, but once a stationary function is identified, it should be designed to accomodate whatever is needed down the road and all the time. Like a port harbour or an airport. You can't go repairing a dock every time a ship leaves port or a runway every time a plane takes off. As there are, and will be, so few OLMs available, they absolutely must be there, ready for use, again and again. Otherwise the re-usability is not that much better than the Space Shuttle. Just that instead of the extensive work replacing the tiles on the vehicle, you are instead fixing the ground equipment. Just moving the work time over to another area. @@knowledgeisgood9645

    Why gimbal the rocket so hard at lift-off? Saturn 5 did gimbal away from the tower but Starship should liftoff straight up, it clears the tower faster than Saturn 5 anyway… no problemo.

      The TPS has not been properly tested to determine what and how to improve it. The Space X MO is to upgrade a piece of technology when it is understood why it is inadequate. So because the failed attitude control of S 28 caused it to roll too much the TPS was not properly tested.
      The tile watchers need to relax and let process at Space X do what it does when it's ready.
