Outstanding portrait of a changing Greenwich Village through the eyes of two residents. Makes one wonder whether the forces of gentrification and commercialization have permanently altered this center of bohemian life and artistic innovation.

I was born at st Vincent’s hospital and was proud to be born there. I have lived in uk for more than half my life and was so sad when I learned it wasn’t there anymore. Today is my father’s birthday. He was born in 1895, in Chicago .He was the original FRED Leighton imports on mcdougal street , featured in another video. When he died in 1963, the now famous jeweler bought the name I believe as I was only 6. Growing up I went back there because it had cast iron pretty railings and it was a Capezio shop, which was nice. I liked the fact I could still find the place. Thank you for making this video, and telling this story which is very real and heartfelt 💜

I grew up in Greenwich Village through the 60s and 70s; I left the Village in 1991. I was lucky to have grown up there and I know it wouldn't be the same experience if I was young there now. The Village used to be a unique place (in the world) but now it's just a high-end, expensive neighborhood-- and others like it can be found all over the world.

So right...Resident for about 8 years. Super of 240 Sullivan for a few and 344 W 12th for a few more while being a practicing artist. 1978- 1986 The international village, a place of creative and thoughtful people of broad sensibilities, tolerant of much, compassionate to all. The essence of the place was individuality...and the perfection of that art. local cobbler, book sellers that could learn your line of study in about a two sentence chat....thereafter there'd be a small selection waiting for you the next Satuday you stopped in...Nothing better than Sunday brunch at an outside table reading the Times....Even then the tourist influx on weekends could be insane especially at springtime with all the out of towners letting loose without much restraint...But we had the cafes the rest of the week if desired and each was like a personal enclave....I loved it there, it grew me.

Gentrifications did the Village in. What a great place to live during the early 1970s! Washington Square Park looks about the same, but NYU has extended its real estate throughout the area and small shops have all but disappeared.

Wow 10 years ago. Look at it now in 2022. The charm, creative and bohemian vibe is all but gone. All those types of people that made the neighborhood special could not move here now. Who can afford to live in these neighborhoods now? Suits and rich people

To me the Village was New York. I could spend hours walking around - Whenever came from jersey to go out to L.I., Iwould get off the ferry and walk the whole way to Penn Station - that was over 60 yrs ago - Schade.

Sadly this is a mirror of the situation in London's Soho. Google it. A once artistic area of theatre and cabaret and iconic bars is now banks and offices.

I think the woman being interview sounded kind of homophobic, everyone who lived in the village knew that the West side Highway was the gay area where all the gays congregated and were the patrons of the bars and restaurants that catered to the area gay crowd, and also she said no one would dare walk to the "Meat Packing" because it was dangerous", Well, that was also were gays and lesbians gathered together back in the 1970's and 1980's until sadly AIDS hit and a whole generation of creative artists, organizers and politicians succumbed to the infection. Of course it wasn't long before the area gentrified and the big cronies moved in to start building luxury expensive condos only a certain group of people can afford now.

@ Chris Gutierrez: I know! I wanted to know what song/music is the soothing piano jazzy piece too, but I couldn't find it. I know on top here it says the name of the song is: "Thoughts of You" by jazz player Munro and it's true, at the beginning of this video you hear parts of that song, but the piano slow jazz in the middle and almost he end of this video is not in the same song! I think the editor/mixer used more than one song but they only revealed one title as part of the credits here.
