I’m so excited for this playthrough! Some advice, something about Dark Souls is that you need to play it more…tactically, I would say. A lot of areas are littered with enemies that require you to play more strategically. So I would say take it a bit more slowly, especially when it comes to exploring other areas. I’ve seen a lot of people rush through areas because they get so overwhelmed by the amount of enemies and are afraid of dying and they miss A LOT. Also, don’t be afraid to use your shield, they are a lot more useful in the dark souls trilogy. Can’t wait for the rest! Good luck!
So many bonfires run past: ah, the Blind Playthrough. In addition to the others mentioned, there is one under the dragon bridge near Solaire. When running like mad down the stairs on the side to avoid the dragonflame, there is a kickable ladder before fighting the undead soldiers and rats down there. Seeing such paths and where they lead will change the entire way Dark Souls is seen and experienced. There's a moment coming up, and it's a good one. And I mean it's good for you, Jah, not for content or pu Islington viewership.
"Are there i-frames?" Yes. Are they numerous? No. The importance of dodge mechanics has been gradually on the rise in From's games over time. Dodging is something of an emergency move in DS1: it's stamina-expensive and short on I-frames, but will let you evade (both via I-frames and movement) attacks that would have slammed through your shield and most of your health bar. Shields are *almost* mandatory, though, for most players, and movement in general is relatively slow and lumbering. The other thing to know about defense is that in DS1 poise is newly-introduced and particularly strong-- and IIRC there is no hyperarmor. You can make a low-poise build work for PvE; most boss attacks, especially, will stagger you anyway. Against a player though it's near-certain death by stunlock. Dark Souls is about a month older than Skyrim. It is not, quite, where it all began; that would be an experimental From side-project: Demon's Souls. (And before that King's Field.) Dark Souls was where it went triple-A for the first time. Re: the furtive pygmy - "Is that me?" Not literally, but good instincts! "Just gotta get my Strength up." Equip load is an Endurance-derived stat. It is a good one to level (governs both equip load and stamina), just not as important as Vitality. Equip load roll-type breaks are at 25%, 50%, and 100%. With two equip-boosting rings and End at 40, you can fast-roll in medium armor-- agility plus poise-- which helps a pile. "I'm still heavy-rolling!" That's a medium roll. It's typically what you're aiming for with medium armor and a shield. "How tied together are the three Dark Souls games?" 1 and 3, very. 2 is ... odd, that way-- it contains few references to 1 and you can easily complete the whole thing without really understanding how they relate. Chronologically within the setting it's between 1 and 3, but it almost seems to happen in a different universe. (3 does a good job drawing it all together, though.) It's not a bad game. It's just not ... as good. For most purposes. Some PvPers, in particular, swear by it, though. DS1 enemies tend to choose their attacks based on your placement when they finish their previous animation and have a smaller repertoire than you're used to. The Asylum Demon was ground-slamming repeatedly because you were more or less hugging his midriff; it's his "Get away from me!" move. "Laugh away, I guess." Most NPCs in Lordran are on the verge of cracking and going hollow. You'll be hearing a lot of that humorless laugh. "I'm scared." Aww, Hellkite's just a big sweetie, really. (He's not a boss, and technically optional, but killing him can be maddening.) "Did I forget to change my voice?" Don't think voice options were a thing in this one. "One bite is poison?" You're wearing nearly zero protective gear. "So there's no stealth in this game," there is, but it's minimal relative to other mechanics. Sound and line of sight both count, and coming in physical contact with them is a guaranteed aggro. "It's not letting me--!" I mean, what did you think the spear/shield guys did?
If you have played sekiro and elden ring, you absolutely OWE it to yourself to play ds 1,2 and 3. Absolutely have to, to truly appreciate those two games
To answer a few questions interspersed through the video: You weren't heavy rolling when you removed the chest armor, you were actually medium rolling. Dark Souls originally divided rolling speed into three categories, light, medium, and heavy. It's been a while since i've had to remember this, but I believe the threshold for light rolling is staying below 30 or 35% of your max carry weight, while medium is above that and below 70%, and heavy being above that. You can get away with medium rolling in most circumstances, or even heavy rolling if you just get a bunch of upgraded heavy armor and a good shield with high stamina. This is one of the few Fromsoft games where facetanking (almost) everything is potentially viable with the right setup. Fog walls are a bit weird compared to later installments in the series. In this game, they seem to function more as dividers of different loading zones, as well as separating boss rooms. Incidentally, you'll also find that these dividers occasionally reappear in the same spots during online play, so their placement may have something to do with how they wanted to limit areas with co-op/invasions, but i'm not 100% sure on that. And lastly, Dark Souls 2 is absolutely the black sheep of the Dark Souls trilogy for many people, partially because Miyazaki was not the director for the project, but also because there are some elements in it that take a bit of a different direction from the other installments in terms of both gameplay and aesthetics. I don't personally think it's a bad thing, I personally enjoy all three games. It also probably wasn't recommended much because it's admittedly an odd spot to start. It's not the proper beginning of the trilogy, and it lacks some of the direct similarities to Elden Ring that 3 has, so there's no real reason to start with it if you're coming from Fromsoft's later games. The three aren't heavily connected in terms of direct narrative, but they do share overarching themes. It isn't strictly necessary to play them in order, but you will probably get more out of the later installments if you start with the first, at least in my opinion.
@@GhastlyEcho the only thing that was patched regarding roll thresholds was the dark wood grain ring needing you to be below 25% instead of 50% to be able to ninja flip.

Yes bro! Welcome to one of the greatest games of all time. Well done on going straight to Undead Burg (as the game intended). Otherwise you would have been in for quite the baptism. You did miss a super important shortcut though that would have made life a lot easier. Also at 37:33 you had 3 directions to choose from and I'm afraid you made very much the wrong one. The level design and interconnectivity in this particular game is off the charts; can't wait for you to discover it all
jah my boi. we had the exact same journey: bloodborne, elden, sekiro and then came to souls 1 and honestly the beginning areas of this game were the most infuriating experience out of all the aforementioned games but dont let it get you down. i myself had to restart and come back to it 3 times before finishing. just gotta chug through the molasses movement & unforgiving runbacks until you develop the muscle for how different this one plays
Bloodborne has i-frames but if youre locked on you do the dash thing. If youre unlocked you roll with the i-frames the same as dark souls & elden ring.
In the older DS games, the levels themselves are usually the bigger threat than the bosses. Especially since you are coming from Elden Ring and Sekiro.
also yeah the first dark souls 1 true blind playthrough can be very painful indeed. the bosses may not be the biggest obstacle but the world certainly can be, especially for a first time player
Welcome to the classic start to the Souls trilogy. It's very janky but it's also filled with soul and made with love, care and thought from Miyazaki and all involved. Technically though, the start of the accessible Soulsborne games would be Demon's Souls, released in 2009.
Dark souls 2 plays in a distant future where most of the stuff from ds1 is already forgotten. Dark souls 3 plays in the near future and it has references to ds1. Ds2 is definitely worth playing is just a little bit more frustrating and long but i enjoyed it a lot.
Dark souls! Let's go! Jah, listen to me bro, get the wooden ring as soon as you're able I think it might even be called the dark wooden ring it's the ring that lets you backflip it's basically a Dodge roll with extra eye frames! All you have to do is have a light build to use it! I promise you and it will help you so much against every single boss double check on the name of the ring that lets you do backflips and where you can get it and when! I just can't think of it off the top of my head right now LOL
I'm surprised nobody mentioned. U said u were going back to the beginning. Better go back one more. Demon's Souls is the first. Lookin forward to this playthrough. Don't rush soo much.
DS2 is a great game, it just does things a bit differently than DS1 or DS3 does. DS3 is in many ways a reversion to DS1 both mechanically and in terms of story, though it keeps enough innovations to make it its own thing. I quite enjoyed DS2 - the game is fun, beautiful and immersive. I did find a lot of the base-game boss fights to be disappointing, but the DLC bosses largely make up for this.
Remember how people told you to pump vigor in elden ring? This game has it's key stat too. 40+ endurance baby. You can fast roll in some of the fattest armors with proper setup. Other than that, boss fights aren't comparable to sekiro or ER in terms of mechanical difficulty, but they tend to have more puzzle to them. Also, skipping past everything ER style... won't work as well. Be slow and methodical.
Dark souls 2 wasn't developed by Miyazaki himself, rather by other team, and yes DS 2 has some dubious game design choices, but i still recomment you to play it
2 is different but very good nonetheless. Just need to change your approach against enemy, like don't rush, observe, bait, and fight with mindset to finish in one run, rather than anticipating death.
1. DON'T USE THE DIVINE BLESSINGS. You should have picked the master key bit since you got them you should save them as they are extremely limited in the game. 2. Dark Souls 2 is great game PLAY IT!!! People that don't like DS2 are just haters that expected it to be a clone of DS and it isn't. The director was a different guy, although Miyazaki held a supervisory position. 3. There are 3 different rolling speeds in DSR. Most builds will put you in a medium roll depending on armor. 4. ENJOY AND 🍻 CHEERS

Easily the worst of the 3 but yeah still not a terrible game. I still enjoyed playing it
Dark Souls 2 was my first souls game . I loved it. As long as you can recognize that it is older like DS1, It’s definitely worth playing.
Cool video super fun to watch^^
What a hard game for first timers !
New subscriber bro
Damn, bro is on the same path as me (almost) I started with bloodborne, then elden ring, sekiro, and dark souls I after that. Can’t wait to see this!
If you're going to equip your sheild, use it. Having it on your back only increases your encumbrance - it gives you no protection there.
I’m excited for this!
The level design and interconnectivity in this particular game is off the charts; can't wait for you to discover it all
I hope you'll get to play Demon's Souls soon!
life would have been so much easier if he found the bonfire under the dragon lol 😂
jah my boi. we had the exact same journey: bloodborne, elden, sekiro and then came to souls 1 and honestly the beginning areas of this game were the most infuriating experience out of all the aforementioned games but dont let it get you down. i myself had to restart and come back to it 3 times before finishing. just gotta chug through the molasses movement & unforgiving runbacks until you develop the muscle for how different this one plays
should we tell him to get the zweihander in the cemetery in firelink? God the zweihander feels so good to use in DS1..
You missed a bonfire, don't rush try to look around you more
Dark Souls will teach you Patience, Strategy, and Rhythm.
Dark souls teaches you that it takes forever to level up
Yayyy finally at Dark Souls! ❤
You’ve got this bro! If you can defeated ER, BB and Sekiro then you’ve got the skills for this one 👌
Go son!
the baldur gate knights claim another victim!
Bloodborne has i-frames but if youre locked on you do the dash thing. If youre unlocked you roll with the i-frames the same as dark souls & elden ring.
Demon's Souls is even more brutal bro, source: trust me
Great video!
Probably my favorite game of all time.
Prepare to try.
In the older DS games, the levels themselves are usually the bigger threat than the bosses. Especially since you are coming from Elden Ring and Sekiro.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE YOU FINISHED ELDEN RING LETS GOOOOOO
also yeah the first dark souls 1 true blind playthrough can be very painful indeed. the bosses may not be the biggest obstacle but the world certainly can be, especially for a first time player
Great video sir, been a long time since I played, they gave us that many flasks at the start?
Bloodorne absolutely has i-frames, but you never learned to dodge towards the enemies to take advantage of them lol
Bro don’t feel bad, I was feeling the same way. I promise it gets way worse 😝
praise the sun!
Welcome to the classic start to the Souls trilogy. It's very janky but it's also filled with soul and made with love, care and thought from Miyazaki and all involved. Technically though, the start of the accessible Soulsborne games would be Demon's Souls, released in 2009.
Dis gon b good!!
Dark souls 1 will teach you despair you will learn what loss really means. Good luck
Ds2 is probably the worst souls game, but it’s still really good and I definitely recommend it. Ds3 is my favorite of the 3.
Dark souls 2 plays in a distant future where most of the stuff from ds1 is already forgotten.
Dark souls 3 plays in the near future and it has references to ds1.
Ds2 is definitely worth playing is just a little bit more frustrating and long but i enjoyed it a lot.
Yep, 2011. The remaster is more recent but didnt actually change much aside from technical stuff and lighting
Dark Souls 2 is proper goated
Dark souls 2 is probably my favourite in the DS series
🫤
You were not fat rolling after you removed the body armor. That was a mid roll. You got a fast roll by removing the helmet and arm protection.
Dark souls!
Did he miss all the black knights?
I'd advise you to remap the jump control. You are taking unnecessary damage by pressing the dodge when running. You can remap the dodge to left stick.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned. U said u were going back to the beginning. Better go back one more. Demon's Souls is the first. Lookin forward to this playthrough. Don't rush soo much.
LETS GOOOOOO!!!!!!
Began with demon's souls.
this is gonna be hillarious 😁can smell it
DS2 is a great game, it just does things a bit differently than DS1 or DS3 does.
DS2 gets an unfair amount of hate. It isn’t nearly as bad as the internet would make you think… Though, I’ll admit, DS3 is by far my fave of the trilogy. :)
