There's a constant sense of expectation-subversion - contrasting moods and then suddenly a completely unexpected shift in tempo. In fact, the musical ideas like the one between b.71-75 is exactly how I take it -- like a pompous aria reaching its climax!
This is one of the most eccentric performances that I have ever heard. That said, it's also one of the most riveting performances I've ever heard. I know this piece very well and I never sit through recordings of it. But this one made the music fresh and alive. I loved it.
